LOCAL’S CHOICE RAISE A GLASS TO THESE EXCELLENT BEER AND FOOD PAIRINGS FROM DOWNHILL BREWERY’S FOUNDERS

it ’s all downhill from here! DOUG HYNDMAN AND JAKE MINTURN HAVE A JOB THAT YOU WANT. They own Downhill Brewing Company and, though they do work hard, they get to craft beer and build community for a living. It all started at Arapahoe Basin Ski & Snowboarding Area. They didn’t know each other, but their worlds collided when Jake ran into Doug while skiing merrily downhill. The two exchanged some heated words and thought that would be the end of it. That was until Jake saw Doug drinking a beer in the lodge and went up to apologize. The two were both wearing Colorado

THESE 5 PARKER MEN DREAM, INSPIRE, AND SERVE IN BIG WAYS

ANTHONY IS A SERVICEMAN TO HIS COUNTRY, AN AMBASSADOR FOR CHRIST, AND AN ENCOURAGER TO MANY. HE IS AN EXTROVERT, GOOD FRIEND, AND COMMITTED FAMILY MAN. WHAT IS YOUR JOB? My career started in the United States Air Force. After 8 years in active duty, I honorably separated and became an accountant for the Department of Defense (DoD). Today, my title is Mineral Revenue Analyst for the Office of Natural Resources Revenue (ONRR). In this role, I perform compliance reviews of onshore and offshore gas and oil leases for both federal and tribal land. HOW DO YOU ENVISION YOUR ROLE IN THE COMMUNITY? As a constant in the community for the past 25 years, I live by example, and I strive to be an upstanding citizen to the best of my ability. Another person’s perception of you can become your reality. WHAT ARE YOUR PASSIONS, AND HOW DO YOU INCORPORATE THEM INTO YOUR LIFE? I am passionate about helping military veterans suffering from both mental (PTSD) and physical disabilities sustained during active duty. I have partnered with another Air Force veteran and our mission is to assist veterans as they navigate the facilities and benefits that are available to them. Exercise has become a personal passion of mine. I made a conscious decision to make a lifestyle change when I was on the verge of diabetes. I now work out every day on the elliptical for an hour and the stair stepper for 30 minutes. My collegiate athlete son advised me to start lifting too. Exercise has improved my physical health while maintaining optimal mental health too by reducing negative energy. Not every day is a good day, but it is still not a bad day.

PETE VERCELLIN FIRST AND FOREMOST, PETE IS A FAMILY MAN. HE AND HIS WIFE HAVE FIVE KIDS. HE WORKS HARD AND FULLY COMMITS TO WHATEVER HE DOES. PETE IS A FIRM BELIEVER IN THE RESILIENCY OF THE HUMAN SPIRIT.

WHAT’S YOUR JOB? I worked for Floyd’s 99 Barbershop in Operations for 17 years and helped the company grow from three locations in Denver to a nationwide franchise. I was ready to do something on my own. As the owner of Floyd’s 99 Barbershop in Parker, I look at my job as guidance and a way to inspire my staff to be successful. The cornerstone of my job is service. I want to guide my staff to appreciate every client that visits. Clients have a choice to visit, and when clients choose us, it is important to acknowledge it. HOW DO YOU ENVISION YOUR ROLE IN THE COMMUNITY? We live in Parker, our kids go to school in Parker, and we shop in Parker. I want to be as active as humanly possible by volunteering at SECORCares and holding annual coat drives. A barbershop has been a staple in every little town in the USA. I look at it as a huge responsibility to continue the tradition and for Floyd’s to be a staple in the Parker community. I want to take on new opportunities for community involvement as they present themselves. WHAT ARE YOUR PASSIONS, AND HOW DO YOU INTEGRATE THEM INTO YOUR LIFE? I have a passion for my family and also have a passion for building teams. I love when a plan comes together.

