LIFESTYLE LETTER

To Amazing Women...

May 2022 PUBLISHER

Tammy Fellows | tammy.fellows@citylifestyle.com EDITOR

I literally stressed about writing this letter for days. Thoughts kept tumbling around my head, and I couldn’t figure out what I wanted to write about. I mean, this is the Women’s Issue. It’s about so many of the powerful, amazing women in our community, and fun things that impact women. I knew I wanted to talk about the women who have impacted my life—but where would I start? There are so many. My mom, my sister, my daughter, my best friends, my cousins… the thing is, the list is long. Then I realized… how wonderful is that? How wonderful is it to be surrounded by so many amazing women that there’s not enough space on this page to speak about them all? So, to you all—I love you and thank you for being in my life! To those I haven’t met yet—I look forward to getting to know you and welcoming you to my tribe. Let’s connect! This issue is all about women. Meet Jenny Mollen, who is featured on our cover. The author, actress, and influencer is one of those women who you instantly feel like you’re best friends with—funny, real, and smart. Read all about her in this issue. We also showcase several women who are making a difference in business and the community. They are impressive! And, we talk about some of our favorite spas. Ahh, relaxation… Of course, what’s a women’s issue without one of my personal favorite meals—dessert? Yum! One of the best things you can do with those you appreciate in your life is to spend time with them. So, order one of the desserts in this issue and raise a fork to the amazing women in your life! Cheers! Yours,

letter from the

PUBLISHER I dedicate this to my mom… May is a special time of year. Not only do we celebrate Mother’s Day, but there’s also May Day on May 1. This is a special day between my mom and me. Ever since I can remember, on the first day of May, I have brought her flowers. I try to surprise her by leaving them quietly on her doorstep. I honestly don’t think I have missed a single year of this tradition since I was about 7 years old. I love doing this because it’s my way of reminding her of the beauty she brings to my life, our family, and frankly, this world. This woman is my rock, always there for me, my constant cheerleader, and the foundation of my family growing up. I am the youngest of five kids, and because of her, we have a very tight bond between us. She was always and continues to be the glue for our family. Now having four children of my own, I understand just how important this is. Connection truly is the basis of love, respect, trust, and honestly, how we grow into relationships throughout our lives. Not only is my mom the center of our family unit, she is also the BEST grandmother (Grammie) to all of our kids, and they love and cherish her. Mothers have so much influence on who we become in life. I am so grateful for the one I’ve got—without her constant love, encouragement, and support, our lives would be very different. I hope all of you can take extra time to reflect, and if possible reach out to your mothers if you are lucky enough to still have them around. They are a blessing and should be celebrated! Dear Mom, I want to take this opportunity to thank you and recognize the amazing woman you are. Throughout my life you have always been there for me and our entire family, encouraging us to be strong, and independent, but most importantly, to follow our dreams. You taught us that we hold the key to our happiness by staying true to who we are, by chasing our dreams, but mostly by loving and respecting those around us. As the matriarch of our family, the bonds you helped us create have made our relationships—both old and new—strong and meaningful! Thank you for all you have done for all of us and our families! You are so deeply loved because you give so much of your love to all of us. We could all take a page out of your book... I am grateful for you! Tammy

‘COMEDY IS MY COPING MECHANISM’ ARTICLE BY MICHELLE GLICKSMAN

Author, Actress, and Influencer Jenny Mollen on her Career and Growing up in the Valley

Jenny Mollen lives a busy life. You may recognize her from her roles on television or in films; as The New York Times bestselling author of the essay collections I Like You Just the Way I Am and Live Fast Die Hot; as a previous columnist for publications such as Parents; a writer; and an Instagram influencer (her Instagram @jennymollen has 418K followers). Oh, and Mollen—who has two sons with her husband, actor Jason Biggs—is also known for the creative lunches she packs for her kids, which she documents on Instagram at @dictatorlunches. As we speak over Zoom, she’s settled onto her sofa in her New York City home where she now lives, though she grew up here in the Valley. She visits often—her dad, well-known personality Dr. Art Mollen, still lives here, as does her brother—and as we speak, the Chaparral High School graduate reminisces about her childhood. “My dad’s old building was on 16th Street, so I grew up in that area. Ajo Al’s was like an every Monday night experience,” she says. And, her first job was here in town, too. “I worked at this place called Mountainview Yogurt. It was on Mountainview, near Eddie Chan’s. Then I worked at NYPD Pizza.” Her childhood influenced her current career in other ways, too. “Duck and Decanter is one of my favorite places, ever. I have a cookbook that comes out in September, and I have a Duck and Decanter tuna salad in the book because I’m that obsessed with Duck and Decanter. It’s like the best tuna I ever had in my life,” she shares. The cookbook will be the fourth book Mollen has written. Her witty, say-anything tone made her first two books—the collections of essays—wildly popular.

