LIFESTYLE LETTER

Support Local

February 2024 PUBLISHER

Rod Patten | rod.patten@citylifestyle.com E D I TO R

Christiana Stephens christiana.stephens@citylifestyle.com

When it comes to exploring my city, I am a huge proponent of all things local. I prefer local boutiques, coffee shops, and restaurants over chains any day—and will go out of my way to support local if I can. And in Dallas and the Park Cities, it seems like local spots open every week. There’s no shortage of new places to try, which is part of what makes living here fun. This issue is all about showing our local joints some love, whether it’s retail, charities, or places to grab a bite. It’s also about celebrating the people and small businesses who are doing great things in the community and who make it special. In these pages, we feature remarkable local places including bridal boutique Iconic Bride, run by James Brown and Jair Torres (page 12); All Occasions Florist, family-owned and run by Emily Robinson (page 20); Highland Park High School club 65 Roses, which works to benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (page 42); writer David Muscari’s top neighborhood picks (page 26); and local nonprofit KidLinks that’s putting on its annual Symphony of Chefs fundraiser (page 32). All of their stories are equally inspiring and motivating. As for my own story with the magazine, it’s bittersweet to say that this is my last issue editing Park Cities Lifestyle. I have loved bringing local stories to life each month and continually learning more about the people who make it home. And I look forward to seeing these stories continue on in the months to come.

VEILED IN LUXURY At Iconic Bride, owners James Brown and Jair Torres provide brides a personalized experience with exclusive dresses.

“Department stores don’t really understand bridal,” says James Brown, owner of luxury bridal boutique Iconic Bride in Dallas’ Design District, minutes away from the Park Cities. Brown and his husband, Jair Torres, opened their shop in September 2022, aiming to provide a personalized and high-end shopping experience they felt was missing in North Texas. “When it comes to buying [inventory], you have to go with your gut instincts, whereas department stores use spreadsheets to do their buys, so they are always just buying the same thing over and over. They don’t go and buy something new … I knew we could do better,” Brown says. In its first year, Iconic Bride has welcomed women from as far as London and Colombia, dressed the bride in the NBA’s first halftime wedding, built an Instagram following of more than 19,000, and more. Brown began his career in bridal as a manager and assistant buyer for Michigan-based boutique Roma Sposa Bridal Atelier. A year and a half into the position, he got an email from designer Rita Vinieris, offering him a job as her sales director—a post he has now held for more than 16 years. The idea for Iconic Bride came when Brown considered what he might do when Vinieris stops producing collections.

“I wouldn’t want to go work for somebody else,” he says. He continues to work for Vinieris, and Iconic Bride has become the f lagship location for her designs. Torres, who built a hair and makeup career in New York City, helps brides make a final purchasing decision by bringing their wedding vision to life through styling. “Jair usually comes in and puts [brides’] hair in an amazing updo or does their hair, and we ask them what

their makeup is going to be like—to help them really see that vision. A lot of other stores don’t have a background in hair and beauty,” says Brown. Torres is also behind the brand’s social media presence, an element that helped it launch at a running start. “We had so much interest, girls needed dresses before we were even open,” Brown says. “We literally were taking appointments out of our apartment … it’s been nonstop.” Iconic Bride sources from roughly 10 luxury bridal designers, including Vinieris, Leah Da Gloria, Verdin Bridal New York, and House of Savin. Soon, it will add dresses from Israeli designer Pnina Tornai, who has been prominently showcased inside Kleinfeld Bridal— Torres’ former employer and the venue behind TLC’s Say Yes to the Dress.

Eventually, he and Torres hope to expand Iconic Bride’s Dallas footprint—right now only four brides can be served at a time—and enter new markets after 2025. “We’re looking at Charlotte, North Carolina; New York City; or Los Angeles,” Brown says.

