Let’s Talk

Mommy Makeovers The Mommy Makeover is a catch-all phrase that refers to a specialized combination of body contouring procedures. The purpose of the Mommy Makeover is to address the regions of the body that have been affected by pregnancy and nursing in one comprehensive treatment plan. Using her cultivated skill and artistic eye, Dr. Walker customizes care to address each patient’s areas of concern precisely and beautifully. Every Mommy Makeover is unique. Most take place in a single surgery, but this may vary based on individual circumstances. Dr. Walker elaborates on her customized treatment recommendations for each patient after a thorough consultation and physical examination.

Holiday Spirit and Ghosts of the Past WITH THE HOLIDAYS APPROACHING AND 2022 RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER, IT IS TIME TO CELEBRATE THE IMPORTANT THINGS IN THIS WORLD. Spending time with loved ones, taking some time off, and counting our many blessings are always part of the season for me. This annual cycle of reviewing the past, seeing both the beauty and missed opportunities, and moving forward with love and cheer is a true gift for me each year. A Christmas Carol is one of my favorite stories. The transformation of Ebenezer Scrooge as he moves from a miserly, crotchety, curmudgeon to a joyful, enlightened,

giving man who embodies the true Spirit of Christmas is nothing short of a miracle. I understand Scrooge. Scarred by economic hardships from a long-ago event, he protected himself with his miserly ways. Long past the point of abundance, he still could not give up the need to hold onto every penny. He also had no tolerance for those around him who did not live out his own distorted view of scarcity. It was the Ghost of Christmas Past who brings clarity to his greedy and self-serving life. The Ghost of Christmas Present then teaches him that joy and love are all around him, and it really has nothing to do with money. His heart is finally warmed by Tiny Tim, who despite his physical and economic hardship teaches him about

FOR NEARLY 40 YEARS, TOYS UNIQUE HAS MADE SHOPPING A FAMILY EXPERIENCE. IF YOU’VE EVER WALKED AROUND INWOOD VILLAGE, CHANCES ARE YOU’VE SEEN TOYS UNIQUE, THE 40-YEAR-OLD FAMILY-OWNED CHILDREN’S TOY STORE BURSTING WITH GIZMOS AND GADGETS A PLENTY. In its current location for the past seven years, Toys Unique first opened for business in 1982. Owners Pam and Dean May have weathered the toy business with many pivots and changes and locations during that time—but for this couple, there’s no other way they would have it. “I was 24 when I sold my first toy,” says Pam May, who has since handled frontof-the-house business while her husband handles the back. “We really work well 20

together. He does that side, I do this side, and we meet in middle.” Not long after selling that first toy, she and Dean welcomed their first child, a son, eventually followed by a daughter, while their business expanded to multiple stores around the North Texas area. Now, with their two children grown, she and Dean have settled on this single location. “Our goal in our elderly years was always to get down to one store,” May explains. “And that’s where we are now.” Already stocked and geared up for the holiday season, May says they are prepped for the ongoing supply chain situation. “We had two warehouse spaces—we ended up almost quadrupling that,” she says. “We started thinking we need to not only buy through December, we need to buy through January and into February. So, that’s what we’ve done.” And while their warehouse is chock-full of Barbie dolls and LEGO kits and all those other festive toys for tots, she cautions her customers to shop early anyway. “It’s not to say that we won’t have a lot towards the end—we will—but we might not have that one Barbie they want,” May says. “We might have another Barbie, but we might not have that one.” Luckily, the entire team at Toys Unique makes shopping (and shopping early) as easy as possible for its loyal customers—no matter what. During the pandemic, the store had to shut down for five weeks. That didn’t stop Toys Unique—Pam and Dean continued to pay their staff while Pam would fill orders to all the moms and customers in the area from her cell phone and handle pick-ups in the alley behind the store. er makes v e t it ha e “ W , we ’r e w illing as ie r f or to em h do” t “I learned a long time ago that retail is a people business,” May says. “Yes, it’s the buying, and yes, it’s the selling and all that. But the bottom line is about people. And so you take care of your staff, and you take care of your customers.” For the holidays, they are ready to do the same—and they are also hiring store managers and receiving managers for those interested. And while the store is open and back in full swing for in-person perusing, May says you can also follow them on Instagram for gift ideas, peruse their catalog, call ahead, or make an appointment with her or the staff for specific personal shopping help—she even says some customers bring their children in to take pictures of toys and hone those Christmas lists in advance. Don’t forget about the complimentary gift wrap, either. “Whatever makes it easier for them, we’re willing to do,” May says. That sounds like a family-owned business who understands what the holiday season is all about.