RICK EISENBERG RICK EISENBERG IS A BASEBALL AFICIONADO WHO DESIRES TO LOVE HIS NEIGHBOR AS HIMSELF—EVEN IF THAT NEIGHBOR IS ON THE OPPOSING TEAM! HE GETS ENERGIZED WHEN HE’S AROUND OTHER PASSIONATE PEOPLE AND CAN BE EXTREMELY GOOFY, BUT HE KNOWS WHEN TO PUT ON HIS GAME FACE. WHAT’S YOUR JOB? I am the Director of Player Development and Chaplain for Gameday which is a youth and high school competitive club baseball organization in Parker. I help lead all of our baseball training activities at Gameday and have a primary responsibility to work with our hitters. Each year our teams get better and better, and we believe that there are no shortcuts to player development! As Gameday’s Chaplain, I have committed to making it my priority to mentor as many young people as possible. At Gameday, we talk about faith, character, and excellence and it is my role to influence our young people in all of these areas. HOW DO YOU ENVISION YOUR ROLE IN THE COMMUNITY? As Gameday Chaplain, I have commissioned all of our teams to participate in an outreach event every year of their choice where our kids can get outside in the community and help others. Our teams do everything from packing food for the less fortunate to participating in Tim Tebow’s Night to Shine every year. We want to show our kids that it is really more blessed to give than to receive. I want our community and all of our players to know that we at Gameday really care. WHAT ARE YOUR PASSIONS, AND HOW DO YOU INTEGRATE THEM INTO YOUR LIFE? When my friends find out about the job that I have, they are usually blown away because they know that I love God and baseball. I get to daily partake in both of these passions and make a difference in the lives of young people. I also love collecting baseball cards, hiking, and of course spending time with my lovely wife Hollie and beautiful daughters Eden and Shiloh. IF YOU COULD HAVE ONE IMPRACTICAL DREAM COME TRUE, WHAT WOULD IT BE? To get a call from the Rockies Manager Bud Black to let me know that I will be starting in centerfield tonight for the Rockies. They could use the help, and my dream would come true! 20

AFTER LOSING HIS SISTER, SAMMIE, IN A TRAGIC CAR ACCIDENT LAST YEAR, HIS FAMILY REMAINS TIGHTLY KNIT AND CONFIDENT THAT GOD WILL PULL THEM THROUGH THIS DIFFICULT TIME. WHAT’S YOUR “JOB?” I am a student-athlete at Arizona State University and major in biology (conservation and ecology). I am a heavy-weight wrestler for ASU and also compete on the national level for Team USA. I placed second at the Olympic trials. HOW DO YOU ENVISION YOUR ROLE IN THE COMMUNITY? In Parker, I have a role within my family and a role in the wrestling community. By reaching some of the highest levels in wrestling, I have learned it is possible to do anything you set your sights on, and I am a role model for high school students. I want to give back as much as I can by using my experience to help younger athletes. I can give my time and knowledge to help them navigate the wrestling world. I have stayed in touch with the coaches and my former teammates at Ponderosa High School. WHAT ARE YOUR PASSIONS? Wrestling is my passion, and my college goal is to win the NCAA tournament. World Championships take place every year, and I want to keep competing. I am also passionate about my faith. IF YOU COULD HAVE ONE IMPRACTICAL DREAM COME TRUE, WHAT WOULD IT BE? Being an Olympic gold medalist seemed like an impractical dream not that long ago, but it seems more possible every day. I hope to make that dream come true at the 2024 Olympics.

ROB NELSON ABOVE ALL ELSE, ROB NELSON IS A CONNECTOR. HE IS FUELED BY RELATIONSHIPS AND SEEKS TO BRING PEOPLE TOGETHER FROM EVERY AREA OF HIS LIFE, FROM HIS GRAPHIC DESIGN BUSINESS TO THE VARIOUS PARKER ORGANIZATIONS WHERE HE VOLUNTEERS. ROB IS A LOVING HUSBAND AND PROUD DAD OF THREE YOUNG ADULT GIRLS.

