We’ve got the WM Phoenix Open, Super Bowl LVII (read our story for the info about its related events!), Concours in the Hills, Arizona Fine Art EXPO, Celebration of Fine Art, Innings Festival, Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show—and so much more. And, that’s on top of the usual list of galas, gatherings, shows, and concerts around town. When I think of all that’s going on, I realize how lucky I am to live here. People from around the world will travel to the Valley this month to enjoy these events. And for us, they’re just in our backyard. While the visitors are here, they’ll eat at our amazing restaurants, many of which are helmed by top-notch celebrity chefs. They’ll shop at our momand-pop stores and our flagship designer destinations. They’ll take in the beauty of our majestic mountains and stunning sunsets. And they’ll stay at our world-renowned resorts. All in the place that we call home. Also here at home are talented people such as artist Jason Adkins, whose works have been showcased everywhere from Restoration Hardware to celebrity photo shoots to the Netflix show “Obliterated.” We also highlight three locals who are giving back to the community and an inspirational book written by local Darleen “Coach Dar” Santore. I look forward to seeing you out and about this month! Enjoy this fabulous place we call home. Yours,

“A Return to Love.” I just finished reading this book. It’s not a new one, but a great one! If you haven’t read it, I highly recommend it. If you’ve read it, it’s worth reading 20 times again! It seems appropriate to bring this up as we are in the “month of love”—February. This book encapsulates so well what we really need in this world—love. Those who really know me are well aware of my passion around this topic. It’s so very important to embrace this. Miracles happen through love, kindness, and a serving attitude. Some of my favorite quotes from the book “A Return to Love”: “Miracle-workers are not in the business only to make money; they are in business to inject love into the world.” “Love makes you more attractive.” “Joy has no cost. Do what you love. Do what makes your heart sing and never do it for the money.” “The key to happiness is the decision to be happy.” “Love waits on welcome, not on time.” All of these ideas stem from one principle—love. Love big, love unapologetically, and love with an open heart, and then you shall find peace. Be grateful, be kind, and live and love BIG, Tammy Fellows Owner/Publisher

Genius STROKES OF
His work is seen, appreciated, and owned by art enthusiasts and aficionados across the country. But when one of Jason Adkins’ pieces made it into a high-end magazine as part of a photo shoot for celebrity and business owner Portia de Rossi, out of all the artist tools and equipment at his disposal, its creation originated from something a bit less highbrow and more mainstream—a mop. The March 2022 issue of Santa Barbara Magazine featured de Rossi—the wife of Ellen Degeneres and a former actress—and her company, General Public. General Public seeks out high-end caliber work by talented artists who deserve the spotlight and should be accessible to the public. The company’s mission to bring equity to the art audience is accomplished through partnerships like its one with home furnishings store Restoration Hardware. Adkins was among the artists General Public was collaborating with. In the magazine photo spread, de Rossi is elegantly striking a pose next to one of Adkins’ large-scale works, wearing a dress in the same pattern that replicated the strokes and texture of the piece. “As you go through life, you’ll become more you than anything else.” “She wore a dress that mimicked the painting and stood next to it. Just like that, the painting started selling well,” Adkins says. This finish was done by Adkins dipping a mop into black paint and running it over the white canvas in what appears to be random broad strokes. But the entire composition indicates it’s not as random as it is inspiration-driven, with eye-catching sweeping strokes that leap off the canvas. This process is an example of Adkins’ edge and innovation that has propelled him to the heights of a competitive industry. It’s become a popular piece in Restoration Hardware’s catalog, with requests for Adkins to do commissioned versions for individual buyers. It’s also brought a new way of painting and artistry into the public spotlight. However, this would not have happened had Adkins followed his initial reaction to the original that started it all. “It was ugly. Horrible. It was just about experimenting,” he recalls. “I was going to junk it.” Known for its contemporary sophistication that flaunted neutral palettes, Restoration Hardware’s audience was not the type to go for what Adkins had done in a bold shade of magenta. Thoughts of the home decor chain even considering it seemed ridiculous to him. Then, the people at General Public saw something that went beyond color. They asked Adkins to ship it over. They copied the texture of the mop strokes but changed the color to make it more Restoration Hardware-friendly. “It told me how hard I am on myself sometimes. There are pieces for everybody. What may be junk to me is a treasure to somebody else,” Adkins says. And just like that, Adkins’ works found their way into homes across the country. His passion for creative tools continues with palette knives, paint rollers, and brooms in his arsenal. Soon Adkins’ works can also be spotted on television, computer, and smartphone screens worldwide in “Obliterated,” the much-anticipated
Netflix action-comedy series from the creators of the smash hit “Cobra Kai.” Because details are kept under wraps until its release, Adkins cannot reveal much—but he can say his 4-foot by 6-foot painting is done in blue and white and will be featured in one of the show’s main meeting rooms as the background with the primary characters. A native of Tennessee, Adkins has been painting since he was a young child. He moved around a lot after college but settled in Phoenix in 2018. “I was searching for meaning, just experiencing new cities and meeting new people,” Adkins says of his wanderlust ways, which dovetailed with his talent and love for art. “I was always into creating, making things, and using my imagination. With all of that comes life experiences, and experience in experimenting.” He talks about the freedom of thought and expression that comes with being an independent professional artist. At 49, he knows what he wants and how to achieve it, with complete responsibility and without any oppressive outside influence. He was represented by a Los Angeles art gallery for about two years, but left it over a decade ago to go completely solo. “I really just wanted to be alone and figure out things on my own instead of somebody constantly critiquing me,” he says. Sometimes he sees familiar brush strokes, patterns, or textures in others’ work. When asked how he feels about newer artists replicating his technique, Adkins says he is fine with it. In a way, he views it as helping up-and-comers come into their own. “Through my life experiences, I know that, as they discover who they want to be, they will eventually incorporate some strokes I do into a passion of their own. And their work will evolve,” Adkins says. “As you go through life, you’ll become more you than anything else.” Jason-Adkins.com

