Like many in my generation, my parents shared the same home town of Butler PA. Just north of Pittsburgh, it is a gritty steel town, tucked in a valley that had been home to many generations on both sides of my family. I never lived there, but it was home to my parents, my grandparents, many aunts and uncles, and scores of cousins. I remember waking up from the long drive from D.C. as we turned onto the brick paved South Main Street hill. The distinct noise and slight rumble of our sta-

tion wagon headed up the steep hill meant we were minutes away from my grandparents house on Christy Avenue. This was the first place that struck me as home. I think universally we can all say we spent more time at home than ever in 2020. My hope is that as we emerge from this pandemic and move back toward a more normal world, we don't lose what we have relearned about home. Many of us will now live and work from home either more or permanently. I personally love the commute from the kitchen for my morning coffee to my office. It is precisely six steps. Like many of you we have tweaked and changed things to make it more beautiful and functional, with more to come this year. I can't wait to fill it again with friends and family.

Paint Life Boldly!
Sometimes inspiration is in the “lost then found” moments in our lives. That’s often where I find my best inspiration — those moments where you discover beauty in creation — There’s beauty in the ‘everyday overlooked ‘ like in the wild garden growth I love to paint for example, or the beauty discovered in those rare serendipitous moments when crossing the path of wildlife in its natural habitat where I find inspiration, beauty and joy. In both my modern gardens and wildlife paintings I long for my brushstrokes and color palette to express the beautiful freedom in their uniqueness
Joy can always be found wherever we are when we open our eyes, look up from our iPhones, and take in the beauty and wonder of God’s creation that surrounds us, waiting for us to rediscover what we once lost....The beauty and joy in living in the moment. Those often are the “lost then found” moments that inspire me to paint experiential living. This is why my mantra is to “Paint Life Boldly!” - R E B E C C A P E L L E Y M C WAT T E R S

BY DESIGN GEORGE BASS IS A MASTER OF DESIGN. For nearly two decades, his home staging and interior design projects through George Bass Stage & Design have brought elegance, finesse, and artistry to Dallas homes. One of his latest projects, 4001 Normandy Ave., is no different. Filled with custom pieces and original art, warm tones and exquisite details, the sunlight-drenched Highland Park residence is a stunning tribute to Bass’ eye for aesthetics and dedication to design excellence, alongside Tex Batson, Aaron Portillo, and Paul Taylor, his design team. With every project, he aims to create emotional connection points with potential buyers — and the sublime connection points in these photographs speak for themselves.

Foyer: The classic Tudor-style house,
which was built in 1993, boasts an original staircase in the spacious foyer. To elevate the formal entry, Bass framed the doorway with two identical antique mirrors that brighten the room. He frequents local design shops, estate sales, and more to find unique decorative pieces.

Dining 1: The dining room, accented with floor-to-ceiling windows, was the ideal space for a large table and refined chairs. In addition to the furniture, Bass provided stunning custom art to adorn the walls. George Bass Stage & Design owns more than 3,000 pieces of art, and he chose modern works for this room to give it a sophisticated, updated ambience.

Dining 2: A great deal of preparation
happens behind the scenes as Bass and his team develop a vision for a home. “We bring in all of the furniture,” Bass says. “A lot of them are custom pieces. We put the look together. The lead stage designers and myself are included in the brainstorm in choosing the look and feel.”
Park Cities Lifestyle | March 2021
Wet Bar/Den 2: The tall corner plant and coffee table florals are high-grade faux versions of the real thing. “You can’t leave real plants inside of a stage home because no one will water them,” Bass says. “All of our plants, trees, and some floral arrangements come from Houston. They’re a high level of quality.” Wet Bar/Den 1: This room features an
original bar — during the house remodel, the designers carried the wood paneling theme throughout the space. In contrast to the rich wooden walls, Bass chose light, neutral furniture, custom decorative pillows, and a geometrically patterned rug from Feizy Rugs. He and his team pick color schemes that will enhance a home’s natural beauty.

