The Style Is Right

September 2026 PUBLISHER

Come on down, Gena. You’re our Style Issue cover star. You likely remember Gena Lee Nolin beside Bob Barker’s Plinko board or playing the bad girl on Baywatch. But this cover is not about looking back. It is about the Scottsdale mom she is today and the woman she is becoming. When I interviewed Gena, I figured we'd talk for 20 minutes. Instead, we chatted for two hours, bouncing between on-the-record stories and the off-the-record tangents that happen when two women simply connect. I am honored to have Gena on this cover, but even more honored that she trusted us with the story of who she is now. For years, Gena stepped into roles other people created for her. This chapter is about finding herself without a script. That, to me, is what's really in style. This issue is deeper than fashion and fads. Of course, we talk trends. But style has never been only about what we wear. September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, and this fall, I am honored to emcee the Amanda Hope Rainbow Angels gala. Its mission is incredibly tender, and I wanted to use these pages to spotlight several young cancer warriors. These children have faced things no child should have to understand. But when you meet them, you do not see a diagnosis. You see kids who deserve to be celebrated for everything they are, not simply everything they have endured. We brought them together for a fun fashion shoot, but the real story was watching each child step in front of the camera and own the moment. Thinking about style this way made me reflect on how my own definition has changed. Many moons ago, I was the morning traffic anchor for CBS 5 here in Phoenix. I was always so honored when Arizona Foothills Magazine voted me the Valley’s most fashionable traffic girl. (I am forever a fan of our fellow local media.) Back then, style meant dresses, my signature belts, heels and trying to look pulled together during very early mornings. Looking back, I realize I was still learning how to present myself to the world. Now, style means much more. I still love a great outfit, but I am far more interested in the person wearing it. Throughout this issue, we explore style from every angle, because trends change, clothes change, and we change. The confidence to become more fully yourself, however, never goes out of style. Fame found Gena Lee Nolin at 22. At almost 55, freedom is finding her. Nearly an empty nester, she is stepping into a newly independent life just as Baywatch prepares to return to television in January. The timing could not be more cinematic. The series that made Gena one of the most recognizable women in the world is beginning again. So is she. And Neely Capshaw may be coming with her. “There’s only one Neely, really,” Gena says. Every chapter of her life has come with a look, a label and a part to play. This one comes with no costume, no lines and no director.

“This cover story is monumental because it captures the exact moment of my rebirth. It is a portrait of who I am becoming.” CONTINUED >

Gena & daughter Stella

Gena made being seen look effortless. She dazzled on The Price Is Right, made bad look good in Baywatch red, ruled the jungle as Sheena and bared all for Playboy. Now, the next chapter is hers to define. “Life is kind of just beginning. This cover does not capture a comeback. It captures an arrival.” Before revisiting the fame, the red suit and the woman everyone thought they knew, we begin with the life Gena is choosing now. WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT THE LIFE YOU HAVE NOW? My journey has taken many twists and turns, and where I am now feels fresh, new and exciting.

20

M UST SE E | STYL E + BEAU T Y

Now I am navigating a deeply personal transition, nearing an empty nest and stepping into life as my own woman. It is freeing, but somewhat sad and also a little scary. This cover story is monumental because it captures the exact moment of my rebirth. It is not simply a photo shoot or a look back at where I have been. It is a portrait of who I am becoming. I believe in divine timing and that everything happens for a reason. Sometimes mistakes bring us to our knees, and the only way forward is to do the work. We may lose people we love, but we gain a deeper understanding of ourselves. I am raw, rebuilding and done pretending. This is me, and it feels good.

DO YOU FEEL MORE LIKE YOURSELF NOW? I do. My daughter is about to turn 18, and we have been talking about the courage and intuition it takes to step into the world. At her age, I was insecure and had no idea who I was. She already has such a strong sense of herself, and I deeply admire that. It feels beautifully full circle to watch her enter adulthood as I enter a new life of my own. AT 19, YOU LEFT LAS VEGAS FOR LOS ANGELES. WHAT WERE YOU CHASING? Not Hollywood. I had no plan to become an actress or a model. I wanted to be by the beach. I wanted freedom and an experience.

THEN TELEVISION FOUND YOU. It happened fast. I was 22 when I started on The Price Is Right. I loved it. It was fun, and I was with Bob Barker and the original girls I grew up watching.

AUSTIN BATES Licensed Mortgage Loan Officer

AND THEN A BAYWATCH CASTING DIRECTOR SAW YOU PRESENTING A CABIN CRUISER IN A SWIMSUIT. They were casting a new character named Neely Capshaw, who was the bad girl of the show. I had never seen a professional script. I had no acting experience. I went into the audition and read opposite David Hasselhoff right out of the gate. I walked into a room with about 19 people, but I remember being so dialed in. I was in the zone. I was strangely comfortable in that room. I sensed something special was happening. NEELY WAS SEXY, MANIPULATIVE AND FEARLESS. The opposite of who I was. The producers sent me movies like Body Heat because they wanted me to understand that salacious, sexy bad girl energy. They wanted Kathleen Turner quality, with the raspy voice and the confidence. Meanwhile, I went home after receiving my first paycheck and bought a sewing machine. I sewed curtains. I was a homebody. I never partied or got into that scene. It was fun to go to work and become someone completely different. Then, at the end of the day, I would wash off my makeup and go back to being me. WAS THERE A PART OF NEELY YOU NEEDED? Neely had backbone, strong, and vivacious. She was all these things that I felt I lacked. I was shy and insecure. Playing a character who was so much bigger than life was difficult, but it became a personal development experience for me. Anytime you play a character, you have to bring some part of yourself to her. With Neely, I had to find a part of myself I had not really used before. CONTINUED >

HOW QUICKLY DID FAME ARRIVE? The day I got the part, I was on Entertainment Tonight. The next morning, my phone blew up. Overnight, people were sitting in my bushes with long lenses, following me and lining the beach by the hundreds while we filmed. It was scary and exciting all at once. That was what was so great about having Pamela and David and the other cast members. We could talk to each other about it because we were all experiencing it. I joined during season six, which became the biggest season the show had.

“For the first time, I am not borrowing strength from a character. It is mine. I am becoming more fully myself, and I decide what happens next.”

NOW BAYWATCH IS GETTING A TV REBOOT. I have known about the new series for a while. After the documentary and the Dwayne Johnson film, conversations about reviving Baywatch were already circulating. I was excited, but also leery because introducing something this iconic to a new generation is difficult. Still, I am optimistic. I think it has legs, and I am curious to see what this very young cast does with it. IS NEELY CAPSHAW MAKING A COMEBACK? Possibly. SO DOES THAT MEAN YOU ARE MAKING A COMEBACK? There is only one Neely, really.

22

M UST SE E | STYL E + BEAU T Y

THAT SOUNDS LIKE A TEASE. They are filming now. At the time we are having this conversation, they are only around episode four. That is all I can say. YOU ALSO RECENTLY REUNITED WITH MEMBERS OF THE ORIGINAL CAST FOR SOMETHING COMING TO FOX THIS FALL... We had a reunion of sorts for a very fun show on FOX. Stay tuned. AFTER THREE REGULAR SEASONS, YOU WALKED AWAY FROM BAYWATCH. Yes, my oldest son was around two, and I had reached a point where I was burned out. We were living in the Hollywood Hills, but I had family in Scottsdale. That was what brought me here. I wanted to be a mom and have that time with him. It was the easiest transition. When you are working on a TV show, you are doing 18 hour days. In Scottsdale, I could have mommy and me groups and embrace that part of my life. THEN HOLLYWOOD CAME CALLING AGAIN. About two years after I settled in Scottsdale, the executive producer of Baywatch called and said Sony was developing a television series based on the comic book character Sheena.

He told me there was no one else who could play the part. I was torn, so I met with everyone involved, and the team surrounding the show was incredible. I did Sheena for two seasons. We filmed in Orlando, so I moved my family. My mom came with us as my son’s nanny. It was exciting, but also stressful. One episode takes eight days to film, and I was number one on the call sheet. NEELY WAS A WOMAN YOU HAD TO FIND. DID SHEENA FEEL DIFFERENT? With Sheena, I owned it. I was older and had more experience; seasoned and understood the industry. I had a completely different perspective on what I was stepping into. Playing both women was empowering because they were strong characters. Neely had backbone, and Sheena was powerful and physical. DID YOU FEEL PRESSURE TO MAINTAIN A PARTICULAR BODY? The 90s were a different world, and the industry was male dominated. On The Price Is Right, wearing a swimsuit to present a boat was simply part of the job. Baywatch felt the same. I never carried body shame, and I was firm about my boundaries. The harder pressure came from within. It was the self doubt and the feeling that maybe I was not thin enough. Then my body began telling me something was truly wrong. After gaining a ton of weight with my second child, I lost a tremendous amount while pregnant with Stella and went into atrial fibrillation. It took until a year after her birth to be diagnosed with Hashimoto’s, a condition few people discussed at the time. AND IT COMPELLED YOU TO WRITE A BOOK, THYROID SEXY. Some of the darkest days of my life. I was at my lowest… heavy, depressed and completely lost because no one seemed to know what was wrong with me. CONTINUED >

I wrote Thyroid Sexy because it was the most unsexy. I’ve always said, if I can help one person on their journey, I’ve done my job. When you do not feel well, looking good becomes an afterthought. You are trying to understand your body, find answers, and feel like yourself again. Beauty became much more connected to health, awareness and what was happening inside me. THIS IS OUR STYLE ISSUE. WHAT DOES STYLE MEAN TO YOU NOW? Simplicity. Being carefree and comfortable. My look is denim, a T-shirt, loafers and a cute little bag. I rarely wear makeup. Less is more.

24

M UST SE E | STYL E + BEAU T Y

WHAT DOES YOUR BEAUTY ROUTINE LOOK LIKE? I am a big walker because it lifts my mood and is gentle on the body. I also do Pilates, weight training, and my monthly DiamondGlow. My grandmother used Noxzema or Dove soap, and my mother has taken such great care of her skin... I think she’s had one laser in her 78 years! Both taught me that beautiful skin does not require much. I believe in keeping style and skincare simple and clean. DO YOU STILL HAVE THE RED SWIMSUIT? I have a few stashed away. It seems so long ago, and it is. But it also feels like a flashback, like it was yesterday.

Time is a thief. HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT SOCIAL MEDIA? Fame before social media felt far more contained. Today, people can hide behind a screen, and the bullying, hate and constant comparison can be damaging at any age. My relationship with social media is complicated. I share what I choose, keep it as real as possible and try to use it for good. WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED ABOUT BEING A WOMAN AT THIS AGE? We are far too hard on ourselves. Women need to support each other. We need to embrace aging and every chapter of our lives.

INVEST IN INTEGRITY Founded by Arizona native Cole Derosier, Integrity Custom Cabinetry designs and builds refined, one-of-a-kind cabinetry and millwork for discerning homeowners across the Valley. For Cole, integrity isn’t just the name. It’s the standard. Every project is fully custom. Every detail intentional. Every finish precise. I look back at all the years I spent feeling insecure and doubting myself. I think many women reading this will understand that feeling. There is so much beauty in reaching a point where you know yourself better and can appreciate every chapter that brought you here.

As part of our commitment to giving back to our community, Integrity Custom Cabinetry is proud to support Chances for Children.

WHAT ARE YOU STILL DISCOVERING ABOUT YOURSELF? We are constantly changing. We have to grow, learn from our past mistakes and apply those lessons to what we want in our lives. I tell my kids to keep taking risks, remain true to themselves and understand that every part of the journey teaches them something. That is what I am doing now too. AFTER A LIFETIME OF PLAYING STRONG WOMEN, ARE YOU FINALLY RECOGNIZING THAT STRENGTH AS YOUR OWN? I think so. Neely pushed me to find a strength I did not yet recognize in myself. By the time I played Sheena, I was ready to own that power. Now, for the first time, I am not borrowing strength from a character. It is mine. That is what this rebirth means to me. I am becoming more fully myself in an authentic way, and this time, I decide what happens next.

Dr. & Mrs. B.

