LIFESTYLE LETTER

Nothing is More Important

January 2022 PUBLISHER

Health and Wellness is one of my favorite topics. I love the diversity of ways that we can improve our training, diet, nutrition, or mental health. There are so many things to learn but one of the most important is learning what works for you. It has been a lifelong journey for me. Experience is a great teacher, and one of the things I have learned is that your needs change over time. For me, it is important to tweak my diet and training from time to time to get optimal results. The fascinating thing is that what works for me may work perfectly for you, somewhat for you, or not at all. The most important thing you can do is to understand you, and keep modifying your own program for optimal physical and mental health. This Health and Wellness issue we hope inspires you to improve your own program. We introduce you to Valerie Grimes and The Flow Center for Hypnosis. She can treat anxiety, depression, drug and alcohol issues and the list goes on and on. Maybe you should try the services of Clinic Concierge. In home visits and telehealth are safer and more convenient than the doctors office for medications, tests, hydration, or cosmetic injections. Or maybe you should try The Cryo Spa and In just 3 minutes you can treat pain, arthritis, and get a whole host of other benefits for body. May 2022 be the year that we all improve our self-care by trying new things, and paying attention to the results. I know that by taking better care of ourselves we are then able to pour out even more to the ones we love. Another very important job.

WHY WAIT IN A DOCTOR’S OFFICE WHEN CLINIC CONCIERGE COMES DIRECTLY TO YOU? WELCOME TO CLINIC CONCIERGE, AN INNOVATIVE HOUSE CALL SERVICE OFFERING CUSTOMIZED HEALTH CARE WITH HIGHLY TRAINED PROVIDERS.

ARTICLE BY DAVE MUSCARI

20

D E PAILY FAM RT CA M ERNET || HEALTH CATEG ORY + W E LLNE S S

Clinic Concierge is an idea whose time has come. The private pay house-call practice started in Dallas last spring. It offers an impressive number of services such as sick visits for all ages, cosmetic injection, travel COVID testing, IV hydration, preop clearance, employment physicals, and more. Visits can be via Telehealth or in the privacy and relaxed comfort of patients’ own homes, offices, or wherever they choose to schedule it. Clinic Concierge is the brainchild of co-founders Lauren Payne and Shayla Dunlap. Both are experienced Nurse Practitioners who had worked in medicine for years. They saw, first-hand, patients’ needs evolving, specifically around the quality and convenience of care. “The people we reach value their time and need more of it in their lives,” explains Lauren. “This is one way of giving them more time by making necessary medical experiences more easily accessible.” The two business partners launched Clinic Concierge last spring, differentiating themselves in an interesting variety of ways. “Most concierge doctors require some kind of annual, membership fee,” said Lauren. “Now they don’t actually come to you -- the fee just gives you access to see them.” In the case of Clinic Concierge, there are no such fees. “It’s an a la carte service, designed to be used as needed,” explains Shayla. “And you don’t have to be a member.”

“Another differentiator is that we only come to a client’s home, or where it’s convenient,” added Lauren. All of Clinic Concierge’s providers are board-certified Family or Pediatric Nurse Practitioners along with highly trained Registered Nurses. "We don’t even have an actual clinic space – we travel to you.” Much like the care associated with generational family doctors, medical bags in hand, making house calls, Clinic Concierge is a refreshing throwback wrapped in smart, contemporary techniques. “We have our kit, supplies, and our backpacks, driving around in our cars and coming directly to patients’ doors ready to help.” Breathing treatments, injection medication, common prescriptions, vaccines, and more are all available. The company takes pride in the customized and detailed care they can give to each patient because they have ample time to spend at each concierge visit. CONTINUED >

“If you call our phone number it goes to Lauren, and if you email us it goes to me,” says Shayla. “The booking app on our website is also simple to navigate. No matter how you contact us, you’re always talking directly to a professional health provider.” While they cover a significant area geographically in DFW, the Park Cities is the hub of Clinic Concierge’s business. “Our primary focus is quality care and convenience, a luxury service that’s tailored to the needs of each patient,” says Shayla. “And they routinely say, ‘Well, that was easy’ a lot,” added Lauren. “I was just at a patient’s house giving her Botox, and she commented, ‘I haven’t gotten my flu shot yet.’ I told her, ‘I have flu shots here. We can do that now as well.’” Why sit in a doctor’s office when you can get care from a trained Nurse Practitioner with a treatment plan, and V.I.P. care in your home?

