I am particularly blessed with the women in my life. I spent my early years with my Grandmother living full time with us. She was my protector and caregiver from a very rambunctious older brother while my parents both worked. My mother was a force of nature, a teacher, a business owner, and unrelenting supporter of her children and grandchildren. I clearly remember her telling us all we can do anything

entire clan. That is giving it all. Without knowing it at the time, it is was these women showing and teaching me to give it all that made a difference in my life. There were several critical times when I had to tap into that unconditional love and focus on the one thing that had to be done. Failure was only an option after truly giving it my all. And thanks to their love and support my all has always been enough.

an email list, as well as going on many podcasts to chat about how to be a female entrepreneur. The course took off, and with its success, Michelle started teaching the same content via video calls. “The first lesson is all about finding your own voice,” says Michelle. “And the rest of the course is telling the women, soup to nuts, this is what you need to run a successful interior design business. The feedback I received was that the course was awesome, but that these designers were ready for more!” THEY SAY BEHIND EVERY GREAT MAN IS A GREAT WOMAN.

lot harder than I imagined.” The idea for formalizing a way to give back to other women who wanted to start their own interior design business came well into the success of Michelle’s own interiors firm. “When I was out of town to adopt my daughter, my team rarely, if ever, called me,” says Michelle. “They told me that they just followed the processes and procedures we have in place and can answer their own questions. So then I went into maternity leave knowing that what we had created in my business was working.” So the summer that her daughter was born, Michelle began building the platform to educate other women. She struggled naming the business and went through several rebrands before Designed for the Creative Mind® was settled upon. Now came the hard part - creating the content. “I put together an outline that was huge,” says Michelle. “This is going to be like the Encyclopedia Britannica - no one will want to do all this. So I broke it down and ended up creating a 6-week digital course. Just the basics.” Between her already robust following for ML Interiors Group and her friends in the industry, Michelle started promoting her new endeavor through social media. She gave away content and built up

SHARING THE BOSS BABE MENTALITY (CONTINUED)

“I show these women that it can be done because I’m currently in the design trenches,” says Michelle. “Once they see that it can be done, then all bets are off. I’m the Sherpa of the interior design business. I am going to guide you. Tell you what to pack - don’t step over here because you’ll slide down.” As Michelle shares her passion with these women, it is truly evident that she just wants others to be successful. ML Interiors Group Michelle’s biggest message is not technical business acumen or tricks of the trade, it’s that you are worth more than any money is. “You are a child of God, you change peoples lives,” Michelle tells her mentees. “You create a refuge for other people - how can you not value that?” “I have to remind people that this is not just about fluffing pillows and picking out paints,” says Michelle. “Oftentimes, we, as women, are just good at this sort of thing, so we don’t think of it as a valued service. I have to teach these women how to educate their clients of all that their services entail. This is a professional, luxury service. Just because it might be easy for these women, or fun, doesn’t mean it’s not worth the money they deserve to be earning.” Women tend to naturally be people pleasers and caretakers, so Michelle teaches them to set boundaries. “Don’t take texts at 8:30 at night with design questions. Not every person that calls you is going to be your client, and that’s ok.” Michelle also values the relationships that have blossomed because of Designed for the Creative Mind. The social media groups for the program are a great place for the women to come together, especially during the pandemic. She herself has developed close friendships through her business as well.

is thriving and growing, and Designed with a Creative Mind is growing every day as well. In fact, Michelle just launched a podcast for the program to share the knowledge with even more women! “This is why I get out of bed in the morning,” says Michelle of her work with other interior designers. “This is not work to me. And these designers can now, in turn, go out and help people create beautiful homes. Giving back becomes a ripple effect.”

“It brings me such joy. This is where God wants me. I’ve always wanted to serve women, but I thought I would be helping younger women. Instead, I’m serving women who want to be business women.”

Neighbors Helping Neighbors DISASTROUS TIME SPARKS TREMENDOUS COMMUNITY SUPPORT

DURING THE CATASTROPHIC DALLAS SNOWSTORM IN FEBRUARY, EASTSIDE MODERN TOOK ACTION TO TAKE CARE OF THEIR HOMELESS NEIGHBORS KNOWING THE STORM WOULD BE TO MUCH TO HANDLE. Their swift thinking and selfless deeds allowed for their neighbors to survive the storm with the help from many incredible donors. EASTSIDE MODERN DID AN AMAZING THING. HOW DID YOU GET THE IDEA IN THE FIRST PLACE? When we first heard about the storm coming in, we were initially concerned about a good friend of ours who works a couple days a week in our warehouse, refinishing furniture for us, who actually lives in the homeless camp nearby. It honestly kept us up at night thinking about him being stuck out in the cold. WHAT DID YOU FEEL YOU NEEDED TO DO FOR YOUR GOOD FRIEND? We sat down with family and brainstormed ways we could help and ultimately, we decided we would book hotel rooms. At first, we hoped we could put up a few people for a couple nights. HOW WERE YOU ABLE TO SPREAD THE WORD SO FAST? We started a GoFundMe page to offset the cost and shared it with our Instagram followers. We were truly amazed by the amount of people who wanted to help. We surpassed our fundraising goal of $3,000 within an hour and before we knew it, we had raised $30,000. At that point we knew we had the resources to help more people than we initially thought. 22

GIVING BACK

Jennifer Troice Artist | Bronze Sculptures “As an artist, I feel personally compelled to put philanthropy at the heart of what I do. My first collection when I became a sculptor was titled “A Helping Hand”, inspired by the realization that as social beings, we only survive and thrive when we can count on each other. Discovering my talent for sculpting essentially felt like receiving a gift myself, quite suddenly in my teenage years, and it has been a priority for me to find opportunities to give back. Supporting the National Breast Cancer Foundation is my way of extending my helping hand, in the hope that my contribution can make a difference in people’s lives.”