Jenni & Sophie

PHOTOGRAPHY BY MICHAEL FRANCO Sophie Cunningham brought the swagger. Jenni built strength. Dr. B refined the smile. “Sophie’s transformation was one of my favorites,” says Dr. B. “She already had the confidence and personality. I just had to give her the smile to match.” By the time Sophie stepped in front of the cameras for Sports Illustrated Swimsuit, the goal was never to turn her into someone new. It was to make everything already there impossible to miss. “Confidence is knowing exactly who you are and not needing everyone else to understand it,” Sophie tells us. CONTINUED >

While Dr. B perfected the details, his wife, Jenni, was preparing the Mercury-turned-Fever superstar physically and mentally for the shoot. “Sophie is literally every coach’s dream client,” Jenni says. “She’s like: tell me what to do and I’ll do it 100 percent.” Nutrition was dialed in. Training had purpose. Distractions were pushed aside. In Jenni’s words, there was one goal in mind: “Be kick a** on that cover.” It is hard to imagine a better illustration of why Dr. B and Jenni have become known as a transformation couple. At Studio B Smiles, he creates signature smiles. In the gym, she builds strength, stamina and bodies capable of performing under pressure. One works in millimeters. The other works in reps. Both are after the same result: the moment someone begins to carry themselves differently. “Transformation is rarely just about what people see in the mirror,” Dr. B says. “I can change someone’s smile and she can change someone’s body, but the real transformation happens when that person starts carrying themselves differently.” They see it in the posture, the pictures, and the willingness to laugh without covering a mouth or enter a room without shrinking. Their clients stand taller, smile more and stop negotiating with the insecurities that once controlled them. That shift is especially powerful when the client makes a living in the public eye. As team dentist for the Phoenix Suns and Arizona Diamondbacks, Dr. B cares for athletes whose faces appear on television screens, social media feeds and arena scoreboards. A smile becomes part of an athlete’s identity, but for Dr. B, aesthetics never come before health. “An athlete can’t be distracted by a dental issue. My job is to make their smile something they never have to think about, unless someone is complimenting it.” His client list may include professional athletes, celebrities and executives, but inside the treatment room, status quickly loses its power. “Once someone is in the dental chair, titles disappear. Everyone is human and has insecurities.” Dr. B’s signature is restraint. He is not interested in creating a row of teeth that looks overly designed or instantly

recognizable as dental work. He approaches a smile much like a great stylist approaches a client: preserve the identity, refine the proportions and understand when to stop. “A beautiful smile shouldn’t be perfect. It should be natural and believable. Teeth need character, proportion and little nuances that make them look like they belong to that person.” Trends will inevitably change. His philosophy will not. “Natural beauty doesn’t,” he says. “My goal isn’t to give patients cookie cutter smile designs. It’s to create the patient’s own signature smile.” Jenni understands the demands of being seen from a different vantage point. Before becoming a performance coach, she experienced that pressure herself as a Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader, Miami Heat Dancer, Phoenix Suns Dancer and member of the Phoenix Mercury Hip Hop Squad. Her résumé may look glamorous, but she remembers the stress that often existed behind the hair, makeup and uniforms. “I wish I would have known everything I know now about nutrition and the importance of weight training then. I would have been way less stressed out about my body and meals. Food is fuel.” Today, as a personal trainer for the Phoenix Suns Dancers and Arizona Cardinals Cheerleaders, Jenni is determined to change the way these women view themselves and their training. “They are professional elite athletes,” she says. “I drive that home with them.” The work is not about simply looking the part. Jenni teaches them fuel for games, practices and appearances, while her small group sessions come with a straightforward warning: “We lift heavy.” Team boot camps build endurance for the demands most spectators never fully see. These performers must dance full out for hours, execute demanding choreography and tumbling, navigate hair flips and poms, and deliver every timeout and halftime performance with a bright smile. “The energy it takes to perform full out for two to three hours straight is crazy,” Jenni says. “Building up to being able to handle that takes more discipline than you’ll ever know.” CONTINUED >

The women who earn those coveted positions are selected from hundreds, sometimes thousands, of hopefuls. Talent is only the beginning. They must carry themselves beautifully, communicate intelligently, remain humble and compassionate, and understand that they represent an organization even after leaving the field or court. Jenni knows something about building a career beyond the role people first associate with you. Her two cents? “Say yes and figure it out later.” That same mentality appears in the celebrities, CEOs, Olympians and professional athletes she trains. They are not constantly motivated. They simply refuse to let that become an excuse. “There’s not one high level athlete, actor, model or performer who feels motivated and excited to train all the time, but they do it anyway.” Still, the work of Dr. B and Jenni is not reserved for famous faces. Some of Dr. B’s most meaningful transformations happen far from the cameras. Through his work with Devin Booker and Special Olympics Arizona, Dr. B has provided complimentary dental care to athletes in need. It is a partnership that has brought his entire philosophy back to its most important purpose. “These athletes don’t come in asking for a Hollywood smile. Many simply want to smile without being self conscious.” For Dr. B, the opportunity to give someone both oral health and confidence is a powerful reminder that a transformed smile can alter far more than an appearance. Whether they are preparing Sophie Cunningham for Sports Illustrated Swimsuit, helping an athlete perform without distraction or giving someone the confidence to smile fully, neither is interested in creating a different person. They reveal the strongest, most confident version of the one who was already there. Because what’s really in style is not the body or the smile. It is the transformation that happens when someone finally stops hiding. studiobsmiles.com

On September 19th, the Arizona Diamondbacks and New York Yankees will meet again at Chase Field. But before a pitch is thrown, Arizona will return to the night it became a baseball town. Before the first pitch, members of the 2001 World Series championship team will take the field for a special reunion ceremony marking 25 years since the Diamondbacks defeated New York in one of the most unforgettable finishes in baseball history. At the center of that history is Jerry Colangelo, the founding owner and chief executive who brought Major League Baseball to Arizona and built the fastest expansion franchise ever to win a World Series. A while back, Mr. Colangelo appeared on our cover. In honor of the D-backs’ exciting milestone this month, we’re revisiting excerpts from that original interview and his reflections on the team’s legacy. Few individuals have had a greater impact on the world of sports, business, and real estate than Jerry. From his humble beginnings on the South Side of Chicago to shaping the landscape of professional basketball, baseball, and urban development in Arizona, his journey is one of vision, perseverance, and leadership. Jerry arrived in Phoenix in 1968 at age 28 to help build the Phoenix Suns from the ground up. He later helped launch the Phoenix Mercury, brought Major League Baseball to the Valley, rebuilt USA Basketball and played a pivotal role in transforming downtown Phoenix into a sports and business hub. His influence on the city is why he is fittingly dubbed the Godfather of Phoenix. From the beginning, his approach extended beyond winning games.

“This community owes us nothing,” he said during his first Suns press conference. “We have to earn the support and respect of the community by how we conduct ourselves, not only on the court, but in the community.” That philosophy would eventually become part of the foundation of the Arizona Diamondbacks. Long before the franchise existed, baseball was young Jerry’s first dream. “I thought I was going to be a pitcher in the major leagues, and that was my first love originally. I was a lefty and had opportunities to sign contracts.” But basketball ultimately changed his course. It brought him to Phoenix, led to nearly four decades with the Suns and prepared him for the opportunity to build another professional franchise in a completely different sport. The path back to baseball began in 1993, shortly after the Suns lost to the Chicago Bulls in the NBA Finals. Jerry was in his office at the arena when Joe Garagiola Jr. and county official Jim Bruner came to see him. Their message was direct. Arizona was ready for Major League Baseball, and they believed Jerry was the person to make it happen. His plate was already full. Initially, he could not imagine taking on something of that magnitude. Then the memories began returning. He thought about growing up on the South Side of Chicago, falling asleep while listening to baseball games on the radio and believing he might one day pitch in the major leagues himself. Jerry agreed to explore the possibility. He called baseball owners around the country, including George Steinbrenner and Jerry Reinsdorf, to ask what they thought of Phoenix as a Major League market. Their encouragement pushed him forward. “I went out and met with more people. I looked at buildings around the country and then came back and said to them, okay, let’s give it a shot. Let’s go for it.” The response was immediate. Jerry recalls approximately $70 million in potential investment coming forward after the announcement that Phoenix would pursue a team. For someone who had spent his career in basketball, moving into Major League Baseball did not feel like entering unfamiliar territory. “People say, well, you know, that’s baseball. That’s different than basketball,” he says. “And I said, the only difference is the size of the ball. The business is still the same.” The Diamondbacks were awarded to Arizona in 1995 and began playing in 1998. Before the first pitch was ever thrown, the organization sold 36,000 season tickets. The inaugural season unfolded much like a traditional expansion year. The team struggled, some season ticket holders did not renew and Jerry realized the original plan needed to change. The Diamondbacks had intended to build patiently through the draft and farm system. Declining ticket revenue forced a reassessment. Colangelo called his partners together. “I said, we’re going to have to do something different. Let’s go get some free agents. Let’s win now.” That decision altered the trajectory of the franchise. The roster that followed included Jay Bell, Matt Williams, Steve Finley, Luis Gonzalez, Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling. In only their second season, the Diamondbacks won 100 games and the National League West. Two seasons later, they reached the World Series. Waiting for them were the New York Yankees, the most storied franchise in baseball and the winners of three consecutive championships. During the first round of interviews with national and international media, Jerry was asked how it felt to reach the World Series faster than any expansion team before them.

“We feel blessed. We feel honored,” he told them. “And it can’t get any more exciting than this. Here we are playing the most storied franchise in the history of baseball, the New York Yankees. And if we’re going to win our first World Series, why not?” Then came a prediction so specific it is almost difficult to believe 25 years later. “The series will go seven games,” Jerry said. “We will win it in the seventh game in front of our home crowd. It’ll be the ninth inning, the bases loaded, two outs, and Gonzo at the plate.” The series did go seven games. Game 7 was played in Arizona. The Diamondbacks entered the bottom of the ninth trailing 2 to 1 before rallying against Yankees closer Mariano Rivera. The bases were loaded when Gonzalez stepped to the plate and delivered the walk-off single that made Arizona a world champion. “It all happened, except there was one out, not two.” As the ninth inning unfolded, Jerry sat beside the Diamondbacks dugout and watched. “I said, Lord, you have a funny sense of humor,” he recalls. “I worked my whole life to win an NBA championship, and we couldn’t do it. But we’re about to win a World Series.” Then Gonzo’s hit dropped into the outfield. Colangelo cried. Fans celebrated through the night, and he never went to sleep. Early the next morning, President George W. Bush called to congratulate him. “I said, where the he** were you last night? You’re supposed to call me in a locker room.” Jerry’s Diamondbacks legacy also extends beyond what happened on the field; rather, the field itself. Colangelo helped create the ballpark originally known as Bank One Ballpark and now Chase Field. Its retractable roof made summer baseball possible in Phoenix, while its downtown location helped reshape the center of the city. “It was a great time building the buildings downtown, you know, the arena, the ballpark, the theater, and being part of turning downtown into a real downtown.” That larger vision is why his influence remains inseparable from Arizona sports. He did not simply assemble teams. He created institutions around which a growing city could gather. But there’s always been something special about baseball.

“It was a family affair to sit on a porch and listen to a game on the radio because we didn’t have TV at the time. It bonded people together, in my opinion.” On September 19th, parents who watched the 2001 World Series will bring their children to see Arizona’s first major championship team return to the field where history was made. And once again, the opponent will be the New York Yankees. The full interview with Jerry Colangelo is now streaming on the Now with Nadine podcast.

INSIDE AZ’S RECORD-BREAKING SALE AND THE PV ESTATE THAT MADE HISTORY

PHOTOGRAPHY BY LUX IMAGE BY COLTON SIMON Forty million, two hundred thirty-eight thousand dollars. Cash. On July 9th, 2026, a nearly two-acre estate at 5531 East Mockingbird Lane in Paradise Valley became the most expensive residential sale in Arizona history. By the next day, the number was making national news. At 20,919 square feet, the residence has 8 bedrooms, 11 bathrooms, two 432-bottle wine walls, resort-caliber wellness spaces, a salon, a shooting range, a theater, a safe room, an underground go-kart track and enough space across the property to indulge a serious automobile collection. Behind the record are two distinct perspectives. Katrina Barrett represented the seller and has now represented Arizona’s two highest residential sales. Mark Candelaria, founder and principal of Candelaria Design, is the architectural visionary behind the estate, shaping it from its original footprint through a dramatic expansion. One knows what makes a buyer say yes. The other knows what makes a home impossible to replicate. Together, they answer the $40 million question. The irony? The woman behind Arizona’s biggest residential deal has barely celebrated it. “I do a bad job of celebrating wins and tend to keep looking forward to what’s next in the pipeline. Sometimes I even cringe when the big ones sell or generate a lot of press because your competition doesn’t always celebrate your success, and being good to your peer group is important in real estate,” Katrina says. Asked whether she has stepped back to appreciate what she accomplished, her answer is simple. “No.” Then comes the reality behind the headline. “Often when one listing achieves a great sale, another seller becomes more pushy about why they aren’t accomplishing the same thing. It adds pressure, but these large sales are good for all of Arizona and continue pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in our market.” Katrina is characteristically direct about an industry in which one extraordinary result can create as much expectation as celebration. “Personally, no one sale shifts the needle dramatically,” she says. “Finding ways to improve our systems and making sure clients are happy and well served are much more important. Markets change, marketing tools and tactics evolve, and I work hard to adapt so we can continue delivering exceptional results for our clients.” CONTINUED >

Katrina Barrett

Her first impression of the estate was far less complicated. “This home checked more boxes than any home I have ever listed. The seller and build team took meticulous care in how it was crafted, and we were incredibly thankful for that attention to detail.” The boxes, in this case, are not subtle. The home includes a fitness center, gym, cold plunge, sauna, salon, massage room and multiple wings and gathering spaces designed to entertain on an enormous scale. Above ground, the architecture stays light, clean and composed. Below ground, all bets are off. “The basement… it’s over the top,” says Mark Candelaria. Yet the home did not begin as a 20,000-square-foot private resort. Mark describes the original residence as an approximately 7,000-square-foot, five-bedroom home with a four-car garage and detached guest house. When the neighboring lot was acquired, the vision expanded: approximately 2,000 additional livable square feet on the main and upper levels, a gym, toy room, garage loft, an 18-car garage, more than 10,000 square feet below ground and another two-bedroom guest house. “The simple Transitional Style carried right from the original home to the new additions making the home unified and seamless,” he says. The architecture was intentionally neither aggressively modern nor overtly traditional. “We used clean lines and minimal details with light and bright materials. Every opportunity to employ indoor-outdoor living was captured.” Even the garage understands presentation. Rather than one cavernous room, its 6,000 square feet were divided into smaller collections. “We broke up all the garage spaces into two to 4 car vignettes so in essence each space is its own showroom and collection.”

