How one entrepreneur is empowering teen girls in the Denver-Metro area and beyond

The world sends a lot of negative messages to teenagers, and the consequences can be devastating. Laura Fook’s company, Light Speaks Loudest, is on a mission to prove that even in the midst of darkness, everyone can find the light. Laura operationalizes her mission through creating quarterly subscription boxes to help teenage girls love themselves, others, and God. “Light Speaks Loudest aspires to produce media and resources that reach teenage girls in a way that is true to the culture and authentic to their faith,” Laura explains. “We want to go beyond simple answers like ‘Guys will love you if you wear this thing,’ or, on the other end of the spectrum, ‘Don’t kiss someone until you’re married.’” As a part of her creative process, Laura ventures where few are willing to go—back to her teenage self. She thinks deeply about the resources she craved as a 13- to 17-year-old girl and works from there. In addition, she notes how culture, and therefore the teenage experience, has changed since she was that age. The rise of technology and social media requires fresh approaches to tackle age-old issues with depression, anxiety, body image, and perfectionism. Every box has a theme that addresses such issues. For example, in early 2022, Laura conducted an Instagram poll to determine some of the struggles teen girls in her audience faced. Loneliness was a forerunner, so she

created a box with the theme of friendship. Each item in the box aligned with one of Light Speaks Loudest’s primary pillars derived from Matthew 22:37–39: Love God, love yourself, and love others. Among other items, the friendship box included: • A mug brownie mix, necklace, and candle to help girls love themselves • A seed-paper card that, when planted, grew a flower to remind girls that friendships take a lot of intention and time, thus helping them love others • A guided journal about friendship (written by Laura herself) to help girls love God Every box includes a product from a teen entrepreneur. The friendship box included a DIY collage kit from Camden Speece of Kinaiya Creations. Camden was also given a leadership opportunity to conduct a virtual workshop about collage-making for the Light Speaks Loudest community. For the winter box, Aubrey Dooley of Bree’s Slime Shop created custom slimes, and it was her biggest order by far. “Quite often, our collaboration is the first time they’ve worked on a wholesale or bulk order this large,” Laura says. “It’s fun to support them, be a part of the education experience, and share a positive experience.” To learn more about Light Speaks Loudest or to order a subscription for a teenage girl in your life, head to lightspeaksloudest.com.

Montgomery was doing economic development, and Izzet was his translator. A few years later, Izzet moved to the United States, and CO Stoneyard was born. projects and beyond. In the last year alone, they’ve serviced over 200 kitchens. Montgomery chuckles when asked about his favorite projects, saying, “We’re pretty proud of all of them.” Driven by quality and satisfied customers, Montgomery tallied off story after story of the families Timberline has served. They have several repeat customers, including one family who returned for three different projects. Thanks to Timberline Restoration, they have their exact dream home, complete with eight bedrooms. Even if you’ve never seen a performance of The Nutcracker, you’ve probably heard of it—and you definitely know its music. Originally choreographed in 1892 by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov with a score by Tchaikovsky, it was adapted from E.T.A. Hoffmann’s 1816 short story “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King.” The Nutcracker is arguably the most popular ballet performance. In fact, major American ballet companies generate around 40% of their annual ticket revenues from performances of The Nutcracker. But you don’t have to travel to a major American ballet company (or pay the major ticket prices) to enjoy a performance. Since 2011, the Littleton Ballet Academy and the Littleton Youth Ballet Company have been presenting performances of the classic two-act ballet to great acclaim. Littleton Ballet Academy was founded in 2003 by Bobbie Jaramillo and her daughter Ali. Both professional dancers with impressive résumés, the mother-daughter duo wanted to share their love of ballet. “And then in 2007, we started doing performances,” says Ali. “I grew up with doing a lot of performances, and I think it’s really important. After all those lessons and classes, performing is like dessert.” Shortly after the academy started doing performances, Bobbie and Ali created a nonprofit youth ballet company for serious, upper-level students ages 7–18. “You have to be in level three or higher,” explains Ali, “and you have to come to an

