How exciting the school year is here and what a joy kids bring to our lives. It takes a village to raise them and what better village to be in than ours? Truly. Our care, attention and intention shapes how they are raised and who they become.

For our Family Issue, we are honored to feature Ann Higginbottom and her family in University Park. She is making an impact both inside and outside of our community and celebrates the launch of her children's book, Bigger than Me. ANN HIGGINBOTTOM'S JOURNEY FROM HYER ELEMENTARY TO BIGGER THAN ME AUTHOR INTERTWINES FAMILY, BASEBALL AND COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP.
ARTICLE BY LAUREN STONE
Ann Higginbottom’s story begins right where she is today, give or take a couple of blocks. Long before she became the successful author of Bigger Than Me , executive director of Kershaw’s challenge and PTA president, Ann grew up walking distance from Hyer Elementary. Now, living across the street from her alma mater elementary school and leading the school board just like her mother did, Ann has managed to intertwine all

her passions into everything she does: baseball, family and community.
Upon graduating from Texas A&M, Ann moved back to Highland Park where she met and married fellow HP grad and pastor at Park Cities Presbyterian Church, Robby Higginbottom. With their two baseball-loving sons, the Higginbottoms moved a couple doors down from Ann’s sister Ellen and brother-in-law, Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher,
Clayton Kershaw. “It’s so full circle,” she says. “We’re back in the community that we grew up knowing and loving, and our boys are playing it out as well.”
Driven by her passion for family and community, Ann became the executive director of Kershaw’s Challenge, a charity started by the Kershaws to serve vulnerable and at-risk children living in Los Angeles, Dallas, Zambia and the Dominican Republic. The culmination
"I FEEL LIKE THE LORD GAVE ME THE VISION AND THE TITLE."
of this work, combined with her family’s love of baseball and her knack for writing comes to life in Ann’s latest book: Bigger Than Me.
Ann had always longed for rich, relatable literature for her kids. Having published a few devotionals and children’s books, she knew how to navigate the process of writing and publishing a book, but the idea for Bigger Than Me came to her years before that process began.
“Probably about five years ago, I had the idea for the book,” she says, “I feel like the Lord gave me the vision and the

title, so I wrote down ‘Bigger Than Me’ on a sticky note, and it sat in my bathroom drawer for years. Then one day, about two years ago, I sat down and wrote it — it came to me really naturally. Then, my husband, who’s a great writer, edited it for me, and I printed it out and left it on my sister’s countertop.”
A true story told through the eyes of Ann’s nephew Charley, Bigger Than Me shows what it’s like for a little boy growing up with a father in the MLB. “The whole concept is that he’s walking into this world, and everything’s bigger than

him, and his dad is so much bigger than him,” Ann says. “He’s just seeing it all with these wide eyes. And then it’s dad, Clayton, saying, buddy, that’s because the story is a lot bigger, and we’re part of a bigger purpose.”
Fittingly sold at Dodgers Stadium, the book allows kids to put themselves in Charley’s shoes, consider what they love (whether that be baseball or something else) and understand that there’s a greater purpose behind loving something — similar to how Ann’s family’s love of baseball allowed them to build Kershaw’s Challenge. Ann’s beautiful words are accompanied by illustrated portraits based on the Kershaws and Higginbottoms family photos, making Bigger Than Me not only a positive message, but a gorgeous coffee table book as well.
Now, as Ann steps into her role as Hyer’s PTA president, everything she’s been working on has come to complement one another perfectly, and she’s looking forward to what the future holds.
“The beautiful thing is, everything I do is all woven together in a really special way: my work with Kershaw’s Challenge, the book, which is about baseball, and then conveniently, my theme for Hyer next year is ‘Home Run Hyer,’” she says. “So I’m excited to see those things grow together.”
Bigger Than Me can be found on Amazon and thebiggerthanmebook.com

MEGAN FLANAGAN FROM DALLAS STYLE MAVEN IS KEEPING MOMS STYLISH IN THE CARPOOL LINES THIS SCHOOL YEAR.
ARTICLE BY MEGAN FLANAGAN