Not to mention the wine display. Two glass walls, each designed for 432 bottles, flank the opening to the dining room, creating what Mark calls “a wonderful prelude to the dining experience.” And naturally, the kitchen has a backstage. “Extra ovens, refrigeration, warming drawers and tons of storage in the ‘Dirty Kitchen’ keeps the clutter out of the ‘Pretty Kitchen’,” he says. On the lower level, a theater, safe room, salon, spa, sauna, massage room, lounge, bar, playground and go-kart track unfold as one cohesive experience rather than a collection of amenities. “There’s flow to all of it.” For Katrina, one dazzling room will never separate a $10 million home from a $40 million one. Everything has to arrive together. “Square footage, lot size (this home truly had the equivalent of a football field) along with exceptional views, privacy, and world-class amenities are what separate a $40 million home from a $10 million home.” Yet the features that say the most about what is in style now are not go-karts, gun ranges or garages. They are the spaces devoted to wellness. “People are drinking less and exercising more, so those spaces are driving demand. At the same time, this estate was truly an entertainment retreat, and the ability to collect, wash, service, and store up to 38 cars on-site really set the property apart.” For Mark, the salon and wellness level was always meant to rival a destination resort. “This space is probably better than most hotel spas.” The flex has changed. Katrina sees a fundamental shift in how affluent buyers define a life well lived. “Five to ten years ago, before COVID, people traveled more, entertained at home less, and weren’t investing in their minds and bodies the way they are today. People have shifted from simply

Wellness Room

surviving to truly living and maximizing health, wellness, and lifestyle. There’s now a mindset that a healthy, happy mind is a productive one, and that great homes should create opportunities to share those experiences with others.” Wellness is only half of it. The other half is connection. “In a world where AI is replacing many aspects of daily life, people are craving genuine human connection, and a home provides a private place for intentional time together.” Looking ahead, Katrina expects the next generation of residences to focus even more intensely on removing toxins, controlling odors, optimizing lighting, sleep and circadian rhythms, and integrating wellness throughout the home. She also anticipates more intentional spaces for gathering: Mahjong rooms, pickleball courts with observation decks, meditation spaces, in-home spas and farm-to-table, chef-style tasting rooms. And for Mark, value will always be personal. “Your home is your sanctuary. I always say, how much does a bottle of wine cost? It can be $2 or $2,000… it’s still wine. Value is in the eye of the beholder.” At this level, time may be the ultimate status symbol. “Why spend years designing and building a home like this, making countless decisions along the way, when you can purchase it complete and move right in?” A buyer is not only purchasing land, architecture and amenities; they’re acquiring years of decisions already made, problems already solved, and a fully realized way of life available immediately. Katrina’s definition brings the entire house into focus. “A $40 million home is defined by the quality of its materials, using the very best at every turn, but more importantly, by the feeling it creates. It should solve needs in a way few homes can, whether that’s entertaining, dining, parking, collecting, or bringing people together. At this price point, luxury has to expand what’s possible for the owner.” That expansion only works when the design feels cohesive. Katrina credits Candelaria Design with taking an original residence and adding a second wing, guest house, garages and new living spaces that remained consistent in style and scale despite being completed at different times. Mark, in turn, credits the larger collaboration. “I have set the State Record several times over my 44 year career. What made this special was the team.” Katrina identifies the final formula in three words: “privacy, trust, and materials.” Discretion, relationships and care matter as much as the physical home. She also points to Katie Bowe’s interiors, which she says felt “calm, cohesive, and timeless.” The record was not secured by a go-kart track alone, but by an estate that delivers spectacle without sacrificing serenity, hosts a crowd without losing privacy and expands without ever feeling pieced together. Of course, no $40.238 million sale happens in a vacuum. The final luxury feature is the address itself: PV. “Paradise Valley is still behind the coastal markets when it comes to larger ‘mega mansions.’ There are more buyers for

50

C UR B A P P E A L | HO M E + D E SIGN

homes at this level than there are homes available. If people have the vision and courage to build them, I believe the market will continue pushing to new price levels,” Katrina says. She is equally candid about Arizona’s national position. “We’re still not Palm Beach with $100 million sales. We could use a beach, but our lifestyle rivals the top luxury markets in the country. I believe prices will continue to climb.” Is this sale an outlier? She does not think so. “I believe each record sale will eventually be surpassed by the next. There is so much wealth moving to Arizona, and our state continues to get better with time.” Mark completes the sentence “A $40 million home is defined by” with a philosophy rather than a feature. “The value one attributes to the experience and the way they want to live every day.” And when Katrina is asked what this moment means for Arizona, she answers in the same transparent, unapologetic language that defines her take on the entire sale. “Blast off. Look out ahead, Paradise Valley will be the most expensive ZIP code in the country within the next decade.” candelariadesign.com katrinabarrett.com

Strength Is Always in Style MEET FOUR REMARKABLE CHILDREN WHOSE COURAGE, JOY AND PERSONALITIES SHINE FAR BEYOND THEIR DIAGNOSES. PHOTOGRAPHY BY SCOTTSDALE EVENT PHOTOGRAPHY September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. In our annual Style Issue, we are celebrating four children who remind us that strength never goes out of style. In the pages ahead, you will meet four young warriors who have faced diagnoses, treatments and hospital visits no child should ever have to understand. But they are also so much more than what they have endured. They are funny, fashionable, curious, creative and full of personality. Cancer is part of their stories, but it does not define them. The four remarkable children share more than extraordinary courage. Each is part of the Amanda Hope Rainbow Angels family, an organization bringing dignity, comfort and hope to children navigating cancer and other life threatening illnesses while surrounding their families with critical support and community. Katie Wilson, owner of Garage Boutique & Concept Store in Old Town, styled each look.

HER STORY

RILEY-QUINN SOLIS

Age: 2 Diagnosis: Optic Nerve Glioma As told by her mom

Riley-Quinn Solis was 7 months old when she was diagnosed with an optic nerve glioma. She has now spent nearly 18 months on chemotherapy, but cancer is only one chapter of her story. At 2 years old, Riley-Quinn is joyful, curious and determined, with a personality far bigger than her tiny frame. She loves dinosaurs, music and bubbles and carries her baby dragon everywhere. One moment captures her spirit best. After an especially difficult day of treatment, music began playing in the hospital. Riley-Quinn smiled and started to dance, reminding everyone around her that joy can exist even in the hardest places. Through countless appointments, procedures and treatments, she has shown her family a strength they never imagined possible in someone so young. Riley-Quinn has taught them that bravery is not always loud. Sometimes, it looks like a little girl holding her baby dragon, smiling through another hospital visit and choosing joy. Her story embodies the mission of Amanda Hope Rainbow Angels: bringing dignity, comfort and hope to childhood cancer warriors and their families. Riley-Quinn is so much more than her diagnosis. “I hope Riley-Quinn always knows that she is brave, strong, deeply loved and wonderfully unique. Most of all, I hope she knows that she has been a light to everyone fortunate enough to know her, and that her story is one of courage, hope, happiness and endless love.”

“While cancer is part of his story, it has never been the first thing I think about when I think of Jack,” his mom shares. “I think about his huge personality, his contagious smile, and the way he brings joy to every room he walks into.” At 20 months old, Jack was diagnosed with hepatoblastoma after his parents took him to the emergency room. His complex case eventually brought the family to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, where he received a life-saving liver transplant. Over seven months, Jack endured multiple rounds of chemotherapy, multiple surgeries and 161 consecutive days as an inpatient. After his transplant, Jack was surrounded by monitors. Still, he smiled with his eyes, squeezed his parents’ hands and found little ways to hum along to Frozen. “In one of the hardest moments of his life, his joy still found a way to shine through,” his mom remembers. Since coming home, Jack has relearned how to walk, run and eat. Amanda Hope Rainbow Angels has continued supporting the entire family through practical assistance, parent mentorship, counseling and opportunities to create joyful memories together. CONTINUED >

WHAT SHE’S WEARING

Zoey is wearing a Balmain Paris sweater from Garage Boutique & Concept Store, paired with relaxed denim and playful leopard-print flats. The look is polished yet approachable, proving that casual style can still make a sophisticated statement.

HER STORY

I was a normal, healthy ninth grader. I went to school, danced and hung out with my friends. Then last October, I started experiencing horrible pain in my back and legs. After about a month of doctor appointments and blood work, they finally figured out what was happening. I started chemotherapy the very next day. Chemo changed how I saw myself on the outside. Having my nails done helps me feel pretty and confident again. I also express myself through what I wear. I like choosing pieces that show my interests, especially from my collection of Twilight shirts. My bedroom and bathroom are another reflection of who I am. I love interior design, so I decorated both spaces with all my favorite things. Almost everything is pink. Amanda Hope Rainbow Angels has supported both me and my mom. Every Thursday when we are at the hospital, they bring snacks and create an opportunity for the parents to sit together, talk and offer one another advice. Having that support means a lot to us. Cancer has shown me that I can do hard things. I can be scared and brave at the same time. It has also taught me that life is not a checklist and everything does not have to get done right away. Sometimes, life is about the little things, like making cupcakes. If I could describe my heart, it would be love and sparkles. I try to lead with love because I want everyone to be happy and healthy. Most of all, I want people to know that I am strong. Not even cancer can slow me down.

WHAT SHE’S WEARING

Kennedy is wearing a timeless black-and-white tweed dress paired with Rock Star tennis shoes and a Garage Boutique “Mini Me” handbag, giving a classic silhouette a playful twist. Katie styled the look to celebrate Kennedy’s individuality, proving that sophistication and imagination can go hand in hand.

HER STORY

One night while reading bedtime stories, Kennedy’s parents noticed an unusual white glow in her eye. They took her to the pediatrician the very next day, and within days, their fear became reality. Kennedy was diagnosed with retinoblastoma, a rare eye cancer. After initially being referred to specialists in Los Angeles, her family transferred her care to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York. There, Kennedy began intra-arterial chemotherapy in hopes of saving her eye. She has responded incredibly well, and the family continues traveling to New York each month as her doctors work to eliminate every remaining cancer cell. Beyond her diagnosis, Kennedy is a vibrant, expressive and very loving little girl. She sings, dances, cares for her dolls and stuffed animals, and adores everything pink. She lights up when given the freedom to make her own choices, whether she is packing her suitcase for another medical trip or assembling her own plate of snacks for movie night. One dinner perfectly captured her playful spirit. Kennedy ordered carrot sticks for her meal, requested a second helping and then began interpretive dancing around the restaurant to Pearl Jam. When dessert arrived, she insisted on carrot cake and accepted nothing less. Her cancer journey has revealed extraordinary bravery, curiosity and compassion. Kennedy wants to understand her treatments and appointments, but she also remains deeply concerned about the well-being of those around her. She reminds her family to slow down, live in the moment and care for one another through small, intentional gestures, like an unexpected hug or a pretend cup of tea delivered from her playset.

September is Leukemia and Lymphoma Awareness Month. For Valley residents, a blood cancer diagnosis once meant a long drive for care. It meant an even longer stay away from home and a treatment plan developed elsewhere, far from the people who love you most. Not anymore. Nancy Veatch found world-class care has come at City of Hope Phoenix, part of one of the nation’s largest and most advanced cancer organizations. A DIAGNOSIS, A DECISION, A TEAM In August 2022, Veatch was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and soon learned that her diagnosis also included the added complexity of chronic lymphocytic leukemia and small lymphocytic lymphoma. Veatch had already researched where she wanted to be treated before her diagnosis was even confirmed. On the day she found out, she picked up the phone and called the City of Hope Cancer Center Phoenix. “They told me, ‘Don’t you want to wait a day? You just got diagnosed,’” Veatch remembers. “I said, ‘No, I don’t have time to waste.’” Within a week, she had a full care team in place, and soon after, she began a six-month immunotherapy treatment; grateful for a modern option that let her avoid traditional chemotherapy altogether. BRINGING RESEARCH AND TREATMENT TO PARADISE At City of Hope Cancer Center Phoenix, Dr. Tibor Kovacsovics has spent more than decades researching and treating blood cancer, and he’s candid about how far the field has progressed. “It’s a field that has dramatically changed over the past 30 years, thanks to clinical research and, even, basic research,” says Dr. Kovacsovics, chief of hematology at the Phoenix campus. “The prognosis and the outcome have significantly improved across probably all diagnoses.”

