LIFESTYLE LETTER

On Gratitude

November 2023 PUBLISHER

Rod Patten | rod.patten@citylifestyle.com EDITOR

I recently read an article about the psychology of gratitude. We tend to think of gratitude as an ephemeral feeling, an emotion we experience when something good happens in our lives or when we are gathering to reflect with family during the holidays. But in reality, gratitude is a practice that can be cultivated and honed—and that can actually affect our brains long-term regardless of our current circumstances. In the study mentioned in the article, two psychologists compared one group who wrote down things they were grateful for daily over the course of several weeks with another group who did not. At the end of that period, the first group felt better about their lives, had calmer nervous systems, exercised more, and saw their doctors less. This study, as well as others that have been conducted on gratitude, seem to show that a consistent gratitude practice leads to an overall improvement in happiness and quality of life for the individual. This sounds great, but it can be harder to implement in everyday life, especially during times of stress or hardship. So what are some small ways we can practice gratitude that can make a big impact on our lives down the road? We can keep a gratitude journal, write more thank-you notes, set aside a few minutes at the same time every day to count our blessings, or practice gratitude in meditation, among others. Taking the time to practice one or more of these things can lead to more joy and happiness in all seasons, not just during the Thanksgiving month. I, for one, intend to incorporate gratitude more into my life and am excited to see how it changes my outlook. And I want to start with this issue. I am grateful for Park Cities Lifestyle bringing the stories of exceptional and deserving people, businesses, and organizations to life. In this issue, you’ll read about how to gather well with family when you travel (page 36), the exciting USA Pickleball National Championships in Dallas (page 16), de Boulle Diamond & Jewelry’s lasting legacy (page 20), the talented work of masonry restoration company Brick Restoration, Inc. (page 26), and Dallas 24 Hour Club’s hospitable Thanksgiving-day celebration (page 30). I am grateful for all the writers who contributed to this issue and for our amazing publishers who continue to make each new issue possible. When I take a step back and think about all I have to be thankful for in this season, “grateful” doesn’t begin to cut it.

ARTICLE BY DAVID MUSCARI

Pickleball is America’s fastest-growing racket sport—and its biggest stage is headed to Dallas this month for the USA Pickleball National Championships. Last year, USA Pickleball and the Carvana Professional Pickleball Association announced that the 2023 National Championships would move from California to Brookhaven Country Club in the Dallas area. In a region with the full complement of professional teams, the pickleball championships are a savvy fit. The Sports Business Journal recently named Dallas the top American city for sports business, beating out markets like New York City, Minneapolis, Atlanta, and Los Angeles. As the world’s largest pickleball tournament in history, the National Championships represent a new feather in Dallas’ sports cap with an estimated economic impact of $10 million, according to the Dallas Sports Commission. Organizers expect 3,500 or more amateur and professional competitors, a 50% jump over last year’s championships in California. Participants will vie for the largest purse in tournament history, in front of an estimated 25,000 fans, up from 5,552 last year. “We plan to host an unparalleled fan experience for those who aren’t playing in the event themselves,” says Melissa Zhang of USA Pickleball. Brookhaven has been investing in plenty of upgrades, which include designating the street beyond its front door as “Pickleball Boulevard.” The club is building a $5 million pickleball center and will accommodate up to 65 courts for the tournament. Brookhaven is also creating spaces for nightly live music and interactive events, as well as family-friendly activities. Vendors from all over Texas will be on-site as part of “Taste of Pickle” to help make fans and players feel like they’re at the Super Bowl of pickleball, in a market used to large-scale sporting events. Brookhaven’s commitment was a key factor in bringing the “crown jewel” of the sport to Dallas, said USA Pickleball board chair Robert Quicksilver. “We look forward to seeing how these renovations and upgrades will further elevate this year’s player and fan experience,” he says. The sport of pickleball was reportedly invented in the 1960s near Seattle by a group of dads eager to relieve their children’s summer doldrums. Over time, pickleball has evolved with better gear and a more well-defined rulebook for the sport that feels like one part tennis, one part badminton, and one part ping-pong. Simple and accessible, the game is played outdoors and indoors on surfaces with the same measurements

