LIFESTYLE LETTER

Happy February

February 2022 PUBLISHER

Tammy Fellows | tammy.fellows@citylifestyle.com EDITOR

It’s the night we’re going to press on this issue and I’m sitting at my computer, staring at a blank page, and thinking about what I should write about for this February Editor’s Note. As I’m brainstorming ideas, I’m enjoying spoonfuls of Ben & Jerry’s Cherry Garcia ice cream. I haven’t eaten it in years, but it caught my eye while grocery shopping earlier today. I realized that it was a little ironic. Those who knew me way back during my college days would know that Cherry Garcia was my go-to during girlfriend get-togethers when any of us would have dating issues and feel sad. Now, I’m sitting here at my home computer, my husband in the other room, and my kids laughing in the background. My dog is at my feet (ok, scrounging for any food she thinks I may have dropped, but I’ll take it!), and I’m working doing a job that I dreamed about—running a magazine—as I was earning my journalism degree back then. I’m surrounded by love and happiness everywhere. How lucky am I? I hope that this “month of love” is like that for you, too—whether it’s family, friends, work, hobbies, or anything else that makes you happy. Speaking of love, February marks our “Local Love” issue. We explored the area through a variety of romantic restaurants, showcase Kelley Durham's travels, visit Northern Arizona wine country, and so much more. We also spoke with actress Jen Lilley about her tie to a local nonprofit. As for our cover story, we caught up with David Foster, who is once again heading back to the Valley to participate as musical director for Celebrity Fight Night (CFN). CFN merged with Gateway for Cancer Research last spring (it’s now called Gateway Celebrity Fight Night). Read all about the icon and what he's been up to, and his involvement with the event. I hope this month brings you happiness and surrounds you with love. Happy Galentine’s Day, Valentine’s Day, and an all-around great February. Yours,

From the

PUBLISHER LOVE IS IN THE AIR….

We are now into the swing of 2022—it’s February and we have settled in and are working on the things we said we’d focus on for the New Year. How is that going? Check in on it. Does it still make sense? Things change, and that’s okay. The most important thing is to stay focused. Love is a huge part of this… self-love; love for life; and love for family, friends, and furbabies. My life motto is and remains to be… all you need is love (yes, the line made famous by the beloved Beatles). I know this to be true. No matter what your situation is, at the end of the day it comes down to love. It feeds us, it fuels us, it keeps us honest and pure. Never lose sight of love! Obviously, love is a focal point in February because of the “Hallmark holiday” we all recognize as Valentine’s Day. Maybe take another look and use this time as an excuse to get back to the basics and what we all need…love. I love what I do! Our connection to the community is strong, and we appreciate that. We are grateful for those whose stories we get to share! We love that we help businesses connect and thrive in our community! On that note, let’s give a warm shout-out to some of the stories we get to share in this month’s issue of Paradise Valley City Lifestyle. First, our cover story is all about a long-standing local event to Arizona, Celebrity Fight Night, now in support of Gateway for Cancer Research. Hear from its musical director, David Foster. Hear from actress and philanthropist Jen Lilley on her support of locally based nonprofit organization Childhelp. And, discover the best restaurants to enjoy a romantic meal at with your Valentine this year! Lastly, learn about some amazing Arizona wineries to try. We hope you enjoy our February issue—Love Local! Be grateful, be kind, and live well! Tammy Fellows, Owner/Publisher

Love isn’t just in the air—it’s on the plates, in the glasses, and served tableside at the Valley’s oh-so-romantic restaurants all month long.