Blood cancers require a different toolkit than other cancers, including specialized medications, cellular therapies, and often a bone marrow or stem cell transplant. City of Hope has performed more than 20,000 such transplants nationwide since 1976, a legacy of experience the Phoenix campus now draws on directly. WHY “CLOSE TO HOME” MATTERS Ask any caregiver who has driven a loved one hours away for treatment, and they’ll tell you that distance matters. Long drives take a toll on families, disrupt work and school schedules, and add stress to a situation that can seem overwhelming. That’s the gap Dr. Kovacsovics and his team are working to close for Arizona families. His message to Paradise Valley families facing a blood cancer diagnosis is clear: “We want patients to know they don’t have to drive across the Valley for world-class care. They can receive modern treatment, access clinical trials, and get transplant services right here.” A THIRD ACT, LIVED FULLY Veatch’s own path back to feeling like herself ran through nutrition, hydration, sleep, time outdoors, and movement — starting with a stationary bike she’d owned before her diagnosis. Meditation led to yoga, yoga led to cycling, and a first goal of ten minutes “in the saddle eventually” turned into something much bigger. She thinks of her life in chapters: childhood and college, then parenthood, and career. “I sort of see this part of my life as my third act,” she says. “I feel like I’ve been given a chance because I’m still here. And, so my motto is ‘here for it.’” Along the way, she’s had plenty to celebrate, including a memorable afternoon rounding the bases at a City of Hope Home Run for Life event, where local survivors CONTINUED > S EP TEMB ER 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . are honored on the field at a Major League Baseball spring training game. It’s one highlight among many in her third act, and one she’s spending in service to others. As a City of Hope Cancer Fighters Ambassador, Veatch volunteers online, helping fellow patients build the same healthy habits that carried her through treatment. HOPE, DELIVERED LOCALLY With a world-class team bringing leading-edge cellular therapies to the Paradise Valley area, the throughline remains unchanged: blood cancer care no longer requires leaving home to find hope. Ask Nancy Veatch what carries a family through a diagnosis like hers. “I hope that you reach out to those around you and find hope,” she says. “Because at the end of the day, it’s the thing that carries us through.” To learn more, visit cityofhope.org/phoenix

Dear Friends,

Wow. Thirty years!

When I opened Jennifer’s Catering, many Valley streets were lined with pastures. Today, they are lined with plazas, and I have happily rolled with the times, the trends, and every culinary adventure along the way. For three decades, you have welcomed me into some of the most meaningful moments of your lives, including countless gatherings that began with, “What are we going to feed everyone?” You have trusted me to cater your events, and I cannot begin to tell you how much that means to me. The Valley has become an extension of my home, and all of you have become family. They say the key to someone’s heart is through their stomach. If that is true, I may have collected quite a few keys over the years! As I step into this next chapter, Jennifer’s Catering continues at full speed, bringing exceptional food & hospitality to homes, offices, venues, & events throughout the Valley. Now, I am thrilled to add something completely new to the Jennifer’s family. Many of you remember The Market by Jennifer as a restaurant. Today, The Market is being reimagined as a dedicated event venue. Think of it this way: one family, two ways to celebrate.

Jennifer’s Catering brings the party to you. The Market by Jennifer gives you a place to bring the party to us. At The Market, we provide the food, beverages, indoor space, outdoor space, and warm hospitality. You bring the people, the personality, and the special touches that make your event completely yours. Best of all, there is no separate rental fee. Simply meet the food and beverage minimum for your cocktail hour, curated dinner, or special gathering. Like a cat, I have lived nine lives, plus a few bonus ones. This may be my most exciting one yet! After thirty years of Jennifer’s Catering, I am so excited that The Market by Jennifer now gives me the chance to welcome you into our place, too. Two ways to gather. Two ways to celebrate. One Jennifer’s family ready to make it delicious. With love, laughter, and plenty of parties ahead,

Trust, Intention & Daytime Fireworks The first local look at Jay Allen and Renée Lynn’s intimate wedding and the Alzheimer’s mission behind their marriage. ARTICLE BY NADINE BUBECK | PHOTOGRAPHY BY DMYTRO SHPYNDA

Renée Lynn did not need flowers. When the wedding planners asked what she would hold instead of a bouquet, her answer was simple. “I’m going to hold Jay’s hand.” That sentiment defined Renée’s June wedding to country artist and The Voice alum Jay Allen. More than 6,000 miles from their Valley home, the couple exchanged handwritten vows overlooking the Adriatic Sea in Montenegro. There were no guests and no reception timeline. Even their officiant stood nearly 30 feet away. The photographers and videographers kept such a distance that Renée barely knew they were there. “I wanted to be a little girl at that moment and have my fairy tale with just my husband,” she says. “No bystanders. No spectators. I just thought it was Jay and me in the most gorgeous country, overlooking this beautiful water and island.” For a woman accustomed to putting her two children, CJ and Charly-Belle, first, privacy was not about excluding anyone. Renée asked for their blessing before leaving. “When your kids are around, you’re always a mom,” she explains. “Everything revolves around them. I wanted one day when I could let my guard down.” She wore the first dress she found online and did not try it on until two days before leaving for Europe. Her shoes came from her daughter’s closet. She did not care about flowers or most traditional wedding details. Jay did. Renée jokingly calls him the “bridezilla” of the two. He arranged the floral arch and bouquet behind her back and handled the photography and videography. Renée had one nonnegotiable: daytime fireworks in every color of the rainbow. The fireworks erupted behind them during a dramatic dip kiss, creating one of the day’s most striking images. The newlyweds never actually saw them. “We heard the explosion, but we were in our kiss,” Renée says. “By the time he pulled me back up, they had almost disappeared.” For Jay and Renée, style is not about following tradition. It is about creating a life that feels true to them. “I don’t think we really do anything traditionally,” Jay says. “We kind of forge our own path.” The wedding was intimate, but the purpose behind it reaches far beyond the two of them. That purpose feels especially meaningful, as September is World Alzheimer’s Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness and challenging the stigma surrounding Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. Jay first built a national audience touring with artists including Jake Owen and Cole Swindell before appearing on The Voice. But music became far more personal after his mother, Sherry Rich, developed early-onset Alzheimer’s. CONTINUED >

Jay wrote “Blank Stares” about watching his mother disappear into the disease while believing she was still somewhere inside. When audiences struggled to connect with the painful subject, he brought Sherry onstage and sang directly to her as she rested her head against his chest. A video of the moment received millions of views, drawing national attention and launching what would become Jay’s life’s work. “Blank Stares” later reached No. 2 on iTunes in the United States and No. 1 in Australia, but for Jay, its meaning has never been measured by charts. “It is my calling. It is my purpose,” he says. “I have accepted it, and I’m honored to be this voice.” In fact, Jay initially declined invitations to appear on The Voice for three consecutive years because he feared the opportunity would shift attention away from that mission. “It seemed self-centered, and I had such a pure heart around what I was doing,” he says. “I wanted to maintain that.” He eventually realized national television could place his message before millions more people. Today, he says his sole reason for continuing to perform is to spread Alzheimer’s awareness and bring comfort to families living through the disease.

72

I NSP IR E D BY | L I FE + C ULT U RE

That purpose was woven directly into the wedding day. Jay and Renée were already traveling to Europe because he had been invited to perform during a Mediterranean cruise raising funds and awareness for Alzheimer’s. Hours after exchanging vows, Jay returned to the ship in his wedding suit and performed an Alzheimer’s awareness concert. Renée joined him onstage in her gown. “It was this full-circle moment,” Jay says. “Our relationship is with purpose. We’re always combining the personal with our purpose as much as we can.” It was also through that mission that Jay and Renée first met. Renée’s aunt invited Jay to perform at a charity event at her Scottsdale home. Renée skipped the first event, unmoved by the promise of meeting someone from The Voice. “They said, ‘Jay Allen is performing,’ and I said, ‘And?’” she recalls. “I didn’t care.” Her mother attended, met Jay and called Renée afterward. “She said, ‘I don’t know why, but you have to meet this man. I think I found your perfect match,’” Renée says. “I told her she was crazy.” When Jay returned for another event six months later, Renée’s father was in the hospital. At her mother’s insistence, she left his bedside, changed clothes and attended alone. She missed Jay’s entire performance, met him afterward and had no idea he was the singer. There was no instant romance. They followed each other on social media and continued living separate lives. Renée’s father died approximately two weeks later. A year passed. Jay became sober, ended an unhealthy relationship and moved into a condo in downtown Nashville. “I worked through all these things for myself personally. There was a lot of clarity, and a lot of tough decisions had to be made,” he reflects. Then, while both were watching the Super Bowl alone, miles away, Jay saw Renée’s social media post and sent her a message. “I saw it and thought, ‘Oh, God. He just slid into my DMs,’” Renée says. “But I opened it, and we started talking and never stopped.” Jay knew he wanted to approach the relationship differently.

“I had made a lot of poor choices in my life. With her, I was going to take it slow and do it the right way.” For Renée, opening herself to a relationship required trust. She had been single for seven years and was happy building a life around her children and family. “The entire time, I thought, ‘This guy can’t be real,’” she says. “But the moment we started talking, we never stopped.” When Jay eventually traveled to Scottsdale, he knew. “It was so evident that this girl was supposed to be my wife,” he says. “Everything had led to this person.” Both believe their late parents played a role in the timing. The couple often jokes that Jay’s mother and Renée’s father are now “in cahoots.” “Renée reminds me so much of my mother. I have such warmth and comfort with her.” Today, Renée has stepped fully into Jay’s mission. Before performances, the couple often visits memory care communities at no cost to spend time with residents and staff. Jay sings, dances and talks with families. Renée is usually just outside the frame. “What you don’t see in the videos is that Renée is right behind me,” Jay says. “We’re crying with people and laughing with them. Sometimes I have to say, ‘Renée, come on,’ because she gets so involved with one person. Her heart is that big. We are a team in what we do.”

Jay & his mom

Renée now oversees much of Jay’s touring and scheduling while raising her children and traveling with him. Jay describes their life as a family endeavor and a “package deal.” “We are intentional with our relationship,” he says. “We want to honor God, make an impact in the world and honor the parents and grandparents we’ve lost to Alzheimer’s.” If intention guides their decisions, trust holds everything together. “I trust her with my livelihood,” Jay says. “She handles important conversations and contracts. With the kids, she trusts me. We’ve leaned in, and now they’re my kids as well.” That trust does not mean they never disagree. It means they have created a way to work through it. In their garage sits a sofa that once belonged in Jay’s Nashville condo. There was no room for it inside their Valley home, so it found a new purpose. They call it the therapy couch. “We don’t want the kids hearing us have any sort of heated discussion,” Jay says. “If we have a disagreement, we go out to the garage, sit on the couch and work it out.” The couch may say more about the style of their marriage than anything they wore at their wedding. “We’ve made the decision to go all in with each other, and there is no backing out. I don’t question her, and she doesn’t question me.” The couple plans to celebrate with family and friends in Arizona this fall. But their marriage began exactly as they wanted it to: alone together, guided by faith and attached to the purpose that first brought them into each other’s lives. For Jay and Renée, what is in style? Trust. Intention. Protecting their peace. And choosing a life that feels right, even when it does not look traditional to anyone else. “If we can check those boxes, we know it is a good choice.”

THE Cullum Style OF CARE The Concierge Service Behind Effortless Homeownership PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED CULLUM HOMES

No two days at Cullum Care are ever the same. One day, the team may prepare a home before its owners arrive. The next, they may coordinate grocery shopping, carry out a wellness check at the request of a concerned family member, or help reunite a lost puppy with its owners. Some requests are less routine. The team has met transport trucks to receive clients’ vehicles and even taken Ferraris out for a drive while seasonal homeowners were away, ensuring the cars did not sit idle for too long. On another occasion, the team was entrusted with caring for a child’s fish. When a power outage threatened its aquarium, they went beyond checking the equipment or calling the family with an update. They took the aquarium home and cared for the fish until power was restored. Such requests may sound far removed from luxury home management. However, they reveal exactly what Cullum Care was created to do. “As a division of Cullum Homes, we don’t just care for homes,” the Cullum Care team says. “We care for the people who live in them.” Cullum Care grew from a philosophy that has guided Cullum Homes since Rod and Kim Cullum founded the company in 1985. For more than 40 years, the family-owned builder has been known for custom residences shaped around the people who will live in them. But the company recognized that even the most thoughtfully designed home continues to require attention long after construction is complete. Luxury, after all, should not end at move-in. Homeowners wanted one trusted team they could call instead of coordinating a revolving list of vendors, appointments and property needs. Cullum Care became that single point of contact, offering luxury home management and personalized concierge services to Cullum homeowners as well as owners of other luxury residences throughout the Valley.

