Welcome to April! Recently, I had the opportunity to chat with actress Kate Walsh. I’ve actually interviewed her before, so it was wonderful to be able to speak with her again. One thing I can tell you—she’s truly just a nice, friendly, funny person. This time, I had the opportunity to speak with her about her acting roles (hello, Grey’s Anatomy and Emily in Paris!); her company, Boyfriend; and growing up in Arizona. (Sneak tidbit—she loves Arizona so much that she created a cactus garden at her current location in Australia!) Also in this issue, we celebrate the restaurant scene’s diverse chefs and flavors in our story Taste the World. So many amazing cuisines and flavors from these wonderful chefs! And, we touch on fabulous interior design, unique family getaways, and much more. I hope you enjoy this issue and have a wonderful month! Yours,

PUBLISHER We are in a unique time… I’m not sure about you, but I believe that the stars align in specific ways that can certainly have an effect on things. For me, it’s a shift in connection and awareness. I recently found my word for the year. The word I embrace and practice daily is “discover.” The best part about it is I am truly learning and discovering so much! As I write this, I have a clear mindset on what is possible. This mindset stems from my daily meditation practice. The best thing about it is that it lends itself to opportunity and genuine openness to the people and things in the world around me that matter most. It’s as if a shift has happened and people, myself included, are waking up to their surroundings and connecting with those who resonate with this. Without trying to sound overly “kumbaya,” there really seems to be an energy shift towards people connecting, and it is refreshing. I encourage you to find solace in this time and seek out true connections to the community, the people, and the things that bring you joy. Be sure to stop and smell the roses! With that, we hope you enjoy this month’s issue as it is all about discovery—the theme is “Explore.” We share places to explore and get away to, as well as dig into food inspired by other cultures from around the world. And, our cover story is on actress Kate Walsh. We hope you enjoy. Happy reading! Be grateful, be kind, and live well! Tammy Fellows, Owner/Publisher

BUFFALO BOUTIQUE OPENS ITS DOORS

O UR TOWN | HOM E + D ESI GN
AN INSPIRED COLLECTION Just after celebrating a decade in their stunning showroom, Buffalo Collection’s owners—Michael and Laura Levenberg— continue to innovate and offer locals even more stunning custom furniture pieces, art, accessories, and more with the opening of their new boutique, Buffalo Boutique. Buffalo Collection, the art and furniture gallery located on the corner of 5th Avenue and Goldwater in Old Town Scottsdale, features a carefully curated assortment of furniture and art that celebrates the spirit of the American West. Originally launched in Colorado, the gallery beautifully blends the Old West with the modern world. It’s an art gallery meets furniture showroom, with their custom heirloom furniture serving as pieces of art in their own right—built to order, featuring the ability to customize everything from color to firmness of the cushions, and all made by U.S. artisans out of American buffalo leather. To offer even more to their always-growing fanbase, the couple opened Buffalo Boutique just a few doors down from Buffalo Collection, at 7032 E. 5th Ave. “Buffalo Boutique serves as a secondary space for smaller items such as handbags, luggage, fine jewelry, luxury clothing,
accessories, home décor, gifts, and more that is still quality and buffalo-centric, but for items that might get looked over in the bigger showroom,” Laura explains. Michael adds that they work with talented independent U.S. artisans and showcase their work in the welcoming environment that is Buffalo Boutique. “We view the space as a gallery with our one-of-a-kind pieces that you won’t find anywhere else,” he says. “We’re not there to sell, per say—it’s about finding the pieces new homes and educating visitors on buffalo leather and the different artists we feature.” For those who visit Buffalo Collection, an added stop at Buffalo Boutique may provide additional paintings and other pieces to add to their own personal collections. “We’re there for our customers and visitors, and it’s never the same visit twice as items rotate and are added,” Laura says. “At both Buffalo Collection and our new Buffalo Boutique, we offer custom everything so that you can find the perfect piece for your own space.” BuffaloBoutique.com; BuffaloCollection.com