Love isn’t just in the air—it’s on the plates, in the glasses, and served tableside at the Valley’s oh-so-romantic restaurants all month long. Among the best is BOURBON & BONES (BourbonAndBonesAZ.com). This upscale boutique chophouse features a modern and innovative menu in a hip, sexy atmosphere. From the finest wet- and dry-aged cuts of beef, veal, and pork—both on the bone and off—to fresh seafood, appetizers, sides, and desserts, they offer the best ingredients and put them together in uniquely delicious ways. Prefer a more intimate setting? Opt for SEL (SelRestaurant.com), owned and operated by longtime loves chef Branden Levine and his wife, May. Tucked into a cozy enclave in Old Town Scottsdale, expect progressive, brilliantly plated American cuisine by candlelight from Branden, the former executive chef of Café Monarch (also known for his appearances on the Food Network’s Chef Wanted with Anne Burrell and Beat Bobby Flay). Offering an à la carte menu, as well as traditional and vegetarian prix fixe menus, expect offerings to change with the season but to always deliver big bold flavors. MARCELLINO RISTORANTE (MarcellinoRistorante.com) also boasts a love story. The burning passion between the owners, chef Marcellino and his wife, Sima, is the foundation upon which this passionate restaurant was born. Let the sultry warmth of Marcellino’s interior serve as the canvas, and the authentic, hand-crafted cuisine and exclusively Italian wine list be the brushes that together will paint the perfect date night out. Every morsel, from the chef’s infused pastas to the grilled lamb chops cloaked in a luxurious balsamic reduction, is swoon-worthy. While not run by a starry-eyed couple, LON’S AT THE HERMOSA INN (HermosaInn.com) has many

romantic settings for an intimate dinner experience. First, there is the outdoor dining patio featuring gorgeous flora and fauna, a trickling fountain, and a massive fireplace. Then, there is also the ruggedly handsome indoor dining room illuminated by candlelight. And finally, perhaps the grandest option of all—an underground wine cellar for private dining that offers seating for 12 people total at any given time. Bonus: The adjacent LON’s Last Drop bar and patio is the ideal spot to begin or end a romantic evening, with its handcrafted cocktails and five fireplaces. Speaking of patios, have you visited the HEARTH ’61 (MountainShadows.com) patio at Mountain Shadows? It offers perhaps the best direct views of Camelback Mountain, especially at sunset. The food and cocktail program are as top-notch as the scenery, thanks in great part to the award-winning chef Charles Wiley at the helm. Choose the perfect pairing with a bottle from the award-winning wine selection. Enjoy the restaurant’s chic and sleek atmosphere, rounding out the evening at the ovalshaped bar. For the ultimate date night, visit on a Friday evening to catch the weekly Veuve Clicquot sabering and toast. And finally, there is the granddaddy of dark, romantic, epic culinary adventures: TARBELL’S (Tarbells.com). Not that he needs any introduction, but restaurateur, wine expert, and chef extraordinaire Mark Tarbell is the real deal. A meal at his namesake eatery is a meal from a two-time inductee to the Arizona Hall of Culinary Fame, who has won more than 50 awards for his restaurant—including “best restaurant” from Food & Wine Magazine and the Iron Chef America winner title on the Food Network. Each month, he also hosts luxe sake, bourbon, winemaker, and wine pairing dinners featuring world-renowned sommeliers from around the globe.

GRAMMY AWARD-WINNER DAVID FOSTER ON HIS EXTRAORDINARY CAREER—AND WHAT’S ON THE HORIZON ARTICLE BY MICHELLE GLICKSMAN

S U C C E S S

David Foster’s illustrious career has spanned many aspects of the entertainment industry. He began as a studio musician, arranger, and recording artist, later becoming one of the most successful songwriters and record producers in history. He’s won 16 Grammy Awards from 47 nominations. His career began as the keyboardist for the Canadian band Skylark, where he had his first hit, “Wildflower.” After that, the hits kept coming—he co-wrote Earth, Wine & Fire’s “After the Love Has Gone,” Boz Scaggs’ “Jojo,” and Chicago’s “You’re the Inspiration.” He produced Celine Dion’s “Because You Loved Me,” Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You,” and the debut albums for singers Josh Groban and Michael Bublé. He performs around the country. He’s had numerous television appearances, including as a judge on Asia’s Got Talent. And so, so, so much more. Foster is also the musical director for the Valley’s star-studded Celebrity Fight Night, which recently merged with Gateway for Cancer Research, putting Gateway’s chairman and vice chair, Richard J. Stephenson and Dr. Stacie J. Stephenson, at the helm of the Celebrity Fight Night organization. We sat down with Foster to chat about his career, Celebrity Fight Night, and his new musicals. The show was shrouded in secrecy. They cover you from head to toe when you’re not in costume. We had the best time and we got to create music we never would have done. We were bummed when we got to the finals and lost. If you know Kat, she loves to win, and she was really bummed. And we know all the judges. … They guessed it was us the first show, but [the show was] edited in a way that they don’t show that.