H OU SE CA LL | HO M E + DE SIGN

Each client is paired with a dedicated Cullum Care Representative who learns the home in detail, from its materials and mechanical systems to the rhythms and preferences of the people living there. That familiarity matters in a custom home. Natural stone, specialty finishes, custom millwork, integrated technology, advanced lighting, water features and sophisticated HVAC systems cannot always be maintained with a standard checklist. Arizona adds another layer of complexity, with extreme heat, dust, intense sun and monsoon storms placing constant pressure on roofs, drainage systems, landscaping and exterior finishes. For clients enrolled in the VIP Maintenance Program, the process begins with a comprehensive assessment. From there, Cullum Care develops a plan based on the home’s systems, maintenance needs and the homeowner’s lifestyle. A primary residence may require one level of attention, while a seasonal property that sits unoccupied for part of the year requires another. Regular home checks are designed to catch the details a homeowner might not see. The team monitors plumbing, HVAC performance, irrigation, battery backups, water heaters, drainage and smart home systems while watching for subtle signs of wear. During one inspection, the team discovered a slow plumbing leak hidden behind cabinetry. There were no visible signs inside the home, but identifying it early prevented extensive water damage and a far more expensive repair. Drainage is another easily overlooked concern, particularly during monsoon season. A blocked roof or landscape drain may seem minor until water begins moving toward, rather than away from, the home. Protecting the residence, however, is only part of the service. Cullum Care can stock groceries and beverages before a homeowner arrives, accept packages, coordinate floral arrangements, make restaurant reservations, oversee holiday decorating, prepare for guests and events or handle personal shopping. When a client is away, the representative can schedule vendors, provide access, oversee the work and send photos and updates. The result is not simply a well-maintained property. It is a home that is ready to be lived in the moment its owners walk through the door. That may be the most meaningful definition of luxury: not more things to manage, but the freedom to enjoy what you have created. For Cullum Care clients, peace of mind comes from knowing someone is paying attention before a small concern becomes a costly problem and that when something unexpected happens, there is one trusted call to make. 8 CLOSET MISTAKES,

S o l ve d Smart Fixes that make Beautiful Closets Work Better

86

H OM E U P DAT E | HO M E + D E SIGN

A closet can be beautiful and still fail you. Impressive cabinetry, luxury hardware and perfectly staged shoes mean little if getting dressed remains difficult. For Adam Bender, owner of Dream Closets Arizona, the smartest closet is not designed around square footage or resale value. “Design your closet around your everyday routine, not everything you own,” he says. After more than 25 years in the industry, Adam still loves transforming cluttered spaces into organized, functional retreats, often in a single day. “A well-designed closet reduces stress, saves time and makes every day easier.” Here, he reveals the most common mistakes and the design choices that solve them. MISTAKE 1: Trying to Keep Everything The most common closet problem starts before design: too much clothing. “Most people wear about 20% of their wardrobe 80% of the time,” Adam says. Keeping items that no longer fit or get worn buries favorites, crowds shelves and makes even a large closet feel small. SOLUTION: Edit Before You Organize Take an honest inventory before planning the new closet. Keep frequently worn clothing, shoes and accessories within easy reach. Move seasonal or rarely used items higher or farther away. Donate anything that no longer serves you. MISTAKE 2: Designing for Resale Homeowners often make decisions based on what an imaginary future buyer might want rather than how they currently live. The result may look universally appealing, but it rarely functions perfectly for the people using it every day. SOLUTION: Design for Your Life Today Start with your routine: what you reach for, where laundry lands, how you plan outfits and what you need to store. A closet built around real habits streamlines mornings, protects your wardrobe and delivers value every day. MISTAKE 3: Prioritizing Beauty Over Function Floor-to-ceiling cabinetry, glass displays and premium hardware may create an impressive first impression, but luxury disappears quickly when the closet cannot manage laundry, accessories or daily clutter. SOLUTION: Build Function Into the Beauty Adam considers five features essential: custom drawers for concealed storage, base molding for a built-in finish, illuminated glass cabinets for display, personalized accessories for ease and built-in hampers to hide laundry. MISTAKE 4: Underestimating Drawers Homeowners frequently prioritize hanging space and open shelving, only to discover they have nowhere to conceal undergarments, activewear, jewelry or smaller accessories.

Open storage can quickly become visual clutter when too many items remain on display.

Clients frequently dismiss valet rods during the design process because they seem unnecessary.

SOLUTION: Invest in Custom Drawers Custom drawers and decorative base molding deliver the greatest return. Drawers organize small items and reduce visual clutter, while molding gives cabinetry a permanent, architectural finish.

SOLUTION: Add Features You Will Use Every Day A space-saving valet rod pulls out to hold tomorrow’s outfit, collect dry cleaning, assist with packing or stage clothing while dressing, then disappears when not in use. “It’s one of those features clients don’t think about initially but end up using every day.” Another favorite is a full-length rotating mirror that pulls out from the cabinetry, eliminating the need for a dedicated wall. Other additions include velvet-lined jewelry drawers, watch and sunglasses organizers, tie and belt racks, handbag displays and hidden safes.

MISTAKE 5: Treating Lighting as an Afterthought Even the most thoughtfully designed closet can feel flat or unfinished without proper lighting. Dark corners make clothing difficult to see, while display cabinetry loses much of its impact. SOLUTION: Integrate Lighting Into the Design Integrated LED lighting is one of the fastest ways to transform a closet from ordinary to exceptional. Lighting placed within cabinetry makes clothing and accessories easier to see while turning handbags, shoes and collectibles into focal points. Paired with glass doors, warm wood tones, premium hardware and natural stone surfaces, lighting creates the feeling of a private boutique. MISTAKE 6: Dismissing the Small Accessories Large islands and illuminated cabinets may receive the most attention, but some of the smallest features have the greatest effect on daily life.

88

H OM E U P DAT E | HO M E + D E SIGN

MISTAKE 7: Using a One-Size-Fits-All Layout A closet designed for a corporate professional should not function the same way as one created for an athlete, a couple or a growing child. Standardized layouts often waste valuable space by ignoring the type of wardrobe being stored. SOLUTION: Customize Every Zone Adam tailors each closet to its users. Couples receive distinct personal areas within one cohesive design. Professionals get more hanging space for workwear, while athletes gain storage for uniforms, shoes, duffels and workout gear. Adjustable systems

can also shift from triple hanging for toddlers to double hanging as children grow, without replacing the closet. MISTAKE 8: Waiting for a Complete Renovation An inefficient closet does not always require a full redesign. Homeowners often delay making improvements because they assume meaningful change must be expensive or extensive. SOLUTION: Begin With Three Changes First, remove anything you no longer wear. Second, replace mismatched hangers with one high-quality, uniform style. Matching hangers create an immediate sense of order and allow clothing to hang at a consistent height. Third, introduce a few targeted accessories such as drawer dividers, pull-out baskets or a valet rod.

ROOFING THAT RISES ABOVE Trusted residential and commercial roofing services— backed by expert craftsmanship and customer service that sets the standard. NEW BUILDS | REPLACEMENTS | REPAIRS | MAINTENANCE

BENDER’S BUCKET LIST CLOSET With no budget limit, Adam would create a boutique-style dressing room with floor-to-ceiling backed cabinetry, integrated lighting, illuminated glass displays, molding, natural stone countertops and luxury hardware. He would add velvet-lined jewelry storage, watch winders, a hidden safe and pull-out hampers. Each Dream Closets AZ project begins with a complimentary in-home consultation. A designer studies the client’s wardrobe, routines and frustrations, then creates a custom 3D plan. Clients compare materials, colors, hardware and accessories, receive a detailed proposal and can visit the Scottsdale showroom. Installation is typically scheduled within four weeks. Dream Closets handles demolition and generally finishes in one day. For Adam, the reveal is the reward. Once secondary to blinds, flooring and landscaping, closets are becoming wellness-focused priorities that transform private storage into a calm retreat. dreamclosetsaz.com

THE MILLIONDOLLAR CLOSET PHOTOGRAPHY BY LUX IMAGE BY COLTON SIMON/TAYLOR HALL O’BRIEN

THE ART OF STAGING A CLOSET WITH $1.5 MILLION IN FASHION AND WATCHES

92

A RT IST ’S PA LE T T E | HO ME + D E SIGN

“We knew our approach to closet staging and styling had to transcend industry standards.” The most memorable room inside a recently sold $10.5 million Paradise Valley estate wasn’t the great room, the chef’s kitchen or even the spa-inspired primary suite. It was the closet. More than a million dollars’ worth of luxury fashion, fine watches and accessories turned an already impressive dressing room into the home’s biggest conversation piece. Approximately 150 meticulously curated pieces, valued at an estimated $1.5 million, lined the shelves. Listed and sold by Katrina Barrett, the Belgian Contemporary residence captivated with Venetian plaster, Calacatta Viola marble and panoramic mountain views. Yet it was this unexpected room that stole the show.

“We knew our approach to closet staging and styling had to transcend industry standards. It only made sense to have a little fun while showcasing timeless design, cohesive, impeccable natural materials, a restrained palette and a truly quiet-luxury aesthetic,” says Lauren Pappo, co-founder of Atelier La Scala, a luxury house specializing in privately curated, Italian-crafted collections. For Lauren, the collaboration was personal. Rossland Investment Group, the family-owned developer behind the home, is her family’s business, and she serves as one of its principals. That connection gave her a uniquely exciting point of entry into the closet project. Working alongside interior designer Kylie Wolfe of Wolfe Studios and Bryan Temen, her co-founder at Atelier La Scala, she helped create something rarely seen, even in our ultra-luxe real estate market. Instead of staging the space with folded sweaters and empty shelves, they transformed it into a designer boutique worthy of Fifth Avenue. “This wasn’t a closet built around recognizable labels. It was curated with some of the world’s most coveted names in luxury fashion and horology. Loro Piana. Kiton. Ermenegildo Zegna. Audemars Piguet. Brunello Cucinelli, often called the ‘King of Cashmere,’” says Lauren. Among the collection’s most revered names was Patek Philippe, widely regarded as one of the world’s most prestigious watchmakers and known for its famous philosophy: “You never actually own a Patek Philippe. You merely look after it for the next generation.” Lauren also points to Audemars Piguet’s Royal Oak as one of the most influential luxury sports watches ever created. CONTINUED >

Among the first pieces to capture attention was a one-ofone men’s overcoat by Kiton crafted entirely from 100 percent vicuña, often called the “Gold of the Incas.” Considered the rarest and most valuable natural fiber in the world, vicuña can only be shorn every few years, making garments made from it extraordinarily scarce. “The one-of-one coat carries an estimated value of $45,000, but its rarity is what makes it remarkable,” Lauren shares. “Handcrafted in Arzano, Italy, it required more than 50 hours of work and over 1,800 individual handmade steps to complete.” Just steps away sat the collection’s most valuable piece, a Patek Philippe Nautilus 5711/1A valued at approximately $145,000 on the secondary market. Long considered one of the world’s most coveted watches, the Nautilus has become as much an investment as a timepiece. Nearby, an Audemars Piguet Royal Oak 15400ST, valued at approximately $45,000, added another icon of modern watchmaking.

94

A RT IST ’S PA LE T T E | HO ME + D E SIGN

The craftsmanship didn’t stop there. An Ermenegildo Zegna cashmere and castorino jacket, valued at $17,500, paired luxurious cashmere with a waterproof beaver lining, proving exceptional craftsmanship can also be practical. A limited-edition Brunello Cucinelli Solomeo Coat, valued at $11,600 and crafted from 90 percent cashmere and 10 percent silk, reflected the same understated palette found throughout the home. “It was also a signature design personally owned by Brunello Cucinelli himself,” Lauren says. Completing the collection was a Brunello Cucinelli gown valued at $10,995, bringing softness and movement through a paillette-embellished mohair and wool bodice flowing into a silk skirt. Designer garments hung from authentic branded hangers. Jewelry rested on neutral linen display busts, while glass-topped drawers presented pocket squares, scarves, ties, belts, sunglasses and watches like collected objects. A moody pendant illuminated the floating Calacatta Viola marble vanity and custom backlit mirror, with deep painted oak millwork creating a rich backdrop. Together, the details ensured that “every piece is displayed the way it deserves to be seen,” notes Bryan Temen. “While we anticipated individual pieces receiving reactions, surprisingly, the entire closet seemed to receive this response from nearly every visitor who explored the space. When each piece represents a portion of a carefully curated exhibition, people notice,” says Lauren. Buyers had the opportunity to purchase select wardrobe pieces, allowing the carefully curated lifestyle to continue long after closing. “A closet of this caliber isn’t consumption - it’s a portfolio,” Bryan adds. In a home filled with extraordinary architecture, it wasn’t the marble, the mountain views or even the craftsmanship that visitors talked about most. It was the closet.

WHAT’S IN STYLE? STEM CELLS.

WHAT’S EVEN MORE IMPORTANT? UNDERSTANDING WHY. Women today are looking beyond how long they live to how well they live. Strength, mobility, vitality and independence are becoming the new measures of healthy aging. One area attracting attention is mesenchymal stromal cells. Researchers are studying their potential roles in immune signaling, inflammatory response and tissue repair. The science is promising and still evolving, which makes informed decision making essential. Stem cell therapy requires more than access to cells. Cell source, processing, viability, laboratory standards, physician oversight, patient candidacy and realistic expectations all matter. At Auragens, every protocol begins with a medical review and considers the patient’s condition, health history, imaging, inflammation profile and goals.

