Time is a funny thing. Twenty-four issues went by in the blink of an eye, but at the same time, it feels like we have been gratefully serving our community for a long time. For more than a century, holidays at The Adolphus have embodied luxury. Nestled in the heart of Downtown Dallas, this hotel with unparalleled local history has treated guests to elegant accommodations and extraordinary service. Opened in October 1912, the project was driven by AnheuserBusch co-founder Adolphus Busch.

“He viewed Dallas then much the way we see it today: dynamic, energetic, and progressive— with a pioneering spirit,” says Sam Tucker, Area Director of Sales and Marketing at The Adolphus. “He recognized it would grow into a major hub for commerce, business, and travel.” At one time the hotel’s lobby was a famous dinner theater, operating from the 1930s until the 1960s. It featured the Ice Capades with Olympic skater and choreographer Dot Franey and was accompanied by an orchestra. “It housed a radio station, liquor store, pharmacy, and a bakery that produced more baked goods than any other commercial enterprise in Dallas,” Tucker explains. Today, The Adolphus remains a global gem, recognized with impressive honors including the AAA Four Diamond Award, as well as U.S. News and World Report’s Best Hotels in the U.S. This season, the hotel’s holiday festivities start December 2 with a number of exciting opportunities to enjoy The Adolphus in all her lavish splendor, including the Great Tree Lighting ceremony. The next morning there is a ballroom children’s breakfast with Santa before the annual Dallas Christmas Parade just down the street, which was started by the hotel in 1987. A Winter Village transforms the rooftop into a themed wonderland with six holiday cabins bedecked in whimsical décor and offering holiday menus. “Sample new culinary offerings at City Hall Bistro or book a session in the luxurious Spa Adolphus,” Tucker suggests. “Our 1912 Body Experience is a perfect way to wind down around the stress that can accompany the commotion of the holidays.”

One of the most revered traditions in town returns to the grand hotel: Holiday tea in the elegant French Room is a lovely seasonal ritual that continues through January 8. Served with pastries and special menus, the time-honored tradition of tea at The French Room is a refined experience. “It’s the only restaurant in Texas to maintain an AAA Five Diamond Award for 25 consecutive years,” Tucker says. Additionally, the hotel is presenting a limited-time, dinner-only series in the French Room this year called Be Our Guest Chef. “These pop-up style, ticketed dinners feature celebrity chefs and elevated menus in the state’s most beloved dining room,” Tucker adds. A special holiday tea service will take place on December 23 and Christmas Eve featuring the holiday tea menu complemented by Victorian carolers, photos around the Great Tree, and a gift. And the spirit of the hotel’s original mission lives on. In a telegram to the President of the Dallas Chamber of Commerce, dated March 9, 1911, Adolphus Busch wrote: “I sincerely hope that this new palace will be a source of pride and pleasure to all concerned and may be another step in the movement for a greater Dallas.” “I think that really says it all,” Tucker says. “We feel certain Mr. Busch would be immensely proud we are carrying on this great tradition of Texas hospitality in his name.”

We asked Dickinson to share her process for hand-picking the delightful—and often delectable—assortment of local items for each luxury box, and tested a few products (hint: microchip cookies) along the way.

PARK CITIES LIFESTYLE: WHAT IS YOUR PROCESS FOR FINDING ITEMS? Theresa Dickinson: We truly take pride and carefully choose every single item we include in our gifting. We always sample every product before making a final decision. Currently, I am absolutely loving our holiday collection. When choosing products and curating each box, I put myself in the position of the recipient, knowing it is something I would love to receive. I always make sure the products we carry contain ingredients that I fully support. For example: White Rock Soap Gallery uses extremely clean ingredients and that I just love.

With a practice specializing in areas including restorative and cosmetic dentistry for adults, Dr. David Brumbaugh is a believer in the importance of patient education. “It’s paramount,” he says. “We clearly explain issues, if any, then discuss options, pros and cons, allowing patients to make informed decisions.”

Brumbaugh’s patients come from “all walks of life,” he says, as well as a variety of locations, a tribute to the many referrals received during his 23 years in practice. “We truly appreciate both our patient family and their time,” Brumbaugh adds. “I don’t jump from room to room seeing multiple patients, you are my focus for the duration of your visit.” A Fort Worth native, Brumbaugh graduated from The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston-Dental Branch, then opened his practice in 2000. While growing up, Brumbaugh spent a lot of time with his family dentist and physician, even shadowing their daily routines. “Over time, I realized that I liked the idea of seeing and getting to know patients over an extended period of time, not just for a single treatment,” Brumbaugh says. “It is a great feeling getting to see families grow, enjoying the wisdom and life stories from my older patients to seeing children grow up and graduate from college. As a specialist, I would not have that opportunity.” Growing up in Tarrant County, Brumbaugh says he was familiar with Dallas and all the local landmarks. After dental school, he felt the city’s personality, expanding business climate, excellent housing market, and cultural presence would allow him to start and grow the type of dental practice he envisioned having. Today, Brumbaugh is well known for his dedication, innovations, and huge heart for patients, particularly those dealing with anxiety about dentistry. His practice offers the most proven and beneficial advances in laser dentistry using the Solea CO2 laser. This laser device allows the patient to have dental treatment without the need to get a shot. “Maximum results with minimum discomfort,” Brumbaugh says. He utilizes nitrous oxide and is trained and licensed in the administration of IV sedation, allowing patients to feel completely at ease during their dental treatment. CONTINUED >