Living 1: The focal point of the formal living room is a gorgeously detailed fireplace. “Every fireplace has its own personality,” Bass says. “Some need decorative items on them, and some don’t. It depends on the architectural style of the house.” In this case, Bass used flouted glass accents from Freedom Furniture & Design to draw a buyer’s eye to the fireplace and set the tone for the space. He also added a pop of color to the center of the room with a faux pink orchid, custom-made by floral designer Shane Burroughs. Living 2: Directly across from the fireplace is a plush custom sofa from Uphold Designs, set atop a large Feizy rug. Above the sofa hangs original contemporary-style art from Johnson Keith Gallery in the Design District. Bass says the clean, fresh colors they chose blend together well and offset the ceiling’s ornamental crown molding. “We [merge] modern art and modern accessories with classic pieces of furniture with tufting to counterbalance the classic aesthetics of the home,” he says.
08
Living 3: Bass says that, after a staging project
like this one is completed, around 30% of buyers purchase the home as is — including all the furniture, art, and decorative items he and his team carefully curated and arranged. For others, Bass’ design prowess serves as inspiration, which is precisely what it is meant to do. “A lot of people are not visionaries,” he says. “Once they can see what can be done, it clicks. They then understand what they can do with their own furniture.” CityLifestyle.com/ParkCities

MR. CLEAN WITH JOSH’S POOL SERVICE, OWNER AND NATIVE TEXAN JOSH HOLDEN IS GIVING DALLAS POOLS THE WHITE-GLOVE TREATMENT.
A POOL BRINGS A SENSE OF COMMUNITY TO A HOME. It provides an outlet for friends and family to spend time together while relishing the great outdoors. Perhaps no one knows that better than Josh Holden, a sixth-generation Texan whose business — and life — revolves around taking care of pools and making sure they’re ready for Dallas residents to enjoy. Holden, who grew up in West Texas, attended the University of Texas, and then lived in Houston for 10 years before moving to Dallas three years ago, started his career in oil and gas. But after making the move to Dallas, he became interested in the pool industry. After all, pools provide more than just community to Texans — they offer a respite from the heat. He learned the ropes while working at a North Texas pool business for a few years, and at the beginning of last year, he started his own: Josh’s Pool Service. Although his ability to do in-person networking was limited due to the pandemic, he persisted in getting the word out about his new business. “I’m a people person,” Holden says. “I work hard. I hustle.” In reality, it turned out that 2020 was a great year to establish a pool cleaning company, as people stayed home much more than they might have otherwise. Many North Texans traded in the beach for their backyard — and Holden was ready to help. For a year now, he has provided white-glove pool services to Dallas homeowners, primarily in the Park Cities, Preston Hollow, Lakewood, and Lake Highlands. Keeping a tight-knit customer radius means Holden can assist ARTICLE CHRISTIANA NIELSON PHOTOGRAPHY TRAVIS BAUGH 16

all of his clients efficiently and can provide high-quality service to everyone. He works on pools year-round to keep them clean, but his business picks up in March and stays strong through September. His services include a weekly clean, twice-weekly clean, and filter clean. He ensures the chemical balance of the pool is always correct and removes any debris and algae from the water. He also makes sure that the cleaning mechanism in the pool works properly, and he performs minor pool repairs. Even when a pool is not seasonally in use, Holden stresses the importance of maintaining pool cleanliness and water level. “I just try to reiterate for my customers to keep water in the pool,” he says, “meaning halfway up the skimmer line. When you have water in there, it flows through your filter. Not having water would be like running a car engine without oil. It’s absolutely necessary to keep proper water in there.” Holden also cautions against the use of too many chlorine tabs at one time in the pool, which can cause a chemical imbalance. “All you need, even during the peak dog days of summer, is one to two tabs,” he says. “Otherwise, it raises the cyanuric acid level too high and won’t sanitize the water properly. The ideal level for that, also known as a stabilizer or conditioner, is 30 to 50 parts per million. If it gets above 100 parts per million, the pool needs to be drained and you need to start over fresh.” Through Josh’s Pool Service, Holden has found that, no matter who the homeowner is, every lifestyle calls for community and fellowship — and a pool facilitates that. By keeping his clients’ pools in pristine condition, and being a dependable business owner, he’s helping them foster that community. “I’ve learned that people want someone to be there when they say they’ll be there, somebody that they can depend on to be trustworthy,” he says. Moving into the second year of Josh’s Pool Service, Holden hopes to continue to expand his clientele and learn more about the remodeling and repair side of the pool industry. “Hopefully I can eventually be the biggest provider in the area,” he says. “But more importantly, what I’m after is providing quality service for somebody who wants and appreciates it.” 18
