April 2022 PUBLISHER

Rod Patten | rod.patten@citylifestyle.com EDITOR

I didn’t know much about Dallas other than the Cotton Bowl and the Meyerson Symphony Center when I moved here five years ago. Born and raised in Austin, I had come to Dallas on school trips (the Meyerson) and for the annual Texas-Oklahoma Red River Showdown every October (the Cotton Bowl). My family doesn’t hail from the North Texas region, and arriving here meant I needed a swift education into all that Dallas offers. It’s fitting, then, that my first issue—the Explore issue—is my first one as editor of Park Cities Lifestyle. In putting together our stories this month, I got to revisit many of the places that helped me settle into life as a Dallasite years ago; I also learned new things about the Big D that continue to impress me. Moving to a new city is daunting. And especially in Texas, transplants (like myself) from another metropolitan area tend to bring a certain skepticism with them: Where am I going to get a good margarita? Do they even have walking trails here? You get the idea. And by the way, not surprisingly, I found both margaritas and walking trails in abundance in the Park Cities. The thing about new residents is that they tend to get out and explore more than native dwellers. When I lived in Austin, I never tried new things. But in Dallas, I’m game for anything. In this issue, we wanted to highlight the places you know and love—but also shine a light on new experiences worth discovering. Whether it’s traveling outside the neighborhood (page 34), the city limits (page 26), or the Lone Star State itself (page 18), there are so many exciting places to go and see. And after years of perhaps feeling isolated or cooped up, what better time to get out and explore?

Dream Destinations WITH AN UNCOMPROMISING DEDICATION TO LUXURY AND A DEVOTION TO DISCOVERY, ALL THE PLACES TRAVEL CREATES UNFORGETTABLE VACATION EXPERIENCES.

ARTICLE BY DAVID MUSCARI PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY ALL THE PLACES TRAVEL Luxury travel advisor Holly Malloy is an expert in her field. She specializes in finding what’s unique—close to home or across the globe—then crafting tailor-made vacations centered exclusively around her clients’ needs, all designed to make their dream vacations a one-of-a-kind experience. While the travel business is certainly easier said than done, Malloy says she loves the challenge presented by her work. She also adores her clients. “I am a hard-working, selfless individual who wants nothing but the best for my clients,” Malloy says. “I will do everything to ensure their experience is a memorable one.” How does she differentiate her company, All the Places Travel, from others? “I treat each trip as if it is my own,” she explains. “I’m with my

18

clients from the start of their dream vacation to the time they arrive back home.” Malloy describes her company, which she started in 2019, as dedicated to white-glove service: “Not only will I take the burden of planning off clients’ shoulders, but I’ll also be there with you on every step of your memorable journey.” As a seasoned travel veteran, Malloy also knows the right questions to ask in the planning process to make journeys go as smoothly as possible. “After the initial planning is finalized, I make certain to be tuned-in to all applicable travel guidelines, including VISA and COVID-entry requirements for the different countries,” she says.

And someone with her experience brings a deep well of destination knowledge to the table. Does she have favorites? What about popular places for Park Cities residents—a significant part of her client base—that are quick and easy? “This is where my job as a travel agent comes into play,” she says, explaining how her 15 years as a corporate flight attendant traveling the world contributes to her special insights. “With luxury clients, we have access to private jets, where any destination is easy to get to, or at least with minimal hassle. There are also some incredible luxury ranches in Texas that will allow for a quick getaway for spa treatments, golf, and even hunting/shooting excursions.”

Malloy adds that other popular destinations include the Virgin Islands and areas throughout Europe including Croatia, Greece, and Italy. “River cruises in Europe are widely popular because you have the ability to tour the countryside in a more intimate fashion than cruising on the ocean,” she says. And expedition cruising is also becoming more popular. “I just returned from a trip from Africa with Abercrombie and Kent, one of our top vendors,” Malloy says. “That was the trip of a lifetime.” Travel in the United States or Canada is also always a hit, including Malloy’s popular “train trips.” The Rocky Mountaineer is a wonderful example where the “majesty of the Rockies meets the comfort of luxury train travel.” As for summer travel tips and beyond, Malloy is brimming with innovative ideas: domestically, there is the Maine Lobster Festival beginning July 29 and the US Open in Massachusetts from June 13-21. Beyond destinations, Malloy says one of her most important tips is “to be aware of the the ever-changing COVID rules and regulations for travel requirements; and insurance is a must.” Around the world,

she mentions a number of additional exciting destinations including Japan’s annual Cherry Blossom Festival in March and April; the Henley Royal Regatta in England from late June to early July; the British Open in July at St. Andrews in Scotland; the “Big 5” Migration in Kenya in July and August; the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and Edinburg International Festival in Scotland in August, which hosts theater companies from around the world; and the FIFA World Cup in Qatar beginning November 21. In the end, Malloy views travel as a necessity, especially as the pandemic has impacted lives for two-plus years now. “I think everyone can agree

that travel is essential for our health and well-being,” she says. “I have made my mission at All the Places Travel to work closely with clients who are seeking customized, luxury vacations while staying diligently mindful of all COVID issues.” Malloy’s long-standing partnership with clients is at the heart of her success. “To help them enjoy time with families and loved ones as they experience the world’s top-ranked destinations,” she says, “for me, that’s the greatest reward of all.” Browse more of Malloy’s destination recommendations, services, and amenities at alltheplacestravel.com or reach out to Malloy directly at (214) 616-2914 or holly@alltheplacestravel.com.