Sony TV optioned her comedic memoir I Like You Just The Way I Am and Warner Bros. acquired the rights to Live Fast Die Hot, and Anne Hathaway is attached to star in a film on Mollen’s experiences. Her latest book, City of Likes, is currently available for pre-order and will be in stores next month (she will also be in town doing a book signing for it at Changing Hands Bookstore in Phoenix on June 23). The novel is a satire of the seductive allure of social media centered around Megan Chernoff, who just had a second baby and moved with her family to New York, and her new friendship with a popular “momfluencer” named Daphne Cole. After she becomes an influencer in her own right, her relationships are tested and she has to find her way back to her real life. “My first two books were based on my life,” Mollen shares. “Comedy is my coping mechanism. My first book is kind of my manifesto for crazy women everywhere. “With the third book, I think everyone expected that I was going to write a mom memoir because I had kind of become this voice in this ‘mommy world’—accidentally, I kind of fell into it with Instagram—but I sat down to write that [book] proposal and I was bored out of my mind. I had a standing column with Parents magazine at the time, and I was writing a lot about being a parent, and I didn’t love that the older my kids got, the more real they became. I didn’t want to exploit them for comedy. When they were younger, they were just props in the story. But when they became true, real characters, I felt like I was crossing a line and I wanted to be conscious about that. I was also struggling with the idea that if you’re so busy trying to curate your life online and demonstrating to all of these strangers what a good parent you are, how present are you for your kid in your real life, and are you even really there as a mom? “I kept coming back to that question, and that’s when I set out to write the novel.” Mollen explains that the book is based on her own life in two ways. “I felt like I was getting to a point with Instagram where I was making a lot of money off of it, but to make that money, I had to feed this insatiable beast. I wanted to explore the psychology of it… how does that happen, why does it happen, and how do you get out? How do you stay healthy?” She also wanted to write about female friendships. While writing is now Mollen’s main career, she initially began pursuing a career as an actress. She acted in shows at Chaparral High School, and then attended UCLA as a theater major. It was while she was at UCLA that she wrote a onewoman show, which led to her first agent. Still, she says she “didn’t have confidence” in her writing, and continued to pursue acting, landing jobs “here and there.” “It wasn’t the warm welcome I anticipated,” she says. I continued to work inconsistently and bob around, and then when Twitter started, that’s when my life went into a different direction. You didn’t have to be a comedy writer to write jokes. I quickly found myself rising the ranks on Twitter, and before I realized it, I kinda had a following.” Since she had a bit of a platform (she’s been called one of the funniest women on Twitter and Instagram by the Huffington Post), Mollen decided to write a short story. Not only was it published, but it crashed the servers on the site where it was published. She continued to write for that site for a while before writing her first book, and has also contributed to places such as Glamour, Cosmopolitan, Elle.com, and more. While her acting credits include roles in shows and films such as Angel and Crazy, Stupid, Love, she says that she now prefers to concentrate on writing (though she does have a project currently in development). “I never want to be sitting in a trailer facilitating someone else’s words again,” she says about acting. “From [the moment my book was a bestseller] I realized I’m never going back. I had total control. I could be the master of my own universe.” And of course, she could spend time with her husband and sons. “Before my kids I just was never fully vulnerable like I am now. I never let anybody in in that way. Now I feel like I’m an open, bleeding mess! They’ve taught me so much about how much love I have to give. I never knew love like this. But that’s two-sided, right? That’s the best thing and the worst thing about being a mom.” She pauses for a moment, then laughs. “I’m just trying to understand motherhood and adulthood and survive it like the rest of us!”