Auragens uses human umbilical cord mesenchymal stromal cells sourced from donated tissue following healthy births. The cells are cultured and expanded in its AABB accredited laboratory in Panama City, where the complete chain of custody remains under Auragens’ oversight. Panama is more than the destination. It is where Auragens brings its laboratory, medical team, treatment and recovery experience together in one dedicated setting. Patients typically follow a personalized five day program supported by medical consultations, wellness modalities, hotel accommodations, transportation and concierge coordination. Because the most modern approach to health is not chasing every new trend. It is asking better questions, understanding the science and choosing care thoughtfully.

TANYA TALKS REAL ESTATE • WEALTH • PERSPECTIVE

Beyond the Listing There’s no denying that a beautifully styled home sells faster and often for more money—regardless of the market. This is especially true in the luxury space. When it comes to selling a home, there are really only two ways to get buyers to act: through their hearts or through their wallets. So how do we get buyers to shop with their hearts? We focus on the details. The finishes, the design, the flow of the floor plan, the way a home is staged, and how it makes someone feel the moment they walk through the door. I often tell clients that the cost of staging is usually less than their first price reduction. Style lives in the details, and so does great marketing. Every agent can market a home, but some do it better than others. The way a property is presented to the market matters. How does it appear online? What is the first impression? Does the photography tell a story? Do the showings engage all five senses? What can we do to help a buyer fall in love before they ever start analyzing the numbers? Of course, not every home has been recently renovated, and not every seller wants to invest in updates before selling. That’s where strategic pricing becomes just as important as design. The goal is to create an opportunity that feels impossible to ignore. How can we position the home to attract the most buyers? How can we make the asking price the most inviting invitation on the block? When buyers begin envisioning what a home could become—and when they see others doing the same—that’s when emotion takes over. That’s when they stop simply shopping and start imagining a life there. And when emotion meets a sense of urgency, buyers are far more likely to act. At the end of the day, style is about more than aesthetics. It’s about presentation, perception, and creating a connection. Whether through thoughtful design, strategic staging, or intentional pricing, the homes that stand out are the ones that tell a compelling story. And in real estate, just like in life, great style is often what makes something truly unforgettable. www.hausofreal.com | 623.680.6022

From deep reds to faux fur and crystal embellishments, eight standout looks defining fall.

THE AUTUMN EDIT Fall 2026 puts personality back into the wardrobe. Amy Yount, owner of Old Town’s AMY Atelier, predicts fur and feather trims, voluminous outerwear, embellishment, rich fabrics and bold color will replace pared-back dressing. Red is the defining color, from bright cherry to deep merlot. Amy recommends skipping the subtle accent and wearing it head to toe. Other hot colors include fuchsia, aquatic green, burnt olive, muted clay, and buttery yellow. Chocolate brown, toffee, soft ivory and navy are the season’s most useful neutrals. The must-have accessory is not a particular bag or shoe. It is suede. In the Valley, suede is also an easy way to make an outfit feel like fall without dressing for temperatures that have not arrived. The season’s most important investment is the jacket or coat. Amy suggests feminine silhouettes, dramatic texture and Western details. The Western trend continues, but one strong piece is enough. Fall 2026 runways are also bringing back sculpted waists, peplums, cropped jackets, and relaxed tailoring, while velvet, fringe, gloves and ornate evening bags bring an Art Deco influence after dark. Amy’s best advice for updating a wardrobe? Use a stylist. The smartest update is not always buying more. It is knowing how to make every piece work harder. shopamyatelier.com

AWARD-WINNING PURPOSE: CHANGING LIVES THROUGH EDUCATION Recognition is meaningful. Impact is transformational. This summer, the Steele Family Foundation and the WISE Scholarship Program were honored as recipients of the 2026 Canadian Choice Award in the Charities category, recognizing an organization committed to creating lasting educational opportunities, meaningful mentorship, and long-term support for young people. While the award celebrates years of dedication, those behind WISE view the recognition differently. For them, the honor belongs to every WISE scholar who chose perseverance over circumstance, every mentor who invested their time, every donor who chose to invest in the future, and every community partner who helped open a door that otherwise may have remained closed. “I am deeply honored to accept the Canadian Choice Award for Charities on behalf of the WISE Scholarship Program am Steele deeply Family honoredFoundation,” to accept thesaid Canadian Choice and“IThe Stacey Steele, Award Charities on behalf ofProgram. the WISE “This Scholarship founder offor the WISE Scholarship recognition Program and The Steele Family Foundation,” saidfamilies, Stacey reflects the incredible dedication of our scholars, Steele, volunteers, founder of the WISE Scholarship “This partners, and supporters whoProgram. believe in recognition reflects the dedication of our creating opportunities forincredible young people to thrive. Unlike traditional scholarship organizations that primarily provide financial assistance during a student’s senior year, WISE begins working with scholars as early as their freshman year of high school. Through individualized mentorship, leadership development, wellness resources, college preparation, and earned scholarship opportunities, WISE helps students build the confidence and skills needed to succeed in higher education and beyond. At the heart of the program is the WISE Portal, an innovative platform that connects scholars to personalized learning,

mentorship, financial literacy, college planning, individualized student profiling, and wellness resources throughout their lifelong educational journey. The platform reflects a simple philosophy: education should never be limited to the classroom.

Awards recognize what has already been accomplished. Communities help determine what comes next. Whether through a financial contribution, corporate partnership, volunteer mentorship or simply sharing WISE’s mission with others, every act of support helps create opportunities that extend far beyond a single scholarship. It helps build futures. Supermodel Kim Alexis on Life as one of the World’s Most Photographed Cover Girls

PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY KIM ALEXIS

Before Kim Alexis knew fashion, fashion knew her. A self-described tomboy planning to study pharmacy, she was pulled from charm school at 17 and asked to model in New York. She said no. Two days after turning 18, Kim arrived in Manhattan. Within days, she was sent to Rome for the haute couture collections and landed the cover of Italian Bazaar. Within three months came

“Right away, I had the cover of Glamour. I had my first national ad for a makeup company within three months.” an Elizabeth Arden campaign, followed by hundreds of covers and status as one of the world’s most photographed women. Yet she rarely looked in the mirror. “I was never really a fusser,” she says. “I was always going to be the natural girl with the braid, outside playing.” What looked like a dream felt different from within. “I was just busy. It was work.” Later, as Good Morning America’s fashion editor, Kim discovered a new passion. “I loved broadcasting more than modeling because I got to talk.” Since moving to Scottsdale in 2017, she has continued reinventing. At 65, she launched Unexpired, featuring guests including Jay Leno, Kathy Ireland and Roger Clemens. Now 66, the mother of three and grandmother is focused less on preserving an image than passing something forward. In our September Style Issue, Kim reveals what happened behind the covers, the lessons fame taught her and why she is nowhere near finished.

YOU NEVER DREAMED OF BECOMING A MODEL. As a little girl, I was into my schoolwork, played clarinet, and was a swimmer. I never thought about fashion. TWO DAYS AFTER TURNING 18, YOU MOVED TO NEW YORK. My first job was in Rome for Italian Bazaar. There was only one cover, and I got it within about four days. I came back to New York and started working. Within months, I had the cover of Glamour. I had my first national ad for a makeup company within three months, which is unheard of. IT LOOKED AS THOUGH YOU WERE LIVING A DREAM. I had come from high school a month before. I would hear from my friends who had gone to college. They were out having fun, having pizza and beer, and I couldn’t. I was worried about my weight. themindsetofmatter@gmail.com V@mindsetofmattercoaching Podcast: The Mindset Mirror Connection

We didn’t have many tools to understand health. There weren’t tons of health clubs or health food stores. We would talk to other models and try to learn. I remember doing juice fasts and putting different masks on my face. WHEN YOUR FACE BECAME A MULTIMILLIONDOLLAR BUSINESS ASSET, WHAT HAPPENED TO YOUR PRIVATE RELATIONSHIP WITH THE MIRROR? I never really looked in the mirror much. If I’m putting on my own makeup to go out, it doesn’t take more than 10 minutes. YOU HAVE SAID YOU NEVER FELT AS THOUGH YOU COMPLETELY BELONGED IN FASHION. There were a lot of moments that confused me or had me scared or feeling like I didn’t belong. You had to do a lot of self-analyzing to figure out where you belonged, what you thought and how to survive in the business. You made friends with the hair and makeup artists. But this was the beginning of AIDS. In 1979, I lost one of my friends to AIDS, and we didn’t understand it. We were asking, “What did he die of?” We couldn’t figure it out. I don’t even know if they had a name for it. We didn’t understand what to call his death. It was a very strange time. There was a lot of fear among people who were worried about what would happen next. OF THE HUNDREDS OF COVERS, WHICH ONE CHANGED THE WAY YOU SAW YOUR CAREER? The one where I thought I had finally made it was my first American Vogue cover. I did that with Avedon. When I got that cover, I felt like, “Ah, now I can be taken seriously.” Then I had three Vogue covers in a row. Brooke Shields and I would trade off quite a bit, but one time I literally had three months in a row. THE INDUSTRY WAS BUILT AROUND REJECTION. Yes, back then, we had go-sees. Now they’re called castings. You would hand them your book, and sometimes they would look through it, not even look at you and hand it back. Other people would look at your book, talk to you and ask about the pictures. Guess which bookings I got? The ones who barely looked. They had already made up their minds. The people talking to you felt bad because they knew they weren’t going to give you the job. I had a bunch of negatives. Sometimes you partied and stayed out too late. The next day, you didn’t look good and might lose a client. I learned that I didn’t like feeling that way. I learned to police myself and decide it wasn’t worth it. CONTINUED >

“Then I had three Vogue covers in a row. Brooke Shields and I would trade off quite a bit, but one time I literally had three months in a row.” — KIM ALEXIS I was not perfect. I had many bad nights, and I would cry myself to sleep. But there is that inner resilience and inner strength that nothing is going to knock me down. AT 27, YOUR EXCLUSIVE ULTIMA II CONTRACT ENDED. I didn’t know what to do with myself because I had been paid not to work. I had been paid to be exclusive with Revlon unless it was editorial. I couldn’t go backward in modeling and do all the catalog work I had done before. That led me into broadcasting. I signed with William Morris, and they sent me on a booking for Good Morning America. At the end of the meeting, the woman said, “So, do you want the job?” I said, “What job?” She said, “Fashion editor of Good Morning America.” I said, “Sure, I’ll try it.” She said, “Okay, you’re live tomorrow morning.” Joan Lunden was on maternity leave. When she came back, I went to her and said, “Listen, this is your station. This is your show. I want to learn from you.” She took me under her wing and taught me everything I needed. I loved broadcasting more than modeling because I got to talk. I enjoyed giving information, inspiring and creating. WHAT DID YEARS AT THE CENTER OF FASHION TEACH YOU ABOUT STYLE? I realized everyone had their own opinion. Because I traveled so much, my must-have item was a beautiful Japanese men’s black jacket, almost like a tuxedo jacket. I spent $800 on it and wore it everywhere. Now, my style is sporty. I have a lot of golf clothes. I’m not a designer girl. HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT AN INDUSTRY IN WHICH A MODEL’S FOLLOWING CAN MATTER AS MUCH AS HER FACE? The biggest difference is that it is not so much that you get the job because of your face. You get the job because of your followers. If you don’t have a good social media following, you’re not going to get booked. I’m a little resentful. I was late to the game. I thought social media was something that was going to come and go.

