LIFESTYLE LETTER
The Big Brown Wall
March 2022 PUBLISHER
Tammy Fellows | tammy.fellows@citylifestyle.com EDITOR
Let me tell you a story about the big brown wall in my family room. You see it almost immediately when you walk into my house. It’s giant. And it’s ugly. In fact, the first thing my husband and I said when we were looking at this house before we bought it was—and I quote—“Wow, that’s ugly! Repainting that will be our first project right after we move in!” (Ahem, apologies to the previous owners if you’re reading this!) Fast-forward nine years. While we’ve done some renovations on our home, that ugly wall is still there, waiting to see what we’d do to the rest of the surrounding room so that the paint we’d pick would complement it. Life happens. The kids were young and needed a lot of attention. Then they were older and needed a lot of rides. Work was busy. The dog needed playtime. The hours, days, and years flew by. But (ugly wall aside) that is what made our house a home. The hustle and bustle, the love, and the dinners together (mostly) every night. Speaking of home, welcome to our Home Issue. How stunning is that home on our cover? Wow! Take a peek at the French countryside-inspired chateau (um, yes, please!) in this issue. We also share some of the latest in smart home technology, showcase a new exclusive community, tell the story of the new executive chef of elements at Sanctuary on Camelback Mountain, and more. As for my house, we're actually looking to truly renovate it now, and with it will finally come paint to that wall. Stay tuned. Yours,

ARTICLE BY MICHELLE GLICKSMAN France or Arizona? Though this French countryside-inspired chateau inspires images of the pathways and lanterns of the Louvre's Jardin des Tuileries in Paris—or one of Monet’s paintings—it is actually located right here in the Valley, sitting on 4.62 acres in the exclusive area of Cameldale in Paradise Valley and offering incredible views of Camelback Mountain and The Praying Monk. “The home is the perfect amalgamation of Old World style with New World finishes—it has been entirely updated with all of the finest luxuries one would expect of an estate of this magnitude,” says Joan Levinson, with Joan Levinson Realty Group. The main residence encompasses 12,000 square feet, and features seven bedrooms, wood-burning fireplaces imported from France, courtyards, a wine-tasting and cigar room, a wine relaxing room, a two-story library, and more. There are also two additional structures on the property (for a total of 21,370 square feet, eight bedrooms, and 11 bathrooms)—a guest home, and a structure that includes an indoor half-basketball court, 300-capacity club room with bar, an antique fireplace, a kitchen, and an exercise room. A Hartley Greenhouse custom-built in England is also on the grounds, and it includes a vegetable garden and handmade ironwork, and a solar farm atop one of the accessory structures. “Every area enchants with custom details and elegance. The property impeccably balances large, open spaces with quiet, intimate ones,” Levinson shares. The home is currently for sale, listed at $18 million. For more information, visit JoanLevinson.com.

Kitchen Samantha Sanz Takes the Reins, and Begins Her Reign at elements at Sanctuary on Camelback Mountain
A new era has dawned at Sanctuary on Camelback Mountain. Not only is one of the jewels of Paradise Valley now under the leadership of Gurney’s Resorts, a family of luxury hotels with locations across the United States, but in January, two-time James Beardnominated chef Samantha Sanz was named the new face of elements, Sanctuary’s award-winning signature eatery. She stepped into the role after longtime elements chef and Food Network darling Beau MacMillan transitioned to the resort’s culinary advisor. The position represents a full-circle moment in Sanz’s life.

Born and raised in Mexico, where her family owned a restaurant, Sanz grew up in the kitchen. “When I was 6, I picked up a skillet and started cooking while my mother’s back was turned. And I never stopped,” says Sanz, who in 2008 moved to Arizona to attend the Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts. Her first professional cooking job? “Nearly 15 years ago, I began my professional career as a pantry chef at elements, so this is my second time around here,” says Sanz, who still remembers her earliest days at the restaurant, including one night where an entire pan of sea bass marinating in miso sauce spilled on her, leading to an eight-hour shift smelling of fish. A quick study with the perfect combination of natural talent and eager-to-hone skill, Sanz’s star rose quickly. After breaking into the business with MacMillan as a mentor, Sanz would move on to Virtù Honest Craft, mentoring under chef Gio Osso and serving as chef de cuisine, and then to Talavera at the Four Seasons Resort Scottsdale at Troon North, where she spent five years and earned her two James Beard nominations. Sanz departed Talavera amid the Covid-19 pandemic, finding her way back home to elements in late 2020. The move gave her the opportunity to reunite with MacMillan and to dream up farm-fresh American cuisine for the eatery, but with her signature Asian and Latin accents, and amidst some of the most breathtaking views in the Southwest. Her enhanced role will bring her center stage at the restaurant, as well as with the media, and at intimate luxury wine and cocktail pairing dinners for which the restaurant is known. Most notably, Sanz recently headed February’s James Beard Foundation Taste America Phoenix dinner at the resort in partnership with acclaimed chefs from across the state, including Rochelle Daniel of Fat Ox and Atria. “It takes a village, and we have one here at Sanctuary,” says Sanz. “I do everything in partnership with our resort Executive Chef Landon Post, Bar Chef Christiaan Röllich, Sommelier Laura Bruno, and team of talented chefs, bartenders, and service staff.” SanctuaryOnCamelback.com

