f I had a dime for every time I heard the expression, "Work hard, play hard," well, I'd have a lot of dimes.

Whatever happened to making work and play fit seamlessly into our lives, instead of turning them into life-or-death pursuits in which one endeavor rescues us from the perils of the other? Sure, there’s a certain hardcore, risk-taking image we have of ourselves as Coloradans, perpetuated by the rest of country.

But what if we looked at both work and play as necessary and integral parts of every day? What if we made a point of leaving work at a reasonable time? What if we used those extra daylight hours of summer to get outside every afternoon, whether that means biking 20 miles, or playing Cornhole in the backyard? Would it prevent burnout at work, or injuries sustained from being “weekend warriors”? Would it make us happier, more balanced people? The truth is, I don’t know. As someone who spent much of her career shooting videos on military “fast boats” and chasing down unhappy interview subjects for stories, this is all a new concept for me. I’ve been the guiltiest of the guilty when it comes to overindulging on all fronts, both work and play. But all indicators seem to point to stepping back a little bit and smelling the roses, at least for me. So I’ll cut this letter short and take the dog for a walk.

hen Parker-based designer Jessica Duce was asked by Oregon homeowners Cass and Gary Pietrok to redesign the interior and exterior for their coastal VRBO, she knew just

where to start. “I actually stayed in the property for the owners,” says Duce. "This is a great way to get the perspective of the guest. I like to visit the area around the property in person or online and take note of what guests would see or experience, from sights to sounds.” CONTINUED >

The Pietroks wanted the home to feel more polished and appropriate for its setting and price point, “with a complement to the ocean theme,” said Duce. “The furnishings and decor were dated or worn in some areas, and the aesthetic needed a refresh.” In addition, the team needed to add a bedroom to increase the sleeping capacity from 20 to 24, which required renovation. The challenge: completing all redesign and construction between guest stays. “We had a 10-day window for construction and completion and a three-day window for redesign and decorating.” The team also re-designed the two-bedroom guest house to incorporate a new eat-in kitchen and media/gaming area. “We ended up adding some new element or refresh to every room of the house,” said Duce. “ The main house is more ‘beach-chic retreat.’ The guest house is a beach theme with a nod to surfing.” The result? An Oregon oasis for families who favor luxe vacations. " This project was a success,” says Gary Pietrok. “Jessica was in sync with our objectives, executing from 1600 miles away, on an accelerated 10-day renovation timeline, with renters on both sides of the timeline.”

An outdoor barbecue fits into countless array of structures, whether it’s a simple pergola, umbrella-shaded counter space, covered patio, or a massive shake-shingle gazebo. Outdoor pizza ovens have become a hot trend in recent years, according to Kyle. Wood-burning ovens take your pizza to the next level, providing superior flavor and, many say, help retain the nutrients in the pizza toppings. According to Kyle, another huge trend in outdoor barbecuing is the Big Green Egg. In case you haven’t heard, the Big Green Egg is a ceramic dome cooker that uses charcoal or wood fuel. It’s a prototype of an ancient cooking vessel from the Chinese Qin Dynasty that has gained popularity due to the added flavor it infuses into the meat. “These are accessories that would go outside of the grill, with platforms that are built in for them,” he says. Additional amenities that can be added include a stove, refrigerator, wine chiller, sink, pellet grill, and warming drawer. What’s the biggest mistake people make when dreaming up their outdoor barbecue? “Underestimating square footage.” Kyle says. “Once you start adding the built-ins, you lose a bunch of space.” He recommends a minimum of 100 square feet for a basic barbecue, but at least 800 square feet is typically needed for a patio that includes a seating area, a fire element and an outdoor kitchen. Ready for that dreamy barbecue? “If the patio is already in place, we can get a space completed in 3-4 days,” Kyle says. Let's fire up that grill!