as a badminton doubles court. Players use paddles and perforated plastic balls similar to old-school Wiffle balls. Naturally, it has taken off in Texas, with Plano ranking among the top 10 U.S. cities for number of courts, and significant growth in the Park Cities. Stan Keith, a retired Park Cities resident and somewhat of a pickleball rookie, has played for several months with a group at Royal Oaks Country Club in Dallas. “The competitive juices always seem to come out and we forget we’re not 21 anymore,” Keith says. Tammy Saunders is a registered nurse in Dallas. An avid marathoner in a family filled with athletes, she played for the first time with her kids and friends at Grapevine’s Chicken N Pickle. “It can be for fun or as an aggressive sport,” she says. The multigenerational sport’s popularity in the Park Cities and DFW continues, and the National Championships this month will only serve to boost pickleball’s escalating growth curve. November 6-12, usapickleball.org

There is controversy over the origin of the name “pickleball.” Some say it was named after a family dog, Pickles; others insist it came from the term “pickle boat” in rowing.

Emma and Nick Boulle

In the early 1980s, Denis Boulle was delivering diamonds when a customer stopped him with a suggestion. Boulle, a native of England, was working in Dallas for another retailer at the time. But the gentleman was certain Boulle, personable as they come, should open his own shop. He even offered to fund the venture. The jewelry business isn’t what you might call a low-capital endeavor. The rest, as they say, is history. Boulle opened his shop in 1983 and earned enough to pay off his partner in less than a year. Forty years later, de Boulle Diamond & Jewelry stands as a testament to time and luxury in the heart of the Park Cities. It’s also a testament to family—Denis and his wife, Karen, have been in it together from the start. Their two kids now play key roles, as well. Emma Boulle works with Karen to design pieces, helping de Boulle appeal to younger clients. After starting his own digital marketing firm fresh out of college at SMU, Nick Boulle returned to the business in 2015. He now serves as

Nick Boulle

its president, splitting his time between Dallas and the Houston location the family opened in 2015. “People ask, do you live in Dallas or Houston?” Nick says. “I say, ‘yes.’” He spends so much time south because, at its core, de Boulle has always been a business that is part of its community, entwined with the lives of the people it serves. “The interactions we have with every person that comes in are very happy— someone is celebrating a milestone in their life, in a relationship, in their career,” he says. “We’re lucky that a lot of our customers become very good friends. … We’re enjoying what we’re doing, and I think that rubs off; it becomes infectious. People will stop by just to have a coffee.” In addition to its own line of jewelry, de Boulle helps customers go “mind to finger” with a range of gemstones, diamonds, engagement rings, and other custom pieces from their team of in-house jewelers. They’re an authorized retailer for several top luxury brands, including

Patek Phillipe, Tudor, and Rolex. They buy, sell, trade, and consign estate jewelry, preowned watches, and vintage timepieces. The company even offers corporate sales for businesses looking to impress top employees or clients. The pieces come in all shapes and sizes. De Boulle has sold jewelry for a couple thousand dollars up to, for a few rare gemstones, as much as $10 million. They will occasionally buy and hold fancy-colored diamonds not only as beautiful, rare items, but because they believe in them as a storage of wealth. As of late, more and more customers have been interested in that market, Nick says. “Having our building and our environment here allows us to offer that huge range,” he says. “Someone can start with us with a $1,000 ring, and kind of work all the way up to whatever they want.” The business has been through many locations and a few ups and downs along the way. It started in Snider Plaza in 1983.

