We went to press on this issue a few days before the Fourth of July. As I wrote this letter, I wondered how the first half of summer, pre-fireworks, might compare to the second half, when this issue comes out. We’ve already hit triple digits, so stretches of 100-plus-degree days will surely offer familiarity. Post-COVID, this also feels like the return of a real summer, with blockbuster movies, busy travel plans, and packed sporting events and music festivals—something we most certainly hope continues. But what might look different? Well, this is our Kids & Pets Issue, and in it I think lies the answer to that question. What about our children and our furry friends is changing? All it takes is that first back-to-school event to realize how much someone has grown over the summer—whether that’s physically or not. (And my dog goes to plenty of doggie playdates throughout the year, so this applies to pets as well!) Consider that as you read our feature on local animal rescue organizations as well as profiles on The Dallas Conservatory, a private performing arts school; HeadFirst Counseling, a boutique child and adolescent therapy center; and Dondolo, a luxury children’s clothing brand that gives back. Here at Park Cities Lifestyle, we wanted to offer parents and pet owners a closer look at some of the people and places that come in handy as some of these changes take place. Peruse these resources and maybe even put some of this information to good use. And then, as a reward, enjoy our roundup of the best frozen treats in town—a summertime delight that never changes for kids, pets, and adults alike.

THE DALLAS CONSERVATORY OFFERS WORLD-CLASS TRAINING IN MUSIC, THEATER, DANCE, FILM, ART, WRITING, AND MORE.

to travel and compete internationally. The curriculum is deeper than any public high school, including everything from ballet, jazz, and contemporary to voice, acting, high-performance mindset coaching, private classes, coaching, and more.

PCL: WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN YOUR TWO CAMPUSES? JP: After 11 years in Dallas, we opened Frisco in 2019 where we offer the same breadth of classes for all ages. We’ve added outstanding music instruction, housing, academics, and our new Professional programs in both classical and commercial.

PCL: IF SOMEONE WALKED THROUGH YOUR FACILITIES, WHAT MIGHT SURPRISE THEM? JP: Lots of males! About 50 percent of our faculty is male. We have men studying in nearly every class. With the advent of the TV dance shows, boys and men are more interested than ever. We promote training for strength and athleticism. We want men strong and expressive in equal parts.

PCL: WHERE ARE YOUR ALUMNI WORKING? JP: We have dancers and choreographers working at top companies such as the Washington and Houston Ballets, and Les Ballets Jazz de Montreal. Our graduates also work on stage and in film, television, and modeling.

PCL: WHAT ABOUT FACULTY CREDENTIALS? Executive Artistic Director Jacqueline Porter

The Dallas Conservatory is a private performing arts school, presenting elite instruction and classes taught in immersive environments with skilled faculty. We sat down with Executive Artistic Director Jacqueline Porter to learn more.

PARK CITIES LIFESTYLE: DESCRIBE TDC’S MISSION. JACQUELINE PORTER: Dance, theater, and voice training for all ages of students. We also present professional caliber productions at top local venues.

JP: Our ballet staff includes globally renowned ballerinas and two directors who trained in Russia's celebrated schools and danced internationally. We have an instructor who trained at London's Royal Ballet School and danced in The Phantom of the Opera in London’s West End. Others are from top American dance companies and Hollywood. I’m classically trained and worked for years on Broadway. We also have a steady stream of Dallas Symphony professionals who instruct music students.

PCL: WHAT IS TDC’S GREATEST ACHIEVEMENT?

JP: No. However, when students are ready, they may audition for our Pre-Professional programs. We accept roughly 25 percent.

JP: Making everyone feel welcome ... discovering talents that may have gone unnoticed before enrollment. Creating a home for all students of all ages, sizes, and ethnicity. We’ve taught thousands of people to dance recreationally since 2008 – we produce more than the high-achieving graduates!

PCL: HOW MANY STUDENTS ARE ENROLLED?

PCL: AND THE FUTURE OF TDC?

JP: About 1,500 families on two campuses, with an additional 200 “drop-in” adults.

JP: We’re planning a private school campus ... the artistic answer to sports, religion, and academics at schools such as Hockaday, ESD, Ursuline, and St. Mark’s – the only residential arts conservatory for all ages anywhere in the world.

PCL: IS ENTRANCE AUDITION-BASED?