It was after the plans were completed for this new 5,458square-foot home in a sought-after neighborhood in Paradise Valley—dubbed Razor’s Edge—that the homeowners brought in Holly Wright, owner and principal designer of Holly Wright Design, to assist with all the interior finishes, designs, lighting, and furnishings. “This was the client’s first modern home, so I was sure to educate them on why I would suggest finishes or details that would support the architecture of the home. [The homeowner] also had a feminine aesthetic, and I wanted to add that elegance in subtle details throughout the home,” Wright says. Wright describes the interior design of the house—which has four bedrooms, an upper game loft, and nearly 360-degree views through its windows and adjacent patios—as “warm modern, with a touch of elegance.” As for details that stand out to her, it’s “the layering of stone textures on the main fireplace, and also the kitchen metal and glass finishings.” HollyWrightDesign.com

THE ACTRESS AND ENTREPRENEUR ON GROWING UP IN ARIZONA, HER ‘BOYFRIEND IN A BOTTLE,’ ACTING, AND CAUSES SHE’S PASSIONATE ABOUT
Kate Walsh ARTICLE BY MICHELLE GLICKSMAN Actress and entrepreneur Kate Walsh—known for her roles on such shows as Private Practice, Grey’s Anatomy, 13 Reasons Why, and Emily in Paris—has been busy. We’re speaking via telephone during a recent Tuesday evening for me, and Wednesday morning for her, as she was in Australia at the time. “I’m coming at you from the future!” she jokes.
28
I NSP IR E D BY | EN TERTA I NME NT
I thank her for the interview and for speaking with me again—I’ve interviewed her before— and she replies that not only is she happy to do so, but she’s also so excited because “I miss Tucson and I miss Arizona.” Walsh moved to Tucson when she was 11 and grew up there, later attending the University of Arizona. “I’ve loved it,” she shares. “I had the best time growing up there. That’s where my best girlfriends still are, and I love going back. … “There’s nothing like the desert in bloom. And ocotillos and Saguaros—I love it. I love hiking, too.” In fact, when she was back this past summer to visit her friends—she comes back at least once a year—she spent time hiking in Saguaro National Park. During the visit, she also spent time at the Grand Canyon and in Sedona. “Arizona to me is just one of the most beautiful states,” she says. Walsh also loves Sonoran Mexican food and the iconic Arizona Inn (which is where she stays in Tucson when she visits if she’s not staying with one of her friends). “I also worked there in college,” she shares. Her Arizona roots and the beauty of the landscape influenced her so much that she created a cactus garden, complete with rocks, at her home in Australia.
CURRENT ROLES, AND REPRISING HER GREY’S CHARACTER While she was in the United States this past summer, Walsh spent time in Los Angeles filming several episodes of Grey’s Anatomy, which was the much-anticipated reprise of her popular character Dr. Addison Montgomery on the show. “It was really overwhelming and beautiful and very emotional,” she says of going back to the show, for the role she had played on it from 20052012. “Imagine going back to a job you were at [many] years ago, but some of the same people are still there. It’s like going home for the holidays but if you haven’t been home for [many] years. … It was like a warm, tearful embrace.” CONTINUED >