The Boulles

LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | SHOPPI NG

“We’re lucky that a lot of our customers become very good friends. … We’re enjoying what we’re doing, and I think that rubs off; it becomes infectious. People will stop by just to have a coffee.” - NICK BOULLE

The Boulles moved from there to a building on Preston Road, a spot tiny enough that the workshop and offices were shoved into the attic. Then, in 2000, the Boulles made another move, this one to the two-story, 13,600-squarefoot perch it calls home today. That one happened just as the dot-com bubble and 9/11 were spinning the world into recession. “It was an extremely stressful time,” Nick says. Through it all, the Boulle family has remained as close as ever. “Certainly we’re not perfect, there are always differences of opinion and everyone has their own stresses in life,” he says. “But we’re very lucky. We get along really well. Even when I’m not working, I’ll go spend time with them on a Sunday.” And all four remain intrinsically tied into the day-to-day operations. Denis is at the store almost every day. “He’s still super involved,” Nick says. “He loves it. We kind of do it together, and I joke that I’m the legs because I’m always bouncing back and forth, hopping on a flight to wherever I need to go.” With the back-and-forth travel, would they ever consider opening a third location? Perhaps a fourth? “I’m always looking for opportunities,” says Nick. “But we want the right opportunities. We don’t want to just open for the sake of opening in a smaller market. We’d rather have a large footprint in major markets.” Boulle may take to the skies for his business travel, but outside of his day job, he prefers

the track. Nick drives for de Boulle motorsports, each year taking on a couple of professional endurance races, which range from 6 to 24 hours long. It’s a natural fit; the worlds of motorsports and luxury watches have been linked for years. In 2017, Boulle won the most prestigious endurance race in North America, the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona, receiving, ironically, a Rolex watch as reward. He narrowly missed another. “If something hadn’t gone wrong, I would have a second Rolex on my wrist,” he says. Of course, if his wrist is ever lonely, Boulle has options. “Doesn’t mean the same as if they give it to you,” he says. As for his day job, Nick sees a few trends driving the business in the future. One, he’ll be looking to leverage digital marketing to drive more online sales. But two, he’s cognizant that the company’s core, in-person customer increasingly seeks an above-and-beyond experience. De Boulle has planted race cars inside their Dallas shop floor (despite best efforts, they couldn’t get them to fit in Houston). “Clothing brands and others that have had a simpler appeal—they’ve transitioned to being predominately online,” he says. “So, everybody has to kind of know their consumer and pay attention.” And for the Boulles, that means continuing to cultivate real relationships with their surrounding communities. “The company doesn’t work with us out living somewhere else,” he says. “So, we’re right here.”

Brick by Brick CRACKED OR DAMAGED MASONRY CAN CREATE AN EYESORE FOR YOUR HOME—BUT BRICK RESTORATION HAS THE TOOLS TO NOT ONLY FIX YOUR HOUSE, BUT RESTORE IT TO ITS ORIGINAL BEAUTY.

26

C UR B A P P E A L | HOM E + DE S I GN

As your home ages, its façade will also age. Brick walls and stucco can begin to show cracks, and leaks can occur, among other issues brought on by the elements. But even with unpredictable Texas weather, you don’t have to settle for unsightly cracks or mismatched mortar. Masonry restoration company Brick Restoration, Inc. has been repairing homes for 30 years in Houston and two in Dallas—and has proven that they can take on even the toughest projects and make them good as new. We talked with president Betty Mooney about the keys to Brick Restoration’s success.

After (see next page)

HOW WAS BRICK RESTORATION BORN? My father, Roberto Zumeta, started Brick Restoration out of our garage in 1993 in Houston. Back then, the standard masonry repairs left homes with an ugly patch job or scars from cracks in the brick and mortar. He saw the need in our own neighborhood and around our community for a brick repair service that didn’t just repair the brick but also made it blend into the original look of the home. That’s where we got our tagline: “We restore to original beauty.” He’s always been an inventor at heart, so he invented some proprietary products and did some different things with masonry materials. I’ve been running the company for the past eight years, and we always dreamed about expanding to Dallas, which we finally did in 2021.

