I’m writing this as I’m on an airplane headed to Europe on our biggest family trip yet. It’s early July, and I know that in a few short weeks—when this magazine hits mailboxes—summer will be over (not in temperature or in actual calendar date but in the kids-are-back-in-school way). How is it August already? I don’t know about you, but to me, the summers tend to feel like they go faster and faster. Although the routine of school for our children is often a welcome friend by the time August rolls around, it is generally a little bittersweet. In our family, we all quickly miss the lazy days of less responsibility; the evenings spent in the pool; and the extra family time that is spent hanging out at home, rather than carpooling to activities. Our August issue is dedicated to the cutest members of our community— kids and pets. They both have a way of making us feel special, and their loyalty and sense of wonder is refreshing. In this issue, read about local artist Jules Gissler, who is amazing at capturing a pet’s personality. How fabulous is her artwork, which we feature on this cover? Also, make sure to read the story on local teen Milan CoraggioSewell. She spends her free time making a huge impact in the Valley! And for when the kids are back in school, we also share places where you can relax and unwind, as well as some fun spots for happy hour. Enjoy the month!

letter from the PUBLISHER
As I write this, I am sitting and daydreaming about our annual family summer trip that is to begin next week. Every summer we take a whole month to go exploring with our boys in our RV. It has been a family tradition for the past six years! There is so much that goes into this every year—planning, packing, making sure all the bases are covered in our absence, etc. Truthfully, it’s a ton of work. Some think it’s crazy that the six of us leave for that long on the road, packed into our cozy home on wheels, but we treasure our adventures together! After all, the days are numbered while our boys are still under our roof (in fact, our oldest is now preparing to leave for college this fall), so the way we see it … carpe diem! The summer months are a great time to take advantage of time away from the everyday grind of life. It’s so important to get out and live life to the fullest and enjoy some downtime. I hope you are getting a chance to unplug a bit and get some well-deserved R&R to recharge and spend time for yourself and with those you love most. Perhaps you are escaping the summer heat or just hanging around at home. At the very least, take a little time to sit back, relax, and read this month’s issue, which is filled with easygoing and enjoyable content to allow your mind to escape a bit. Cheers! Be grateful, be kind, and live well, Tammy Fellows Owner/Publisher

CREATIVITY, WHIMSY, AND SECRETS GIVE ARTIST JULES GISSLER’S PET PORTRAITS UNIQUE PERSONALITY
Furry Flair

A RT IST ’S PA LE T T E | L IFE + CULTURE
The Montana State Fair gave artist Jules Gissler her professional start. Sort of. All things creative and artistic were always in the Billings native’s heart. But in the summer before sixth grade, she and a friend set a goal of going on every single ride at the fair. To afford their endeavor, the girls put their talents to work. They painted rocks to resemble classic Keds sneakers—down to the trademark blue label, shoe size, rubber toe, and shoestrings. The most popular styles flaunted red or green shades or a checkered pattern. Gissler describes putting the impeccably finished pieces in shoeboxes they made from index cards with tissue paper. Then they went door-to-door selling their rock sneakers. CONTINUED >

“And we were able to ride every ride at the fair that summer … well, almost every ride,” Gissler says proudly. She may not have realized it as she was taking in the bird’seye view from the ferris wheel, but Gissler’s career as a professional artist had commenced. Today, Gissler’s work spans decades across several media and subjects. Her commissioned work includes whimsical takes on abstracts, landscape, food, and people. But pet pieces that feature Gissler’s signature touches have made her work distinctive. Curlicue eyebrows and noses, a splash of sequins, and a secret line of text up the side of the canvas and over the top that bears special meaning to only the pet parent are among them. Several crisp, clear photos taken at eye level are all Gissler needs to immortalize a four-legged muse. Sometimes, clients describe their pet’s personality, which also helps Gissler incorporate that into the whimsy, whether it’s a boa, sunglasses, Hawaiian shirt, or tiara.

A RT IST ’S PA LE T T E | L IFE + CULTURE
Gissler, who has a graphic design degree from Montana State University, has a 3-year-old golden retriever, Kinley Lorraine. “I haven’t had time to paint her yet,” Gissler says with a giggle, acknowledging the irony. Gissler balances her paid commissioned work with contributions of her work and time to various rescue organizations, including the Arizona Animal Welfare League and the Shemer Art Center & Museum’s Furry Friends Fine Arts Festival. Gissler’s work naturally creates a bond with the pets she paints, even though she never meets most of her subjects in real life. After many hours spent studying photos and staring into a dog’s or cat’s eyes while bringing the image and personality to canvas, Gissler feels like she knows them. And that connection transfers to the finished piece. “The greatest compliment is when you give [the owner] the painting and they get a little choked up,” Gissler says. “I know personally what the love bond is with a furry kid for them to get emotional … there’s nothing better than that.” JulesGissler.com or Instagram: @julesAgissler

Hydration IVs AT REVITALIZE!
Hydration plays a crucial role in our overall health. It is always important to stay hydrated especially during the summer months in the valley. Many people forget to increase the amount of water and electrolytes they intake during the summer which can lead to dehydration. When we are dehydrated, our immune system doesn’t function optimally because our cells are depleted.