29
She has also been busy filming other roles. Walsh flew to Europe to shoot the second season of Emily in Paris, which dropped on Dec. 22, 2021. Then, back in the U.S., she also filmed a new show called Sprung. “It’s a Covid comedy,” she explains. “I play a congresswoman who may have bought stock in a certain vaccine and then dumped it. It was a really fun show to do.” That show—for which an air date has yet to be announced—also stars Martha Plimpton and Garrett Dillahunt. Now Walsh is back in Australia, and recently performed in a stage production of Mary Stewart.
THE SCENT OF SUCCESS It was around the time she moved to Arizona when Walsh’s grandmother gave her a bottle of violet perfume. “I’ve always loved fragrance,” she says. “I remember, when I was young, my mom had this one friend and we’d go to her house. They’d have coffee and I’d explore. She had this great boudoir vanity with all these perfumes and bottles. I remember being just obsessed with it. It was like a fantasyland. That and a good playhouse—and where’s the jewelry box—and I’m done! So, I always loved it. “Then when I was in high school in Tucson, I got Jessica McClintock [perfume], then later I got my first Chanel.” Fast-forward to 2008. She was on Private Practice then, playing Dr. Addison Montgomery (the character who would later cross over to Grey’s), and she had just broken up with her real-life boyfriend. “I missed his cologne,” she says. She was out shopping and so went over to the men’s fragrance counter. “I don’t have to have a boyfriend to have that boyfriend smell,” she remembers thinking. The idea of a “boyfriend in a bottle” stuck with her, and so in 2009 she founded Boyfriend, launching on the Home Shopping Network in 2010. “I wanted to do just a digital brand,” she says. “I wanted to do it without traditional public relations or buying ads in magazines—just doing web commercials and just doing it online.”
30
I NSP IR E D BY | EN TERTA I NME NT
At the time, the idea was unique. Twitter was just getting going and Instagram wasn’t around yet. The digital landscape was entirely different. Today, Boyfriend—which is neither a masculine nor feminine scent—is an award-winning fragrance. “With top notes of night-blooming jasmine and juicy plum, Boyfriend opens up into layers of warm vanilla, tears of benzoin, a hint of patchouli and finally heats up on your skin with a touch of musk [synthetic] and golden amber,” it is described as on BoyfriendPerfume.com. Boyfriend is a lifestyle brand, and it launched with a body oil, hand and body cream, candle, eau de parfum, and a solid fragrance. Walsh always wanted the brand to be a way to connect with her fans, and so she created a group called Boyfriend Confidential on Facebook. There, she and her team ask for members’ opinions on products, and ideas for product development. “We really do use that,” Walsh says. “So, it’s sort of an interactive brand in that way, and it makes me feel really connected to our clients. It’s for them. It’s very analogous to TV and film, because you’re doing this for the audience. Ultimately, the audience has to like [your products].” Walsh says there are several new fragrances that they are currently testing, which were developed with input from several people from the group. The group was also where the suggestion to create an air freshener came from. “I wouldn’t have thought of that,” Walsh says. “But I loved the idea and we made it!” In addition to the Boyfriend website, the company’s products are now also available on Amazon—meaning they can be purchased internationally, which was one of Walsh’s goals.
COMMITTED TO CAUSES As if acting and running a company weren’t enough, Walsh is also very active in supporting various causes. For many years she has been involved with Operation Smile, which treats those with cleft lips and cleft palates, as well as Oceana, which is an international conservation organization that addresses such things as legislation for reef protection, seafood fraud, protecting oceans from deepwater drilling, and more. She is also involved with Planned Parenthood, especially Planned Parenthood of Arizona. “It was seminal in my growing up,” she shares. “It’s where I went when I didn’t have health insurance in Arizona, and when I was a struggling actress in Chicago or New York. I always went to Planned Parenthood, not just for birth control, but for health services, my annual exam—everything. They really expanded what they do and their services over the years, and it’s really an incredible organization, particularly the Arizona chapter. I’m very passionate about working with them. “I’ve really, even recently, been focusing more on women’s issues and helping women,” she says. Recently, she’s been hosting a weekly or bi-weekly event on her Instagram page, shining a light on women-founded industries and young entrepreneurs. “Women’s health and education are critical and something I think we’ll always have to fight for. “In the meantime, I’m also trying to slow down,” she says, laughing. “I sort of just pretend that I can do that. Sometimes I pretend I’m moving in slow motion just to have the sense of slowing down!”

