What makes a house a home?

read once that a cat makes a house a home. While I do have a cat that pretty much never leaves the house, I’m just not willing to give her that much credit. It feels so cliched to say it’s a family that makes a house a home, but for me “home” is felt in those corners of the house with tangible evidence of our lives together -- the couches where we watch movies, the kitchen where we cook, eat and talk about the day, the mélange of shoes by the front door, and the “catchall” table in the entryway that plays host to keys, phones and sunglasses.

Whatever “home” means to you, we hope you’ll enjoy our annual Home Issue! Our writers, editors and photographers had so much fun rounding up beautiful, comfortable trends for the home. We love the natural, textured materials used by builder Michael Payne in his pristine, woodland dream house (“Ethereal and Enduring,” pg. 20) and the tips for clean minimalism in “Minimalize Your Space,” on page 14. On page 28 you’ll learn how the “Bird Man” of Franktown is helping us to co-exist, literally, with the birds and the bees. Zonta Douglas County hosts Trivia Night to raise funds for local and regional nonprofits and a lucky student heading off to college. 1. Just get rid of these things—seriously. Why are you keeping them? 2. If you’re so overwhelmed that you don’t know where to begin, try starting with one small area that haunts you the most—a section of kitchen counter, a small table top. 3. Pick up five things and return them to their proper location. These should be items you’re used to seeing deposited on counters or floors: mail, the dog’s leash, a newspaper section, your daughter’s hair clip, random sport socks. If you don’t have a designated place for them, think about one that would suit, and start using it all the time. 4. Give yourself the gift of a “Maybe” box that you can put things in for now. Sometimes, even though we know we should get rid of something, we can’t quite let it go. Look at the random selection you’ve kept a few months down the road—chances are it will all go straight to donation. 5. Be a more conscious shopper so that you’re not filling your decluttered home with more clutter. Whenever you see something you want, add it to an ongoing list with the date you first saw it, and then revisit the list 30 days later. You may find when you check back that the urge to purchase it has gone. And if you do decide to get it, at least you’ve given the item the time and consideration it deserves. Living in a cluttered home or trying to work in a cluttered office is an exercise in frustration. Car keys get swallowed up, you can’t locate your important report in time for your meeting, or you replace something you can’t find only to have the original turn up shortly after. Isn’t that the worst? Make sure that never happens again by getting clutter under control... one unpaired sock at a time. SIX THINGS YOU CAN PART WITH

n honor of Spring’s imminent arrival, this week’s icon of design is…Eero Saarinen’s Tulip tables and chairs! Crazy name, crazy furniture. This guy is a little confusing, as his daddy-o, Eliel

Saarinen was also a famous designer and director of the Cranbrook Academy of Art, where Saarinen eventually taught as well (I know you must be getting sick of hearing about that place, but I swear–it’s a good name to know!). But I do know you’ve seen his tulip tables, and you probably recognize his chairs as well! So, what’s the story behind these Mod pedestal pieces? Saarinen was born and raised in Finland and emigrated to America with his parents when he was just 13. After studying sculpture as a young man in Paris, he trained as an architect at Yale. Fun fact alert: Saarinen’s buildings and monuments are all around us! Not only did he design the St. Louis Golden Arch, but the TWA terminal at JFK and Dulles International Airport.

Said to have been inspired by a street sign, they were formed from an aluminum base and fiberglass shell. Although Saarinen wanted the pieces to be manufactured from a single material, plastic hadn’t yet been developed in 1958 that was strong enough for the design. Plastics had become incredibly popular in furniture design of the 1960s, serving as an antidote to the hard, cold surfaces of Bauhaus modernism. Rather obviously, plastic also lent itself much more easily to organic sculptural forms than, say, tubular steel. And it was cheap. Win, win. Saarinen liked to say that his tulip tables and chairs cleaned up “the slum of legs” that supported basically all tables and chairs. I’d have to say I agree with him–his tulip tables are lovely in their simplicity and clean lines, don’t you think?

How home builder Michael Payne created a celestial dwelling that's down-to-earth

hen home builder Michael Payne of Monarch Builders started crafting a spec home in Colorado Golf Club, he wanted to inspire the same sense of awe and reverence he infuses into the churches he’s built over the years. "I had this vision for a home that was breathtaking and comfortable, and that stayed true to this beautifully wooded setting," says Payne. Known for constructing homes that are in sync with the natural topography of its existing lot, Payne worked with Karen Keating of TKP Architects to create a

woodland retreat that is at once celestial and tactile. Using exquisite, unexpected materials throughout, the team created a light-infused oasis that pays respect to its majestic pine forest setting in a way that’s both enchanted and grounding. While custom woodwork of rich knotty alder and reclaimed barn wood doors feel rich and enduring, features like the floating wood-and-steel staircase and

The variety of exterior material choices and textures was working so well with the natural landscape. Yet the abrupt angles and linear design elements created a modern interpretation that even the late Frank Lloyd Wright would have been proud of. What made the shoot so much fun was that everywhere you looked there were intriguing - no, mind-blowing - elements of light and beauty in every detail. HOW DID YOU CHOOSE THE MIX OF CLOSE-UP SHOTS WITH THE SWEEPING SCAPES ALL AROUND?

The day before the shoot I walked the property and found the angles I thought I could work with best. I did the same thing with the interior, walking each room from corner to corner to watch for light streaming in from huge open window scapes. The shot list was long, so I managed my time by assessing the amount of available light in each room at a particular time of day. WHAT WERE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE FEATURES?

Stout Chocola te Brownies

INGREDIENTS

• ½ cup stout beer • 1/4 cup espesso or strong cold brew • 10 ounces 60% bittersweet chocolate chips • 1 cup butter • 1 cup sugar • 1 teaspoon vanilla • ½ teaspoon kosher salt • 3 eggs • 1 cup flour INSTRUCTIONS

• Preheat oven at 250 degrees F. Prepare a 9" X 9" baking pan with parchment paper allowing the paper to hang over the edges and spray with cooking spray. • Bring stout to a boil and reduce to simmer and cook for about 10 minutes or until reduced to ¼ cup. Set aside to cool. • In a double boiler or a small bowl atop a small saucepan filled with 1 inch of water, melt chocolate chips and butter over high heat, stirring occasionally, until melted. • Pour melted chocolate into a medium bowl and cool slightly. Add sugar, vanilla, salt and stout and mix well with a whisk or wooden spoon. Add eggs one at a time, mixing just until combined before adding the next egg. • Fold flour into mixture and pour into baking pan. Bake for one hour or until a toothpick comes out clean. Allow to cool in pan for 2 hours or overnight to firm up for best cutting. Dust with powdered sugar if desired. PHOTOGRAPHY COLLEEN KELLY 32