106 LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | AUTO + MARIN E

To me, it was a lot of, “Look at me. Here I am. Aren’t I great?” That is not my personality. It was very difficult for me to celebrate something and put it out there. I was a private person. Social media knocks all those walls down. I’m old school. I’m going to hold out for the bigger endorsement deals, not the little collaboration deals. YOU BALANCED AN EXTRAORDINARY CAREER WHILE RAISING THREE SONS. I always tried to put them first. I knew I was strong and could take care of myself, so I made sure they were fine. If they were fine, then I was fine. YOU MOVED TO ARIZONA AFTER MARRYING JEFF. Yes, it is a great God story. Jeff felt comfortable and safe. I always say wherever he is, that is where home is. WHY DID YOU CALL YOUR PODCAST UNEXPIRED? I love celebrating people and their successes while reminding younger people that a rut is not the end. You may be an undiscovered band, a struggling comedian or simply headed somewhere new. Instead of retiring, I started a business. I love discovering what drives people to keep going. That is what Unexpired means. I’m not going to lie down and die. I still have something relevant to give. WHAT IS YOUR PHILOSOPHY ON AGING? I don’t know why so many people spend so much time and money on their skin. If you take care of the inside and you eat clean, the texture and tone of your skin work better. WHAT DO YOU MOST WANT YOUNG WOMEN ENTERING FASHION TO UNDERSTAND? Don’t be desperate to get into this business. Always have something else to fall back on. Set healthy boundaries and be able to say no. HOW DO YOU DEFINE SUCCESS NOW? Being available and being willing to try new things. instagram.com/the_kimalexis

D RESSED TO T HRIL L The new Lamborghini Urus SE Performante Pairs 801 Horsepower with Unmistakably Personal Style

PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY LAMBORGHINI NORTH SCOTTSDALE

108 AU TO C LU B | AUTO + MARIN E

Lamborghini has never made a case for blending in. Still, the new Urus SE Performante understands something important about style: the strongest statement is often found in the details. The carbon fiber is exposed, the exhaust is titanium, and even the contrast stitching can be customized. Every choice has a purpose, even when that purpose is simply to make your heart beat a little faster. “The Urus SE Performante is designed for the driver who wants the sharpest, most aggressive version possible,” says Kimberly Snyder of Lamborghini North Scottsdale. “It takes everything the SE does well and turns it up another notch.” And it does not take long to feel the difference. The plug-in hybrid powertrain produces approximately 801 horsepower and 737 pound feet of torque, enough to send an SUV from zero to 62 mph in just 3.3 seconds, a number more commonly associated with supercars. It is also roughly 70 pounds lighter and generates 23 percent more downforce than the Urus SE, making it feel sharper and more planted on the road. A dual chamber air suspension, revised chassis tuning and updated transmission calibration make the Urus feel more precise through corners. Redesigned bumpers, spoilers, a new hood and an aggressive rear diffuser sharpen its profile before the engine ever has the chance to announce itself. This is not simply an SUV with more power. It is an SUV with more attitude. For Kimberly, the driver drawn to it usually shares that same quality. “They are adrenaline seekers who do not merely enjoy driving. They look for an excuse to drive. They are competitive achievers, whether entrepreneurs, athletes or creators, with the kind of mindset that is always searching for the next level.” That personality feels particularly at home in the Valley, where luxury rarely stays parked. The Urus SE Performante can move from a morning meeting to a desert drive, dinner at The Global, or a weekend escape without surrendering the feeling of a super sports car. “It’s luxury meets an active lifestyle.” The vehicle is unapologetically bold, but the drama does not have to come from excess. Its appeal lives in the tension between statement making combinations and understated design. A customer can choose an expressive exterior color and keep the interior restrained, or begin with a sophisticated palette and add flashes of personality through carbon fiber, colored accents and matching cross stitching. With Lamborghini, style is never one size fits all. Customers can begin with the online Lamborghini Configurator, experimenting with colors, materials,

wheels and finishes. For those who want to take personalization further, Lamborghini Lounges offer the opportunity to create something entirely their own, including a bespoke color. It feels less like selecting a vehicle and more like commissioning one. “The exterior may capture the first glance, but the smallest interior details can complete the entire look. Carbon fiber accents, a carefully chosen interior color or perfectly matched stitching can transform the cabin into something unmistakably personal.” The best part of luxury is making it feel personal. And at Lamborghini North Scottsdale, that goes well beyond the vehicle. “We are a small team; a family that truly cares about our customers. We are not just here to sell you a luxury vehicle. We are about creating relationships.” Those relationships can lead far beyond the Scottsdale showroom. Lamborghini North Scottsdale keeps clients connected through exclusive driving experiences throughout the year, from taking on an ice track in Quebec to driving through Zion National Park or traveling the scenic roads between Wyoming and Montana. They’re even planning a curated event around the Urus SE Performante this October, so stay tuned. “The Urus SE Performante is for someone who appreciates how it looks standing still but is always looking for an excuse to drive. It blends performance with everyday versatility, so you can drive it year round without ever losing the thrill.” That duality may be its most stylish quality. lamborghininorthscottsdale.com

21 Questions from Inside The Guest House Kitchen

Chef Todd Miller In true PVCL fashion, each month we play a spirited game of 21 Questions with one of the Valley’s most esteemed chefs. This month, we’re pulling up a seat with Chef Todd Miller of The Guest House, the Scottsdale Quarter social dining and wine garden known for elevated New American cuisine. 1. WHAT IS YOUR EARLIEST MEMORY IN THE KITCHEN WITH YOUR GRANDFATHER? I was 9 or 10 years old, and my grandfather and I watched The Frugal Gourmet religiously. After one episode, we decided to make dinner so my grandmother wouldn’t have to. We recreated the featured dish: meat-and-rice balls in a rich tomato gravy. My grandfather was one of my greatest idols, and simply being beside him in the kitchen meant everything.

and cuisines worldwide. STK rolled it all into one big burrito: volume, seasonal specials, incredible energy and my first bicoastal opening. Learning to scale while maintaining consistency was pivotal. 5. YOU’VE MANAGED CULINARY TEAMS OF UP TO 200 PEOPLE. WHAT KIND OF KITCHEN CULTURE DO YOU WORK TO CREATE? I believe in leading by example and never considering myself above anyone. My role is to guide, support, inspire and push our team toward greatness while holding them to the same standards I set for myself. 6. WHAT IS THE HARDEST LEADERSHIP LESSON YOU’VE LEARNED? At times, I take criticism personally when it is simply another point of view. I still work on that. Learning to see things from different angles makes you a better person. 7. WHAT MADE SCOTTSDALE THE RIGHT PLACE FOR THE GUEST HOUSE? Scottsdale is a mecca for great food and amazing clientele, so it was a no-brainer. With pro sports, spring training, the Waste Management Open and Barrett-Jackson, Scottsdale is on the big stage. CONTINUED >

2. YOU’VE SAID COOKING SHOWS HELPED SPARK YOUR INTEREST IN FOOD. It wasn’t just one chef or show. I was inspired by all the cooking programs on public television, including Julia Child, The Frugal Gourmet, Great Chefs of the West and Yan Can Cook. 3. YOU WERE WORKING AT DEER VALLEY RESORT WHEN FOOD BECAME MORE THAN AN INTEREST. At Deer Valley, I was introduced to thoughtfully prepared food made fresh every day, and that’s where the spark began. About two years in, while working at Stein Eriksen Lodge, I began creating daily specials and working with some of the finest ingredients available. That’s when I realized this was what I wanted to do with my life. Food is more than a job to me. It’s a passion and a way of life, and every day is a new adventure waiting to unfold. 4. PRIME STEAKHOUSE AT BELLAGIO, FOUR SEASONS LAS VEGAS AND STK REPRESENT VERY DIFFERENT CHAPTERS OF LUXURY HOSPITALITY. WHAT DID EACH EXPERIENCE ADD TO THE CHEF YOU ARE TODAY? Prime Steakhouse taught me to handle volume without sacrificing service. Four Seasons taught me not to say no to guests and exposed me to cultures S EP TEMB ER 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . 8. WHEN SOMEONE WALKS INTO THE GUEST HOUSE FOR THE FIRST TIME, WHAT DO YOU WANT THEM TO FEEL? Our energy and vibe set us apart. Layered lighting builds the atmosphere, while house-curated music and live performances immerse guests in the experience before they order a thing. 9. HOW DO YOU CREATE A MENU THAT CAN MATCH AND BUILD WITH THAT CHANGING ATMOSPHERE? We created an approachable menu that is not stuffy or so highbrow guests cannot understand it. Some dishes are finished tableside, making the experience immersive and fun. 10. WHAT DOES “MODERN AMERICAN” MEAN IN YOUR KITCHEN? I’ve called my food Modern American for as long as I’ve run kitchens. I update old favorites, sometimes playfully and sometimes seriously, using the best ingredients without overcomplicating them. 11. WHAT IS THE SECRET TO REINVENTING COMFORT FOOD? I never overcomplicate comfort food or stray too far from what it is. If I’m making meatloaf, I’m not turning it into seafood meatloaf. Our chicken tenders are distinctly ours but still true to a chicken tender. 12. WHICH DISH ON THE MENU FEELS MOST DISTINCTLY YOU? I’m a Libra, so I don’t have just one. But I’ll pick the spicy rigatoni because it reflects how I feel about food. Everything, from the pasta to the sauce, is made in-house. It is simple but requires attention, time and love. Kind of like me. 13. TUNA AND CAVIAR CONES, BUTTERMILK CHICKEN TENDERS, SPICY RIGATONI AND WAGYU PASTRAMI CAN ALL SHARE THE SAME TABLE. WHAT DOES THAT RANGE SAY ABOUT HOW PEOPLE WANT TO DINE NOW? Our guests want something new and different, but familiar enough to feel comfortable ordering it. 14. HOW DO YOU KNOW WHEN A PRESENTATION GENUINELY ADDS TO THE FOOD? Anything finished table-side elevates the food and makes the experience fun and memorable. Our safety net is simple: we never cut corners or use inferior products. 15. WHICH DISH ON THE CURRENT MENU LOOKS EFFORTLESS, BUT IS ACTUALLY THE MOST DEMANDING FOR YOUR KITCHEN TO EXECUTE? The Feuilleté Laminated Bread. Our bread is a three-day process and is something that needs constant attention or it will not turn out the ways it intended. 16. WHAT HAVE SCOTTSDALE DINERS TAUGHT YOU SO FAR? Scottsdale diners have refined palates and know great food. 17. WHAT IS ONE UNEXPECTED FOOD AND WINE PAIRING YOU WISH MORE GUESTS WOULD TRY? I have a sweet tooth and love a great dessert pairing. Our Cherry Chocolate Rocky Road combines fresh cherries, rich chocolate crémeux, chocolate ice cream, candied almonds and marshmallows. The cherry on top? An aged Port to complement those flavors.

18. YOU’VE APPEARED ON THE TODAY SHOW, GOOD MORNING AMERICA, BEAT BOBBY FLAY, THE REAL HOUSEWIVES OF NEW YORK CITY AND CHOPPED. WHAT IS MOST INTIMIDATING? The full dining room. The shows are fun, but those guests are spending their hard-earned money and deserve our best. 19. WHICH DINING TREND ARE YOU READY TO SEE DISAPPEAR? I’m ready to move past overhyped food that prioritizes presentation over the product. I think the next era of restaurants will focus on healthier, lighter and more protein-forward dishes. 20. YOU COLLECT ANTIQUES AND ART FROM YOUR TRAVELS. WHICH PIECE IN YOUR COLLECTION HAS THE BEST STORY? While living in the Maldives, I brought home two Malaafaiys, nearly 100-year-old food boxes I found there. Antiques do not influence my plating, but art strongly shapes how I create and present new dishes. 21. WHAT DO ROBERTA AND EMMANUELLE ASK YOU TO MAKE AT HOME, AND WHO GIVES YOU THE MOST HONEST REVIEW? My wife loves food, has a refined palate and is a great cook. But my daughter, Emmanuelle, is the most honest. welcometgh.com

Ka Laʻi Waikīkī Beach’s $100 Million Transformation

CONDO STYLE LUXURY, REIMAGINED FOR GENERATIONS. PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY KA LA’I WAIKIKI BEACH

116 T R AV E L J OU R N A L | TRAV E L

Ka Laʻi Waikīkī Beach sits pretty in Waikīkī, steps from the sand, warm water and sea turtles that glide surprisingly close to shore. Yet what makes the hotel special begins upstairs. Ka Laʻi offers the space and ease of a private residence with everything you want from a luxury resort. Its 238 residential style studios and suites feature full kitchens, generous living areas, spa inspired bathrooms and private lanais overlooking the ocean or the green canopy of Fort DeRussy Park. For families, that space changes the entire rhythm of a vacation. Breakfast does not require getting everyone dressed and out the door. Children can settle into the living room while parents enjoy coffee on the lanai. Grandparents, parents and grandchildren can travel together without every moment feeling crowded or overly scheduled. It is condo style living, elevated. There is a difference between a beautiful hotel room and a place where a family can comfortably live for several days. Ka Laʻi gives everyone room to spread out, come back together and settle into a pace that feels less like managing a trip and more like enjoying one. Now, following a $100 million property wide transformation, one of Waikīkī’s most livable luxury hotels has also become one of its most stylish.