“Our primary focus is quality care and convenience, a luxury service that’s tailored to the needs of each patient,”

GO WITH THE

BEING OPEN-MINDED TO HYPNOSIS MIGHT BE JUST THE THING TO ESCAPE MENTAL BLOCKS AND REACH YOUR GOALS.

FLOW

ARTICLE BY KATIE BEVAN PHOTOGRAPHY BY GRANT MILLER

M EN TA L WE LLB E IN G | H E ALTH + W E LLNE S S

When you walk into The Flow Center, located right off the Tollway in North Dallas, you immediately feel transported to a calming environment. It seems more like a spa, as soothing scents fill the air, tranquil sounds echo through the space and you are enveloped in soothing blue hues. Valerie Grimes, Certified Clinical Hypnotist, has created a place where her clients can come and let go of their preconceived notions and worries. The large painting on the wall in the welcome area features something like the full view of an iceberg. “This painting was suggested by the designer of the office because of the colors,” says Valerie. “But I realized after a few years that it was really the perfect representation of the mind. A small portion that is visible, and a much deeper and larger portion that is hidden. I help people access that hidden part.” When you hear the word “hypnosis” you probably have something pop up in your head - usually goofy or fake. The art of hypnosis dates back to the 18th century and the phrase hypnosis was coined in the 1840s. The American Medical Association recognized hypnosis as a legitimate treatment method in both medicine and dentistry in 1958. In the here and now, it’s a transformative treatment to assist people in getting out of their current way of thinking and responding. Putting it simply, hypnosis is a highly relaxed and natural state of mind. When we talk about wellbeing, it has become increasingly important to focus not only on the body, but the mind. Mental health awareness is growing and people from all walks of life athletes, actors, teachers - are working to take away the stigma from getting help. Therapy, medication, and other forms of self-care are all ways to start prioritizing your mind’s health. But what if you’re looking for something natural, new or nothing else has worked? You just might benefit from a practice that creates focused attention, heightened suggestibility and can be highly effective when it comes to changing habits, especially habits of thought. Valerie has been practicing hypnotherapy for more than 20 years, and draws from her own difficult life experiences and an understanding of human behavior. The Flow Center has now grown to include Valerie and 2 associates so that they may serve a range of clients six days a week, including children and seniors. Your first session starts with simply getting to know you and understanding your motivation for wanting assistance. Why are you seeking out hypnotherapy in the first place and what else is going on in your life? Clients can be referred to Valerie through other therapists or can find The Flow Center through a search of their own. Very often, though, her clients are people who have tried everything else. They are searching for solutions to anxiety, alcohol dependency and trouble sleeping. They want to stop smoking, lose weight or reach their goals and can’t seem to do it successfully, long-term, on their own. “Clients that come to The Flow Center may be nervous or doubtful, but a lot of them are at the point where they need something to work, so they are pretty open-minded,” says Valerie. This open mindset is key for people coming to experience hypnotherapy - a closed mind or a view that it “won’t work” doesn’t allow a chance for success. And there is a specific science behind why this can be successful.

