Personalized Care

Exceptional Results Your best interests are truly at heart. If I had to do it all over again, I would pick Dr. Walker and her staff for any procedure in a heartbeat! They were the most non-judgmental, welcoming, reassuring team… and I have incredible results. I had a breast reduction done not even 3 weeks ago and my recovery has been unbelievably easy. I have never felt for even a second that Dr. Walker, her patient coordinator Madison, or any member of her team did not have my best interest at heart. Dr Walker’s bedside manner and friendly personality sold me immediately, and I have zero regrets choosing her for my procedure.

Sweet & Informative “She was sweet, informative, made me comfortable being a senior to discuss concerns, helpful and full of knowledge. She is funny so that helped me since I was already so nervous.”

LIFESTYLE LETTER

Wearing Many Hats

May 2022 PUBLISHER

Rod Patten | rod.patten@citylifestyle.com SOCIAL MEDIA COOR DINATOR

Katie Bevan | katie.bevan@citylifestyle.com

My first big editing job was at a local publication called Austin Woman. I was the editor and worked with a nimble team of just one other editor, a couple designers, and our sales and marketing team—all women. We covered the female business and community leaders in the capital city and worked feverishly to give our mostly female readership the information they wanted and deserved in glossy—but free—magazine form. It was no easy feat, managing a shallow budget, wearing multiple hats, and trying to be a positive influence in a growing community. But we pursued those goals day in and day out to showcase the wonderful work that women were doing in Central Texas. And what I found was that this dedication to getting the job done is what women do best. With that background, I’ve been thrilled to research, write, and edit this annual Ladies’ issue of Park Cities Lifestyle. In Dallas, with its outsized patronage for the arts, immense commitment to culture, and longstanding business pedigree, the opportunities to write about local women and their accomplishments is what we might call an embarrassment of riches. In this issue, we’ve chosen to highlight the incredible service of Marsha Williamson of the Dallas 24 Hour Club, a local nonprofit serving the homeless; Evelyn and Ellen Middleton, the mother-daughter founders of a luxury moving company; and a bevy of recipes from female chefs just in time for Mother’s Day. Oddly, what I love most about this issue is who might be missing—the woman you know that is doing something remarkable here in the Park Cities, but isn’t featured in our pages yet. I hope perusing our stories this month inspires you to tell us about the influential women in your neighborhood or community, the ones you want to see in our next Ladies’ issue. Remember, we know how to wear many hats, and that includes taking notes for next year. E M I LY C . L A S K O W S K I , E D I T O R @PA RKCITIE SLIFE S T Y LE

The 24 LED BY MARSHA WILLIAMSON, THE DALLAS 24 HOUR CLUB HELPS THE HOMELESS CREATE A NEW LIFE FREE OF ADDICTION.

ARTICLE BY KAYLEE BRISTER PHOTOGRAPHY BY GRANT

When Marsha Williamson first stepped foot into the Dallas 24 Hour Club in 2013, she saw that the building was in grave condition and was putting the long-term success of the local nonprofit in jeopardy. The state of the facility — coupled with her personal experience of a having a loved one suffer from addiction — motivated her to support The 24, which has been in operation since 1969. Williamson initially joined The 24 as its development director in 2013, became its executive director in 2014, and was hired as CEO in 2017. Through her leadership and experience, Williamson spearheaded the effort to build a new 14,000-square-foot facility on Ross Avenue in 2018. The 75-bed home served 600 men and women during the first year of operation and has continued to serve a multitude since — 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. CONTINUED >

“Our residents come to us broken, without any hope of finding a way out of their addictions, which have brought them to the point where they have lost the means to support themselves and have lost all their important relationships. The 24 steps in and offers them a brand-new start in a family-like environment, if they are willing to make recovery their top priority.”

— Marsha Williamson

“The 24 offers immediate support to meet our residents’ physiological needs … a hot shower, fresh clothing, food for the first 30 days, linens, and toiletries throughout their stay, as well as free medical care through Parkland [Health & Hospital System],” Williamson says. “Recovery is also very key for the resident to be able to make the much-needed physic changes. The 24 offers 36 on-site recovery meetings per week, which are open to the community, and opportunities to link up with a community member for sponsorship. Sponsors are a key ‘ingredient’ to the goal of long-term.” More key ingredients? A monthly steak dinner with salad, baked beans, a fully-loaded baked potato, live music, and fellowship. “Our residents come to us broken, without any hope of finding a way out of their addictions, which have brought them to the point where they have lost the means to support themselves and have lost all their important relationships. The 24 steps in and offers them a brand-new start in a family-like environment, if they are willing to make recovery their top priority,” Williamson says.

20

G IV IN G BAC K | L IFE + CULTURE

Even after recovery, The 24 continues to provide support through the Tillman House, an 18-unit sober living apartment complex that’s strictly designated for graduates of its program. There, graduates adjust to a slightly less structured, yet staffed environment where they work to rebuild their relationships, manage their finances, and become employed. They’re also offered the opportunity to give back to the recovery community by serving new residents. Support is a large factor in starting a fresh, sober life. Those in the Park Cities community can support the nonprofit during North Texas Giving Day on September 22, 2022, by joining Friends of the 24, or by attending events throughout the year. “Our friends in the Park Cities have been incredible supporters of The 24. They have been most generous financially, with in-kind gifts, and with their time and talent,” Williamson says. “We would greatly appreciate our Park Cities friends and new Park Cities friends to continue to support The 24 in these ways.” For more information, visit dallas24hourclub.org.