Ka Laʻi remained fully operational throughout the phased renovation, which reimagined everything from the accommodations and restaurants to the pool, spa and public spaces. It was a complete transformation of the guest experience, from arrival to opening the lanai doors. It also marks the first Hawaiʻi property for LXR Hotels & Resorts, Hilton’s collection of distinctive luxury hotels shaped by the character of their destinations. To lead a transformation of this magnitude, Irongate Group selected Bryan O’Sullivan Studio, with architectural support from Guerin Glass Architects. Bryan O’Sullivan may not be a household name, but the rooms he has designed are among the most talked about in luxury hospitality. Forbes called him “London’s buzziest interior designer,” and his work includes the Red Room at The Connaught, suites and spaces at Claridge’s, and interiors at The Maybourne Beverly Hills and The Maybourne Riviera near Monte Carlo. His studio is known for creating glamorous spaces that are polished without feeling precious. Curved forms, rich materials, custom furniture and historical references appear throughout his work, but no two properties feel copied from the same playbook. CONTINUED >

That was especially important at Ka Laʻi. The goal was not to bring London style to Waikīkī. It was to give the hotel a stronger identity rooted in Hawaiʻi, without relying on the predictable design language so often used in tropical resorts. O’Sullivan and his team began with research. Much of it centered on anthropologist Peter H. Buck’s Arts and Crafts of Hawaii, an extensive study of traditional Hawaiian craftsmanship, construction and everyday objects. The studio used that history as a foundation, then interpreted it through materials, shapes, lighting and furniture created specifically for the property. On the ground floor, existing stone columns, elevator shafts and architectural elements were retained and layered with warm wood paneling, bespoke joinery and raffia toned wall coverings that subtly reference traditional weaving. Lava stone, one of the most defining materials in the redesign, appears throughout the hotel. It grounds the reception desk, consoles and terrazzo floors, while a glazed lava stone surface adds a polished finish. Curved sapele wood details move across the walls and into the custom furniture, giving the spaces softness and flow. Lighting carries its own connection to place. Woven rattan, punched metal and parchment shades draw from Hawaiian forms and materials. Behind the reception desk, palm frond fixtures were inspired by ceremonial paddles associated with Honolulu’s Outrigger Canoe Club. Even the smaller pieces hold meaning. Cast blackened brass side tables with orange seeded glass tops reference the intricate geometry of traditional plaited Hawaiian fans. Custom outdoor chairs feature woven backs and sculpted legs influenced by Hawaiian forms. On the lanais, glazed ceramic tables are hand painted with tropical palm motifs. Art deepens that connection. A curated collection includes works by Marco Rountree, Christine Skaggs and Big Island ceramic artist Suzanne Wang. Wang’s sculptural installation, Kūkulu Ola, anchors the collection and explores the elemental forces that connect all living things. Her ceramic totems are also placed throughout the hotel, each representing a different pillar of Hawaiian culture. They give the expansive property moments that feel personal and handmade. The residential accommodations continue the same material story, with warm wood tones, teak, lava stone and custom furnishings adding character without sacrificing comfort. The rooms feel finished and sophisticated, but they are still meant to be lived in. That distinction matters at Ka Laʻi. Kitchens are fully equipped and genuinely useful. Living rooms give families somewhere to gather after the beach. Private lanais extend the accommodations outdoors, with sweeping views. The hotel gives guests the option to do as much or as little as they want, which may be one of the most underrated forms of luxury. The sixth floor brings everyone back together. Set above Fort DeRussy with beach views, the reimagined level moves easily from breakfast to cocktails and dinner. Bespoke banquettes are positioned toward the ocean, while koa wood paneling, custom rugs and plaster friezes with palm motifs by artist Brian Robles add depth. A custom Murano glass architrave introduces a touch of Art Deco glamour. The bar is wrapped in green glazed lava stone tile and backed by mirrors that catch the changing light. Three new dining concepts led by Executive Chef Yoshi Ohata now anchor the culinary experience. The Kini Room is the resort’s intimate, 86 seat signature restaurant. Tambour wood paneling, mosaic columns, richly colored terrazzo and custom furniture create a moodier atmosphere than the sun filled spaces surrounding it. The menu draws from Pacific Rim and global influences, with dishes including Kagoshima A5 Wagyu sushi, slow braised lemongrass lamb shank and Kini Kini Pie made with Kona coffee.

Muse Lounge serves as the resort’s social hub, pairing cocktails with oysters, caviar and shareable dishes. Ilikea’s Mai Tai combines ginger liqueur, kaffir lime and caramelized pineapple, while the Ka Laʻi Old Fashioned is made with single barrel rum, chocolate bitters and orange peel. Bloom Cafe & Restaurant takes over in the morning with a garden inspired setting overlooking Waikīkī. The menu includes guava cream cheese waffles with brûléed banana and Hawaiian honey. Spa Ka Laʻi has also been refreshed, with treatments rooted in traditional Hawaiian wellness practices and locally inspired ingredients. The infinity pool and revitalized outdoor spaces offer another place to slow down, with Waikīkī Beach just steps away when the ocean calls. Yet even after a $100 million transformation, the hotel’s greatest strength may still be its people. “Returning guests will recognize the sense of calm that has always defined Ka Laʻi, along with the warmth and generosity our team brings to every interaction,” says Managing Director Scott Ingwers. “For new visitors, this transformation introduces a more contemporary expression of Hawaiian hospitality, where thoughtfully designed spaces and vibrant gathering places complement the personalized services that have always been at the heart of who we are.” To celebrate the transformation, Ka Laʻi Waikīkī Beach is offering a limited time Discover Luxury package with up to $1,000 in resort credit toward the hotel’s new dining, spa and resort experiences. hilton.com/en/hotels/hnlwiol-ka-lai-waikiki-beach

Living the FLOW PHOTOGRAPHY BY PHYLLIS LANE

After decades spent photographing celebrities, athletes, CEOs and artists, Valley resident Phyllis Lane learned that the most revealing moments usually happen when people stop performing. “Image is what we project,” she says. “Authenticity is what remains when there’s nothing left to prove.” That insight is at the heart of her new book, Living the Flow. Rather than offering a formula for fixing your life, the book helps readers recognize where they are forcing, resisting or losing themselves in pursuit of who they think they should be. “I didn’t write this book because I figured life out,” Phyllis says. “I wrote it because life kept asking me to let go of who I thought I needed to be.” As relationships, business and dreams changed, what she discovered was that surrender is not giving up. It is releasing the belief that everything can, or should, be controlled. Living in flow does not mean everything is going well. It means meeting life as it is, including the delayed flight, difficult conversation, unexpected change or relationship that is not what you hoped it would be. Resistance asks, “Why is this happening?” Presence asks, “Now that this is here, how do I meet it?”

Va l l e y p h o t o g r a p h e r P h y l l i s L a n e’s n e w book invites readers to loosen their grip, t r u s t t h e m s e l ve s a n d m e e t l i fe a s i t i s .

The book also explores a question many people wrestle with: When should we keep pushing, and when is it time to let go? Phyllis believes the answer often lies in the energy behind the effort. “Persistence comes from love. Force comes from fear. Am I creating from inspiration or proving my worth?” Her years behind the camera helped shape these lessons. Photographing high-profile people revealed that success does not eliminate insecurity, fame does not guarantee fulfillment and nearly everyone carries the same private questions: Am I enough? Am I on the right path? Am I living authentically? Beneath the titles and public images, she found a universal desire not simply to be admired, but to be seen. It is a fitting message for a Style Issue because Phyllis believes true style has very little to do with what someone wears. “Style isn’t what you wear. It’s how you move through the world,” she says. “It’s kindness without performance. Confidence without comparison. Simplicity without needing attention.” That is ultimately what Living the Flow offers readers: permission to loosen their grip, trust themselves, and stop treating life as a constant effort to become someone better. “You don’t have to become someone else to experience peace,” Phyllis says. “You simply have to stop abandoning yourself.” Photography taught her how to see. Life taught her how to be. Her new book asks readers to do both, not by reinventing themselves, but by returning to who they were before they believed they had something to prove. IG @phyllislane

Live with Intention. Build with Integrity

FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT GOES STREET Sprayground’s David BenDavid Reimagines the

PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY SPRAYGROUND

Architect’s Blueprints, Furniture and Forms as Collectible Backpacks & Luggage

Beyoncé, Rihanna, Bruno Mars, Kevin Durant, Snoop Dogg, 50 Cent, Chris Brown, Kendall Jenner and Paris Hilton have all carried it. And we’re not talking about a Birkin. Rather, a backpack. In 2010, Bronx-born artist David BenDavid looked at one of fashion’s most functional accessories and saw something different: a blank canvas. His first Sprayground design, the instantly sold-out “Hello My Name Is” backpack, traded safe and sensible for bold and expressive. Then came the now-iconic Shark Mouth motif, limited-edition drops and a cult following spanning more than 90 countries. Collaborations with the NBA, Porsche, Star Wars, Spike Lee and Shaquille O’Neal followed. So did the runways of New York and London Fashion Week. Somewhere along the way, BenDavid did more than build a global brand. He made backpacks cool.

128 B ACK STAGE | L I FE + C ULT U RE

Now, he has found a creative icon famous enough to rival Sprayground’s celebrity roster: Frank Lloyd Wright. For Sally Russell, Director of Licensing for the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation, Sprayground’s unexpected interpretation is precisely what makes the collaboration work. “They’ve taken Wright’s architectural language, the geometry, the structure, the bold sense of form, and turned it into something you can carry. It’s playful, a little unexpected and a great way to introduce Wright’s ideas to a new generation that might discover Organic Architecture through fashion first,” she says. The limited-edition Sprayground x Frank Lloyd Wright collection transforms Wright’s blueprints, furniture, stained glass, interiors and architectural forms into sculptural backpacks and statement luggage.

WHY DO YOU THINK YOUR STUFF RESONATES WITH ARTISTS, ATHLETES AND ENTERTAINERS? I think people are naturally drawn to things that feel genuine. We never created products for celebrities. We created them for anyone who appreciates bold creativity. It just so happened that many celebrities connected with that same spirit. That spirit has always centered on refusing to blend in, which makes Frank Lloyd Wright an unexpectedly perfect creative counterpart. WHAT MADE FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT FEEL LIKE THE RIGHT PARTNERSHIP? Frank Lloyd Wright did not simply design buildings. He challenged how people lived inside them, designing architecture, furniture, interiors and landscapes as one complete experience. At Taliesin West in Scottsdale, the desert was not treated as scenery. It became part of the architecture itself. I’ve always admired creators who aren’t afraid to dream differently, so collaborating with his legacy felt less like a partnership and more like a creative conversation across generations. For our Style Issue, we scored an exclusive 1:1 with BenDavid about celebrity influence, creative instinct and what happens when one disruptor enters the world of another. SO TELL US... HOW DID DAVID BENDAVID BECOME DAVID BENDAVID? I’ve always believed creativity is a gift meant to be shared. As a kid, I was constantly getting in trouble for doodling instead of paying attention in class, but those sketches became the foundation of my future. After studying at the School of Visual Arts in New York, I realized backpacks were an untapped canvas for self-expression.

WHAT DID IT MEAN TO EARN THE FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT FOUNDATION’S TRUST? It meant a great deal because trust like that has to be earned. We understood we weren’t just designing a collection. We were helping carry forward the legacy of one of history’s greatest creative minds. That responsibility inspired every decision we made.”

YOU LAUNCHED SPRAYGROUND WHEN BACKPACKS WERE LARGELY VIEWED AS FUNCTIONAL. WHAT DID YOU SEE THAT THE REST OF THE INDUSTRY DIDN’T? Bags were viewed as purely functional, not as fashion. That’s when the light bulb went off. I realized they could become a canvas for my art. It was a simple idea that challenged an entire category. Backpacks were no longer merely something to carry; they became wearable art, collector pieces and a visible declaration of individuality. CONTINUED > S EP TEMB ER 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . David BenDavid

We worked closely with the Foundation, studying the intention behind Wright’s lines, materials, patterns and structures. WHAT WAS YOUR VISION FROM DAY ONE? My vision was to honor Frank Lloyd Wright’s legacy by translating his way of thinking into something people could live with, travel with and experience every day. I wanted each piece to feel like functional art. HOW DID YOU TRANSLATE HIS WORK INTO WEARABLE PIECES? We focused on his geometry, patterns, materials and belief that design should exist in harmony with its surroundings rather than simply recreating buildings. Blueprint blues, midcentury terracottas and geometric motifs appear throughout the collection. Wright’s floor plans become fashion canvases. Architectural layers create multidimensional forms. One backpack draws inspiration from the spiraling structure of the Guggenheim Museum, while others reinterpret Wright’s stained glass, murals and graphic language through Sprayground’s unmistakably bold lens. But the collection’s most conversation-starting piece may be the Chair Backpack, a sculptural design framed by one of Wright’s most enduring philosophies.

130 B ACK STAGE | L I FE + C ULT U RE

WHAT INSPIRED THE CHAIR BACKPACK? What fascinated me most was that Frank Lloyd Wright didn’t stop at designing the building. He designed the entire experience, from the architecture to the furniture and interiors. That chair represented his philosophy of total design. Reimagining it as a backpack felt like honoring the idea that great design shouldn’t live in one place. It should move with people. We reimagined Frank Lloyd Wright’s architectural blueprints as patterns, transformed his iconic furniture into sculptural backpacks and created modular, three-dimensional pieces inspired by his home and buildings. With luggage, the goal was to make travelers feel like they were carrying a piece of architecture through the airport; impossible to overlook. WHICH PIECE DO YOU THINK WOULD MAKE FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT SMILE? The Chair Backpack. Not because we recreated his work, but because we dared to reinterpret it. Frank Lloyd Wright believed great design should continue evolving, and I’d like to think he’d appreciate seeing one of his ideas inspire something entirely new. IF YOU COULD ASK FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT ONE QUESTION, WHAT WOULD IT BE? When you looked at an empty space, what did you see that everyone else missed? Personally, I think that’s where true creativity begins. franklloydwright.org
