Michaela, her sister Madison Plank and their mom say they’ve shared lots of late nights and achy hands the past couple of years to create their dream fashion brand, P.S. Wares, which stands for Plank Sisters Wares. “A lot of the jewelry is from recycled horse tack and recycled leathers,” Michaela says. And Madison says they also search for flannel shirts and other Western-style pieces to embellish with lace trim, cutouts and dip-dye. “Don’t throw things away. Don’t make our landfill bigger than it already is,” Kim says. Kim says her lifelong love of Native American and Spanish patterns adds character and a signature look to the P.S. Wares brand. Whether it’s leather fringe earrings or a saddle-blanket clutch with turquoise-rock accents, each piece is unique so that their clients know they are wearing something no one else has, the women say. The mother and daughters say they put their heart into each piece and try to make something they’d be proud to own themselves. “I made a little tiny purse and the handles are the horses’ bits that fit in their mouth,” Kim says. She braided leather on the top of the handle so the user’s hands wouldn’t have to directly touch the slippery metal. “I want to leave my mark,” Kim says. IT’S A CHILLY WINTER DAY, AND ELEVATION CYCLES OF PARKER SALES MANAGER DON KRIEG AND OWNER TYLER PILGER ARE OUTSIDE THE SHOP TALKING ELECTRIC BICYCLES. It’s a topic Don knows a lot about. “I didn’t buy one to replace my bicycle; I bought it to replace my car,” Don says. He commutes from his home in Lakewood to work in Parker on his Trek Super Commuter Class 3 electric bicycle, a good 60-mile round trip. Don says he typically rides three to four days a week when the weather is decent. “I can do the exact same commute time on this,” says Don, pointing to his Trek electric, “that I can on that [his truck], and I’m exercising. And I’m in a better mood.” Don and Tyler say electric bicycles are fun to ride and good for the environment, eliminating pollution and congestion by the typical auto commute. “Every bit that you can do to keep a car off the road, I think, is a really big deal,” Don says. Electric bicycles are an equalizer for both avid cyclists and the leisurely rider because of their pedal assist function. They also help elderly cyclists or those with knee or hip issues feel safe and comfortable throughout their ride. “One person doesn’t feel like they’re holding the other up, and they get

Pedaling on an electric bike will turn on its motor, called the pedal assist. The motor stops when you stop pedaling. Electric bikes have three classifica-

tions: Class 1 and 2 go up to 18 mph. Class 1 has a pedal assist, and class 2 uses a throttle. Class 3 electric bikes can go up to 28 mph and are only meant for roads. Just like a cell phone, an electric bike plugs directly into an outlet. The battery can also be taken off and plugged in.
A fully charged electric bike can travel 50–70 miles.

Ah, April! After a long winter, this month holds the promise of warmer days spent outdoors with friends and family while chirping birds set the soundtrack for spring. As the flowers begin to peek out from their winter slumber, this is the time of year that has me yearning for fresh seasonal fare and refreshing cocktails shared over laughs and love. And not only is it a great time to plan a party alfresco; with Earth Day on April 22, it is also the perfect time to connect with Mother Earth and plan the perfect eco-friendly garden party. So get ready to send out your e-vite (save that beautiful hand-lettered paper invitation for another time) and start putting together a delectable seasonal menu that showcases our local bounty. Plus, if you plan the date for your spring soiree in May, you can source the majority of your menu from the best farmers market in the Denver area right here in Parker. We may be slightly biased with our affinity for the Parker Farmers Market, but the recurring “Best Of” awards the market has received from Denver A-List speak for themselves. The best thing about a garden party is that minimal decorations are needed. Use your garden, backyard or favorite outdoor space as the backdrop, and find items you already have to spruce up the table. Mirrors used as trays can add a touch of elegance to your table setting and are versatile enough to reuse in your home. My favorite vintage mirrors were found at a local antique store, which is the perfect place to implement the “reuse” in reduce, reuse, recycle. If you truly insist on easy cleanup, many local stores now carry compostable paper products made from recyclable materials; however, we lean toward reusable, washable serve-ware. You can find stylish options for outdoor dining in melamine which doesn’t break easily and can be used for years to come at places like HomeGoods and even your local grocery store.