Add the pecans if desired. 3. Gently mix the wet ingredients into the dry mixture using a rubber spatula. 4. Line a baking pan with parchment paper and grease generously. Pour the batter into the pan. 5. Top with the brown butter oat streusel (see recipe below). 6. Bake at 350 degrees for about an hour or until a toothpick comes out clean.

STRAWBERRY & CREAM GALETTE makes:

8-10 servings

Galette Dough ingredients: • • • • • •

1 cup all-purpose flour 1/3 cup rye or whole-wheat flour 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 cup very cold, unsalted butter 1 1/2 teaspoons apple cider vinegar 5-7 tablespoons ice water

Vanilla Pastry Cream ingredients: • • • • • •

17 fluid ounces milk 5 egg yolks 1/2 cup plus 2 tablespoons sugar 5 tablespoons flour 3 tablespoons unsalted butter 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

directions:

directions:

1. Whisk the flour and salt together in a large bowl. Cut the butter into 1/4-inch cubes. Working quickly, add the butter to the flour and toss to coat. If you have a pastry blender, use that to cut the butter into smaller, pea-sized pieces. 2. Use your fingers to press each cube of butter into a flat sheet. Keep tossing the butter in the flour as you go to ensure that each butter piece is coated with flour. If at any time the butter seems warm or soft, briefly refrigerate the blow. 3. Sprinkle the vinegar over the flour mixture and then drizzle about 1/2 of the ice water into the mixture. Use a gentle hand or a wooden spoon to stir the water into the flour until just combined. Alternate between drizzling in the water and lightly stirring the flour mixture. If the dough seems dry, add more cold water, a teaspoon at a time. You have added enough water when you can pick up a handful of the dough and easily squeeze it together without it falling apart. 4. Press the dough together, form it into a disk and wrap it in plastic wrap. Chill the dough for at least 1 hour before using. The dough will keep for up to three months in the freezer wrapped in a double layer of plastic wrap and a layer of foil. Thaw in the refrigerator before using.

1. Heat the milk until scalding. While the milk is heating, whisk the yolks and sugar in a separate bowl until smooth and pale yellow. Add the flour and mix until smooth. 2. Once the milk is heated, temper the yolk mixture with hot milk by scooping a ladle of hot milk into the yolk mix and whisking. Then slowly pour the mixture into the hot milk. Using a whisk, constantly stir the pastry cream while you bring it to a boil. Once boiling, continue whisking for two minutes until the pastry cream is thick. 3. Remove from the heat and pass through a sieve. Whisk in the butter and vanilla extract and let cool completely before refrigerating. Be sure to place plastic wrap against the surface of the pastry cream so that it does not form a skin. Pastry cream can be frozen for longer storage.

TO ASSEMBLE ingredients: • • • • •

Galette Dough (see recipe) Vanilla Pastry Cream (see recipe) 1 pound fresh strawberries, sliced 1 egg yolk 2 tablespoons coarse sugar (turbinado or demerara)

directions: 1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone liner. 2. On a lightly floured surface, roll the galette dough (see recipe) into a rough circle between 1/8- and ¼-inch thick and transfer it to the parchment-lined baking sheet. 3. Spread a thick layer of vanilla pastry cream (see recipe) onto the dough, leaving a 3-inch border of dough, and then place the sliced strawberries on the pastry cream. You can pile the strawberries high as they will reduce when cooking. 4. Fold the edges of the dough up and over the edges of the fruit and press the folds gently to seal. Refrigerate or freeze the formed galettes until the dough is very firm, about 20 minutes. 5. Make an egg wash by whisking one egg yolk, 1 tablespoon of water and a small pinch of salt. Brush the galette dough with egg wash and sprinkle the coarse sugar over the entire galette – dough and fruit. 6. Place the galette in the top third of the oven and bake for 45-55 minutes until deep, golden brown and bubbling. If the bottom is browning too quickly, place a second bakingsheet underneath. Let cool before slicing and serving.

AVANCÉ MOVING & STORAGE TAKES THE GUESSWORK OUT OF MOVING WITH LUXURY SERVICES. Moving spaces, whether residential or commercial, takes a lot of time, preparation, and care. Valuable items are removed from walls, heirlooms are wrapped carefully, and every last item is placed in a box and sealed up — all to be undone again later. Without attention to detail and caution, special items can easily be damaged or misplaced during the process. That’s why for moving and storage companies, it’s important not to cut any corners. Mother-daughter duo Evelyn and Ellen Middleton and family friend RD Foster saw the need for a luxury, white-glove service in Dallas that could move and store clients’

most valuable items, from fine art to fragile antiques to handmade rugs, with the utmost care. In November 2020, the Dallasites opened Avancé Moving & Storage, a company that has transformed moving and storage for homeowners, interior designers, and developers with the latest technology. Foster, co-owner and general manager of Avancé, has three-plus decades of experience in the moving and storage industry. Since moving to Dallas from Amarillo, Texas, in the 1980s, Foster has worked at two of the most prestigious moving companies in the city, with clientele including Troy Aikman and Ross Perot.