audition. We’ve never rejected anyone, it’s just a formality. But it does show their interest. And then they’re accepted as part of this company.” With around 325 students enrolled in the academy and 86 dancers as part of the ballet company, both entities have a teamlike feel, something that Ali says tends to be missing in ballet. “They have uniforms and they have mentors; the mentors will teach the younger kids things like how to sew their pointe shoes.” Ali says they also try to make it as family-based as possible, “because we’re very aware that during Nutcracker season, we tend to see them more than their parents do.” Set in 1902 Littleton, Ali says the performance has stayed true to the traditional story. “What I love about our Nutcracker is that it’s got a great family feel to it. There’s no slapstick. There are no surprises. We don’t have a creepy Drosselmeyer. We try to make it as family-friendly as we can.” Production starts with selecting the right dancer for each role. “Choosing who will play Clara is the hardest thing because almost everyone wants to be Clara,” says Ali. “This year, we have six Claras. We were thinking we were going to have five; we knew it was between about eight kids. One of them surprised us at the audition by being just so charming and amazing. We were like, well, we have six shows. asking questions like ‘What do you think about this kid?’ ‘Is this the right year for them to be in this role?’ ‘Are they going to get really nervous?’ And if they’re not ready for this year, they may be chosen as an understudy and perform the role next year. We try to make sure that everyone in the advanced levels has something special to do that they’re going to be really excited about.” These 2022 performances are special for all the teachers and students, as it’s the first year since 2019 that things feel back to normal. Obviously, there were no performances in 2020, and in 2021 everyone performed in masks. “I just think the biggest thing is that all our kids love The Nutcracker. You know, sometimes when you’re watching people, you can tell they don’t love what they’re doing. But I feel like all our kids love it. Our parents seem to love it. Salt Dough Recipe

Step One

MAKES ABOUT 12 ORNAMENTS

Mix together flour and salt. Add ¼ cup water and paint (if you want a white dough, otherwise you may leave it out). Stir to mix. If needed, slowly add more water until you reach a pizza dough consistency. Finally, remove dough from the bowl and knead on a floured surface until all ingredients are fully incorporated. Add more flour if too sticky, add more water if too dry.

Salt dough, or dough art as we refer to it in our family, is a simple yet beautiful way to adorn spaces around the holidays. Making salt dough ornaments is a holiday tradition that we have been doing since I was a kid in the ‘80s, but the process has been around even longer than that! The use of salt dough is as old as dirt, or I guess I should say as old as clay. Even so, salt dough has made a comeback in recent years and for good reason—it only requires three ingredients, and the festive end product will last for years to come. We still pull out the salt dough ornaments I made as a kid and place them on our tree each year. I love that old traditions can live throughout the decades as we find ways to reinvent them with current-day trends. That is exactly what I did here with these lovely Snowflake Salt Dough Ornaments. I hope you follow along to make some yourself this holiday season.

Supplies Needed • Rolling Pin • Cookie Cutters (optional) • Plastic or Metal Straw • Cookie Sheet

Parchment Paper Lettered Stamps Acrylic Sealer Baker’s Twine

• ½ cup table salt • 4 oz white acrylic paint (optional)

To make ornaments, use a rolling pin to roll dough to ½—¼ inch thick.

Step Three Use a cookie cutter to create snowflake shapes. Use a straw to poke a hole at the top of each snowflake to allow a space to thread the twine after baking.

Step Four Place ornaments on parchment-lined baking sheets. Bake at 200 degrees F for 2 hours until dry. Flip ornaments every 30 minutes for a faster bake.

Step Five

Ingredients • 1 cup all-purpose white flour • ½ cup water (give or take)

Step Two

Once cooled, add decorative touches with lettered stamps, acrylic paint or Sharpie markers. Finally, spray one side of the ornament with an acrylic seal. Let dry, flip and spray the other side.

Step Six Once dried completely, thread twine through the hole. Hang from tree or add to gift boxes as gift tags.

Giving Campaign Now in its third year, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign will give away $300,000 this holiday season to help individual community members who would benefit from a helping hand during their time of need. But they need YOUR HELP to make it happen! Maybe you know of a single parent struggling to provide, an elderly person who has experienced loss, a child enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need—even if nobody else does. To preserve and protect the dignity of every recipient, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized in ANY way. (Even those who nominate others may remain anonymous if they choose.) Last year, City Lifestyle was able to give to more than 70 recipients all over the country by sending checks in the mail through New Year’s Eve. (This year, the goal is to double that number with checks ranging in amounts up to $3,000 each.) With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.” Together with Matthew Perry, Chief Sales Officer, Steven adds that the outpouring and gratitude from the recipients was overwhelming and affirmed that this is a tradition they want to continue. “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success,” Matthew adds, “so we in turn want to be a blessing to others.” City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep doing it on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is so rewarding that it perpetuates a cycle of giving.