YOU’VE BEEN PART OF CELEBRITY FIGHT NIGHT FOR MANY YEARS…

YOU’VE HAD SUCH AN ILLUSTRIOUS CAREER AND YOU ARE A HOUSEHOLD NAME—BUT HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOURSELF IN ONE SENTENCE? I’m a piano player who has maximized his talent.

WHEN DID YOU KNOW THAT YOU WANTED TO BE INVOLVED IN THE WORLD OF MUSIC? Really early. I was really lucky that I had two great parents, and that we had a piano at home. I started playing at 5. Even though my parents didn’t have a lot of money, we had a piano. My father was an amateur musician and he patiently spent hours and hours teaching me. As long as I can remember, I loved music. When I go to a doctor’s office and the form asks for a profession, I still put musician.

WHAT ACHIEVEMENTS ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF? Aside from my kids? I don’t remember winning my last Grammy, but I distinctly remember winning my first Grammy. It was a song I co-wrote with Earth, Wind & Fire. I had watched the Grammys all my life, so to win one and be on the stage was wonderful. Another was when I made the record Unforgettable with Natalie Cole and her father. It was back in the time before all the technology we have now. Now it would be easy. But it was 30 years ago and we had to work really hard then to make that. It was quite an achievement.

IN 2021, YOU WERE ON THE MASKED SINGER WITH YOUR WIFE, KATHARINE MCPHEE (WHO WAS ACTUALLY ON THE COVER OF OUR MAY 2021 ISSUE!). HOW WAS THAT EXPERIENCE? We went into that during Covid. There was a slowdown in the industry and we didn’t have much happening. We filmed it in the summer. [When they asked us] we originally said no. And then I thought about it. There were some really great singers who [were on it], some notables, and it was something to do every day for two weeks.

28

T R E N D SE T T E R | A RTS + CULTURE

I think it’s been about 20 years. Jimmy [Walker, the founder] has become a great friend of mine, and Sean [Currie, the executive director, Celebrity Fight Night foundation] is amazing. And, it’s Muhammad Ali. He’s the one who started and inspired all this. That’s the beginning and the answer. He was such a force. His best work was done outside the ring. He lit up every room he was in, and you just felt compelled to help. Amazing just doesn’t describe him. I fell in love with the whole event and there’s just nothing I wouldn’t do for him. Even though he’s gone, it feels like he’s still here.

HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT THE NEW PARTNERSHIP AND WORKING WITH THE STEPHENSONS? The only thing constant in the world is change. I think it’s inevitable, and with Muhammad gone for quite a few years, I think it’s a natural progression. The Stephensons are super philanthropic. They are amazing people who have done so much great work in the world. And, they’ve been actively involved with Fight Night for many years, and they’re actively involved with my foundation, and [who] knows how many others. They’re just generous, hardworking people. I think they came along just at the right time. We needed a new face. I know that Lonnie [Ali, Muhammad’s wife] is supportive of this as well. And that was important to Jimmy and Sean and the Stephensons, as well— that Lonnie embrace this concept. The face of Muhammad Ali will never go away.

WHAT HAVE BEEN SOME OF THE HIGHLIGHTS OF THE EVENT FOR YOU OVER THE YEARS? How good I felt about getting Celine Dion there, and I remember Andrea Bocelli and Jennifer Lopez singing a duet together—that’s kind of a rare combination and that was pretty amazing. I remember Garth Brooks getting up to sing impromptu, and I remember Tom Hanks getting up to sing impromptu. I remember Josh Groban and Michael Bublé, my artists, getting their start, sort of, at Fight Night. A lot of great memories.