Checking All the Right Boxes MILAN CORAGGIO-SEWELL HELPS HER PEERS TO HEAL IN A UNIQUE WAY
ARTICLE BY MICHELLE TALSMA EVERSON
To local teen Milan Coraggio-Sewell, life is about giving back and helping her peers navigate tough experiences. During her childhood, Coraggio-Sewell lost loved ones and had to figure out how to process her emotions and heal. Because of her own experiences, she created an organization with a mission of helping other youth process their grief, and called it the Boxed Up Project. At the Boxed Up Project, Coraggio-Sewell and her team of volunteers create grief toolboxes to help kids and teens work through and express their feelings. “My favorite aspect about the Boxed Up Project is our mission: To help kids unpack their grief,” she says. “Given my own personal experiences with grief at a young age and the struggles I experienced with the coping process, I am so grateful and honored that years later I can help kids going through the same emotions I experienced.”

“I know if I had a resource like our boxes when I was younger, it would have helped me so much and I would have learned to process my feelings in a much healthier way.”
— MIL AN COR AGGIO -SEWELL
Each box created by the organization contains carefully selected items—a photo album, stuffed animal, books, a journal, art supplies, and more—alongside a kid-friendly instructional guide to help the recipient focus on positive feelings and unpack their grief. The boxes are put together with help and advice from accredited grief experts, are unisex, and are separated by age groups (ages 5-11 and 12-17). Each box contains resources for parents and caregivers as well, and are donated to organizations that work with families experiencing loss. Since being founded last year, Coraggio-Sewell and her supporters—many of whom are fellow teens—have donated more than 500 boxes. “What also makes our grief toolboxes stand out is the fact that the boxes for kids going through grief are created by kids who have experienced grief of their own,” Coraggio-Sewell says. “I think the youthto-youth connection is so important. When kids know this is a gift from another kid who empathizes with their situation and wants to give them comfort, we feel that makes a positive impact.”

Boxed Up Project has donated boxes to multiple organizations, including New Song Center for Grieving Families, Stepping Stones of Hope, Billy’s Place, Ryan House, Amanda Hope Foundation, and more. Looking toward the future, Coraggio-Sewell and her team are working on making sure the boxes reach even more children and teens in need. “We are currently working on video guides that live in a QR code in each box,” she explains. “The video guides will contain instructional clips from different grief counselors and experts explaining how to use the items in each box. Our hope with these videos is to help families work through their boxes together at home. We also are working on translating our boxes to Spanish. “I know if I had a resource like our boxes when I was younger, it would have helped me so much and I would have learned to process my feelings in a much healthier way,” Coraggio-Sewell adds. “We are all truly grateful to have been given the opportunity to make a positive impact on a child’s life.” BoxedUpProject.org

relax and unwind For those with young children, summer is unofficially over. Fall may not quite be here yet, but school is back in session. For others, August still seems like mid-summer. Wherever you fall on that list, August is the perfect time to take a breath and de-stress. Here, five ways to relax.
Good news—art is scientifically proven to relieve stress and enhance cognitive abilities. So, head to Brightside Studios on Camelback Road and get ready to create. Brightside offers a full studio, with easels and art supplies, where artists can get messy; a café where you can sit and recharge; and classes like Paint & Sip where you can grab a cocktail from the café, sit, and paint. A music lounge offers weekly live concerts, and the art supply store includes everything that a creative could ever need. BrightsideStudios.com

Did you know that in the heart of Downtown Phoenix there is a destination called The Japanese Friendship Garden of Phoenix? Named RoHoEn, it is a joint project by the City of Phoenix and its sister city, Himeji, Japan. Completed in 1996, the 3.5acre locale is an authentic Japanese Stroll Garden and features a tea garden, tea house, stone garden, and a courtyard garden. Spend time exploring the curved paths, hidden views, and water features, and let the peacefulness melt away any stress. Once a month, October through September, the tea house also offers a public tea (reservations are required). JapaneseFriendshipGarden.org CONTINUED >

Let your mind and body completely go for the ultimate in relaxation at True REST, a zero-gravity environment. Here you’ll climb into a special pod filled with a water/salt solution for flotation therapy, also known as sensory deprivation. Using 1,000 lbs. of Epsom salts, the buoyancy of the water will make you feel like you’re floating on air. The experience can help prevent inflammation in your joints and muscles, treat sore muscles, decrease cortisol (a stress hormone), and much more. You can choose to float in the dark and in silence, or use the multicolored lights and relaxing music. TrueREST.com
Raise a Glass At the new The Wine Collective of Scottsdale— the tasting room, wine bar, and retail store opened in April in Downtown Scottsdale—enjoy a taste of Arizona. The locale is the only destination in the area to showcase almost exclusively a variety of premium Arizona producers under one roof (the only selections not from Arizona are the acclaimed sparkling wines from Gruet in New Mexico). Owner Zoya Vora-Shah hand-selects each of the roughly 40 bottles on the shelves and prides herself on offering an experience that’s educational, as well as relaxing and fun. Plus, through August, you can purchase a bottle to drink on-site for the normal retail price, without the corkage fee. Cheers to that. The-Wine-Collective.com

