But there’s no science to finding what you like best.” Last

opened Welcome Home Brewery, the culmination of Aaron’s serious hobby of homebrewing. On a whim about six years ago, Aaron entered a local competition for his Caramel Corn Cream Ale. He won, which earned him a spot at the Great American Beer Festival. He entered again the next year, with the same result. Last fall, Sharon quit her job at CenturyLink to dedicate herself full-time to opening and running Welcome Home Brewery. Aaron, who is still a full-time Arapahoe County Sheriff’s deputy, works as the head brewer. Sharon suggests going to a craft brewery with friends and having everyone order flights with different selections so that everyone can have a taste. “Everyone may taste different things.

Try it; you may like it.” Sharon says just start by reading the beer descriptions and pick ones that sound good to you. “If you’re afraid of beers, start with the lighter blondes. The first craft beer I ever tried was Blue Moon,” she says. In February, Sharon’s brainchild was a Chocolate Covered Strawberry Stout that Aaron turned into reality. Welcome Home also has started a seasonal “pie series” with a Lemon Meringue Pie and will follow that up with flavors such as Mixed Berry A La Mode and Cherry. In honor of May’s Derby Day celebration, Sharon dreamed up a Mint Julep Imperial Blonde, made with bourbon-soaked oak chips and mint leaves. Sharon says Welcome Home has been a dream come true for them, a way to share with the world their love of craft brew and also their love of family and community. They say they are proud supporters of law enforcement and first responders and want their brewery to be a safe place for officers to come relax and be surrounded by family. “This is ours. This is incredible,” says Aaron, looking around at the large bar, decorated in a red, white and blue color theme with industrial lighting and tabletops made of old painted doors. “It’s more fun than sitting in a cubicle,” Sharon says with a smile.

I attended an international boarding school on the foothills of the Himalayas, where 500 students represented 55 different nationalities. While I studied at privileged establishments across the globe, my parents and grandparents served several communities in some of the most underdeveloped parts of India. Their inspiration continues to shape the ethos of my life. I am a 35-year-old wife and mother of two beautiful children. Jesus embodies the perfect example of love as described in 1 Corinthians 13. People are just people everywhere, and our intrinsic needs are the same regardless of the labels we give each other. A country girl at heart, I have lived in Parker for 25 years and enjoy riding my horses and growing hay on my 40-acre ranch east of Parker, where my husband and I are raising our 11-year-old son. Our older children are adults and living on their own. I have worked at the NBC station in Denver for almost 26 years. I volunteer with local animal and horse rescue organizations and visit schools to talk to girls about careers in math and science.” WHAT EXCITES YOU MOST ABOUT THE WORK YOU DO? The weather in Colorado can be life-threatening at any time of the year. I have a healthy respect for Mother Nature as storms in this region can come at you from any direction. I love sharing the science of weather. We have the most amazing clouds here. WHAT CHALLENGES YOU? It is live television because there are no do-overs. I like the challenge of creating a forecast that is interesting and, most importantly, correct. I find it challenging to try to reach everyone across the state in less than three minutes. WHAT INSPIRES YOU? I am inspired by women in my field who are smart and strong and trailblazers and have forged a path for the rest of us to follow. I am inspired by women in my life, like my mom and daughter and friends, women who are real, brave, kind and caring, women I can count on. LESSON YOU HAVE LEARNED SO FAR IN LIFE? Always strive to be your best self. You don’t have to be perfect, but you have to try, even on the hard days. Approach people with empathy and kindness. Be kind and forgiving of yourself.

I moved to Parker from Texas in 2002 to help build and open Parker Adventist Hospital in 2004. I was one of the hospital’s first associates to deliver at Parker Hospital. My daughter was born in 2004. I live in Parker with my husband and three children, and we are proud to live in this thriving, dynamic community.” WHAT EXCITES YOU MOST ABOUT THE WORK YOU DO? My passion is partnering with physicians. I play a pivotal role in the recruitment of countless physicians of various specialties who lead the charge in providing compassionate and personalized care to our community. I am most proud of the sophisticated programs and services developed in partnership with clinicians over the last 15 years. WHAT INSPIRES YOU? My business is intended to be a safe space where women can feel comfortable. We even offer a series of classes on being your best self. I want to help women build businesses, and I open my space on Tuesdays when I can coach them in between clients. I am involved in mock trial, theater, student council, choir, the National Honor Society and Peace Jam. I have volunteered at the library numerous times, as well as with the American Cancer Society.” LESSON YOU HAVE LEARNED SO FAR IN LIFE? When my family and I drove across the country to Parker, I felt alone. I went to school and felt like an outsider, like I was surrounded by people I couldn’t relate to or mesh with. The first couple of months were really rough. And then something hit. I threw myself into school and volunteer activities. A Little Stitch of Love NEEDLE ARTS GUILD AT PARKER ADVENTIST HOSPITAL USES HANDIWORK TO GIVE BACK

JUDGING FROM THE SOUNDS OF LAUGHTER SPILLING OUT OF A CONFERENCE ROOM AND THE CLICKING OF NEEDLES, THE WOMEN OF THE NEEDLE ARTS GUILD HAVE CALLED THEIR MONTHLY MEETING TO ORDER AT PARKER ADVENTIST HOSPITAL. The women, surrounded by skeins of yarn and half-completed projects, work on various knit and crochet projects as President Merry Ettenberg discusses the meeting agenda. The guild, which was created in 2005, is a group of knitters, crocheters, quilters and other crafters who donate their handknits to hospital patients, as well as raise money for projects around the hospital and community. “I love to do it. It maintains my sanity. I’ve knitted since I was 5 years old,” Merry says. 26

Each participant works on completing projects throughout the month, and then they pile them in baskets to give to different hospital departments, such as the newborn ward or cancer center, where nurses distribute to patients. “We hope that some of these things become a family heirloom they can pass on to other babies within the family,” member Ann Clarke says, referring to the newborn receiving blankets, sweaters and hats they make. The women also make adult lap blankets and caps for chemotherapy patients. Many of the women are lifelong knitters and crocheters and say this is a natural way for them to use their talents to bring comfort to those who need it. “We can’t give any more to our families; we drown them with socks and scarves,” says Ann, who has been part of the guild for eight years. Lindsay Zinsmeister, mother of Oakley who was born in 2017, received a blanket and knitted Santa hat made by the guild. “It was so sweet to have something that was handmade and you could tell that, you know, folks put some good amount of time and effort into making those for us,” Lindsay says. Guild member Kathleen Murphy says the guild’s mission is to provide comfort to patients, but it’s as much a comfort to members because of the fellowship and joy everyone brings. “This is probably the most fun because you’re sharing all your knowledge and your experience and patterns and just generally making friends,” Kathleen says. The guild raises money from its annual craft sale, with proceeds going toward art projects at the hospital, such as the large cross that now hangs in the hospital lobby; and the art installation titled “Gratitude” on the third floor, which houses the women’s and babies units. They also contribute to SECOR Cares nonprofit organization in Parker. The guild occasionally receives thank-you notes from patients, but members say they craft for the pure enjoyment and knowledge that they are spreading joy. “It’s giving back and trying to make a little bit of difference somewhere,” says new member Bobbie King. Or, as the Needle Arts Guild’s motto says: It’s “Stitching love for our community.”
