My family life is currently dominated by gentlemen. My husband, two little boys, and our dog, Dobby. As this issue goes to press, I’m awaiting the arrival of my third child—and we won’t know boy or girl until the little one gets here. This June marks our annual Gentlemen’s issue, and the timing of it with my own family’s expansion has made me think a lot about our family’s dynamics. If it’s another boy, can I cram them (and their stinky, wrestling ways) all into one room together? If it’s a girl, will I inherit a young lady like myself, one less into smocking and more into shin guards? Of course, a healthy baby is all we truly want. There are more than enough reminders of why that’s all that really matters: from watching close friends navigate childhood cancer to reading the wire reports from war-torn parts of the world. And so this issue, too, should serve as a friendly catalog of the things we’re lucky to talk about here in the Park Cities. For example: fitness regimes no matter your age, financial advice from your neighborhood bank, local heroes like the late Max Glauben, and Father’s Day gifts for the special dads in your life. Which brings me back to the gentlemen around me. By the time you read this, there will be another member to my family. And if he or she has the humor of my husband, the aptitude of my first-born, the exuberance of my soon-to-be middle child, and the loyalty of Dobby (let’s be honest, our first child), I think we’ll be in pretty good shape. All those traits—and so much more—make for a happy life. So, when it comes to gentlemen, I hope the ones in your life bring you just as much joy. E M I LY C . PCL: With rising interest rates and a variety of inflationary factors to deal with nowadays, what advice are you giving clients? MW: If a home is under construction, for example, we can do a long-term lock that helps secure your rate for the long haul. In this environment, as soon as they are able to secure a contract on a property, we can lock in a rate. Many factors are making the market unstable, so it’s a good time to secure your rate. If a client wants to move soon, I like to do what we call a “full credit qualification” to prepare for selling their home and buying a new one, and make sure it’s beneficial. We have programs where clients can purchase new homes, through a special investor, then sell their existing homes so they’re not left homeless. We compete with cash offers by swift closings and can put a rush appraisal on properties to try and close within two or three weeks to compete with cash. CONTINUED >

Dieting seems to be America’s most predictable pastime. The process can lose steam and falter at the beginning, middle, and end. As some experts will tell you, most fail before they even start. “I’ll do it later,” or “after the holidays are over.” There are many excuses. However, there are some very good reasons most diets die right out of the starting blocks, often leaving people despondent and simply fed up with the process. Enter Tom and Katie Hough of Fit Body Boot Camp in Richardson. Since 2016, the married couple has been serving DFW residents with their special focus on health. The Dallas Holocaust and Human Rights Museum mourns the passing of Holocaust Survivor, passionate advocate, cherished friend, and co-founder and lifetime Museum director Max Glauben. After enduring the worst of humanity, Max dedicated his life to sharing his journey, honoring his family’s memory, and delivering his message to never give up. Born Moniek Mendel Glauben on January 14, 1928, Max grew up in Warsaw, Poland, with his mother and father, Faiga and Isaak, and little brother, Heniek. He was only 11 when Germany invaded his hometown. He survived starvation and disease in the Warsaw Ghetto until the defeat of the ghetto uprising in May 1943. Max and his fellow inmates were liberated by the U.S. Army on April 23, 1945. He immigrated to the United States in 1947 and eventually served in the U.S. Army. After being stationed in Fort Hood, he moved to Dallas, where he built a new life with his wife, Frieda. “Max embodied the spirit of resiliency. He turned the atrocities inf licted upon him, his family, and six million Jews during the Holocaust into a message of kindness, love, and optimism,” said Museum President and CEO Mary Pat Higgins. “He taught us that there is hope in hopelessness and that one person can make a difference.” While Max may not have had formal schooling past age 11, he gave the world an invaluable education. Over the decades, Max shared his story with thousands of schoolchildren, many of whom now have children of their own who also learned from his profound lessons. He often told students to be thankful for their parents and the
right to education—because he had both taken from him. For 14 years, Max participated in the International March of the Living, helping lead young people to Poland and Israel to learn about the Holocaust and to explore the roots of antisemitism and hatred. In the late 1970s, Max was a part of a group of local Holocaust Survivors who came together with the goal of creating a memorial center where they could remember their loved ones and educate future generations about the devastating horrors of the Holocaust. He devoted his life to this work, from the Museum’s first home at the Jewish Community Center in 1984, to the move downtown in 2005, to the 2019 opening of the Dallas Holocaust and Human Rights Museum—a dream 40 years in the making. In 2018, Max was filmed by the USC Shoah Foundation as part of a pioneering project to record the testimonies of Holocaust Survivors to create an interactive biography to allow future generations to have conversations with these eyewitnesses to history. Max is one of 12 Survivors featured in the interactive Dimensions in TestimonySM Theater experience at the Dallas Holocaust and Human Rights Museum. In an interview for filming his testimony, Max shared, “I thought that my knowledge could cure the hatred and bigotry and the killings in this world if somebody can listen to my story, my testimony, and be educated even after I’m gone.” In honor of this, Max was the featured speaker at the Museum’s Dimensions in TestimonySM through May. Afterward, he will continue as the featured Survivor every Friday. CONTINUED >

“Max embodied the spirit of resiliency. He turned the atrocities inflicted upon him, his family, and six million Jews during the Holocaust into a message of kindness, love, and optimism. He taught us that there is hope in hopelessness and that one person can make a difference.” Max was recently celebrated by the Museum in November 2021 as the honoree of the Hope for Humanity award. He was named “Texan of the Year” in 2019 by the Dallas Morning News. In 2020, SMU conferred upon him an honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters in recognition for his exceptional and extensive work combatting intolerance and keeping the memory of the Holocaust alive. Max is survived by his loving wife of nearly 69 years, Frieda, their three children, seven grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

About the Dallas Holocaust and Human Rights Museum The mission of the Dallas Holocaust and Human Rights Museum is to teach the history of the Holocaust and advance human rights to combat prejudice, hatred, and indifference. Founded in 1984 by local Holocaust survivors, the institution now resides in a new building in downtown Dallas where visitors experience a deeper immersion into the history of the Holocaust, human and civil rights, their centrality to our democracy, and their vital importance in preventing events like those of the Holocaust from happening again.