Dr. Gunjan Kant Founding Member of Meditate Moms “I myself have practiced meditation for 20 years. It helps me connect to myself. We all go through a lot in life - things are not always smooth, but with meditation, you can remain centered. I have participated in the non-profit organization by the name of Sahaja Yoga Meditation for many years and in July we began “Meditation for Moms.” These are completely free, online programs for moms in all phases of life. Our volunteers knew this would be wonderful to offer virtually during the pandemic and our group kept evolving on this concept. I can completely understand because the world has turned upside down. The moms have challenging lives with a whole day at home. We do this for the community out of our desire for human to human connection, and helping these moms remain centered and balanced in these difficult times is a simple way to give back.”

C a r ly n R ay Glass Artist “I love working with glass, my mind, and my hands to create custom art. Glassblowing ignites the imagination, illustrates STEAM curriculum (STEM + Art), and offers life lessons. Four years ago, we started the nonprofit Art Reaching Out (ARO), which exposes under-resourced students to STEAMbased hands-on experiences through glass. Students witness the magic of hot glass, then make it themselves. Glass is an incredible material that teaches patience and being present while bringing chemistry, material science, technology, and engineering to life. I find learning, experimenting, and creating to be so fulfilling and love sharing my passion with others.”

Jan Osborn Founder at Dallas Doing Good “As I look back over my years in Dallas, there has been one thread that connects it all: good stories. Working with schools, nonprofits, and volunteers, I have seen remarkable people who have dedicated their lives to a cause and made our community stronger because of it. Dallas Doing Good is simply an extension of those inspiring stories. Through Dallas Doing Good we are able to highlight the leaders and organizations who are creating a long-lasting impact but may not have the chance to share about their journey or the effort it takes to solve the pressing issues that surround us. It is also a joy to help North Texans connect with a new cause and find people who share their same passion. Whether people are reading our stories on the Dallas Doing Good website, social media, or in our weekly email, I hope there is not only inspiration, but also a pathway to action.”

L i sa P e t t y Bryan’s House Committee Volunteer “Throughout my life in Dallas, I have heard about the work of Bryan’s House. For over 30 years, it has provided a truly remarkable range of services for at-risk kids with special needs and their families. That I can support Bryan’s House as a luncheon committee volunteer and upcoming Chair of the Jubilee Society right now is such an honor. As we all emerge from an incredibly challenging year, our Bryan’s House families need us now more than ever. The upcoming Pathways to Inclusion Luncheon, Awards, and Speaker Panel in September, and our fabulous digital raffle going on right now, are both wonderful ways to support this incredible organization.”

CULINARY CREATIONS ARTICLE CHRISTIANA NIELSON

COCK TAIL PART Y SPICE UP YOUR MOTHER’S DAY BRUNCH WITH THIS SMOKY WATERMELON LEMON MARGARITA MOTHER’S DAY BRUNCH IS A SPECIAL OCCASION EVEN AT HOME, SO WHY NOT CELEBRATE YOUR MOM WITH SOMETHING MORE EXCITING THAN THE BOTTLE OF WINE ON YOUR SHELF? This Smoky Watermelon Lemon Margarita from Half Baked Harvest is the perfect marriage of sweet and spicy — and it’s pretty to look at, too. But with bold flavors of mezcal, mint, and jalapeño mixed in with juicy watermelon, no one at brunch will be looking at it for long.

S M O K Y W AT E R M E L O N L E M O N M A R G A R I TA A refreshing blend of watermelon, lemon, jalapeño, mint, and mezcal

INGREDIENTS + 2-3 cups cubed watermelon + 2 ounces mezcal (or silver tequila)

+ ¼ cup sparkling water, for topping Chili lemon salt:

+ ½ ounce Cointreau

+ ¼ cup flaky sea salt

+ Juice from ½ lemon

+ 1 teaspoon chipotle chili powder

+ 4 fresh mint leaves, torn

+ 1 pinch granulated sugar

+ 1-2 jalapeño slices

+ Zest from 1 lemon

DIRECTIONS Prep time/total time: 10 minutes. Makes 1 serving. To make the watermelon juice, blend 2 cups cubed watermelon in a blender, then strain through a fine-mesh sieve into a pitcher. Store in the fridge for up to five days. To make the chili lemon salt, combine all the ingredients on a shallow plate, then rim your glass in salt. In a cocktail shaker or glass jar, add ¼ cup watermelon juice, mezcal, Cointreau, lemon juice, mint, and jalapeño slices. Fill with ice and shake until combined — the longer you shake, the spicier it will be. Strain into your prepared glass. Top with sparkling water. Garnish as desired with a watermelon wedge and fresh mint. Voila! 34