WHAT SERVICES DOES BRICK RESTORATION OFFER? We provide seamless repairs for all types of masonry— brick, stone, and stucco. We help homeowners, property

managers, and HOAs repair and enhance their biggest assets. Homeowners often call us because they have cracks and damaged brick on their homes, leaning columns, or leaking chimneys, and sometimes their home is simply lacking some curb appeal. Property managers and board members often need help with repairing their neighborhood monument signs or a brick perimeter fence. For all these problems, we have ways of restoring, enhancing, and maintaining the beauty of masonry. One of our most popular services with homeowners is our Brick Deco Wash, which is a masonry coating we apply over the brick or stone that completely transforms the look of the home. The application techniques include White Wash, German Smear, and Slurry, and they can be applied in a range of colors. Another exciting service for HOAs and residents is our Brick Perimeter Fence Program. This is our method of repairing, rather than replacing, the brick fences that often surround high-end communities in Texas. CONTINUED >

WHY IS HAVING GOOD MASONRY WORK ON YOUR HOUSE SO IMPORTANT? The brick, stone, or stucco on your home is the first line of defense for protecting it against the elements—especially water. Water is the biggest enemy of any home, and ensuring your masonry is free of cracks that could cause leaks is critical if you want to prevent more costly damage later. The masonry walls, columns, and other features around your home also provide protection and curb appeal, and keeping those in good shape enhances the value and beauty of your property.

WHAT IS ONE SURPRISING ELEMENT OF MASONRY RESTORATION? Most people don’t know there are simple repairs that can be done to brick. They usually think that damaged or cracked brick is something they have to live with or that they have to completely replace. I had a customer in Carrollton, and one side of their home had two or three cracks from the roof line all the way down to the foundation. All they needed was for us to come in and install some fasteners. We were able to refasten the wall to the framing of the house because it had come loose. We were able to then repair the cracks, and it cost them a fraction of what it would have cost to demolish and rebuild. Before (see previous page)

WHAT SETS BRICK RESTORATION APART FROM OTHER COMPANIES SERVING DFW AND THE PARK CITIES? We live by three brand promises. First, every customer gets a five-star service experience regardless of the size of their job. Next, we promise clarity and accuracy in price and scope. Finally, we promise an undetectable repair at a glance. I let customers know it is possible that if you know exactly where a repair was done, you might be able to pick it out. But anyone walking by or up to your home will never be able to tell work was done there. Our mission is to improve properties and improve lives—the lives of our customers, our employees, and our partners. Our specially trained technicians are not just masons; they are true artisans.

Give Thanks at Dallas 24 Hour Club Full of gratitude and fellowship, Thanksgiving at nonprofit Dallas 24 Hour Club goes beyond just a feast. Volunteers lining up with holiday food, the kitchen crew setting up a nearly bottomless buffet, the facilities coordinator frying turkeys on the back porch—this is how Thanksgiving Day starts at Dallas 24 Hour Club. “Our Thanksgiving celebration reinforces that The 24 is truly a family for [its] residents, alumni, and community members,” former CEO Marsha Williamson says. “We are home for those who until recently didn’t have a home.” Founded by Lee Tillman in 1969 and expanded by Williamson in 2018, The 24 provides a safe space for recovering addicts to live, work, and grow. Its 75-bed home, open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, offers hot showers, fresh clothes, food for the first

30 days, toiletries, linens, and, most importantly, a family environment for residents. “A lot of people come to The 24 broken with strained family relationships,” 24 alum and Tillman House Men’s Liaison Bobby D. says. “Early on in recovery, it’s important for people to feel like they have family and connections with others. The 24 provides that through holiday celebrations like Thanksgiving Dinner.” Beyond the community of supporters, alumni, staff, and residents that come together for The 24’s Thanksgiving, the event also offers an opportunity for residents to reconnect with their family members in a safe space, according to former resident and new CEO Tim Grigsby.