PCL: WHAT MAKES TDC DIFFERENT THAN OTHER LOCAL PERFORMING ARTS SCHOOLS? JP: We’re newer, yet already world-renowned. Our top high schoolers study with illustrious choreographers. Graduates go on to dance programs including Juilliard and USC. A rigorous approach to classical ballet is our foundation, classes are smaller, with the flexibility

HeadFirst Counseling therapists Gracyn Costiloe, Desirae Terry, Laura McLaughlin, and Lexie Sikes

HEAD FIRST FOUNDED IN 2016, HEADFIRST COUNSELING OFFERS A HOLISTIC APPROACH TO CHILD AND ADOLESCENT THERAPY IN DALLAS.

18

M EN TA L WE LLB E IN G | W E LLNE S S

“We are different than a lot of other practices due to our truly personalized and individual approach to therapy,” says Laura McLaughlin (M.Ed., LPC, RPT), founder of HeadFirst Counseling, a private counseling center located in Oak Lawn. A child and adolescent therapist, McLaughlin started her career working with child victims of domestic violence and other abuse. She founded HeadFirst in 2016 after looking—but not finding—a private therapy practice in Dallas where clients would “feel like home and part of the family.” As families get ready to go back to school, we asked McLaughlin more about HeadFirst and what parents should be on the lookout for when it comes to counseling and their kids.

PARK CITIES LIFESTYLE: WHAT MAKES HEADFIRST STAND APART FROM OTHER COUNSELING SERVICES? Laura McLaughlin: We take a very holistic approach when it comes to treatment and regularly work in tandem with occupational therapists, speech therapists, Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) therapists, psychiatrists, neuropsychologists, and nutritionists. This holistic view means we don’t put as much emphasis on diagnosing as other practices might, as our belief is that sometimes focusing on treating just one diagnosis can lead to tunnel vision and missing other significant factors contributing to the problem. PCL: WHAT IS THE APPROACH TO MEDICATION AT HEADFIRST? LM: In some cases, medication can be part of a comprehensive treatment plan, but it is not our first referral or recommendation. Getting your child evaluated for medication to treat mental health concerns is a very personal decision, one which most families do not take lightly. Our goal is to focus on comprehensive therapeutic treatment first and exhaust all other resources before referring for medication.

HE ADFIRST COUNSELING

PCL: WHEN SHOULD A PARENT CALL HEADFIRST? LM: Post-COVID, we have seen a strong resurgence of parents looking to get their child into therapy. Some of the major red flags to look out for are any changes in behavior: children that previously went to bed on their own and now are insisting on sleeping with parents each night; tearful separations that were previously smooth; or extreme behavioral outbursts and meltdowns. Many childhood disorders present as anger and behavioral problems, which is usually the reason parents initially call us. PCL: DO YOUR CLIENTS IMPROVE IN REGARDS TO THEIR SELF-WORTH AND INDEPENDENCE? LM: Utilizing evidence-based techniques and incorporating brain development research leads to highly positive outcomes for most children at our practice. Many children are able to develop skills to self-manage their anxiety or depression and have the coping mechanisms to increase flexibility, confidence, social skills, and adapting when things do not go as expected. When a child feels in control of their emotions and behaviors through utilizing these skills, it leads to a significant improvement in confidence and self-worth as they start to view themselves as capable and competent to manage life. Rescue Me DALLAS IS FULL OF FACILITIES FOR FURRY FRIENDS THAT LOCAL ANIMAL LOVERS NEED TO GET TO KNOW. ARTICLE BY DAVID MUSCARI

Actress Doris Day once remarked, “I’ve never met an animal I didn’t like. I can’t say the same for people.” Everyone believes they have the perfect pet. (And you would be right, of course!) And there are more furry friends out there to make man's or woman's best friend. The undeniable fact is that local shelters are full. And the dogs, cats, and other animals housed there all need love and compassion. From large and well-known to smaller organizations with finely tuned demographic targets, the region is innovative and successful when it comes to pets. Many of these local agencies routinely work together for the greater good of our four-legged friends. Here, we round up a few of our favorites.

Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is a suitable place to start. Founded in 1938, the SPCA of North Texas is the longest-serving animal welfare agency in the region, whose mission is to provide every animal exceptional care and loving homes. In addition to protecting and providing shelter to strays and animals in danger, the SPCA of North Texas deals with proper pet care and animal adoption. (spca.org)

Operation Kindness Founded in 1976, Operation Kindness is a respected pioneer in North Texas. It is privately funded and dedicated to providing healthy and happy pets, advanced medical services to the animals in its care, behavior and enrichment services, and surrender

prevention programs such as a pet food pantry, which last year distributed more than 87,000 lbs. of food, litter, and supplies, in addition to temporary foster assistance, shelter, and care for 4,643 animals. It has a bustling animal hospital, a Parvo ICU, and a neonatal kitten nursery, which speaks to its unique ability to treat animals on-premises. OPK also has a 9,000-square-foot animal hospital, the Rees-Jones Medical Wing, and an expanded, state-of-the-art dog and cat housing for nearly 300 animals each day. Over 80 percent of the animals served in 2021 were transferred from 71 shelter partners, which includes city shelters, humane societies, and smaller rescue groups. Their annual fundraiser is a splashy evening event. Canines, Cats & Cabernet is scheduled for November 12 at the Sheraton Dallas Hotel. (operationkindness.org)

Dallas Pets Alive! Dallas Pets Alive! is another group that’s built a solid reputation in the community. Its goal is to “one day make all of North Texas no-kill,” and its mission is to promote and provide the resources, education, and programs needed to eliminate the killing of companion animals in the DFW region. The nonprofit takes an innovative approach to animal rescue, with the goal of creating a paradigm shift in the way the community views animal rescue. Run mostly by volunteers, all of their pets are housed by foster families throughout the region, rescuing and helping healthy and treatable pets at greatest risk for euthanasia. Dallas Pets Alive! also aids and provides resources to owners having problems so substantial that they need to surrender their pets to a shelter. (petsalive.org) CONTINUED >

23

The Humane Society of North Texas The Humane Society of North Texas is another wellknown nonprofit that receives no operational funding from any national animal welfare organization. The organization has built policies around saving lives and HSNT reports that its adoptions have grown in the past few years by expanding the transfer and foster programs in order to help save even more lives. HSNT’s average live release rate in 2021 was 96 percent or greater, due to an unwavering commitment to find homes for all pets in their care, or transfer them to other shelters, rescues, or foster homes. (hsnt.org)

Dallas Animal Services Dallas Animal Services recently launched an intriguing supplemental campaign called Dallas90 that showcases the lifesaving community outreach work by the City of Dallas. It is designed to generate even more public support for their work to find positive outcomes for all healthy and behaviorally sound pets. One local agency commented that the DAS effort is “knocking it out of the park” and gaining positive attention among colleagues in the pet community. The sleek new website is interactive, mobile-friendly, and highlights DAS programs and services, lifesaving statistics, and ways to get involved. (bedallas90.org)

The Spay Neuter Network The Spay Neuter Network is an integral member of a unique partnership program between the City of Dallas and DAS that addresses feral cat issues, provides resources to keep pets in their homes, helps owners rehome their pets, and routes pets directly to rescue groups for quicker adoptions. SNN is an important provider when it comes to vaccines and microchipping, and works in close concert with other local agencies such as Operation Kindness. (spayneuternet.org) Operation Kindness

Dogs Matter Dogs Matter is another local rescue organization with a distinctive niche. It provides free, temporary foster placement and a variety of supportive services specifically for dogs of addicts and alcoholics seeking treatment and transitioning into recovery. Founded in 2014 by Stephen Knight, a former addict and longtime substance abuse counselor, he estimates they’ve helped hundreds of dogs and their owners. Donorsupported, Dogs Matter handles food and veterinarian services, regularly updates clients, and includes free aftercare follow-ups for up to a year. Knight’s goal is to have services in every major city over the next decade. “We also hope to have a Dallas facility [they currently operate with a special van that was donated by CarLotz during a TV appearance on the “Kelly Clarkson Show”] that can have a place for the dog and client to get healthy by boarding, daycare, training for the dog, and treatment for the owner. You can bring your dog to play while you attend a 12-step meeting.” (dogsmatter2.org)

Dondolo Does More Catalina Gonzalez created a luxury lifestyle brand that provides children and women with beautiful, heirloom-quality clothing. ARTICLE BY EMILY C. LASKOWSKI | PHOTOGRAPHY BY DONDOLO

After having her first child in 2012, Catalina Gonzalez decided to start a clothing company. She wanted to somehow fulfill her creative outlet but also create something that gave back—here in Dallas as well as in her native country of Colombia. After existing first as a website and then as a wholesaler to boutiques, her luxury brand, Dondolo, now sells directly to consumers and has its own storefront in the Design District. We asked Catalina, now a mom of four, about life as a business owner, parenting, and whether she believes in work-life balance.