The celebrated French impressionist painter Claude Monet said it best: “I must have flowers, always and always.” The delicate beauty, captivating aromas, and vibrant hues of the flora that grace our gardens and transform our homes are among life’s most joyful pleasures. For more than 35 years, All Occasions Florist has been creating and supplying some of the most memorable floral designs and displays in Dallas. Located on Oak Lawn, the store is a favorite of Park Cities shoppers. “We pride ourselves on being family-owned and -operated, and building lasting relationships with our customers, whom we all consider family as well,” says Emily Robinson, who purchased the local landmark in 2014. Buying the business was a full-circle moment for the Dallas native. “The original owner sent my mom flowers on the day I was born. I felt so honored to be allowed the opportunity to take over such a wonderful company.” Nowadays, Robinson says clients routinely tell her: “I’ve been coming here since 1990 or for 10, 20, 30 years or more.” Most of the All Occasions Florist staff has been with Robinson since she purchased the popular shop. The longevity of the staff speaks volumes about the positive work environment and the strong bonds formed within the team. “One employee has been here for nearly as long as we’ve been open,” she says. “We cherish our customers, and we love being a small business, which

The shop is a classic small business with a big heart that cares deeply about every display. “We treat each order with the love and care it deserves,” Robinson says. The staff aspires to offer clients “long-lasting florals as well as long-lasting relationships, good customer relations, and honesty.” Over the years, f lorists sometimes utilize new materials, products, artistic elements, and design philosophies. “Trends and fads will come and go in the f lower world,” says Robinson. For her, it is all about choices and offering something for everyone, rather than being limited to a certain style or type of f lower. “If a customer wants something more contemporary with lots of novelty f lowers, we’ve got them covered,” she says. “Or maybe they’ve been shopping with us for 30 years and prefer more traditional

Satisfaction is guaranteed with arrangements from All Occasions Florist, which proudly stands behind its work. “We encourage our customers to let us know if they’re not pleased or the flowers didn’t hold up as long as they should so that we can make it right.” Robinson and her staff create weekly florals for homes, as well as large, lush arrangements. They are all thoughtful experts who place a special emphasis on customization, and they love “just being able to be creative with the florals, coming up with new designs, and seeing them sell.” All Occasions Florist | 3428 Oak Lawn Avenue 214.528.0898 | alloccasionsdallas.com

Dallas and the Park Cities have so many wonderfully unique, local things to see and do that, at times, the hardest part of deciding where to go is figuring out where to start. My wife, Amy, and I live “behind the pink wall,” a small strip of real estate situated between the Park Cities and Preston Hollow off Preston Road and Northwest Highway—and we’ve been here for many years. Many of our favorite restaurants, shops, and recreational opportunities are spread throughout the area, providing a never-ending array of cool things to do. And since the Park Cities is so walkable, we spend a lot of time outdoors enjoying the many green spaces. From performing arts spaces to eateries, there is no shortage of exciting things to sample. Here are some of our current local favorites, including tried-and-true standbys and one fabulous newbie.

In Dallas, shopping is a full-contact sport. Amy says that any quality local shopping spree starts with Highland Park Village, a luxurious local institution that dates back to the 1930s. The Spanish-influenced architecture is a remarkable work of art surrounded by gentle oak trees and distinctive aesthetic touches around every corner.

Culture is an important part of Park Cities life. Downtown’s 68-acre Arts District is the envy of cities across America. At the center of it all is the Meyerson Symphony Center. I.M. Pei designed the facility, which is home to the Dallas Symphony and is considered among the world’s finest venues for live music.

There are around 50 meticulously maintained parks scattered throughout the area. We love watching families gather for picnics and kids playing soccer or tossing a football around. We especially enjoy the small “pocket” parks, which are more intimate and perfect for people watching and relaxing in the sunny outdoors.

DIY VALENTINES

ARTS

ARTICLE BY CHERYL PARTON

1. Arts Create heart ornaments to hang on a Valentine’s Day tree. The ornaments can be used as clue cards for a Valentine's Day scavenger hunt. Participants find their picture on the tree and hunt for a hidden treasure.