Shea Homes Brings New Residential Community to The Phoenician Area

The Signature in Resort Living

Signature at The Phoenician, a Shea Signature community, is a new boutique neighborhood opening adjacent to the famed luxury resort The Phoenician. Once complete, the resort-style community will consist of 34 residences and seven different floor plans within a gated community. The parcel of land on which the community will be built once belonged to The Phoenician, and had served as the golf course maintenance yard. “What sets this community apart from others nearby is that these are single-family, detached homes,” says Megan Kellis, Shea Homes community representative. “Most other homes in this area are condos and townhomes. And, you just can't beat this location.” CONTINUED >

Signature at The Phoenician is centrally located in the Camelback Corridor at the southern base of Camelback Mountain, and just minutes away from world-class dining, shopping, and entertainment. Shea Homes, in collaboration with award-winning firms Greey | Pickett and Cosan Studio, designed the community. The homes feature transitional and contemporary architectural design, with fresh and modern exteriors that offer an attractive juxtaposition to the surrounding rugged desert backdrop. There are seven distinct floor plans ranging in size from 2,300 to 4,000 square feet, and each features sweeping views of the majestic desert, Camelback Mountain, and/or the resort's golf course. “The Shea Signature residences have the same modern look as the homes in our Azure community, adjacent to the upcoming Ritz-Carlton,” says Kellis. “The buyers really liked the style,

and so the Signature homes were designed with that in mind.” The residences have been entirely sold virtually, without Shea Homes building any models to showcase the community. “Our first phase of homes broke ground in June 2021 and have an estimated completion of spring 2022,” Kellis says. “The homes in our last phase will break ground in spring 2022 and deliver in 2023.” Future planned amenities at Signature include a resort-style community area with a private pool, well-appointed fitness studio, and stylish outdoor gathering spaces. “Buyers will also have the option to purchase a Resident Access Program Card allowing access to some of The Phoenician's amenities,” says Kellis. “There will be a pedestrian pathway connecting the community to the resort.” SignaturePHX.com

AMARA RESORT AND SPA COMPLETES MULTIMILLION-DOLLAR RENOVATION—AND CONTINUES TO WOW ARTICLE BY MICHELLE GLICKSMAN
Just a quick drive north to Sedona brings vistas of stunning red rocks, a walkable area of quaint shops and art galleries, and resorts nestled creekside, like the Amara Resort and Spa. A beloved favorite of both Valley residents and those from around the globe, the destination recently underwent a multimillion-dollar renovation of its 100 guestrooms and its public spaces, including the resort's signature restaurant SaltRock Southwest Kitchen and award-winning Amara Spa. “Amara’s refreshed look takes inspiration from the surrounding red rocks and brings the outdoors in to create a 'tree-lodge' aesthetic by encompassing the five elements of nature—earth, wood, metal, fire, and water,” a resort spokesperson explains. Changes to note include the rich wooden elements such as headboards handcrafted from local fallen trees, and walk-in showers with rain shower heads and large porcelain tile that reflect the look of sandstone layers in the guestrooms. In the lobby, view the chandeliers inspired by star constellations. And in SaltRock, spot Himalayan salt accent walls. Of course, there are also flooring and furnishing changes throughout, and other refreshes. At the spa, not only have the finishes and features been changed, but there's also a new 24-hour fitness center and retail outpost. The resort's event areas have also all been elevated. When I arrived at the boutique resort, I was greeted with a view of the stunning Cleopatra Red Rock Formation and Snoopy Rock, which can be seen framed through the glass windows of its lobby. The property itself is not only set amongst Sedona's stunning red rocks, but it’s nestled against the banks of Oak Creek. It also sits just below the main Uptown shopping area.