Our mind is composed of two parts: the conscious and the subconscious. Our conscious mind is logical and contemplative. It is where judgement, deliberation and acceptance occur. The subconscious is more primal; it avoids pain and likes pleasure. It deals in feelings, memories, habits and beliefs. At The Flow Center, they combine centuries-old hypnotic practices with modern-day neuroscience to tap into the subconscious to create beliefs that lead to new habits and lasting life changes, helping clients reach their full potential. Once it’s time to begin the actual hypnotherapy, you go into another office, which is just as calming, and settle into a recliner. Blankets are available and you get yourself comfortable. Even if you feel awkward or don’t know what to do, Valerie is an incredible support system. “Ok, let’s begin with eyes closed,” Valerie begins, “and those closed eyes send such a powerful message to your body that it’s time to create something new. A new mindset.” Her voice guides you into a place of relaxation as she begins to instruct you on what to think about and offer suggestions to your unconscious mind that are productive and purposeful. Clients are completely aware of what is being said and what their responses are. Every night before you fall asleep, your brain cycles

28

M EN TA L WE LLB E IN G | H E ALTH + W E LLNE S S

down through four stages of consciousness; beginning in Beta, transitioning through Alpha and Theta and ending in Delta where you are almost completely unaware and deepest into your subconscious. Hypnosis happens in a sweet spot between Alpha and Theta. When in these states, the subconscious mind is able to receive new confidence-building ideas and suggestions that can assist them in defeating old habits. When awakening from the hypnotic state, clients feel as though they’ve napped and are refreshed. If you are a yogi, the feeling in your body is similar to that of a great savasana. Valerie’s clients aren’t long-term. Hypnotherapy rewires your brain within a finite number of sessions. “After assessing a client, I typically recommend a number of sessions between 3 or 7 and reaching a max around 9 or so,” says Valerie. “And then I teach a self-hypnosis practice for my clients to continue to work on in their own time, between sessions and after we finish our work together.” One thing is certain. Valerie’s voice does wonders for stress all on its own. You leave your session feeling positivity and lightness. So take a load off, and work through your own walls at The Flow Center.

The Cold Plunge

Dive Into The Wellness World’s Hottest (Actually, Coldest) Addition 30

H EA LT H Y LIF E ST Y LE | FITNE S S

Are you ready to take the plunge? It’s a question you may not have asked yourself before but will now. So what is “The Cold Plunge?” In short, it’s a brisk, three-minute immersion into a cold tub that triggers the body into a state of regulation, greatly improving levels of energy, mental and physical strength and blood circulation. The profound effects of The Plunge can impact your overall health, from reducing chronic pain and inflammation to boosting metabolism and focus and creating better sleep and mental clarity. Co-founded by two entrepreneurs who bonded over their love for health and business, Ryan Duey and Mike Garrett found a friendship and created a vision to rejuvenate people. Two to three minutes a day of plunging into 39-55 degrees of cold water stimulates the mind, body and soul and sets your day into optimistic motion. In a short 12 months, The Cold Plunge quickly garnered attention as a result of organic growth, wellness influencers who embraced the product, and a pandemic that forced people to focus on their health and added time at home. It’s also worth noting that the likes of Tony Hawk and Kerri Walsh Jennings swear by their cold plunges for their athletic recovery. The goal with the cold water is to lower your core body temperature, and it takes time to do that. “Water cools your body at 25 times what cold air does. Cold water is the quickest activation to do it.” Ryan shares his sentiment on doing something uncomfortable first thing in the morning to make the biggest, most positive impact on your day. What you can expect to feel is, “I did something first thing in the morning that I didn’t want to do, but I know it is good for me.” Cold plunging can be done daily or multiple times a day. It’s all about getting people to explore what works for them. They may offer up recommendations, but ultimately it’s you building a relationship with your cold plunge. Many like the morning plunge, others enjoy nighttime. For some, it cools the body down resulting in better sleep. The Cold Plunge offers four different models, all the same size, all cold at 39-55 degrees, and one that can turn into a hot tub at 103 degrees. The heat can be great for clients in really cold environments. There is also an app to control the temperature via bluetooth. You can find The Cold Plunge at thecoldplunge.com and @the.coldplunge on Instagram.