HOW DO YOU ENVISION YOUR ROLE IN THE COMMUNITY? I like to think of myself as a connector and liaison between the Grace Baptist food bank, Ft. Carson, WeCycle, and SECOR. They’ll call me and say that they have a surplus of items, and I’ll pick them up and transfer them to one of the other organizations. I also have a graphic design business and do a lot of work for local places and the Parker Chamber of Commerce. WHAT ARE YOUR PASSIONS, AND HOW DO YOU INTEGRATE THEM INTO YOUR LIFE? My passion is service. It really started in 2015 when my three daughters went to Kenya on a mission trip with Front Range Community Church. Afterward, they told me it was my turn, but I rarely got out of Douglas County as far as serving goes! I went, and it was totally transforming. Everything changed after that and I found myself doing clothing drives and food banks. CAN YOU TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THE DIAPER DIFFERENCE? I began to notice that many moms and families at the food bank would gravitate towards diapers instead of food. Then, an article in the Denver Post talked about how severe the need for diapers was during the pandemic. I thought to myself, “I can wrangle some diapers.” Over twenty businesses have gotten on board now. It’s so integrated and rewarding to feel like we’re all in a boat rowing together. The little bit you serve is minuscule to the blessings you get back.

beans in a whiskey barrel for nine months. The beans absorb the oil and flavor, and the alcohol evaporates once they’re roasted. It looks and tastes similar to a Guinness beer. Though he believes they have excellent coffee, Wes is adamant that the product isn’t his priority. It’s the people. There’s something sacred about his small drive-thru window. Typically, coffee shop community is built through conversations over a table with steaming mugs in hand. However, Wes envisions his trailer as a front porch type of atmosphere.

“I tell people this is my church,” Wes says. “I donate a day’s salary once a month to a local charity, fundraisers are my tithing, my gathering is talking to and praying with people, and my profession that I love the Lord Jesus Christ is all over my property in the form of crosses and a praise sign.”

“I’m old school,” the sixty-year-old says in a thick New York accent. “Everyone in my neighborhood had a front porch. Everything was done on that front porch, from proposals to parties to having your first beer.” Wes has made it his goal to know his customers. Our interview is peppered with conversations as guests drive up to order. He asks an older lady about her doctor’s appointment, converses with a teenage girl about her sister’s coffee addiction, and teases a new dad about his scraggly facial hair. Every customer seems reluctant to drive away after receiving their order. They find a way to continue the conversation a little longer with another question, joke, or story. Wes etches prayer requests from his customers on the wooden frame of the drive-thru window. “This woman was diagnosed with kidney cancer,” Wes says, pointing to a name scribbled in blue ink. “This woman is in remission,” he testifies. The list goes on and on. His friend, who is a pastor, comes in monthly and prays for the list as well.

ARTIST’S PALETTE HOW TWO LOCAL MEN LEVERAGED THE PANDEMIC’S DOWNTIME TO GET CREATIVE

ARTICLE HANNAH ECHOLS GRIESER PHOTOGRAPHY JOLIE RODRIGUEZ

write on! WRITING A BOOK IS AN AMBITIOUS UNDERTAKING. It requires time, dedication, fortitude, and passion. Two local men, Jim Johnson and Tom Welch, embarked on this journey of authorship and their efforts came to fruition earlier this year. The topics of their books are quite different— Jim’s is a playful children’s book about his personable pup and Tom’s is a helpful guide for neurodiverse persons and their parents. However, one thing links them together—both projects were fueled by a motive of love.

JIM JOHNSON GOOD GIRL, SADIE ROSE It’s no secret that the Coronavirus pandemic sequestered people to their households more than usual. For Jim, that meant more walks with his two-and-a-half year old golden doodle. He caught himself punctuating every sentence he said to her with the same refrain: “Good girl, Sadie Rose.” “It occurred to me that she probably thought “good girl” was in her name!” Jim jokes. The more he considered it, the more Jim thought that Sadie Rose would be a great protagonist for a children’s book. His first grandson was on the way as well, and Jim felt that writing a book for the newborn would be the perfect gift to hallmark his presence into the world. “That’s all it was—just a labor of love for my grandson,” he says. Sadie Rose is a fun-loving girl who quickly transitions from play-mode to cuddle-mode. She’s not food driven; she’s toy driven. Out of the 8-10 dogs the Johnsons have had, Sadie Rose is admittedly the favorite. The book simply chronicles this beloved family pet and the ways she earns the respect and gratitude of her ‘parents.’ Jim leveraged the help of talented friends as well, such as the illustrator, Tori Meyers.