28

T R E N D SE T T E R | STY L E + BE AUTY

Park Cities Lifestyle: What is it that makes Dondolo clothes so special? Catalina Gonzalez: The hand-made details in everything we do. I purposefully add a handmade (hand-embroidered or hand-smocked) detail to every piece. Each piece is full of the craftsmanship and love of every woman that embroiders it! Our clothing is manufactured in Colombia and made by local women and mothers, helping them earn the funds they need to help raise their children. I have employed over 100 women in our factory and over 50 of them embroider every piece by hand! I love knowing that when a customer buys from us, they are truly helping to make a difference in these families’ lives.

PCL: How does being a parent influence your work at Dondolo? CG: I love being a boy mom and I love being able to make beautiful heirloom clothing not only for girls but for boys too! Matching with my boys is my favorite, so it’s been so exciting to launch collections that have options for boy moms just like me! Being a mom of four, I understand how much our bodies as women change, so I want to create comfortable, yet elegant and flattering dresses that could be worn at any stage of womanhood. PCL: What do you look for when it comes to your own kids’ clothes? CG: I always make sure it has matching styles in sizes ranging from 2 to 12. I love a brother matching moment and I will try to keep doing it until my 11-year-old says no more (I am getting close). But for now, I am enjoying the sweet matching Dondolo memories! I also look for quality—I love being able to pass down all the Dondolo clothing my oldest and middle child wore when they were little. I love clothing that remains in perfect condition wash after wash! PCL: With kids and a business, is there any truth to finding that work-life balance? CG: I don’t believe in balance—I believe in “filling your cups” and getting rid of guilt when I fill my cups of being a mom, a wife, and a business owner. I want to be present at after-school pick-up, at soccer games, and putting my children to bed every night. As Dondolo’s designer, I want to be the best leader I can be for my team. I also aim to make time for myself and indulge in simple pleasures that make me happy. This includes going for my runs, treating myself to a monthly facial, and having lunch with a friend. Once I realized I couldn’t be everywhere at the same time and stopped feeling guilty about it, it was easier for me to be present, more productive, and enjoy every moment to the fullest.

PCL: What do you love about the Park Cities and being based in Dallas? CG: I love, love, love the Dallas community of women: The friends I have made, the entrepreneurs, and our community of Dondolo moms! Their support and love are what make us who we are today! I love how important it is for our community to give back and help those in need—something Dondolo and myself share! The support from other women-owned businesses has been incredible too. Laguna Beach

Why This Quintessential California Colony Should Be Your Next Travel Destination!

Visit

There’s a reason people visit the Southern California coastal city of Laguna Beach an average of five times in their lifetime. From its stunning oceanside bluffs overlooking 30 Pacific Ocean beaches and coves to its fusion of beautiful canyon wilderness with tranquil ocean life, fresh-ingredients cuisine and eclectic arts culture, Laguna Beach is a time-honored destination full of vibrant and invigorating seaside experiences. This month, our City Lifestyle community of luxury travel enthusiasts are thrilled to collaborate with Visit Laguna Beach to present a breathtaking view into this idyllic West Coast artist community. Plus, together, we have created an exclusive GIVEAWAY opportunity to win a 2-night trip for two. Get ready to experience the upscale and creative culture alongside the lively, yet quirky personality of Laguna Beach! When it comes to prestigious travel hospitality, The Ranch at Laguna Beach is highly regarded by luxury and discerning travel authorities such as Condé Nast, Forbes, and Travel & Leisure for its congenial service, elevated ambiance and reputable guest experience. The upscale, outdoor wellness offerings range from the uniquely designed 9-hole golf course within the canyon setting to the full-time farmer facilitating outstanding local dishes offered on the original homestead of Laguna Beach. And what would the Laguna Beach culture be without all of the seaside activities? Kayaking, snorkeling and diving, whale and dolphin watching, SUP—you name it, you can experience it. Laguna Beach is seven miles of coves and beaches uniquely its own with breathtaking cliffs and recreational canyons and a hippy-loving-self-expression-embracing artist colony that you won’t want to miss in this lifetime.