“A lot of times we’re not ready to be back in the same household, but it really can work wonders to dip your toe in the pond of getting back together with family by having them down here to The 24 on a holiday,” Grigsby says. “I can remember not being welcome at my family’s house when I lived at the 24 Hour Club, but we would get together for Thanksgiving at The 24,” Grigsby says. For many recovering addicts, the holidays can be an especially difficult time— they might not be able to see their family or it might be a time when they’d traditionally use. The cure for this, according to Grigsby, is service work. About a decade before becoming the CEO in September

2023, he spent the night before his first Thanksgiving at The 24 as a resident volunteering in the kitchen. “I cut up 16 of the biggest turkeys I’d ever seen from 9:15 p.m. until 3 o’clock in the morning, and I was so happy,” Grigsby says. From surrounding residents with a sense of community and purpose to bringing families closer, Thanksgiving at The 24 is so much more than a turkey feast—it’s a showering of love and support for residents who haven’t always had that. “There’s not a lot of smiles, there’s not a lot of laughs, there’s not a lot of fellowship, and there’s not a lot of friends when we’re homeless and in our addiction,” Grigsby says. “Thanksgiving is the exact opposite of that. It’s friends, it’s family, it’s food. It’s laughter and smiling. Our residents don’t take that stuff for granted because they’ve been without.” Volunteers can sign up to bring food or serve on Thanksgiving at dallas24hourclub.com.

how we can gather when we travel Opal&Finch can help you come together with friends and family when you travel for the holidays. ARTICLE BY MARTHA DAY | PHOTOG R APHY BY TE D TURNE R RE SE RVE S, TH E RE SORT AT PAWS UP, AND VILL A S OF DISTINC TION

Martha Day, Opal&Finch Founder

One of my favorite quotes is: “The most beautiful things in life are not things. They are people and places, memories, and pictures. They are feelings and moments, and smiles and laughter.” If there is one word to describe this coming season, it would be “connection.” The reason we drive across town or roll our suitcase through the airport is to connect again with those we love, both family and friends. There is delight in being with people who have known us through thick and thin and yet still love us, and it is worth the travel to feel that sense of ease. But as families and friends spread out across the world, it is a greater challenge to figure out where and how to come together. Opal&Finch, a Dallasbased boutique travel company, helps to sort out these types of details. I founded Opal&Finch in 2018 to inspire connection through travel, and I work with clients to find creative ways to build memories that will be stories told for years to come. Here are three locations Opal&Finch recommends to consider as you gather with your family this season. opalandfinch.com

Ted Turner Reserves In northern New Mexico, there exists a place where the magic of nature can be seen in all its wonder. It’s called Vermejo, part of Ted Turner Reserves. Here, under snow-capped mountains, families can gather to be together in one of the well-appointed cottages or private residences. Regardless of time of year, there’s time to try fly-fishing, perhaps ride out on a horse, or simply relax with some yoga or a massage at the Armendaris Spa. Of course, if there’s snow, some snow shoeing up the trails is a must-do. Create memories at the holidays that are magical in this uniquely restored native ecosystem created to preserve this natural habitat for generations to come. A stay here means that no one needs to be the host—everyone is a guest. tedturnerreserves.com

The Resort at Paws Up® The Resort at PawsUp® refers to themselves as the “crossroads of incomparable luxury and unspoiled wilderness”—and they aren’t wrong. Nestled along the Blackfoot River outside Missoula, this 37,000-acre working cattle ranch is a great place for a family to come together any time of the year. Whether gathering together in a Wilderness Estate, the historic Morris Ranch House, or any of the other 27 private homes on this ranch, this place provides opportunity to build lasting memories together. In a wintry wonderland, this cattle outfit switches from cows and bison to winter sports. Take time to go dog sledding or moon-biking; you can learn how to curl, shoot, or play cow croquet. At the end of the day, the tales told around the campfire and smores will be surrounded by laughter and smiles. pawsup.com

Villas of Distinction When we decide to gather together someplace new, finding a place that feels familiar adds to the ease of being away from how we’ve done holidays in the past. With a portfolio of carefully curated private residences, Villas of Distinction sets the bar high for providing that home-away-from-home feel. These are properties that are not on the regular market and are inspected in person to ensure they are up to the task of hosting groups. Whether it’s in Tuscany, Barbados, or Colorado, the ease and convenience of securing a private villa or residence big enough to hold everyone in one place simplifies the decision to do something new. The dedicated concierge team can arrange for a chef to cook, for the delivery of groceries, or for coordinated activities on property. villasofdistinction.com