FROM WOMEN’S CAUSES TO AN AUDIO GUIDE TO HELPING DOGS, IT’S ALL ABOUT SPREADING THE LOVE
Sprays for Strays SpraysForStrays.com She was traveling the globe and had a successful career in the corporate world—and Veronique Munro walked away from it to be a stay-at-home mom to her dog, Snoopy. Infinity Sun, Munro’s thriving sunless tanning company, is the result of that decision. It not only allowed her to spend more time with Snoopy, whom she considered her business partner, but it also enabled her to give back in honor of her four-legged family member. Snoopy passed away in 2011, but his legacy lives on in Sprays for Strays, Munro’s nonprofit that helps dogs find their furever homes, all supported by colleagues in the sunless tanning industry. The organization has raised funds to help rescue groups across the country pay for various fees, medication, behavior modification training, and other expenses needed to get pooches into permanent homes. Over the last 10 years, the nonprofit has helped rescue thousands of dogs. But Munro knows it goes both ways. Munro shares the story of a woman who survived cancer because her rescue dog gave her a purpose and a reason to survive. “We think we are rescuing them,” Munro says. After a pause, she continues, “In a way, they are saving us. And I believe that on the deepest level.”

“It’s a reminder of all the things that are bigger than us individually and what we can do collectively to help others.” Its reach can be seen through numerous nonprofit causes spanning women’s health and safety, domestic violence and human trafficking, and emergency legal and social services—Sojourner Center, Homeward Bound, Florence Crittenton, and Check for a Lump—to name a few. Since 1995, Arizona Foundation for Women has supported the safety, health, and economic empowerment of Arizona women through research, advocacy, and philanthropy, explains Juliet Burgess, a member of the organization’s board of directors and chair of the fund development committee. “These organizations have their hands full providing critical direct services. We help so they don’t also have to do all of the outreach, fundraising, and advocacy work themselves,” says Burgess, who is also the founding partner of The Burgess Law Group. The annual Arizona Foundation for Women’s Soiree is one of the ways it does this. The foundation’s presentation of the Sandra Day O’Connor Lifetime Achievement Award is the piece de resistance of the high-profile event. Past recipients have included Madeline Albright, Soledad O’Brien, Billie Jean King, Barbara Bush, and Sally Ride. Themed “A Moonlight Masquerade,” this year’s Soiree is being held on Feb. 24 at the JW Marriott Scottsdale Camelback Inn Resort & Spa. Actress Mary-Louise Parker, this year’s award recipient, is being recognized for her work in Uganda, as well as numerous worldwide charities. Last year, the Soiree raised more than $300,000, a total expected to be surpassed this year. Burgess talks about the ripple effect of how the foundation has positively impacted countless Arizona women across all backgrounds, experiences, and situations. “It’s a reminder of all the things that are bigger than us individually and what we can do collectively to help others,” Burgess says. “That’s really inspiring to me—what a small group of people can do when they work together.”