There were also a couple of incredible speeches, too. Kevin Costner’s tribute to Muhammad was phenomenal, and also so was Billy Crystal’s, and Robin Williams’. They’ve had everybody there.

IN ADDITION TO WORKING WITH CELEBRITY FIGHT NIGHT, YOU ARE VERY PHILANTHROPIC IN OTHER WAYS, INCLUDING THROUGH YOUR OWN FOUNDATION. CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THAT? I got involved 30 years ago with my foundation, and it started out with a very simple request. There are no bad causes—and so anybody who is doing anything for a cause is great—but I got involved in organ transplants for kids, and there was this big void in Canada, and we filled it. We’re on our way to a large endowment where it will continue long after I’m gone. It’s been great work. And it’s real work. It’s not just me putting my name to something. It’s something that I’ve started that I volunteer with all these years.

“I’M WORKING ON TWO MUSICALS THAT HOPEFULLY WILL SEE THE LIGHT OF DAY THIS YEAR—AND MAYBE EVEN MAKE THEIR WAY TO BROADWAY.” WHAT’S ON TAP FOR 2022 OR BEYOND FOR YOU? I’ve been working on these musicals, and they’ve been an ongoing process. … I’m working on two musicals that hopefully will see the light of day this year—and maybe even make their way to Broadway. Who knows? That’s the hope and that’s the goal, and we’re working hard to achieve it.

ANYTHING ELSE YOU’D LIKE TO SHARE? I would just say that I’m a Celebrity Fight Night lifer. I said that 15 years ago and I’ve stayed true to it. It’s very meaningful to me. It’s a big part of my life. Like I said before, there are no bad causes, but this one in particular… I just love it. I can’t imagine not being there. As long as they continue, I will I hope, as long as they’ll have me. And I wish the Stephensons all the luck in the world to just maintain this level of excellence, which I’m sure they will because they’re really good people. Gateway Celebrity Fight Night will be held March 12. For more information or tickets, visit CelebrityFightNight.org.

Carlson Creek's Rule of Three

In November 2021, the Verde Valley Wine Consortium announced the region was federally declared an American Viticulture Area (AVA). The monumental declaration made the wine region just the third AVA in the state of Arizona, with the other two in the Southern Arizona regions of Willcox and Sonoita. What better way to celebrate than to visit Northern Arizona this winter or spring and taste your way around the best the area has to pour? Let’s get started in Cottonwood. Essentially halfway between Prescott and Sedona, Cottonwood is a walkable wonderland for adults and the perfect respite from the daily grind, especially for those who love culinary delights, beer and wine tastings, and outdoor adventures. Currently, there are four working Arizona vineyards with wine tasting rooms along Main Street. The first is Arizona Stronghold Vineyards (AZStronghold.com), which is located in Northern Arizona but uses many grapes sourced from the Southern Arizona AVAs, as well. They are particularly adept at Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvedre, but the best bet is to try a flight of reds and whites to see what you like best. Though the brand is available widely in the Valley, there are sips exclusive to the tasting room, as well as a full kitchen serving tapas, cheese plates, and skewers—including duck, elk, and bison options—so the visit is well worth it. Similarly worth it is Carlson Creek Vineyards (CarlsonCreek.com), which is all of 30 steps from Arizona Stronghold. The name will likely be familiar as there is a tasting room in Scottsdale of the same name with many of the wines, but the barrel-covered space up north is something out of a storybook (and adult one, of course). The Rule of Three should not be missed here, nor should the Sangiovese or Mourvedre. And, if a white fan, the Chardonnay is a palate-pleaser. Next door to Carlson Creek is Pillsbury Wine Company (PillsburyWine.com). Helmed by New Zealand-turnedArizona-resident Sam Pillsbury, the winery excels at sustainable, estate-grown varietals. Tasting flights, wines by the glass, and full bottles are available during a visit, with the Guns and Kisses Shiraz, Wild Child Red Blend, and One Night Stand Rosé being of particular note. Both a pasta paradise and tasting room, Merkin Vineyards Osteria (MerkinVineyards.com) is adjacent to Pillsbury. Founded by Maynard James Keenan, best known as the front man of Tool but becoming known for his skill at winemaking in more recent years, he uses fruit exclusively from his 110 acres of estate vineyards in both the Verde Valley and Willcox. Joining them along Main Street is also Burning Tree Cellars (BurningTreeCellars.com), whose focus is offering several brands, but all are boutique, small-batch vineyards one would never find in a grocery or liquor store. They also always have games such as Cards Against Humanity on hand for visitors, and one of the best patios in the region. Then there is also Winery 101 (Winery101.com), which features wines from the husband and wife winemaker owners; State Bar (Facebook.com/TheWineryBarCottonwood), an indoor-outdoor bar with yard games and both local wines and beers; Provisioner Wines (ProvisionerWine.com), which is a side brand of Arizona Stronghold and has exceptional canned wines and one of the best rosès in the state; and Small Batch Wine & Spirits(AZSmallBatch.com), a family-owned tasting room and bottle shop with both boutique wines and craft beers. Beyond Cottonwood’s ultra-convenient Main Street offerings, be sure to also set aside time for the other similarly spectacular wineries in the AVA, as well. Alcantara Vineyards (AlcantaraVineyard.com) is a long-time favorite. This family-owned vineyard, which is focused on sustainable farming and offers nearly 20 varietals for taste and purchase, along with antipasto, cheese, and sweets plates, not only boasts a massive deck overlooking the Verde River and its vines, but kayak tours before a tasting. About 10 minutes from Alcantara is one of the vineyards that helped put Arizona on the map—Page Springs Cellars

