The Most Wonderful Time of the Year You could say I come from a musical family. I took piano lessons from my grandmother from the age of 3 onward and sang in choirs up until college. My dad is a renowned concert pianist and teacher, and my sister is a supremely talented opera singer. Growing up, our house was constantly filled with music, but nothing quite compared to the month of December. Carols and holiday tunes echoed through rooms and hallways morning and night, urging me to “Deck the Halls” or “Go Tell It on the Mountain.” And I loved it. Hearing holiday music, whether in my own house or in a store or on the radio, instantly puts me in the Christmas spirit—and that hasn’t changed since I was a kid. There’s just something about the familiar songs we know and love that makes you feel at peace, even in an otherwise chaotic and busy season. I believe music can bring people together, and I don’t think that’s any truer than during the holidays. Dance, much like music, also brings people together, and The Dallas Conservatory does an exceptional job of uniting the community through the performing arts, especially around the holidays. In this issue, we highlight the work that Executive Director Jacqueline Porter is doing and all of the conservatory’s exciting offerings (page 20). Our December issue also features the best gifts for those who like to travel (page 16), winter tips for your pets from a Dallas vet (page 26), how to design for a small lot (page 42), and local high-end gift delivery service Afloat (page 32). Just like the season, we’ve packed the issue full of goodies. Down to a Fine Art The Dallas Conservatory, founded by Jacqueline Porter, is changing lives of all ages through dance and the arts.

Dancer and artist Jacqueline Porter moved from New York to Dallas in 2007 without knowing a soul. Today, her creation, The Dallas Conservatory, is the area’s most prestigious performing arts school on three campuses, the first of which is on Inwood Road. “It’s really something to celebrate,” says the conservatory’s founding artistic and executive director. “For a few years, we’ve been one of the largest private performing arts schools, not just in Dallas, but in the world. So many lives have been changed ... for students, parents, and employees. So many dreams have been born and come true.” The Frisco campus boasts students from around the globe and teachers from Europe, Canada, and South America. TDC’s Castle CONTINUED >

Hills/Lewisville campus, which opened in 2022, is also booming, “populated by happy families and two large competitive teams,” Porter says. TDC hosts 2,500 students, including almost 1,000 “drop-in” adults annually, with 90 employees. Top dance professionals, like George Birkadze and Ashley Ellis, have relocated to Dallas to teach at TDC. “And to think, it all started above City Cafe on Lovers Lane in a tiny studio,” says Porter. Much of TDC’s success is rooted in its diverse offerings—and the quality of each class in all styles of dance: ballet, jazz, tap, contemporary, modern, ballroom, break dancing, Broadway, and hip-hop. “We’re strong in acrobatics and fitness at all campuses, with classes including Broadway Fit, Ballet Barre, Pilates, and Yoga. We offer private piano in Frisco, plus singing and acting classes with performance opportunities at all campuses.” TDC alumni dot the landscape. Sixteen alums are at top companies including Pacific Northwest, Houston, Washington, Colorado, Los Angeles, and Cincinnati ballet companies, as well as modern companies Parsons, Mark Morris, and Les Ballet

Jazz de Montreal. One of TDC’s top dancers, Rachel Rohrich, danced for three years professionally at The Washington Ballet, then recently retired at 22 to pursue a career in medicine like her parents, a pair of Dallas physicians. TDC performances happen on a regular basis. Dancers are scheduled to present excerpts from The Nutcracker on December 3 at NorthPark for a Children’s Health fundraiser. They’re also scheduled to present Swan Lake next spring in the Arts District. “I love creating dancers and opportunities for as many dancers and dance educators as I can,” says Porter. “I’d love all the guys out there who’d like to try a class to know that we have lots of boys and men studying at TDC,” she says. “We have over a dozen male professional dancers on faculty who are amazing role models.” But her vision doesn’t end there. “Everyone is invited to study with us, no matter your level,” she says. “Dance can change your life. After my professional dance career, I wanted to make a difference somewhere—Dallas has been a dream for a dance entrepreneur.”