Glenwood Springs
Introducing Glenwood Springs... “The greatest legacy we can leave our children is happy memories.” Happy memories await in Glenwood Springs, Colorado, a 10-hour road trip from the Valley. Known for its hot springs, the Rocky Mountain resort city is rich with wildlife and sheer beauty. Offering an array of family-friendly activities, the area is home to the esteemed Glenwood Springs Adventure Park, a must-do with amusement rides and subterranean caverns—a magical geological excursion. Surely, you’ll want to take a dip in the world’s largest mineral hot springs pool. Invigorating and rejuvenating for adults and super fun for kids, there’s a vast splash zone, water slide, diving board, and lap lanes. Glenwood Springs is primed with pristine river spots; the white water is mild and ideal for guided
rafting adventures. You can also rent duckies (inflatable kayaks) or paddleboards. If you’re going to check one hike off your list, opt for the Doc Holliday memorial, and for older kids, explore mountain biking paths for every skill on the paved Rio Grande Trail. In addition, Bair Ranch, located in Glenwood Canyon, offers several activities like horseback riding, ATV & Jeep tours, and sport clay shooting. Family accommodations include Hotel Glenwood Springs, located at the Glenwood Gondola base, which goes to Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park. The property also flaunts a small indoor water facility. Introducing Snow Mountain Ranch... “Never underestimate the importance of having fun.” Consider Snow Mountain Ranch a fun hub for families—a camp-like atmosphere for those seeking a genuine back-to-the-basics escape. Located in Grand Country Colorado, the YMCA of the Rockies destination is what vacation is meant to be... packed with frivolous play. Awake to breathtaking mountain views and the sound of songbirds, and after an action-packed day, witness a dreamy sunset from your personal porch. Accommodations vary; choose between private cabins, spacious lodge rooms, scenic campgrounds, or yurts. Cabins can sleep up to 12, and are equipped with full kitchens, a fireplace, and a deck. You’ll likely spot some deer outside your front door. Included in all stays: roller skating, swimming, mini-golf, sports, hiking/biking trails, nature walks, and more. But what makes Snow Mountain extra special are the entertaining “extras.” To make the most out of your stay, partake in archery, axe throwing, horseback riding, arts/crafting, knot-tying, geocaching, and beyond. Plus, there are tons of educational programs that teach guests about local wildlife like bears and wolves. And here’s a tip: If you’re craving some adult-only time, choose to register your child (ages 3+) for summer day camp. Grown-ups can do some adventuring of their own while the kids get a taste of what summer’s supposed to be. And as for food, there’s an array of on-site dining options available. Everyone will feel like a kid at Snow Mountain Ranch, and the secret’s out—cabins book far in advance, so be sure to secure your spot well ahead of time. The drive from the Valley takes nearly 13 hours—but it’s quite lovely.

CHEFS FROM ACROSS THE GLOBE NOW CALL LOCAL KITCHENS HOME ARTICLE BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ
Food is love. It is also the chance to learn something new, be it be about an ingredient, flavor, or even the story of its chef. Each of these chefs here not only ensures each meal under their watch provides an exquisite epicurean adventure, but also teaches diners something special about their origins.
Glai Baan roughly means “far from home.” “Given I am from Thailand, the name is literal,” says Co-owner and Chef Cat Bannag. “However, the restaurant itself is a converted house, so while far from my technical home, I feel very at home here.” Bannag grew up in Bangkok. “I moved to Florida in 2000, where I worked as a server, and met Dan Robinson, a restaurant regular. We fell in love, and I moved to the Valley with the Arizona State alum in 2011,” says Bannag. Here, she cooked her native cuisine constantly for Robinson and friends. “Dan and I soon got it in our minds to create a space where Phoenicians could try true, authentic Thai food. Enter Glai Baan in 2017,” says Bannag. Each dish on the menu—from the Kanom Jeeb Steamed Pork Dumplings to the Peek Gai Tod Chicken Wings—are inspired by Bangkok. GlaiBaanAZ.com

