In the month of November, sentiments of gratitude are inescapable. It’s that time of year when it seems everyone is up to something good. Give here, donate there—volunteer for this, support that. And I love it! What better time of year to give thanks than before the hustle and bustle that December brings? This year, I’ve been conflicted. On the whole, my cup runneth over: I had a baby, moved into a new house, and kept busy in my professional career. And yet, I’ve been feeling stressed: with 3 kids, relocation logistics, and working nights and weekends. As a writer, I look forward to penning this note because it forces me to reflect. And in writing this, I felt absurd and ungrateful. I have a family that loves me and friends who support me; I’m valued at work and have a new roof over my head. A few years ago, I kept a gratitude journal for a month, writing down one thing each day for which I was grateful. It’s a wonderful exercise that I highly recommend—if anything, just to remind yourself that it’s worth spending your love and energy on the people and things that bring you fulfillment and joy. It’s time to do that again. I’m so thankful for my family: my husband, our dog, and our three beautiful boys. I love our new home and neighborhood and am excited for the life we will build there. I’m beyond grateful to this publication and to our publishers, Rod and Ann Marie Patten. At a time when I was making some career changes, they welcomed me to Park Cities Lifestyle and have supported me ever since. And I cannot forget some key contributors to this publication that are absolutely fabulous at what they do: Katie Bevan, Alyssa Jeandron, Grant Miller, Dave Muscari, Mary King-Moore, and Cynthia Smoot. Sometimes writing it out or saying it aloud really helps; how we frame the situation often makes all the difference. So, take some time this month to reflect. Remember, come December, you won’t have the time!

Dallas has a reputation as one of the nation’s most philanthropic metropolitan areas for good reason. The annual North Texas Day of Giving in September put $62,656,273 into the coffers of 3,351 DFW nonprofits. As the saying goes, everything is bigger and better in Texas. It is this unique brand of big-hearted humanitarianism that has fueled local charitable giving for years. Here, we highlight just a few examples.

Tal Thevenot of AquaTerra, which specializes in creating unique outdoor living environments, supports Spirit of a Hero, a local nonprofit dedicated to assisting critically wounded veterans. For example, the entire company worked on a project building a functional backyard for wounded war hero Cpl. Brian Aft, a double amputee. “SOAH wanted wheelchair accessibility, but we delivered an outdoor kitchen, gardening beds, landscaping, and lighting,” Thevenot says. “Our vendors and 100% of our employees helped, it was overwhelming.”

For custom fire pit designer and builder Tim Green of Boom Atomic, giving back comes in the form of Leia’s Kids, a childhood cancer charity that supports families with kids ages newborn to 18, often terminally diagnosed, with financial donations, hosting “crown parties,” and messages of comfort and hope. Services include airline tickets, overnight stays at hospitals and hotels, food and supplies, emotional support, and special events for kids and their families. “This is likely the most rewarding aspect of our business,” Green says. “Nothing is more important than paying forward our blessings.” CONTINUED > NOVEMB ER 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . Clinic Concierge co-founder Lauren Payne and her staff are devoted supporters of Magdalen House. Since 1987, the Dallas chapter has helped thousands of women achieve sobriety and sustain recovery from alcoholism. It’s the only local agency to offer comprehensive recovery services, without insurance or state funding, free of charge. “As a woman-owned business, we love supporting other women through the struggles and hardships to help them get to the other side of sobriety and empowerment,” Payne says. “It’s a joy to give back.”

HeadFirst Counseling was founded by Lauren McLaughlin for children, adolescents, adults, and parents as an alternative to stuffy, formal therapy offices. She’s also launching a new nonprofit: The HeadFirst Mental Health Initiative is aimed at reducing the burden of the mental health crisis in Dallas through funding public education on best practices, community outreach, and supplying free therapy services for families and children who otherwise could not afford to pay.

grand love Making A Difference To Encourage And Support Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Grandparents are increasingly assuming the role of raising their grandchildren due to families’ crises, including incarcerations, military deployments and other life-altering circumstances. When longtime Prosper community leaders Ray and Lena Smith saw the serious challenges encountered by grandparents on fixed incomes in these situations, they took action to assist by establishing the Grand Love nonprofit in 2019. Lena says Grand Love raises funds to help grandparents who are unexpectedly handling delayed retirement, navigating school systems, bridging generational gaps, finding mental health resources and working through court systems — all due to devoting themselves to parental responsibilities for grandchildren. Both of the Smiths fully understand how vital it is to have ample cash flow to raise children, as they personally experienced becoming parents all over again by adopting their grandsons. Ray serves as Farmers Bank president, and has been the mayor of Prosper for the past 15 years. Lena is an innovative North Texas real estate specialist who “believes nothing is impossible.” Shannon Mason, Grand Love director of operations, says the number of related family situations keeps surging as she highlights the following national US statistics: • More than 3 million grandparents are the sole providers for their grandchildren.