1. Denim Update: A new school year is the perfect time to try an updated denim silhouette. Investing in a new pair of jeans is one of the easiest ways to up the cool factor in your wardrobe. My favorite brand is R13, founded in 2009 by former Ralph Lauren designer, Chris Leba. They are distressed with a looser fit. I love wearing R13 because they are super comfortable without looking sloppy. I’ve had some for 10 years; they look exactly the same as the day I bought them. I encourage my clients to think of dollars per wear in a pricier item like R13. Why not spend a little more money on something you wear all the time? Contact Liz at V.O.D. to view their latest collection. talk@vodboutique.com or email me Megan@dallasstylemaven.com
2. A Matching Set: Every day I hear from my clients that they want getting dressed to be easy yet feel elevated in their everyday outfits. I have found the answer

in one of my favorite additions to Highland Park Village – Simkhai. The Dallas boutique is only one of four in the world. Matching sets are so chic and can be styled multiple ways for those long days at work and in the car. Contact in store stylists (214)-713-0299
3. Sneaker Check. Kids shouldn’t be the only ones with new sneakers when the school year starts! Why shouldn’t their unpaid chauffeurs get some cool new kicks as well? To say I am obsessed with 33.9’s is an understatement. Not only are they the coolest and most comfortable sneakers I own, but they are designed by Dallas natives, Nicole Musselman and her son, Henry Boykin. They come in multiple colors, are available for men and women, and can be personalized. I promise if you try a pair, you will be as hooked! Contact marie@shopkoch.com2600 or shop339original.com*
4. Upgrade your Athleisure: Let’s face it. This is what we wear so much of the time as moms. Chances are that your

athleisure wear could use an upgrade. Why not embrace the sporty prep trend at the same time! I always head straight to Bandier for my coolest new workout and athleisure looks. No one serves it up better than Wilson in my new favorite shorts, top, and jacket. Whether you are on or off the courts, these sporty looks will take you anywhere! 5. Be Cool and Bejeweled: I met Margot of Margot Ferree Jewelry at one of her pop-up charm bar events at Market in Highland Park Village. A Texas-based brand, Margot puts her own funky spin on classic pieces. You can select 5 or more charms to go with one of her necklaces. People stop me every day and ask about mine. ARTICLE BY DAVID MUSCARI
“Alyssa is warm, downto-earth, and extremely perceptive and insightful.”

It’s difficult to watch television or listen to talk radio or contemporary podcasts without feeling a bit overwhelmed by the depth of mental health issues in society. While it may seem daunting at times, there are dedicated people in communities whose mission is to create positive change in communities.
Alyssa Williamson is a licensed professional counselor in Dallas who is helping her clients find success and build better lives through therapy.
Affable and usually the first to smile and laugh, Alyssa grew up in Knoxville, Tennessee in a tight-knit family where her parents emphasized the importance of communication skills in education. “To this day, I’m relatively comfortable with public speaking, and always enjoy being able to talk about mental health issues in the community,” she says.
After considering the ministry, Alyssa’s heart led her into child welfare for the first half of her career. “I’ve always wanted to
be where the need was the greatest,” she says. She got a master’s degree in counseling and Marriage and Family Therapy and spent time studying the treatment of eating disorders and childhood trauma. “I had recovered from an eating disorder myself,” which made her uniquely qualified to treat others.
Later, after starting her own family, Alyssa’s oldest son was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at 4 years old. It changed so much for her family. Ironically, the health crisis opened new doors in her life, as well as her practice. “Helping people recover from eating disorders has been my life’s work,” she says.
She opened her practice in 2021 with an intimate team of qualified therapists. Since then, Alyssa has added a dietitian, marriage and family therapists, and a social worker, and partnered with eating disorder specialized medical practices to ensure they treat the whole person and give them the best chance at a long and

