Parker Parks and Recreation Senior Stroll Nearly 150 senior citizens participated in Parker Parks and Recreation’s 10th annual Senior Stroll event on May 30 at O’Brien Park in Parker. The event is a part of National Senior Health and Fitness Day and featured a 1-mile stroll around the park, followed by a light breakfast and socializing with friends.

ARTICLE JENNIFER STARBUCK PHOTOGRAPHY BRIAN JOHNSON ARMY COMBAT VETERAN TONY DREES IS PASSIONATE ABOUT HELPING VETERANS THRIVE IN CIVILIAN LIFE, ESPECIALLY THOSE WHO COME HOME WITH DEBILITATING PHYSICAL AND EMOTIONAL INJURIES. Tony is executive director for Veteran’s Passport to Hope, a Colorado-based nonprofit that advocates for veteran’s issues and raises money and awareness for organizations that are already providing vital services for vets — or, warriors, as Tony calls them. Tony has spent the past 26 years adapting to life as a wounded warrior. His story started in the first Gulf War, when a Scud missile attack in Saudi Arabia killed 28 soldiers and badly injured his right leg. In February, doctors finally had to amputate his leg after years of surgeries and complications. Tony says his work with Veteran’s Passport to Hope is centered on helping veterans embrace a warrior lifestyle, which includes drawing up a battle plan for success in all aspects of life, such as family, finances, and physical and emotional fitness. “It’s helpful in times of duress if you have a set of navigation tools and guides so you can stay focused,” Tony says. Vets are more susceptible to depression, opioid and other chemical addictions, divorce, and homelessness. A veteran comes home immersed in military hierarchy and vocabulary, so it’s like coming back speaking a foreign language. “People struggle, wanting to know what they’re supposed to do after their service,” Tony says. “But I say, ‘what are you good at and what do you enjoy? You tell me that and I’ll tell you how to adapt.’” Tony says he had his 15 minutes of fame after that missile attack in 1991, being featured at the time in national publications. But his story had only just started, and it’s been a process of ups and downs since. “I’ve been homeless. I’ve been addicted to opioids. I’ve been depressed,” Tony says. “I’m not here repping my story like I’m super soldier. I have to be representative of what it’s like for warrior transition stories.”

ANOTHER LIVING ROOM WITH YOUR BACKYARD. How can you make this bonus square footage into a place everyone wants to kick back and relish our summer evenings? Jessica Duce of JDuce Design in Parker recommends spacing out distinct zones for different activities, which will make even the smallest yard feel spacious. Consider a drink station with a well-stocked bar cart (dry or wet); surrounding a fire pit with cozy poufs, bean bags and a basket filled with throw blankets; or setting out yard games such as cornhole toss or bocce ball.

1 Jessica says the key to great backyard entertaining is setting up appetizers far away from the main dishes, and the same for the drinks. This will encourage people to spread out in the yard and mingle. “That way,” Jessica says, “You expand your living space and no one will feel cramped.” In the photo above, the tabletop s’mores station doesn’t require much space or an actual fire pit. Jessica says you can DIY marshmallow roasters by filling ceramic flower pots with lava rocks and Sterno S’mores Heat fuel cans. Set up several of these roasting stations throughout the yard for a fun, low-maintenance dessert activity.

2 Jessica says when it comes to choosing accent pieces for your seating area, think of adding contrast, both in texture and color. If you have smooth-fabric pillows, throw in some with a nubby weave. Choose some accent pillows or throw blankets with a bright pop of color, which will add interest to the browns and beiges of patio furniture or surrounding stonework. Consider different textures of seagrass placemats or a shiny metallic tray. Jessica says create your outdoor vignettes based on how you want to use the space, such as playing yard games or lounging by a fire pit. As long as you stick to the same scale and general color palette, then your space will flow well. And remember: It doesn’t have to be too matchy-matchy to work. Located at Roxborough Cove on Chatfield Reservoir, Colorado Watersports has options for everyone. “Our water activities are great for the entire family. We have something for all ages and all abilities,” says camp director Caroline Powell. Kids camps are offered on a weekly or drop-in basis, and experienced instructors teach water safety, sailing, kayaking and standup paddleboarding to kids ages 5-15. Classes include ladies’ and youth sailing programs. Sumits Yoga is a partner and offers SUP yoga on weekends.

FROZEN LEMONADE ICE POPS WITH JELL-O WHAT YOU NEED Popsicle molds Popsicle sticks Jell-O (we recommend berry blue and watermelon) 4 cups cold water 1 cup Country Time lemonade drink mix 1 tub (12 ounces) Cool Whip, thawed 1 tablespoon lemon zest WHAT YOU DO 1. Prepare the Jell-O as directed on the box. Pour into dishes so about 1 inch thick and refrigerate until set. 2. Blend water, lemonade mix, Cool Whip and lemon zest until smooth. 3. When Jell-O is set, remove from dishes and slice into small cubes (they’ll need to fit in the popsicle molds). 4. Fill the popsicle molds about halfway with Jell-O cubes, then fill the remaining space with the blended lemonade mixture. 5. Add popsicle sticks if needed and freeze overnight.