• 8-10 million grandparents are primary providers. • 1.7 million single grandmothers are the sole provider (49% are unemployed). • 25% of these heroes fall below the poverty line. • 25% of these grandparents are disabled. “For every child in the state foster programs, there are 25 being raised by grandparents or other relatives, saving taxpayers $6 billion per year in Texas alone,” says Shannon. Grand Love aids grandparents by providing food, utility assistance and holiday assistance. Grand Summer is a program that assists with sending grandchildren to camps. Grand Scholarships provide financial assistance to send grandchildren to college. Grand Arts sponsors can adopt a “grand family” by providing a one-time or monthly support for grandchildren to pursue the arts through classes or camps, including music, dance, theater, drawing and painting. Shannon says the nonprofit also needs lawyers, therapists, tutors, doctors, dentists and orthodontists willing to bless these families with their volunteer expertise and services. For four days every November, the Chi Omega Christmas Market helps supercharge holiday shopping. Since the 1970s, this philanthropic event has been a jumpstart for holiday shoppers, with an admirable history of supporting local charities in the process. With origins that date back nearly a half-century, the annual market has become a seasonal tradition in Dallas. This year, it’s back with new vendors, exciting ideas, and wonderful products to fuel the organization’s largest philanthropic effort—all under one roof. The 45th edition of Chi Omega Christmas Market will open its doors November 16–19 in the Automobile Building exhibit hall at Fair Park. “You can find anything from a pencil to a fur coat,” co-chair Karen Dower says. “Clothing, jewelry at all price points, accessories, toys, books, gifts for children, plus holiday decorations.” Jamie Hare is a Dallas sales executive (and Chi Omega alum) who has attended the market for more than a decade with the same four friends, collecting “cute clothes, personalized gifts, and stocking stuffers,” she says. Same with Shannon Dawson. She’s logged five-plus years with a favorite co-worker on opening night. “It’s a tradition,” Dawson says. “We go together and try to knock out presents for colleagues and clients, have cocktails, and always run into friends and compare finds.” One of the elements that makes the Chi Omega Christmas Market special is the years of volunteerism. “We don’t have a membership requirement to work the event,” Dower explains. Susan Portwood is also a Chi Omega alum (Auburn, 1974) who lives in Plano. A market veteran, she suggests taking four hours to walk the floor. “If you see something you know you want, buy it immediately,” she says. “It’ll likely be gone if you wait.” CONTINUED >

The Chi Omega Christmas Market began in 1978 with less than 50 booths at the City Hall Dallas Convention Center. It’s been a winning formula, and after so many years, the event is distinctly multi-generational. “This year we have committee co-chairs that range from 27 to 77, blending the talents of our entire membership into one event,” Dower says. “Our 2020 chairs were a mother and her two daughters. A pair of identical twins co-chaired back-toback markets in 2018 and 2019.” Dower says the Chi Omega Christmas Market is the only such show in America organized by a Chi Omega group and is considered the organization’s largest annual philanthropic event. “Now, at the 44-year mark, we’ve distributed $9.6 million to over 136 nonprofit agencies,” says Dower, including neo-natal rooms, women’s shelters, a poison control center, scholarships, and many more. She adds the market owns many impressive benchmarks: “In 2019, when we raised $560,000 for charities in Dallas and continued the trend of touching as many as 15 charities in 2020 and 2021.” General admission tickets are sold at area Tom Thumb stores and are available online at chiomegaxmas.org, as well as at the door. “There is a special Mother’s Room for those with infants,” Dower adds. “And Santa will be there and available for pictures.” Other charities impacted include RISE Adaptive Sports for special needs children, and Mommies and Me, based at Parkland Hospital. The Wesley Rankin Center, which bridges the gaps in education, the arts, and mental health, is slated as a 2022 beneficiary, along with the Make-AWish Foundation and more.

• Build a menu around the season. “In November, people crave turkey, sage stuffing and cranberry sauce,” Chef Kyle says. “Autumn dinners mean bigger-course meals with varied proteins, like turkey, duck and sirloin, hearty starches, and good fall produce, especially root vegetables such as butternut squash and pumpkin.” • Always greet guests with a beverage and appetizers. “Offer champagne for wine-lovers or a sparkling drink or signature cocktail. It’s all about serving guests to the highest caliber,” Kyle says. • Draw inspiration from the season’s changing colors, cooler temps and lower humidity to move back outdoors. “Think flannel blankets, wooden tables, fire pits, open grills, string lights and candles to create a really cool environment you haven’t been able to do all summer.” • “You can’t go wrong with fresh flowers,” Hannah says, “but keep bouquets low to not interfere with conversation flowing. For fall, I like richer, jewel-toned florals to mix and match and keep whimsical. I vary glass vases with burnished brass for warm fall vibes.” • An easy but thoughtful detail is to put a simple menu at each place setting, so guests know what to expect. “Add a pen, so guests can jot tasting notes, especially for wine pairings or multiple courses,” Hannah says. “Guests can share comments, then take the menu home as a sweet reminder of the event.” • Follow the French principle of mise en place or everything in place before your event. “This is actually our company’s name,” Kyle says. “It’s that important to us. Make sure the wines are all open, cocktails are pre-made, place settings are out, candles are lit and music is playing. When guests arrive, it gives that wow-factor and shows you intentionally made them feel special.” • To build confidence as a host, start small and practice. “Keep the menu and guest list small,” Kyle says. “Choose recipes you already have confidence in. If you make a great Beef Stroganoff, then go with that. Wine Pairing

According to Savor & Swirl, wine pairing doesn’t need to be overly complicated for a casual outdoor dinner party. Have a lighter and fuller body style of white and red available with some sparkling thrown in. “Lighter to medium-bodied wines from Rhône Valley, Italy or California would be a good place to start,” they state. “Viognier is one of our favorite wines that goes great with fall-inspired cuisines. Pinot Noir wine goes great with just about any food. Lean towards California or Willamette Valley for a new-world style and go with France for a more earthy, old-world style. A big bold Napa Cab would fall in perfectly for the grilled ribeye steak! Cheers!”
