ello again Parker, I just wanted to take the opportunity to thank all of the businesses who have stood beside us and especially those who partnered with us. Parker Lifestyle is a great publication that is filled with local stories and contributions from many of you who understand what this town needs. Please continue to reach out and support this publication and make it yours. While the folks running the magazine will change with the November issue, our town will continue to receive the excellent hyper-local coverage that it's become used to the last 18 months. It's been a pleasure calling Parker home and trying to help our local businesses thrive.

This October issue is about all of those that give back. Parker is a community that cares and has so many that have hearts of gold and want to give their time and energy to their community. We hope that you are inspired to invest more of yourselves in your community as well. It is easy to see that Parker is growing, but if you act now, you can have a say in that direction or help with a committee or organization that interests you. Be inspired to bring about a community that dedicates itself to what is important and is something you can believe in. Thank you for everything that you have given my wife and I, along with our family. Thank you for growing in a way that keeps our town just that, a town. DOUGLAS COUNTY HIGH SCHOOLS MAKE HEADLINES Chaparral High School was included on Newsweek magazine’s annual list of top 500 high schools in the country. The Parker school ranked 329 on the list, boasting a 98.8 percent graduation rate. Juniors throughout the Douglas County School District (DCSD) also made a name for themselves in the 2016 ACT college entrance exam. Results released on Aug. 11 showed an increase in the district’s average composite score to 22.5 this year - from 21.9 in 2015. The state’s 2016 average composite score is 20.4.

PARKER PD LAUNCHES NEW APP TO CONNECT WITH RESIDENTS The Parker Police Department has launched a free app, My Police Department (MyPD), to allow citizens to connect with the department from their smartphones. Usable on Android or iPhone, this app gives residents an easy way to contact the police department with tips right when they see them. For example, residents could take a picture of graffiti, submit it under the “submit a tip” tab and be on their way in less than 2 minutes. he Parker Arts, Culture and Events (PACE) Center has had an incredibly first five years, providing quality entertainment and cultural education for thousands of Parker area residents. “I have been amazed by how the Parker citizens have embraced this building and the work we do here,” says Parker Cultural Director Elaine Mariner. “Parker is special in that way. People have such an affinity for this town.” Since opening in October 2011, the Center has accumulated some incredible statistics. To start, there have been almost 1,000 performances in its 536-seat theater. The PACE Center also has: 1. And some of those who step up to help with the PTF’s annual Thanksgiving and Christmas Adopta-Family programs are the same people who once needed help. Now that they are back on their feet, they want to help others who are not doing as well. “I would like to return the favor and adopt a family in need this year,” wrote one former recipient of the PTF’s Christmas program. “Just knowing the joy you all brought to us, I can’t help but want to pass along the help that my family once needed.” Both programs make a world of difference for Parker area families who are struggling to make ends meet. The assistance, food and gifts provided by the Task Force and the sponsor families remove what could have been a time of heartbreak for many families. And to my surprise, an enormous tub was being brought out to my car. An entire 20-gallon tub was full of presents for my family. I was unprepared for the tears that started to fill my eyes and the relief that overcame me, as I now knew my kids would have presents to open Christmas morning.” 24

That is just one of the many stories that warms the hearts of the dozens of volunteers and sponsor families each year. Thanks to these efforts, 405 members of 125 families enjoyed a 2015 Christmas they wouldn’t otherwise have been able to have and 247 families were given complete Thanksgiving meals. HERE’S HOW IT WORKS:

For Thanksgiving, area residents are asked to donate money or a food basket, complete with all the Thanksgiving essentials, including turkey, pie, cranberry sauce and stuffing, for a family of four to six people. For those who don’t want to put together a whole meal in baskets, tubs or boxes, monetary and gift card donations are also accepted. For the Christmas program, people, businesses and organizations step up to adopt families and purchase the gifts that are included on the needy families’ wish lists. Many sponsors participate each year and some even ask to adopt large families. In 2015, for example, there was one family of seven people, eight families of six and 10 families with five members. The gifts are typically dropped off by sponsor families before Dec. 15, so that client families can pick them up on a different day. The details for both of these programs for 2016 were still being worked out at press time. LOCAL PAGEANT QUEEN INSPIRED TO EVOKE CHANGE