LONG COVE IS A 1,200-ACRE LAKEFRONT COMMUNITY JUST OUTSIDE DALLAS BUTWORLDS AWAY.

ARTICLE BY DAVID MUSCARI | PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY LONG COVE LUXURY LAKE HOMES

26

O PE N H OU SE | HOM E + DE S I GN

Long Cove Luxury Lake Homes started as little more than a big idea. To create a luxury lakefront community close to Dallas with the comforts of home, but without the maintenance headaches. A place to unplug and enjoy, inspired by Horseshoe Bay near Austin and the Florida coastal communities of Seaside and Watercolor. Long Cove brings those experiences closer to home. It is the premier, second-home lake destination for many Park Cities families. Why do weekends feel longer here? Maybe because it only takes an hour and change to drive from Dallas on a Friday afternoon. Or because you never really have to fool with a boat or pool if you don’t want to. And considering all the entertainment options, weekends seem longer because the fun is already baked in with pickleball, golf, and tennis, not to mention pools, a waterslide, miles of hiking trails, an adventure park, fishing ponds, beach volleyball, and lakeside bonfire pits. And with six miles of shoreline at the deep end of Cedar Creek Reservoir, people appreciate what they find at Long Cove: an easy, year-round getaway where everyone waves. The Long Cove team continues to build and design its unique family homes, community spaces, amenities, and conveniences of resort-style living. In 2017, it successfully completed several major development projects. Henderson Bay, a stunning 40-acre park and cove opened,

and a trio of new neighborhoods took shape: Henderson Bay, North Shore, and West Point. A third golf venue was added—Thistle Never Dhu, a two-acre thrill ride of a putting green designed by David Zinkand of Oregon’s Bandon Dunes fame. And Long Cove continues to expand and raise the bar on comforts. Phase I of Harbor Front Townhomes is complete and Phase II is underway; a collection of cottages overlooking the new Bayside infinity pool as well as all of the custom waterfront home sites on Henderson Bay have been sold; and development has begun on the new South Shore neighborhood.

“Why do weekends feel longer here? Maybe because it only takes an hour and change to drive from Dallas on a Friday afternoon.”

GREEN WITH ENVY

One of renowned artist Robert Indiana’s celebrated LOVE sculptures stands proudly in Williams Park.

THERE’S AN ABUNDANCE OF PARKS, LARGE AND SMALL, TO EXPLORE IN THE PARK CITIES. Park Cities neighborhoods are celebrated often for world-class shopping, but not nearly enough for their plethora of green spaces large and small. Many are tributes to local leaders who made lasting contributions. Favorites include special needs Coffee Park, Artha Garza Park, and Elena’s Children’s Park. Other favorites include:

1. Williams Park Williams Park was named in honor of Mayor Elbert Williams. It has soccer fields, tennis courts, and a fishing pier. One of artist Robert Indiana’s celebrated LOVE sculptures (there are fewer than 25 of the originals in the United States) stands proudly.

2. Caruth Park Benefactor W. W. Caruth Sr. deeded the land where Caruth Park stands today, one of the area’s largest with a sports field, playgrounds, a pond, and tennis ball courts.

3. Curtis Park Curtis Park is the area’s summer recreational hub, featuring an aquatic center with a 50-meter pool and surrounded by a lovely park. Visit uptexas.org for more information.

DARE TO EXPLORE AND DISCOVER THE CULINARY DELIGHTS OF PARADISO IN OAK CLIFF’S BISHOP ARTS DISTRICT.

Springtime in Dallas is a sight to behold. Brilliant blue skies and plenty of warm sunshine. The Bishop Arts District in historic Oak Cliff is the perfect place to enjoy the season, especially when it involves one of the region’s top restaurants. Welcome to the incomparable Paradiso. Whether it’s a special brunch, late dinner, or evening out, Paradiso suits a variety of tastes. The Southern Europeaninspired brasserie is imbued with lush greenery and luxurious custom furniture, ideal for dining al fresco in the courtyard. And thanks to executive chef Nick Hurry, the menu is curated with just as much care. Focusing on seasonal ingredients, Paradiso prepares its offerings in-house, including wood-fired flatbreads and a variety of hand-made pastas. Wild-caught fish, steak frites, and grilled pork chops are all house specialties. The desserts—to die for; and the craft cocktails—refreshing. Springtime is in full swing, and whether that means dining inside or outside, Paradiso presents all the right options.