Patrick Gaudet
Patrick Gaudet, the executive chef at Canopy by Hilton Scottsdale Old Town currently heading up Cobre Kitchen + Cocktails, Outrider Rooftop Lounge, and their catering, hails from Saskatchewan, Canada. “Growing up, I loved being in the kitchen,” says Gaudet. “My mom and dad each had 12 siblings, so cooking for the family was like catering for a small army, and it was a blast.” After taking professional cooking courses in Vancouver, Gaudet earned a position at Fairmont Banff Springs in the late 1990s. “Each low season, we traveled to other properties that needed us, and in 2001,
the Scottsdale Fairmont Princess came calling. A three-month position turned into a five-year career there,” says Gaudet, who would also earn positions with The Wigwam and The Phoenician before moving to Canopy in 2020. And while there is neither copious maple syrup in his dishes nor poutine on his menus (yet), Gaudet is using his skills to showcase nutritious and healthy takes of full-flavored food—a staple cooking style in Canada—to the masses. “We also source locally whenever possible, much like we do in my home country,” says Gaudet. Marcellino Verzino Entering Marcellino Ristorante feels like entering a love story set in the Mediterranean. That is because—in many ways—you are. Co-founder and Executive Chef Marcellino Verzino was born and raised on a farm in the Campania region of Italy. His earliest days were spent in the fields, caring for the animals and enjoying true “farm-to-table” cuisine nightly. “We lost my mother when I was 12, so I began cooking for my family,” says Verzino. By 21 he was a personal chef in Rome, leading to positions at restaurants across the region, including Calabria, Abruzzo, and even the island of Poros. “I moved to New York in 1996, and it changed my life,” says Verzino, who not only earned an Award of Excellence from The New York Times for his food, but met his now-wife, Sima. The couple relocated to Scottsdale in 2003, soon after opening Marcellino Ristorante in Phoenix. Its success led to an expansion and move for the restaurant and couple to Old Town Scottsdale in 2010. Today, the Verzinos work side-by-side, with chef in the kitchen and Sima leading the front of the house. The specialty of the house: Verzino’s own family recipes and dishes he developed during his years leading kitchens across Europe and New York. “It is my honor to have guests embrace and love who I am and what I create for them,” says Verzino. Dushyant Singh In 2021, Dushyant Singh was announced as executive chef of all culinary operations at Andaz Scottsdale Resort & Bungalows, including Weft & Warp Art Bar + Kitchen, Turquoise Pool Bar, in-room dining, and banquets. “Since joining, I’ve worked with our talented team to create a menu bursting with exceptionally bold flavors and focused on globally inspired ingredients,” says Singh, who was born and raised in New Delhi, India. Singh began cooking in earnest after high school when he took a training course on hospitality. “The program included time in the kitchen, where it was love at first dish,” says Singh, who in 2002 made his way to the United States to hone his skills. Upon graduating from the Culinary Institute of America in 2005, he was recruited by Hyatt Gainey Ranch. He worked there and then at Sheraton Grand at Wild Horse Pass before earning his first executive chef position at The Westin in Chicago. “After three frigid winters, I made my way back via a culinary director role with The Camby, followed by a similar role at Blue Hound Kitchen + Cocktails. During Covid19, I worked for Fox Restaurant Concepts before finding my new home at Andaz,” he says. AndazScottsdale.com

Jacques Qualin When celebrity chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten is a fan of your food, you know you are doing something right. Chef Jacques Qualin, a native of the Franche-Comté region of France, was personally chosen by Vongerichten in 2009 to lead J&G Steakhouse at The Phoenician. “I got my start at just 16 near my hometown in France, where I earned a hotel kitchen apprenticeship,” says Qualin, who would soon see his star rise in Paris, cooking under Michelin-rated chef Michel de Matteis and celebrated chef Claude DeLigne before making the move to New York City to work at the famed Le Cirque. Catching Vongerichten’s attention in New York, it was not long before the two were working together at Vongerichten’s Jean-Georges, a Two Michelin Star AAA Five Diamond French eatery overlooking Central Park. “After a brief stint overseeing my own concept in upstate New York, Jean-Georges approached me about moving to the Valley to collaborate on a sophisticated steakhouse using French technique and flavors from around the world,” says Qualin. “How could I pass that up? All these years later, I still love it here.” JGSteakhouseScottsdale.com

Dr. Cacinda Maloney has traveled every six weeks of her life for over 30 years. But now she travels more than that, visiting 47 countries in 2016, 20 countries in 2017, and 15 countries in 2018 and 2019. She has traveled to 93 countries so far. She has hiked to Machu Picchu, galloped on camels at sunrise in Jordan, rappelled a 100-foot waterfall in Costa Rica, kayaked in the Galapagos, sailed through Greece, floated in the Dead Sea, marveled at the markets of Guatemala, went river boating down the Amazon basin in Guyana, roamed the streets of Istanbul, rode a luxury train through the Golden Triangle of India, and gawked at the Taj Mahal—just to name a few.