lasting recovery. “In the beginning, we were small and not well known. But over time, the quality of clinicians who have chosen to work here has been my greatest source of pride.”
Alyssa’s professional colleagues routinely sing her praises.
“She is warm, down-to-earth, and extremely perceptive and insightful,” says Dr. Hannah, MD, a Dallas pediatrician about Alyssa.
“Alyssa immediately puts you at ease, and I found her approachability and straightforwardness to be completely refreshing. She possesses a true gift of working through complex problems and getting to the heart of an issue.”
“There is no topic or issue with which she isn’t willing to dive into, and life’s problems seem less intimidating when you have someone so dependable and non-judgmental willing to go there with you. I couldn’t trust anyone more and highly recommend working with her.”
While her practice, Embodied Counseling, treats boys and men, she specializes in creating a safe place for women and girls, especially teens and young adults. As to her geographic concentration, Alyssa’s practice is convenient and accessible to the teens and young adults in the Park Cities. “A significant portion of our clients are from the Dallas private schools, as well as SMU. We recently opened our office in Uptown to better serve the community in that area.”
Recent data indicates that 90% of the effectiveness of any therapy is rooted in the strength of the connection between the therapist and the client. “Nothing can replace a real person with a genuine reaction to a patient’s story,” she says. “And as the world becomes increasingly automated, that human connection will be needed more than ever,” she says.
Alyssa and her staff are famously community-minded, and enthusiastic about a series of initiatives in progress, including the new office. “We are (also) working closely with Girls to Women Health and Wellness and Young Men’s Health and Wellness to provide the absolute highest quality of care possible.”
Dr. Susan Sugerman interacts with Alyssa at the Dallas clinic. “She very quickly gets to the heart of the matter while also building trust and avoiding shame. My patients love her and that always makes my job easier.”
Another of Alyssa’s recent initiatives is Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy, a treatment she calls “a lifesaving intervention” that may help longtime sufferers find relief for the first time.
Alyssa says she is excited about the future. “We’ve gone from two to 9 clinicians in under three years. We started in Plano, we now have offices in Dallas, Uptown, and Fort Worth.”
She’s intent on building a system where anyone seeking help can rapidly access education and resources, and Embodied Counseling to bring care to where people are, rather than ripping them out of their surroundings.
“We will continue filling the gaps in outpatient eating disorder care with educational workshops for clients and loved ones, groups for our clients and their families, and offering in-home concierge services.
Ultimately, we’re just eager to continue walking alongside people’s recovery and being able to help them find joy.”
Alyssa says success means living within her values with integrity.
“For me, at the end of my life, I want to have acted with compassion, built community, and been a force for restoration in my own and other people’s lives.”

Many of us know children and families impacted by childhood cancer. Medical personnel work hard to cure their patients, but families need more help just to get them through so many difficult circumstances surrounding the illness.
That’s where Leia’s Kids Foundation comes in, a Dallas nonprofit founded in 2017 by 22-year-old Leia Hunt. The two-time cancer survivor who knows the pain and uncertainty of childhood cancer endured 26 surgical procedures and lost an eye due to cancer.
PCL connected with Leia to learn how the foundation she established provides support to families navigating childhood cancer.
PCL: DESCRIBE LEIA’S KIDS.
LH: We’re dedicated to supporting families through their battle against childhood cancer, bringing them hope and joy. We honor each child and their family through a Crown-A-Kid party, a time to

celebrate and encourage the child and family during the biggest battle of their lives. Each child receives a $1000 donation from the Foundation to cover surprise costs such as unexpected travel or childcare. Together, we make a difference in the lives of these brave children and their loved ones.
PCL: WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS?
LH: To create a personal relationship with each family, pay close attention to siblings, and provide inspiration while giving parents hope.
PCL: YOU’RE LIKE BOOTS ON THE GROUND ASSISTANCE FOR FAMILIES?
LH: No parent should have to choose between going to work to pay hospital bills or sitting at their child’s bedside. We aspire to inspire the mightiest warriors … and work to turn hope into help and give children facing pediatric cancer their childhood back.
PCL: TELL US ABOUT YOUR CHARITY’S HISTORY.

LH: When I heard that families needed money just to pay for the gas to get to chemo treatment, I realized that I should raise funds to give to the families. That is where Leia’s Kids began. I raise money and donate it to a child fighting cancer. I want the family to use it for anything they need: for an electric bill, parking garage costs, or gasoline. People need to know, that in their darkest hour, they are not alone. If we help the helpless, just a bit, it can make all the difference.
PCL: WHAT’S LEIA’S KIDS FOUNDATION’S OVERARCHING MISSION?
LH: It’s to provide hope and support. We walk with families because we understand what it’s like to have a child with cancer. Leia’s Kids focuses on the whole family … because cancer affects everyone.