The Real Sadie Rose takes a good look at her book!

She crafted detailed images of Sadie Rose and helped Jim throughout the 6-month process of cobbling everything together. At the time this article is being written, Jim has yet to read the book to his new grand baby. However, he’s visiting him in Louisiana and will read it to him after his baptism. If you want to pick up a copy of ‘Good Girl, Sadie Rose’ yourself, it is available on Amazon, the Parker library, and Petit Parker.

ARTIST’S PALETTE (CONTINUED)

TOM WELCH THE BREAKAWAY Graduating school and entering the real world is difficult for anyone. However, for neurodiverse young adults the struggles are amplified. Tom Welch, Psy.D, wrote ‘The Breakaway: A Parent’s Guide to Transitioning the Autistic and Twice Exceptional Adolescent Into Young Adulthood’ to help young adults and their parents navigate this change. Tom is the co-owner and Director of Behavioral Services at Humanex Academy. Humanex Academy is a private school for children grades 6-12 with learning differences and emotional needs. In addition to his work at the school, Tom’s multi-year passion for this book came from working with families and professionals who struggled to approach the transition (the breakaway) from grade-school to young adulthood for neurodiverse individuals. “I really wanted to write something that could help parents slow down, not panic so much, and help them understand who their young adult is. The chapters in the book break down elements that are super critical for developing a strategy that makes sense for their kid(s),” Tom says. According to Tom, when in crisis about the breakaway process parents typically do one of two things. They either revert to what has always worked with their child, which is typically inappropriate after the K-12 age range, or they go to what they personally know best from their own experiences as a neurotypical person in the world. Neither work. To practically aid with this dilemma, Tom’s book includes real world case studies and suggestions for parents. It is designed to help parents develop a winning strategy that is best for their child. There are questions at the end of each chapter to help the reader apply the issues raised in the book. Tom suggests keeping a journal and a notebook to document observations, thoughts, and feelings in each stage of the process. ‘The Breakaway’ can be purchased on Amazon and recently made it onto Amazon’s Hot New Releases list.

HEALTHY LIFESTYLE THE PRO GOLFER’S FITNESS JOURNEY

SCOTT

STALLINGS’

WORKOUT ARTICLE CITY LIFESTYLE

SCOTT STALLINGS DISCOVERED HIS INTEREST IN GOLF AT THE YOUNG AGE OF 3. But it was the “aha moment” for his LOVE of the game that came in 1997 when Tiger Woods won the Masters and would forever change the entire landscape of the industry, as well as what Stallings would aspire to achieve in his future professional endeavors. He was a seven-time tournament winner and was an All-American while attending Tennessee Tech, and he has won on the PGA Tour three times as a professional golfer. After experiencing some health complications, Scott set himself into overdrive to “get it together” and tapped into his natural drive to be one of the best. With the guidance of doctors, surgeons, and his good friend Rich Froning, a four-time Crossfit champion, Scott developed a workout to trim 60 pounds, boasting 10% body fat, revising his daily eating habits, and sleeping healthily through the night. Had Scott not gone to the doctor because of that innate fear, he never would have known the diagnosis of sleep apnea that needed to be addressed. “You only get one body,” he says. “Golf is a grind, but don’t let physicality get in the way of your game,” Scott says. 34

ARTICLE JOAN DAMERON PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

C OM PU T E R S E C U R IT Y WITH MORE AND MORE PEOPLE WORKING FROM HOME AND USING COMPUTERS FOR SCHOOL AND BUSINESS, IT IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN EVER TO PROTECT YOURSELF. Doug Potter, CEO and co-owner of Thread Networks, shares tips on how to protect your device and your valuable information. With 25 years of experience in IT networks and systems, he provides expert advice. “Chances are you are spending a lot more time and money online. You are reading more emails, creating more online accounts, using more software, and paying more subscription fees. Cybercriminals see the opportunities to steal your personal data, your payment information, or scam funds,” Doug says. There are fundamental things everyone should be doing to keep their computer and accounts safe as they go about their online life.