Growing up, cloth napkins were reserved for holidays and special occasions. But celebrating spring is as special of an occasion as any, so break out those cloth napkins. Not only will you have one less thing to throw away, but your guests will also feel extra special. Finally, fresh leaves, flowers and greenery from your own garden are the perfect centerpieces, and you can’t get more local than right outside your back door. Keep the food simple. A green salad with bright ingredients, in-season veggies and crusty bread add the perfect accompaniments to a light entree that will be as refreshing as the spring weather. And your guests will still have room for dessert, too. Try an easy yet delicious layered fruit parfait or an airy mousse, both of which can be prepped ahead and refrigerated until you are ready to serve. You can change the color scheme or theme throughout the spring and summer season with flowers or plants while using many of the same neutral decorative items. Time to open a bottle of your favorite wine from one of Parker’s local winemakers and let the garden party season begin! 24

Beet-Pickled Deviled Eggs Add a pop of color to your menu with this pretty, earthy and delicious twist on a classic dish. INGREDIENTS ++ 1 cup apple cider vinegar, plus 3 tablespoons, divided ++ 1 tablespoon granulated sugar, plus a pinch, divided ++ 2 1/4 teaspoons kosher salt, plus a pinch, divided ++ 1 small red beet, peeled and halved ++ 12 hard-boiled eggs, peeled ++ 1/2 cup mayonnaise ++ 4 tablespoons mustard ++ 1/4 cup finely chopped fresh herbs, such as basil, tarragon or chives, plus more for garnish ++ 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper ++ Small jar of anchovies DIRECTIONS In a medium pot, mix 1 cup apple cider vinegar, 1 tablespoon sugar, 2 teaspoons salt and 3 cups water. Add the beet and bring to a boil, then remove from heat and let cool slightly. Pour into a large heat-safe jar or bowl (including beet). Add eggs, stir and refrigerate at least 3 hours (stirring occasionally) or overnight for a darker shade of pink. Remove eggs from liquid. Halve eggs (reserving the whites) and gently transfer the yolks to a bowl. Add 1 tablespoon vinegar, mayonnaise, herbs and anchovy paste to the yolks. Season with 1/4 teaspoon each salt and pepper, then spoon or pipe the filling into the egg whites. Sprinkle with additional herbs, if desired, and top with halved anchovies. Serve.

Kiva says BlueMountain and the stacks of dresses show the overwhelming support her nonprofit formalwear shop, Parker Secret Closet, has received over the past year. The boutique offers free formalwear to teens, mostly in exchange for volunteer hours or at-will donations, and operates out of three storage units. BlueMountain Self Storage donated the space to Parker Secret Closet when the owner heard about its mission and need for a public location. Parker Secret Closet started as an idea a couple of years ago from a friend of Kiva’s, who heard that her daughter’s friend was foregoing prom because she couldn’t afford a dress and accessories. She asked for help on social media, hoping a neighbor would drop off a new, once-used prom dress for her daughter’s friend. Word spread, and hundreds of dresses started showing up at her house, mostly from strangers. Kiva offered to take over the donations and offer appointments to the hundreds of girls, who, all by word of mouth, were eager to find a gently used prom or home-

Kiva says Parker Secret Closet has grown because it just makes sense. PARKER 20 YEARS AGO, HE HAD AN OPEN VIEW ACROSS THE TWO LANES OF DRANSFELDT ROAD AND A DREAM OF MAKING A LIVING FIXING CARS. Dennis has seen Extreme grow along with Dransfeldt, which has
morphed into a busy four-lane thoroughfare. “I’ve watched Parker grow up. When I started my shop, there were only nine
auto shops in town. There was no Home Depot, no Walmart or Target,” Dennis says. “Now there are 52 auto shops in the area—lots of competition.” Despite all the changes in his town, Dennis says he has always focused on treating his employees and customers right. Many of his employees have been with him for several years, which he contributes to the success of his business. “One gentleman has been with me for 19 years. When you have that kind of relationship with them, you become family. We appreciate them, and we take care of them. If we take care of them, they’ll take care of the customers,” Dennis says. “It’s a service industry. Unless you take care of your customers, they won’t come back.” Dennis is also involved in the Parker Chamber of Commerce and the Rotary Club of Parker and helps the Parker Task Force with clients who need car repairs to be able to get to work. “I want to give back to the community we live in. They provide us with our living, so we want to give back. It teaches my people to give back too.” For the past couple of years, Dennis has been involved in the Student of the Month through the Rotary Club, helping recognize Parker high school students for their academic and community work and awarding scholarships. “These kids we get, it’s amazing what they do and what they do for the community,” Dennis says. Dennis has lived in Colorado since 1967, when his drill-sergeant dad finished up a tour in Vietnam and moved his family back to his home state. He started tinkering in the garage as a high school student at Aurora’s Hinkley. That lifelong passion for cars comes through on Dennis’ guest spots on the call-in radio show Drive Radio on AM 560 KLZ, sponsored by Colorado Select NAPA AutoCare Centers. “It’s a lot of fun. You have to be transparent in that if you say something on the air, you’d better be able to back it up when they walk into your shop.” He says he gets to talk about his lifelong passion for cars and gets listeners to call in with their favorites—the sexiest car, favorite car color, best and worst cars in the snow. Some things just aren’t up for debate for Dennis. Trucks should be white. An Impala ’63 should be gold. But what’s best in the Colorado snow?