A UNIQUE LOCALE: THE HALL OF FLAME MUSEUM EXPLORE ONE OF THE LARGEST COLLECTIONS OF HISTORICAL FIRE TRUCKS AND FIREFIGHTING EQUIPMENT
ARTICLE BY ANGEL FUCHS

M UST SE E | AU TO + M AR INE
Not many people know that Arizona is home to one of the largest collections of historical fire trucks and vintage firefighting equipment—and it’s all housed at the Hall of Flame Museum. The museum was originally founded in 1961 in Wisconsin by George F. Getz, Jr., a Chicago-area industrialist. Getz began collecting fire apparatus after his wife gifted him a 1924 American LaFrance fire engine. The Getz's were fascinated by the rig and began collecting more equipment of all types from all over the world. In 1974 the family opened the Hall of Flame Museum in its present location in Papago Park, adjacent to the Phoenix Zoo. The museum has since grown to include several galleries and thousands of pieces, including 90 wheeled pieces. “We have everything from helmets to axes to engines. We even have a piece donated by Gene Autry,” says Mark Moorhead, curator of education. “He found it on his property and donated it to us.” The collection is all privately owned by the Getz family. The galleries include the Hall of Heroes, which honors firefighters who died in the line of duty or were heavily decorated in the field; a 9/11 memorial dedicated to the firefighters and first responders of that fateful day; and a memorial for the Granite Mountain Hotshots, the 19 fire fighters who perished while fighting the Yarnell Hill Fire in 2013.
The oldest large piece in the Hall of Flame Museum is a 1725 hand pumper from England that had the capability to pump 60 gallons of water at a time—a pretty spectacular feat for the time. “My favorite piece is an 1844 hand pumper that was built in Philadelphia,” says Moorhead. “It's been restored and is now covered in murals. I just love the 19th-century design of it.” “The museum is a great place to bring kids, but adults will love it too,” Moorhead says. “We are a serious historical museum, but at the same time a fun place to learn and enjoy a visit.” Representatives of the museum regularly bring artifacts out to the community for educational purposes, and trucks are brought to every Fiesta Bowl Parade. “Fire is a good servant but a bad master, and people are fascinated with it. It's really moving to think of the bravery and sacrifice of firefighters. It's all here,” says Moorhead. “We once had a visitor say there are two must-see places when visiting Arizona—the Grand Canyon and the Hall of Flame Museum.” The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday, from 10 a.m.-6 p.m., and is closed on all major holidays. Guided tours are available for pre-booked groups of 10 or more (call ahead for details). The facility is also available to rent for events. HallOfFlame.org

ROC TITLE CHANGES THE GAME WHEN IT COMES TO TITLE AND ESCROW SERVICES
44
EXP E RT H E LP | HOM E SE RVI CE S
Let’s ROC!
When you think of title and escrow services, you may not exactly think of words like “modern” or “fun.” But that’s exactly why ROC Title Agency was started—to package service, culture, and results in a way that changes the real estate industry for the better. ROC Title Agency is a local title and escrow company that offers tailored professional real estate services to a variety of clients. “We are a newer company and we’re focused on a client-centric model that honors a more modern approach to real estate while emphasizing the importance of diversity and culture,” says President Tara Johnson. “We believe service is attached to the experience and that’s how we want to present ourselves—as a fresh lifestyle brand that brings change and a new perspective to a line of work that is constantly framed by bureaucracy and stale propositions.” As part of their impressive growth, ROC Title Agency and their team of ROCstars just opened a new headquarters location in Paradise Valley. Johnson says they chose the new locale for its beautiful scenery and central location. “We strive to make our office a lot hipper and fun—the best compliment I receive is when our team members say that they’re excited to come to work,” she says. “I believe in taking care of our
team because then they take care of our clients.” Johnson adds that purchasing a home is often one of the biggest purchases of someone’s life and that their staff is trained on how to make it as positive and approachable as possible. “You never know why someone is purchasing or selling real estate; it could be a joyous occasion like their first home or something life-changing like divorce or death,” she says. “So, our staff is respectful and always kind in any situation—it’s not only about our real estate expertise but about empathy and that human touch, as well.” In addition to their expertise and mindful approach to customer service, ROC Title Agency also provides multiple helpful resources to real estate agents, and home buyers and sellers. They are a fully paperless operation and streamline all their services digitally, as well. Because of their success, they are continuing to grow statewide, with new locations opening soon in Chandler, Surprise, and Flagstaff. “We want working with us to be a good experience for everyone,” Johnson adds. “From our employees who are a part of our innovative culture to our clients who benefit from our service and emphasis on technology, we are changing up how things are done in the best way possible.” ROCTitle.com/arizona