Summertime is busy time, and that often means eating on the go. Whether you’re at constant baseball games or meeting up for a regular play date, you’re probably bringing food along with you to feed your crew. And there’s no meal that’s as on-the-go friendly as the peanut butter and jelly sandwich.
And don’t get me wrong — I love a PB&J. But months of eating anything can get a little old, and this summer, I started to wonder if there was a way to zhuzh up the ol’ standby.
I was actually inspired by a sandwich at one of my favorite places to eat. All the restaurant’s sandwiches feature cheese. So color me surprised when I found that they had a peanut butter and jelly sandwich on the menu — with the addition of sheep’s cheese. And cue more surprise when I discovered that it was absolutely delicious.
CHANGE UP YOUR PB&J GAME BY DISCOVERING NEW WAYS TO ENJOY THE OL’ STANDBY
ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY KATIE CURRID
All summer, I was craving this sandwich, a fresh PB&J sandwich on sourdough. I decided to try my own at home with what I had on hand, which was goat cheese. And it opened up a whole new world for me.
The PB&J with goat cheese started being my standard poolside sandwich this summer, and then I started talking to other people about it, spreading the gospel of the PB&J with cheese, and they would share their PB&J innovations with me. You could toast them! Put chips on them! Add bacon! The possibilities were endless.
The PB&J is so nostalgic and, yeah, sometimes, you just want a really basic one on white bread with grape jelly and creamy Jif like you had when you were a kid. But it’s also fun to be playful about it, which is nostalgic in its own way, too — being innovative and doing something a little weird or against the rules, just like when you were a kid.
Change up your bread: One easy way to liven up your sandwich is to use different bread. That sourdough you may have learned to make during the pandemic is a perfect bread to use, or you could opt for milk bread, a Japanese option that is fluffier and sweeter than white bread.
Get nutty: While most toddlers would balk at crunchy peanut butter, you’re an adult! You can try new things! If you don’t have the crunchy type on hand, you can also just add peanuts between your layers of peanut butter and jelly to get that crunchy fix.
Toast it: One of my favorite ways to make an “elevated” PB&J is to simply toast it. It’s really similar to grilled cheese — make your PB&J, and then spread some butter on the outside on both sides. Melt some butter in a pan and add your sandwich, flipping once browned. If you want to get really fancy, sprinkle some powdered sugar on before you cut into it. I promise it will be your new late-night craving.
New spreads: You probably already have a go-to jelly for your PB&J (mine is strawberry), but change it up a bit and try raspberry or apricot. Honey is a great addition, too! I’ve also heard ginger or lemon preserves are great, or you could try swapping the peanut butter out for something different nut butter, or even something worldly like tahini, which is a ground sesame seed paste with a similar flavor to peanut butter.
Fresh fruit: This is probably the simplest way to up your PB&J game, since technically, you’ve already got fruit on your sandwich in the form of jelly. Try adding some smashed raspberries or cut strawberries to yours next time you make one!

Add some spice: Putting some spice on your PB&J can add some interest. Sambal, an Indonesian chili paste, is a good option because it lends itself to sweetness, or Sriracha is an easy one since it’s a common fridge staple. I’m also a big fan of gochujang, a mildly spicy Korean paste with a hint of sweetness. It’s best to mix your spice in with your peanut butter before spreading it — it’ll remind you of satay!
Chip in: Probably the wackier idea you’ll see here, and one a toddler would either love or abhor, but chips on sandwiches are a great way to add crunchiness and saltiness to any sandwich — especially the PB&J. Apparently, Channing Tatum loves to eat Cheetos on his PB&J, though I’ve had others tell me they love to add Doritos — both the Nacho and Cool Ranch variety — to theirs, too.
Say cheese: As I said earlier, you’ve gotta try cheese on your PB&J. I’m a fan of goat cheese, specifically the honey variety, but plain versions or those with dried fruit are great, too. The trick is to set it out for 15-20 minutes before making your sandwich to soften it a bit, so it’s easier to spread on delicate bread.
It’s bacon!: Bacon lends itself well to peanut butter because it’s also both sweet and salty. If you’re opposed to adding straight-up strips of bacon to your sandwich, a bacon jam, which you can buy or make at home, is a good stepping stone to getting out of your comfort zone.