Christmas and the holidays can be extra special spent with your pets, but this joyful season can also bring added stress to your dog or cat—and a list of things for you to remember while juggling the demands of holiday plans, gatherings, and travel. You might have to take your pet somewhere new, buy them cold-weather gear, or make sure they don’t get into Christmas treats. With extra factors to consider, this can lead to greater anxiety for both you and your pet. Luckily, Dr. Ashley Warren Priddy can help. Dr. Priddy is the medical director and owner of Dallas Veterinary Clinic on Sherry Lane, one of the oldest vets in Dallas. It was originally founded in 1954 on Cedar Springs, and Priddy purchased the clinic in 2016 when it was located off Walnut Hill. It then moved to its current location in Preston Center—in the heart of the Park Cities. “I went to Highland Park,” Priddy says. “I grew up in Highland Park. So it was good to move back to where I grew up.” Having been a veterinarian for a decade, Dr. Priddy has helped many animals and their owners through various seasons of life. “Obviously every vet loves animals,” he says. “That’s why they get into it. I’ve always loved animals and I think once I found out
you could be a doctor, but just for creatures, I thought that was pretty cool. It’s like being an investigator, solving problems and fixing things. Pets are family members, so seeing these people and building relationships with them is an added advantage.” Dr. Priddy and his team at Dallas Vet Clinic care for up to 2,000 pets, the majority of which are dogs and cats. When animals are sick, it tends to be ear or skin issues or gastrointestinal trouble. But the holiday season can add new external factors that may warrant some extra planning. The first thing to consider is providing stability for your pet during a time when their routine might look a little different. You might be preparing to go on a trip with or without them or to host friends and family in your home. “See if they’ve got a special place they can go hide at home if they need to,” Priddy says. “And if they’ve got to go anywhere on car rides or airplane rides, depending on the situation, we sometimes send home some pharmaceuticals to calm them,

something to keep them happier and calmer for certain parties. For dogs and cats, there are pheromone diffusers and sprays, a synthetic pheromone that is natural to the dog or cat that calms them. If your relatives are bringing their own pets into your home, just keep an eye on them and make sure that all the creatures are happy together.” Another change the holidays can bring is colder weather. Even in Dallas, temperatures can reach freezing, and the ground can get cold or icy. If you have a dog, it’s a good idea to purchase booties and a coat for them if you plan to go on longer walks. Booties not only keep their paws warm but also keep salt off them if the city has put down salt to melt ice. According to Dr. Priddy, canine paws aren’t as susceptible to cold as human hands, but there can still be damage with long enough exposure. Festive food can be one of the best parts of the holidays, but it can also cause health issues for your pets if they are left unsupervised next to a sugary pie or a turkey containing bones. Aside from the obvious foods you normally avoid giving dogs, like chocolate and grapes, it’s a good idea to keep fatty, rich foods out of their reach. And if your pet does get into food or desserts that they shouldn’t, it’s best to take them to the vet. You can even call on the way to alert staff that you’re coming and will need immediate assistance. “There was a client the other day who talked about last year when the whole family came over,” he says. “While they were setting everything up, this dog managed to jump on the dining room table and devoured the entire butter plate for the rolls. Sure enough, that dog was pretty sick everywhere. They took the dog to the vet thankfully.” Dogs and cats can also be tempted to get into shiny ornaments and decorations, so it’s best to keep an eye on them around boxes and trees so you and your pet can enjoy the scenery. Spending time with and caring for your beloved pets can make the holiday season that much brighter. They are part of the family, after all. “We’re focused on family,” Priddy says, “and trying to keep them comfortable and happy.”

1. IF YOU ARE WORKING WITH A CLIENT WHO HAS A SMALL LOT, WHERE DO YOU START CONCEPTING OUTDOOR DESIGN? We start by asking the client a lot of questions to get a feel for how they envision using the space. It is very important for us to know early on how they want to live, work, and play outdoors. From there, we discuss elements that will contribute to the overall design and function of the space: outdoor kitchen, shade, fountain, fire feature, landscaping, etc. Space planning is a critical part of the early schematic design phase; incorporating key elements, along with furniture layout, is important to ensure the space functions as intended.
2. HOW DOES DESIGN FOR A SMALL LOT DIFFER FROM DESIGN FOR A LARGER LOT? There is not a lot of difference in the design process or questions asked to the client. For the larger lots, we spend a lot of time making sure the scale of the outdoor living spaces is congruent with the scale of the lot/house. With smaller properties, we emphasize efficiency in our design—we want the space to function and be beautiful while not overwhelming the space with too many features. There is elegance in simplicity when the details are constructed properly. Regardless of whether the lot is large or small, we want the space to work for a small, intimate family gathering, or a large party.
3. WHAT ARE THE MAIN THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN DESIGNING FOR A SMALL LOT? Maximizing every square foot within the space. We creatively define spaces and create points of interest that draw focus away from the size of the space and toward the features. Oftentimes, we focus on a design solution that blurs the line between interior and exterior environments so that the smaller outdoor space feels like an extension of the home.
4. WHAT ARE SOME INDICATORS OF SUCCESS FOR A SMALL LOT THAT YOU’VE DESIGNED? We love when clients tell us the space is perfect for their family to relax in but also when they have large groups of people over too. That is our goal with each space we design—beautiful and functional, no matter the amount of people.

3 | Use Multi-Purpose Concrete Fixtures In limited space, each element should serve multiple functions. Consider using concrete for features like built-in seating with hidden storage, dual-purpose retaining walls, or integrated planters that also act as privacy screens.
4 | Incorporate Concrete Pavers for Visual Interest
Concrete pavers are an excellent way to add texture and visual interest to smaller spaces. They could be utilized for pathways, driveways, or even decorative accents to creak up larger concrete areas.