2. Sweets A home-based holiday is made complete with a dessert table. Whether made from scratch or store bought, a collection of decorated confections is as beautiful as the treats are delectable to eat.

3. Sentiments Poetry is a most personal way to express your heart. No need to be intimidated by haiku, a short form of Japanese poetry. While there are several variations of the form, a traditional place to begin is with a seasonal word that divides 17 syllables into three lines of five/ seven/five. Simple and sweet.

The first Valentines were handmade in the 18th century, long before printing presses and mass-produced options. Today, handmade signifies the ultimate in personal mots d’amour. Enjoy these sweet projects as a couple, a family, or with friends.

ARTICLE BY SUE G. COLLINS

Reservations For Two Dreamy destinations for couples looking to get away.

Finding a life partner just might be easier than finding someone you can travel with. Pace, patience and priorities all matter when organizing itineraries, straddling time zones and navigating new places. Do you like languid mornings with room service, wide sandy beaches and white-glove service? Or, do you prefer watching the sunrise in hiking boots, launching into eye-opening excursions and digging to find that hidden gem of a restaurant that serves local food to locals? When the stars align, both partners have an affinity for generally the same kind of vacation, or are willing to compromise. Enjoying travel with your mate is the icing on the (wedding) cake. Here are a few ideas for fabulously romantic getaways. Bon Voyage!

Traveling can be as stressful as it is sublime. Exhausting as it is inspiring. Traveling as a couple requires additional planning and communication with a healthy dose of patience. Much like marriage! But, waking up in a faraway place, exploring unknown terrain together and leaving your routine and all its trappings behind can be therapeutic. You both can take on new roles and release tired habits.

1

Write new vows over lunch or take a random nap because you can.

2

Share planning and talk about your goals for the trip. Do you want to completely unplug or will one of you need excellent wifi to call into a few meetings?

3

If you’re parents, consider setting boundaries for texting and phone calls so you can put the phone away and immerse in one another. Let the kids know you will be checking your phone at a certain time each day (and stick to that). Let the grandparents or caregivers handle the day to day drama.

4

Take turns charting a course for the day. On day one, you check museum opening times, get the timed tickets and find a nearby spot for a healthy lunch. On day two, you sit back and let your partner call the Uber and source out the perfect shopping district, walking distance to a park. Enjoy the ride, either way.

Camille Summers

A C LU B fo r A C AUSE February is here, love is in the air, and the local 65 Roses club from Highland Park High School is gearing up for their annual rose drive. Students attending the high school can purchase roses with notes to be delivered to their friends during class on Valentine’s Day, all proceeds directly benefiting the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. We chatted with club president Camille Summers, who told us more about this beloved tradition for a good cause.

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THE CLUB? The purpose of 65 Roses is to raise money and awareness for cystic fibrosis. The backstory is that there was a cystic fibrosis patient who couldn’t pronounce it correctly—he’d say “65 roses” instead.

HOW DOES 65 ROSES SPREAD LOVE TO CHILDREN WITH CYSTIC FIBROSIS? We organize a stocking drive and a rose drive to raise money for Children’s Health Hospital and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. We hope it makes [patients] feel loved, knowing they have people they don’t even know wanting to help them out, working to help their cause.

HOW HAVE YOU SEEN THE ROSE DRIVE IMPACT STUDENTS AT HIGHLAND PARK HIGH SCHOOL? The roses get everyone in a Valentine’s, love-y mood. It’s people coming together to help cystic fibrosis while showing love to their friends, getting involved, and having fun. Some even send them to teachers to show their appreciation, which I think is really cute.

65 Roses is staffed by junior class girls who pass their positions down to rising juniors each year. In December, during the stocking drive, the club raised $16,800 in gift cards that were donated to patients battling cystic fibrosis. On average, the stocking drive raises between $8,000 and $12,000, and the rose drive raises between $2,000 and $3,000. More than 800 roses are sold and sent to students each year.