PAO L A E M B RY Chilean-born Paola Embry—an accomplished sommelier who earned the certificat de mérite from Le Comité National des Vins de France and a degree of honor from Les Amis du Vin International Wine Society—believes in honoring the past, embracing the present, and inspiring the future as it relates to the culinary community in her role as CEO and Wine Director of Wrigley Mansion. “It has been a time of great transformation for this living piece of history,” says Embry. “The former Wrigley family home recently completed a cutting-edge renovation and ushered in a new era of epicurean adventure, while innovating ways to showcase the property’s legacy through events, tea, and tours.” Embry, fresh off the second Wrigley Mansion Wine Festival and the one-year anniversary of the James Beard-nominated Christopher’s at Wrigley Mansion, is not resting on her laurels. For more than 30 years, accomplished photographer and entrepreneur Karen Shell’s life has been all about focus. “I built my business—Shell Photographics— by being narrowly focused on my clients’ wants and needs and then delivering exceptional results, quite literally in focus,” says Shell. “I have also been focused on helping at-risk children in the community.” After a life-long pursuit to serve children and families in need via multiple hands-on avenues, Shell founded the nonprofit Kids in Focus in 2012 to teach youth to see themselves and the world with a new perspective. “Through our programs, we equip children who have experienced trauma such as poverty, homelessness, neglect, or abuse with life skills and mentorship to help them make the shift from surviving to thriving,” says Shell, herself a survivor of abuse as a child. Throughout her life, Juliet Burgess was surrounded by courageous and kind women—and this is a big reason the Paradise Valley labor and employment attorney and founder of the award-winning Burgess Law Group focuses much of her non-legal hours with organizations that not only give back to the community, but also support women. Recipients of Burgess’ selfless service include nonprofits such as the Arizona Women Lawyers Association and the Arizona Foundation for Women, for which she serves on the board of directors—she co-chaired the organization’s 25th Anniversary Silver Soiree, which raised over $330,000 for the women in Arizona—and she is a champion for the She Leads mentorship program. Burgess is also a Girl Scouts co-leader for her older daughter’s third grade Brownies Troop, and is excited about her recent membership with the Arizona Costume Institute at the Phoenix Art Museum. “I care a lot about the safety, health, and economic independence of the women in our community,” Burgess, a New York native, says of her passion for philanthropy. “I’ve been fortunate to always be on a team with strong, inspiring women, and I’m a big believer in synergy— what you put out comes back to you.” The daughter of special education teachers and a former competitive rhythmic gymnast, Burgess launched the boutique firm that bears her name in 2016. Four years later, her husband Todd, also an attorney, left his large firm and joined her practice, where he manages the firm’s commercial bankruptcy,

creditors rights, loan enforcement, and financial restructuring work. Together, they have three children, Benjamin, 12; Elle, 9; and Ivy, 1. Right after having Elle, Burgess chose to walk away from her partner track at a prominent international firm for what she calls the hardest but most rewarding job in the world: stay-at-home mom. Through a book drive at her son’s preschool, she became involved with community efforts, including serving on the board of directors (chair of Community Outreach) for the Friends of the Phoenix Public Library, and co-chairing the Jewish National Fund’s annual Women for Israel luncheon for two consecutive years. In 2017, when a local restaurant chain asked for her expertise so it could adhere to Arizona’s new paid sick time law, Burgess found herself back in the game. “You can take the girl out of the law firm, but you can’t take the lawyer out of the girl,” Burgess says with a smile. This led to more projects, and soon, to the full-fledged practice Burgess Law Group is today. Burgess talks about a new generation of women learning to be brave and embrace a path that doesn’t align with what’s considered traditional or perfect. Through her own career decision, she shows young women that they too can follow their hearts and have a career and a family on their own terms. “This idea that women are stronger together is something I’m really passionate about,” she says. Doing Wine Country With