GIVING BACK

ARTICLE ALLISON GIBESON PHOTOGRAPHY JANIE JONES

GIVING AWAY AFTER A SUCCESSFUL CAMPAIGN LAST YEAR, LIFESTYLE PUBLICATIONS IS GIVING $300,000 TO RECIPIENTS IN NEED THIS CHRISTMAS SEASON AND BEYOND... AND WE NEED YOUR HELP!

ABOUT SIX YEARS AGO ANNA SAROL, THE DAUGHTER OF A SINGLE MOTHER, WAS PARALYZED IN A GYMNASTICS ACCIDENT WHEN SHE WAS A FRESHMAN IN HIGH SCHOOL, BUT UNTIL LAST YEAR SHE DID NOT HAVE A STAIRLIFT IN HER HOME. The stairlift was made possible when Lifestyle Publications gave her family $10,000. Anna Sarol

“I watched my community come together to help me get this equipment to my house, and words can’t explain how appreciative my family and I are,” Anna says. The money for Anna’s stairlift was part of a giveaway campaign from the company during the 2020 Christmas season that benefited more than 80 recipients across the country with a final distribution of $250,000 throughout the year. When the company opened nominations, they were flooded with submissions. Community leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you nominated people that were in need of assistance. As the eyes and ears of the community, these readers were able to help identify people who might have otherwise gone unnoticed or unrecognized. One such nominee was Kathy*, an aunt who is raising her three young relatives. The children came from an abusive situation, and Kathy, a single guardian, works tirelessly to provide for them. Nevertheless, the family was already living in poverty despite her working seven days a week when Kathy lost her job during the pandemic. She resorted to selling tamales to help pay the rent.

28

Park Cities Lifestyle | December 2021

When a case manager with a Big Brothers Big Sisters foster youth mentoring program heard about Lifestyle’s campaign and call for nominations, she quickly thought of Kathy. “When I shared the news that Kathy was selected and would be receiving $3,000, she cried, screamed, and was in disbelief,” the case manager said. “She immediately wanted to give back to me and the donor by providing endless tamales. This funding allowed the children to have a small Christmas tree for the first time ever. Kathy was able to pay her rent and utilities for three months, and the children were able to experience a holiday season in peace without financial stressors.”

GIVING BACK (CONTINUED)

WE NEED YOUR HELP TO GIVE AWAY $3OO,OOO This year the company will have nominations for the giveaway open from December 1-15, 2021. To submit a nomination, follow @CityLifestyle on Instagram and fill out the form found in the bio link. The amount given to each recipient will be based on need. The leaders of Lifestyle Publications believe God has blessed them with their company’s continued success, so they in turn wish to be a blessing and encouragement to others as they increase the amount of this year’s giveaway to those in need to $300,000 for the year.

In yet another case, Emily* who worked as a janitor at a school, was a recipient and was struggling to afford simply buying groceries for her children. Before the ongoing difficulties of the pandemic even started, a tornado destroyed the school she worked at just a couple weeks before the initial shutdown in March 2020 which resulted in a loss of income for her. Emily was incredibly surprised and grateful to receive assistance from the giveaway. *Names changed for privacy 30

LOLA THOMAS ART E C L E CTIC F IN E ART

Lola Thomas · Owner My background is Italian, but I grew up in Argentina. I was 24 when I arrived to the US with one bag, one pair of shoes and a rosary that my mother gave me and to which I clinched the entire 13 hours that the flight lasted. I fell in love deeply with this country, I loved the combination of everything, the big and tall buildings surrounded by the small tiny houses, the neutral luxury neighborhoods among the colorful noisy ones, the different cultures, and foods, and music, it was a big potpourri of life! Oh boy I was home! So my art is very much like that a mix of everything a bit of love, a bit of noise, a bit of vintage, a bit of modern, a bit of dark, a bit of pink... I have learned that what is blue to me could be green, or yellow, or red, even purple to another, and I love it because can you imagine how boring life would be if we were all the same?