(PageSpringCellars.com). This winery and vineyard are tucked into the volcanic landscape overlooking pristine Oak Creek Canyon. It produces Rhone-style wines, working primarily with Syrah, Petite Sirah, Grenache, and Mourvedre. Just half a mile from Page Springs is Javelina Leap Vineyard, Winery & Bistro (JavelinaLeapWinery. com), which makes about 3,000 cases of estate-grown wine each year and is across the street from both a bird sanctuary (tip: bring your binoculars) and the State Fish Hatchery. And then, less than 30 minutes west of Javelina is the Southwest Wine Center (SouthwestWineCenter.com), which is home to Yavapai College’s Viticulture and Enology program. The full-scale winery and farm features a 13-acre teaching vineyard, where students of all ages take part in the ultimate hands-on approach to learning. But don’t worry—we aren’t suggesting you sign up for classes. Nestled into the vineyard is an opulent tasting room and patio, where wine tastings are available Saturday and Sunday by reservation. Finally, do not miss a taste or two in Jerome. Once a ghost town, the Jerome of today is a mecca for oenophiles, thanks in great part to the previously noted Keenan, who actually lives in the town. Beyond Merkin in Cottonwood, he also has a tasting room, Caduceus Cellars (Caduceus.org), up the hill in Jerome, and people come from all over the world to taste up there. Bite Into Happiness

I NSP IR E D BY | FOOD + BE VE RAGE

“Chocolate is happiness you can eat,” said writer Ursula Kahaupt. Every chocolate lover knows this, of course. When you take a bite of well-made chocolate, your immediate future takes a turn. You enjoy the delicious taste. You involuntarily smile. You notice the beauty around you. You forget your troubles. You get excited about life at that very moment. That’s what eating good, quality chocolate does to you. Even better, when you bite into a locally and healthfully handcrafted bean-to-bar chocolate from Sonhab Chocolates, you are not only supporting a local business and eating a sweet that is healthier for you, but you are also supporting humane working conditions all over the world because Sonhab Chocolates imports its beans from Fair Trade farms. So much good from such a little thing. But let’s start at the beginning. When Kirsten Blue, who owns Sonhab Chocolates along with her husband, Cody Liebetreu, began having some serious health issues, she had to eat healthy ingredients—so she needed to prepare a lot of food in her own kitchen. This is when she began making her own chocolate. When her friends and family loved her chocolate creations and wanted more and more, the couple created Sonhab Chocolates. The pair makes their chocolates literally from bean to bar. This means an arduous process that takes days and close observation and care to complete. The ingredients in the chocolate do not contain allergens such as gluten, dairy, or soy. In fact, customers can also order their chocolates with “adaptogens” added. Adaptogens are ingredients like ashwagandha, astralagus, and reishi mushrooms, among several options, which are said to enhance health.