s Mrs. Parker 2017, Stacey James is a successful business woman who has her hands full serving with multiple charities. Her journey to the Mrs. Colorado America stage is largely fueled by a burning motivation to give back to her community. She is the owner of Stacey James Salons and Spa near Parker's Stonegate neighborhood. She opened the salon when her daughter earned her license as an aesthetician in 2010. James was already an experienced stylist, and they wanted to work as a team. When she had trouble finding

qualified stylists, she decided to open her own beauty school. Hence, the Stacey James Institute was born. “It was one way I felt I could give back to the community. I saw a need and knew I could fill it.” James’ success has been a combination of hard work and good fortune, and she knows she has been blessed. She continually sees an opportunity to exercise her generosity, and it was the Mrs. Colorado America pageant that impressed her when she was looking for another way to make an impact.

“Some people have said to me, ‘you’re going to make a difference with or without a crown,’ and that’s true. But people pay a little more attention when you call up and say, ‘I’m Mrs. Parker’,” says James. The decision to compete did not come easily, however. After losing 110 pounds, James realized an internal transformation had also taken place. Although she had always been a generous person, she began to see more clearly that giving to her community was what made her happy. Each year, she donates eight gift baskets loaded with salon products and gift cards, which are used for silent auctions and prizes for charity events. Throughout the year, she provides hair and nail services to women who are trying to get back on their feet by partnering with SECOR, a ministry of Southeast Christian Church. She is passionate about the non-profit organization Mission 22. “With a military background, it’s near and dear to me. I was shocked that the Post Traumatic Stress Disorder in our veterans leads to 22 suicides per day in this country.” Currently, she provides funding, “but I’m planning on making appearances. I’d like to do more, I believe it’s a huge crisis. I’d like to embrace the veterans.” When asked if she would take the chance to live somewhere else, she replies brightly, “I’ve been here for 20 years and feel like my roots are here.” James and her husband have been married for as long as she’s been in Parker, and they’ve raised their blended family of five here. “My husband and I always wanted to have roots somewhere. Grady MacDougal

Grady MacDougal is a 6th grader at a local Parker middle school. He was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis in early 2015. Grady is one of four children in his active family. He is upbeat and has a zeal for life. Grady loves basketball, playing any sport with his friends and having some down time with electronics and video games -- all while taking approximately 30 pills and additional treatments each day to manage his symptoms. Grady’s mom says, “He is healthier now than he has ever been. All of the medicine is working!” As Castillo spent time with Grady’s family, he learned more about the disease and its effect on the lungs and digestive system. 28

As a dedicated assistant vice president and banking center manager of Community Banks of Colorado, Castillo is no stranger to hard work and perseverance. Not only does Castillo bring a diverse, professional background, he also has a kind and caring heart that brings so much to the Parker community. So it would come as no surprise that when nominated and selected to be one of Colorado’s Finest 2016 for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation that he would meet the challenge head on. He knew that he would be making a commitment to raise $5,000 to help the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation realize its mission of controlling and curing cystic fibrosis. He knew that he would have to roll up his sleeves and determine the most efficient way to meet his fundraising goal. What Castillo did not know is that he would also meet one of the greatest 11-year old boys he has ever known--Grady MacDougal.

This devastating genetic disease affects many people; there are more than 10 million Americans who are symptomless carriers of the defective cystic fibrosis gene. Castillo was inspired after having met Grady and armed with even more knowledge about the disease, he has continued his fundraising efforts. To date, he not only met, but has exceeded his $5,000 goal. Recently, he raised the goal to $7,000 and will no doubt reach beyond that goal as well. Later this month, Castillo will be recognized as an “outstanding young professional in the community” at a cystic fibrosis event and celebration. He is truly one of Colorado’s finest! One in 21, in fact, to be receiving this

prestigious Colorado honor and distinction. Castillo was equally honored to have met Grady MacDougal. Castillo and Grady -two guys unlikely to meet -- except they certainly did meet. Two guys, one disease, one mission, one goal -- finding a cure through lifesaving research. Truly inspiring!