In addition to a welcoming lobby, cozy rooms, and the spa, the property features a negative-edge pool and hot tub, as well as lush green foliage. A nearby lawn area is complete with lawn games—including a giant Connect Four and cornhole. Just steps from there, a path leads to the creek. When you’re ready to dine, make it a point to eat at SaltRock. The restaurant offers breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with menu items ranging from a Pork Belly Tostada or burger (lunch) to Branzino or the Filet Mignon (dinner). It also offers a number of signature craft margaritas, tequilas, and mezcal drinks, served both in the restaurant and at the inviting indoor bar. If you venture off the property, it's just a brief walk up a short hill to the town, where you can wander amongst the shops and restaurants, and take in the views. There is plenty to do in Sedona, from hiking to Jeep tours to sightseeing, and yes, to relaxing—preferably while floating in a negative-edge pool, with the stunning scenery nearby, at a perfectly cozy, recently stunningly renovated resort. Bright Ideas in Smart Home Technology ARTICLE BY GERI KOEPPEL
From Lighting to Listening, Home Automation is Easier than Ever

G E A R GU ID E | HOM E + DE S I GN
Goodbye, complicated thermostats. So long, key codes for contractors. Hello to letting there be light—and heating, cooling, audiovisual, and security—all at the touch of a button or voice command. Today’s smart home technology is easier than ever to use thanks to advances in automation. “The key to success with any of these smart features is to make them easy to use,” notes Melissa Mitchell, systems designer for Wipliance, which specializes in turnkey solutions for smart homes. Home automation is particularly important in secondary homes, Mitchell notes. “You can turn on the pool heater three days before you get there. You can set the thermostat when you’re on the tarmac so you can make sure the home is comfortable when you get there.” And no matter where you are in the world, you can use an app to let in cleaners and contractors, watch them on your security cameras, and lock up when they leave. In fact, cameras are at the top of the list for most luxury homeowners looking into beefing up automation, according to Haley Dickey, head of brand for Monarch AV and co-owner of the company along with her husband, CEO Derek Dickey. “That’s their number one concern—making sure it’s completely outfitted for security,” she says. Cameras now are more intelligent, she remarks, with high-resolution images and the ability to track a person as they move through the property. Instead of keeping track of various apps for cameras, garage doors, lighting, security, audio-visual, and so on, everything can be integrated into one app. “It’s all housed in one place for clients,” states Dickey. Both Monarch AV and Wipliance use Control4 as the go-to umbrella app for controlling everything.
“You’re able to access everything” with it, Mitchell notes. Today’s apps are fully customizable, as well. “We take photos of each room so when you use the app, you can see the room,” Dickey says. “You can visually see what you’re doing in the app.” Mitchell also notes, “Everyone lives in their home a little bit differently, so there’s no one-size-fits-all for automation.” Everything is programmable, Dickey explains, so you can hit a “welcome” button when you come in to turn on certain lights and open or close shades, and then hit a “goodnight” button to turn everything off without having to leave your bedroom. Also, keypads or touch screens and voice controls are strategically placed around the house, Dickey notes, so that guests who don’t have the app on their phone can use the system. While apps can sync with voice-controlled devices such as Alexa and Echo, Mitchell notes that Josh.ai is an alternative voice-control platform that doesn’t sell or share any data, so it offers privacy (though it is at a luxury price point). One of the most rapid advances in home automation has been with LED lighting, according to Mitchell. “Light should change throughout the day,” she explains, with warmer tones in the morning and evening, and cooler tones during the day. Also popular are applications for color in lighting, whether for holiday decorating or parties. Motorized shading is another helpful tool, Mitchell points out. “If your shades aren’t motorized, they’re likely always in one position: always closed or always open.” Programming them allows in heat and light in the winter and keeps them out during the summer. “The key to success with any of these smart features is to make them easy to use,” notes Melissa Mitchell, systems designer for Wipliance.
Automated outdoor shades are also essential in Arizona, as are programmable outdoor lighting and audio—especially on large lots. “They want to feel like they’re at a concert,” Dickey says. “If you’re on a couple acres of land, you need more power.” Audio-visual controls in living rooms and home theaters are in high demand right now as more people are enjoying entertainment at home, Mitchell says. “One of the biggest products in demand for us right now is an AV receiver that all of the speakers and components plug into,” she notes.

She also advises investing in a robust network with multiple access points, which is “the foundation of everything smart home,” she declares. However, Mitchell warns not to rely on WiFi alone. Even though the name Wipliance comes from a blend of “wireless appliance,” she explains, hard wiring is more reliable, so she suggests planning ahead to add it when building a new home or doing a renovation. “WiFi’s great, but it’s not the end-all, be-all,” she states.