Blue created—and continues to create—all kinds of chocolate bars and bon bons. The Adaptogenic Flower Cacao Bar is a work of art, both visually and gastronomically. It lifts the mood and sharpens focus as its flavors cascade on your tongue. Its terroir contributes to the taste experience—terroir means the soil where its beans grew. Biting in, you will taste some nutty and fruity notes, with the main ingredients being cacao, pistachios, coconut, rose petals, and edible flowers. Sonhab Chocolate’s Adaptogenic Almond Butter Bon Bons are a special treat, beautiful on the outside and truly amazing on the inside, containing almond butter, coconut sugar, cacao, vanilla, black lava salt, and, of course, rose petals. You can order online at Sonhab.com, or buy them at Abundant Space in Scottsdale, and Futuro Coffee, Buena Vida Bodega, and Local Nomad in Phoenix. Enjoy your bite into happiness.

Romance Wanting to Stay Home This Valentine’s Day? Upgrade Your Backyard’s Romantic Ambiance 44

M UST SE E | HOM E + D ES I GN

You don’t have to leave your home to experience the many luxuries of a romantic getaway— whether that’s sipping a glass of champagne while soaking in an outdoor spa at sunset, enjoying a therapeutic massage under the nighttime stars, or stepping into the warmth of a private outdoor rain shower. If a romantic getaway is what you and your partner are looking for, there are limitless ways to create this escape right in your own backyard.

THE MASTER RETREAT Have an exterior patio off of your master bedroom? This is one of the best places to create romance. Imagine stepping out of your bedroom into the privacy of an outdoor cabana. Purchase or have a masseuse bring massage tables for a couple’s massage, and add a small water fountain or play the sounds of a waterfall to complete the experience. Twinkling lights are also a nice touch. Looking toward the future, complete the space with a rain shower, soaking tub, or heated spa.

DINNER UNDER THE STARS There’s no need to fly to Italy to experience the romance of al fresco dining. Imagine the intimacy of a patio with a small candlelit dining table and chairs, the warm glow of café string lights above, wrapped in the privacy of trellises overflowing with jasmine-scented vines (or flowers or aromatherapy will do, too). Or, if you and your partner enjoy cooking, why not create the outdoor kitchen of your dreams? There’s nothing more romantic than cooking for your partner and eating under the stars.

A FIRESIDE RETREAT To really get things heated up, add (or use, if you already have!) your wood-burning or gas fire pit. Add comfortable chairs or a daybed, sip on a glass of your favorite wine, and relax by the warmth. Play some romantic music, grab a cozy blanket, and snuggle in. It’s the perfect way to end the evening.

MEET KELLEY DURHAM, A VALLEY ATTORNEY ON A QUEST FOR KNOWLEDGE

48

O UR TOWN | TR AVEL

LEARN. TRAVEL. INSPIRE.

Live life to the fullest—a cliché saying, but one that resonates with local attorney Kelley Durham. Durham is an accident injury lawyer, animal advocate, amateur photographer, baseball enthusiast, and world traveler who attributes her zest for life to her late grandmother, Georgia Talbott. “I lived with my grandma and she was my mother figure,” Durham says. “She inspired me and taught me the importance of helping others.” Durham grew up with a passion for volunteering, and says that is the reason she chose law as a career. “I became a lawyer because I’ve always wanted to help people,” she shares. She’s been in the legal industry for over 20 years, and became a lawyer 15 years ago. The past six years she’s been running her own practice, K Durham Law PLLC. Durham is also president of the Phoenix Zoo Auxiliary, the zoo’s oldest volunteer fundraising organization. “I absolutely adore animals and I have so many fond memories of going to the zoo with my grandma,” she says. “It’s truly an honor to be a part of the Phoenix Zoo Auxiliary.” Her love for animals has spanned her lifetime; in her youth, Durham wanted to be a marine biologist, a passion that stemmed