MOVING & STORAGE

Evelyn Middleton, co-owner and president, has also lived in Dallas since the 1980s. Before co-founding Avancé, she was a third-generation business owner with her brothers. She also currently owns Blue Spruce Properties, a local real estate investment company that flips houses in the metroplex alongside her daughter, Ellen. Ellen Middleton, COO and co-owner, was born in Dallas and recently graduated from Texas State University. She’s a licensed real estate agent and the lead interior designer for all Blue Spruce properties. “Dallas is not only our home, but also the place that we want to be able to provide excellent customer service to our friends and neighbors,” Ellen says. With Foster’s experience in the moving and storage industry, Evelyn’s entrepreneurial spirit, and Ellen’s expertise in interior design and real estate, the trio is able to successfully set Avancé apart from other services in the area. “The biggest thing that sets us apart from other moving and storage companies is our employees. Our employees have the utmost care for our customers’ belongings, homes, and privacy; and they train and work very diligently to provide our customers with the best possible service,” Ellen says. “Avancé’s decision to implement the very best technology in our business was not only to provide our customers with the best experience possible, but also to allow our employees to work as efficiently as possible.”

Thanks to Avancé’s technology, gone are the days of rummaging through boxes looking for items. The family-operated business has an interactive photo system that gives customers easier access to their things. “When Avancé receives items for customers, they are carefully unpackaged, checked for damage, photographed, measured, and repackaged in more appropriate storage packing materials. All this information is input immediately into our online inventory system using iPads,” Ellen explains. “After the information is entered, the customer receives an email notification with all the details … including photos of the item. This is particularly important for our interior designer customers because it is critical that they know when specific items arrive for their own projects.” In addition to moving services and a photo inventory system, Avancé offers storage facilities with a 24/7 viewing portal online, art installation and storage, national and international shipping, and paperless operations. The company is currently in the process of creating an all-inclusive system that will allow customers to access account details, pay current invoices, and view estimates online. “From the beginning, [we] knew it would be important for Avancé to be a paperless operation because it was something that RD knew was a pressure point for a lot of other moving and storage companies in Dallas. Since the 80s, he’s seen it all — from customers’ items being damaged, misplaced, or even stolen from a company’s warehouse,” Ellen says. “To mitigate these issues, we knew we had to be a paperless operation.” For those with luxury items, it only makes sense to trust a luxury moving and storage facility. The biggest piece of advice Avancé can give to potential customers is this: You get what you pay for. “While that may seem obvious, it is especially important in the moving and storage industry,” Ellen says. “It is easy for companies to quote low prices and do low quality work, but in the end, it is the customer that pays the ultimate price when their most precious items are damaged, lost, or destroyed.” Whether you’re preparing for a big move, a client installation, or wanting to store seasonal items, the team at Avancé is prepared to help — with a nitro cold brew waiting for you at their office. ARTICLE BY EMILY C. LASKOWSKI PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY KOHLER SIGNATURE STORE

C ome Cle a n Freshen up the bathroom this summer with trends and designs from some of our favorite experts. With more than 30 years of experience among its team of designers, the Kohler Signature Store in the Knox Street shopping district brings bathroom design services to a new level for Park Cities residents. “We love working with clients in the Park Cities area,” says store manager Laurie Ramirez. “They have a well-traveled, sophisticated taste level, are easy to work with, and they are quintessential Texans!” We asked Ramirez and her team what their favorite bathroom trends are heading into the summer season. And although Ramirez says the colors of her dream bathroom change daily, we got plenty of input from the design team on what to look for.

JOHN WILSON Trends: Seeing brighter, warmer colors. Most requested: Intelligent toilets. Favorite items: Digital controls for the shower.

JOE STANFORD Trends: We are seeing the bathrooms go warmer, with more taupe and colors such as sage—less grey/white combos. Vanities that are designed to look like a good piece of furniture, with legs and detailed hardware. Most requested: Our Brushed Bronze finish is really popular in this area.

DOUG CROSS Trends: No more boring bathrooms. Seeing less grey and white combos, and starting to see more greens and blues, more nature colors. Most requested: Faucets and fixtures in Modern Brushed Brass. Favorite items: Freestanding tubs where people can relax more in today’s crazy world.

ALI OTSTOTT Trends: Digital valves. Now that we have more options, I am sure we will see them in more of the bathrooms, not just the primary bath. Favorite items: Tile! Love to mix it up using different but coordinating tile in my projects.

BARBARA SAMMON Trends: The use of lighting to set the mood in the bathroom. It’s not an afterthought anymore. The use of lit mirrors/medicine cabinets allowing the client to change the lighting based on application. Tile has become an important part of the bathroom, from flowing in a simple minimalistic manner to that huge wow factor with color and texture. Learn more at kohlersignaturestoredallas.com.