Such progressive methods combined with a caring approach have solidified Brumbaugh’s reputation in the community, which he calls “a rewarding personal and professional journey.” For Brumbaugh and his staff, connecting with the community they serve is also a significant element of the practice: “We all give back throughout the year,” Brumbaugh says. In November, the practice gave to the nonprofit Operation Turkey, a charity with a presence in eight states including Texas. “For over 20 years it has remained 100% volunteer-driven without a single paid employee,” Brumbaugh says, adding that it delivers more than 75,000 hot meals on Thanksgiving Day in Dallas. Collectively, Brumbaugh and his staff have also volunteered for Carter Blood Bank, AdoptA-Neighborhood, Save A Smile, North Texas Food Bank, Salvation Army, SPCA, Texas Mission of Mercy, The Shepard’s House, Dallas Life and Meals on Wheels. “I feel a personal obligation to try and help those that don’t have the ability to help themselves,” Brumbaugh says. Brumbaugh adds that there are certain experiences that stand alone: “Providing donated dental services to veterans,” he says. “People who’ve fought to protect our freedoms, many of whom are injured, physically and/or mentally. These selfless people should not have to suffer with oral issues that can be easily fixed.”

Salt dough, or dough art as we refer to it in our family, is a simple, yet beautiful way to adorn spaces around the holidays. Making salt dough ornaments is a holiday tradition that we have been doing since I was a kid in the ‘80s, but the process has been around even longer than that.

S N O W F L A K E O R N A ME N T S The use of salt dough is as old as dirt, or I guess I should say as old as clay. Even so, salt dough has made a comeback in recent years, and for good reason—it only requires three ingredients, and the festive end product will last for years to come. We still pull out the salt dough ornaments I made as a kid and place them on our tree each year. I love that old traditions can live throughout the decades as we find ways to reinvent them with modern-day trends. That is exactly what I did here with these lovely snowflake salt dough ornaments. I hope you follow along to make some yourself this holiday season.

S A LT D O U G H RECIPE *Makes about 12 ornaments

SUPPLIES NEEDED • Rolling pin • Cookie cutters (optional) • Plastic or metal straw • Cookie sheet • Parchment paper • Lettered stamps • Acrylic sealer • Bakers twine

INGREDIENTS • 1 cup All Purpose white flour • ½ cup table salt • ½ cup water (give or take) • 4oz white acrylic paint

STEP-BY-STEP 1. Mix together flour and salt. Add ¼ cup water and paint (if you want a white dough, otherwise you may leave it out). Stir to mix. If needed, slowly add more water until you reach a pizza dough consistency. Finally, remove dough from the bowl and knead on a floured surface until all ingredients are fully incorporated. Add more flour if too sticky, add more water if too dry. 2. To make ornaments, use a rolling pin to roll dough to ½ to ¼ inch thick. Use a cookie cutter to create snowflake shapes. Use a straw to poke a hole at the top of each snowflake to allow a space to thread your twine after baking.

3. Place ornaments on parchment lined baking sheets. Bake at 200 degrees Fahrenheit for 2 hours until dry. Flip ornaments every 30 minutes for a faster bake. 4. Once cooled, add decorative touches with lettered stamps, acrylic paint or Sharpie markers. Finally, spray one side of the ornament with an acrylic seal. Let dry, flip and spray the other side. 5. Once dried completely, thread twine through the hole created before baking. Hang from your tree or add to your gift boxes as gift tags. + 1 box red velvet cake mix, plus ingredients called for on box + 2 (8-oz.) blocks cream cheese, softened + 1/2 cup powdered sugar + 2 tablespoon. heavy cream + 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

1. Preheat oven to 350º and line a muffin pan with cupcake liners. Prepare red velvet cake batter according to box directions. Divide batter among liners and bake until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean, 18 to 20 minutes. Let cool completely. Break 4 cupcakes into small crumbs. Save remaining cakes for another use. 2. In a large bowl using a hand mixer, beat cream cheese and powdered sugar until light and fluffy. Add heavy cream and vanilla and beat until stiff peaks form. 3. Line a large baking sheet with parchment. Using a small cookie scoop, scoop cream cheese mixture into balls and place on prepared baking sheet. Transfer to the freezer to chill, 1 hour. 4. Roll balls in red velvet cake crumbs until fully coated, then return to prepared baking sheet. Refrigerate until ready to serve.

Giving Campaign Now in its third year, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign will give away $300,000 this holiday season to help individual community members who would benefit from a helping hand during their time of need. But they need YOUR HELP to make it happen! Maybe you know of a single parent struggling to provide, an elderly person who has experienced loss, a child enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need—even if nobody else does. To preserve and protect the dignity of every recipient, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized in ANY way. (Even those who nominate others may remain anonymous if they choose.) Last year, City Lifestyle was able to give to more than 70 recipients all over the country by sending checks in the mail through New Year’s Eve. (This year, the goal is to double that number with checks ranging in amount up to $3,000 each.) With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.” Together with Matthew Perry, Chief Sales Officer, Steven adds that the outpouring and gratitude from the recipients was overwhelming and affirmed that this is a tradition they want to continue. “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success,” Matthew adds, “so we in turn want to be a blessing to others.” City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep doing it on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is so rewarding that it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster that culture of generosity.”