Gal Pals A Guide to Experiencing Sonoma in Three Days

44

T R AV E L J OU R N A L | TR AVE L

The best wines are the ones we drink with friends, but it doesn’t hurt to sip vino in the birthplace of California’s modern wine industry. Described as Napa’s rustic, less refined and more relaxed sister, Sonoma is renowned for legendary vineyards, picturesque scenery, and being a hot spot for gal pals to relax, refresh and enjoy the company of good friends... and good wines. If you’re craving a girls-only getaway with your besties, Sonoma is the stunning sweet spot that will stimulate your senses while indulging in a well-deserved escape from the norm. Here’s how to do Sonoma in three days. Where to Stay A block from Sonoma’s quaint town square sits the lovely Cottage Inn & Spa. Peaceful in setting and with only nine suites, this charming property is perfect to reserve for your party. Many of the suites are equipped with fireplaces, Jacuzzi tubs, kitchens, and private patios. All stays include access to several common areas, and fresh pastries delivered to your room every morning. Massages, body wraps, and reflexology are available at the property’s spa, as well. Day One After a leisurely arrival at the Cottage Inn & Spa, throw on some boots and get your girls to channel their inner cowgirl. Reserve an afternoon ride with Sonoma Valley Trail Rides. The company’s Bartholomew Estate Experience Ride leads your group through the vineyards via horseback, taking in the scenery atop four-legged gentle giants. Dubbed one of the most unique ways to experience the incredible Sonoma Valley, end your ride with an on-site tasting at Bartholomew. Do dinner at Wit & Wisdom. The adorable wine country tavern offers American comfort food with a top-notch flare paired with a robust wine list. The restaurant features regional California cuisine cooked in a hearth oven, and there’s also a bocce ball court, making for a fun happy hour with the girls.

“Built in 1842 and restored as a historical Sonoma landmark, the Adobe exhibits rich heritage and wildly contemporary interior design.”

Day Two Set your alarm for 5 a.m. A bucket list adventure awaits. Grab the girls for an unforgettable morning of ballooning; a Sonoma hot air balloon ride is one of Sonoma Wine Country’s most premier outdoor activities. Courtesy of Sonoma Ballooning, feel a sense of freedom like no other, undoubtedly captivated by the magic and wonder of one of the best balloon rides in the United States. Your sunrise excursion begins the moment you gather at the Sonoma Skypark for a pilot briefing, then witness the set-up and balloon inflation process. Finally, embark on your 45-minute flight, seeing panoramic views of Sonoma Valley, historic Downtown Sonoma, the rolling hills of Petaluma, the famed Carneros wine-making region, and outlying views of the San Francisco Bay. Your post-flight celebration includes a champagne toast. After the eventful morning, snag a taste of Tuscany in the heart of Northern California. Schedule a noon reservation at Viansa for a Private Outlook Tasting, perched along the

46

beautiful hillside vineyard. In one of their custom, intimate Outlooks, your group will enjoy a flight of wines, a charcuterie board, and standout views of the entire Sonoma Valley. For your afternoon “happy hour,” head to Sebastiani—a Sonoma tradition for over 100 years. Take your pick between a wine tasting or a BYO picnic. As an alternative to the tasting, Sebastiani gives you the option to reserve a picnic table for up to six guests, where you can bring your own food and buy bottles from the tasting room. Day Three After a leisurely morning exploring Sonoma’s town square, spend the day winery hopping. To kick things off, reserve a 10 a.m. Collector’s Tour at Hamel Family Wines. The Hamel Family Wines Collectors’ Experience is the quintessential exploration into the winery’s series of allocated Cabernet Sauvignon blends. Upon arrival, you’ll be greeted with a nice glass during a focused tour of Hamel’s winegrowing

and winemaking practices. (You’ll also get a private tasting in the Cave’s Reserve Room!) Once seated, taste-test a handful of their best vinos, accompanied by seasonal culinary plates. At 1 p.m., head to Three Sticks Wines for a food and wine pairing. (You surely won’t go hungry during your trip!) This premier Three Sticks tasting includes five glasses and small bites crafted in partnership with El Dorado Kitchen. Your Three Sticks experience is particularly special as it takes place in the Vallejo-Casteñada Adobe. Built in 1842 and restored as a historical Sonoma landmark, the Adobe exhibits rich heritage and wildly contemporary interior design. Finally, complete your wine-infused final day with a 3:30 p.m. tasting at Jacuzzi Winery. Immerse yourselves in the flavors and feel of Italy. Experience rare Californiagrown, Tuscan-inspired varietals and awardwinning extra virgin olive oils. That’s right... wine and olive oil join forces for this delectable tasting experience.