On a family trip to Italy, Igor and Irina Ilyinsky downloaded several travel apps to enhance their experience. However, those fell short of expectations. “I downloaded all of these apps that didn’t serve our needs,” Irina recalls. Igor adds, “A lot of the apps out there leave a lot to be desired. Most are focused on heavy tourist areas, but not areas where people may be interested in.” They felt there had to be something better out there. Upon discovering there wasn’t, the couple created ListenUp, their app that offers immersive insight into cities and neighborhoods where listeners are. Igor’s 30 years of technology experience was key in creating the app, which relies on geospatial information and stories from real-life storytellers from the area. Once users download ListenUp and allow it to access location and send notifications, the information flows through earbuds or their car Bluetooth. It plays automatically wherever they are if the app has information in that area. It is free and available in 22 languages. “It’s the first audio app to tell you about where you are, wherever you are,” Irina says. “You should be able to roam the city safely and truly enjoy the experience.”

For nearly two decades, one of the most admired annual fundraising events to attend during gala season has been Childhelp’s Drive the Dream Gala. This year is no different. The 2023 event— which marks the event’s 19th annual event—features a fun country theme and will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Sat., Feb. 18, at The Phoenician, a Luxury Collection Resort, Scottsdale. “This year’s Western-themed gala, ‘Giddy Up for Kids,’ is the brainchild of co-chairs Sheila and Mike Ingram, Kim and Rod Cullum, and vice-chairs Carol and Jim Hebets,” explains Daphne Young, chief communications officer at Childhelp. “They wanted to create a fun-filled night of fundraising that played on a denim and diamonds concept. It’s a touch more relaxed in attire but with a serious ask for people to bring their generosity to the table for the children of Childhelp.” The “Queen of Country,” Reba McEntire, will accept the Childhelp Woman of the World Award for her child-serving philanthropy, while Dream Center founder Pastor Tommy Barnett will receive the Childhelp Man of the World Award for helping homeless and trafficked youth. Track Rekord, a Valleybased high-performance driving education company, will be presented with the Childhelp Nellie Jackson Award. Added to the music, there will be dinner, dancing, a live auction, and more. “It will be a night of kicking up our boots and tipping our hats to some amazing heroes who help our mission shine,” Young says. Proceeds from the gala benefit the Childhelp Children’s Center of Arizona, dedicated to Linda Pope. Since 1998, the nonprofit has served over 140,000 abused and neglected children by providing treatment, intervention, and investigation services. Young says that the center is recognized as a best practice agency, serving as a model for advocacy centers nationwide and, more recently, in Canada and Japan. “In addition to our advocacy center in Downtown Phoenix, Arizona is home to the Childhelp Headquarters and the Childhelp National Child Abuse Hotline, both located in Scottsdale,” Young says. “Arizonans are almost always in the top 10 users of our hotline, so we are proud to serve our state as we serve the nation. From a child in crisis needing immediate intervention, to a parent seeking resources, to a survivor wanting counseling in the middle of the night, our degreed professionals are available 24/7 to save lives and soothe hearts.” She adds that the need for their services is so dire that there is a waiting list for children to be served at the center. On average, the center serves 8,500 children annually.

A new service that the nonprofit offers is the Childhelp & Foundation for Global Sports Development Courage First Helpline (1.888.279.1026). “Relying on our data and expertise for 40 years of hotline excellence, we worked with these Olympic consultants to bring to life a hotline that exclusively serves youth athletes,” Young explains. “We’ve all seen the headlines of young people being abused in sports, and we are proud to pioneer a new prevention service to get in front of the problem.” Events like the Childhelp Drive the Dream Gala, which often raises millions in funding, are crucial to continuing to offer these needed services to children in need and families in crisis. “A gala like the Childhelp Drive the Dream Gala doesn’t just support today’s work, it paves the way for tomorrow’s innovation,” Young says. The Art of Bouncing Back DARLEEN “COACH DAR” SANTORE SHARES HER WINNING STRATEGIES The Valley’s Darleen “Coach Dar” Santore specializes in helping people deal with life’s curveballs and setbacks—and shares her lessons in her new book, “The Art of Bouncing Back.”
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO WRITE THIS BOOK? One thing we all know for sure is that adversity and challenges are a part of our life! But what I realized over the years as a board-certified occupational therapist and leadership advisor, and mental skills coach to CEOs, founders, and professional athletes, was that so many didn’t have the tools or knowledge or were ever taught how to not only handle adversity but bounce back from it! So, I felt it was time to share the same principles I use with them with the world.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE IT? It’s nine simple principles that help to equip you mentally and physically to not only bounce back but thrive and flow again. They ensure the obstacles and setbacks you face quickly morph into setups for your next success.
HOW WILL IT IMPACT READERS? You’ll discover how to pour a strong emotional foundation, accept feedback (the right way), connect with your “Why-Power,” and create your own bounce-back environment. Every chapter provides a blueprint that helps you learn more about yourself, so you can identify the exact pivot you need to push forward and cultivate the strength you need to handle future adversity better―and build the business, career, and life that allows you to thrive again!