from her interest in sharks. Although her career path changed, her interest in the ocean and sharks has only grown. “Sharks are so misunderstood and they really get a bad rap,” Durham says. “Ever since I was a little girl I’ve always been fascinated by them and I’ve always wanted to learn more about them.” That desire for knowledge has led her around the globe on thrill-seeking adventures, such as cage dives with great white sharks at Guadalupe Island and in Mossel Bay, South Africa. She has also gone diving in the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, and has been on multiple safaris in South Africa. Durham says she enjoys traveling because she wants to see the world and learn as much as she can about people and other cultures. She’s also traveled throughout Europe, the Caribbean, and the Mexican Riviera. “I just got back from the Dominican Republic,” she says. “We went to watch some winter league baseball. The games there are electric; every one is like the World Series.” While on her adventures Durham always takes beautiful photos, some of which are displayed in her law office. She insists she is not a photographer, but her work garners positive attention. CONTINUED >

“People always ask about the photos,” she says. “And they are always shocked to learn that I took them. I’m not a professional by any means. I guess I just have a good eye.” Adventure, learning, and personal growth are never-ending for Durham, and she is planning another excursion that will take her back to Africa and Europe. “Other people’s perspectives are just as important as your own,” she says. “To me, life is about growth and learning, and learning from others can make life better.” KNDLegal.com

ACTRESS & ADVOCATE JEN LILLEY ON HER CAREER, MOTHERHOOD, AND TIES TO A LOCAL NONPROFIT

54

A RT IST ’S PA LE T T E | EN TE RTAI NME NT

Actress, singer, and philanthropist Jen Lilley is one busy woman. A star on both the big and small screens, she has worked on numerous well-known projects throughout her 15-plus year career, including NBC’s iconic daytime series Days of Our Lives, ABC’s General Hospital, the Academy Award-winning film The Artist, and multiple Hallmark Channel movies. Perhaps most meaningful to her personally though is her journey as a mom and advocate for children. “Every project is so unique that it’s hard to pick,” she says when asked about her favorite projects and accolades. “… I suppose my top three professional projects are The Spirit of Christmas, U.S.S. Christmas, and The Artist, if I had to pick. And personally, being a foster and adoptive parent through Childhelp and working to establish the Tulsa Girls’ Home are my greatest achievements.”

JEN LILLE Y

This year, she has a lot to look forward to career-wise and at home. “I’m expecting another baby in May, hoping to get a The Spirit of Christmas sequel off the ground, and I have some exciting things in the works with television’s newest family-friendly network, GAC Family,” she says. Lilley’s new bundle of joy will make her a mom of four, two of whom were fostered and then adopted with the assistance of Childhelp, a Phoenix-based national nonprofit dedicated to helping abused, neglected, and at-risk children. Lilley has been working with the nonprofit since 2011, and will be at this year’s Drive the Dream Gala (ChildhelpDriveTheDream.org), taking place on Feb. 12 at The Phoenician. “I could literally write a book on my foster care journey and the ways it’s shaped me and adjusted my perspective on so many things in life, but I’ll simply say that being a foster and adoptive parent is the greatest experience of my life,” Lilley shares. “While foster parenting is also the hardest thing I’ve ever done, it’s the most rewarding. The way it breaks you as a person is difficult but beautiful, because it opens your heart to new levels of love and empathy you really can’t experience any other way… I understand that not everyone is called to be a foster parent, but everyone is called to care for the children in the broken foster care system. “These are children who experienced an extremely traumatic set of circumstances through no fault of their own, who deserve the same love, safety, and education as any other child,” she continues. “If we don’t do something, who will? There are so many ways to get involved.” For those with questions on fostering or adoption, Lilley shares that she is approachable and open to chat via her Instagram @Jen_Lilley. Learn more about her career at JenLilley.com.
