LIFESTYLE LETTER

Happy Holidays!

December 2022 PUBLISHER

Tammy Fellows | tammy.fellows@citylifestyle.com EDITOR

For me, it’s the smell of my mom’s holiday cookies. That’s how I know the holidays have arrived. She made them when I was growing up, making the dough ahead of time and freezing it so that my sister and I could then cut it into shapes and decorate it. There would be sugar sprinkles, regular sprinkles, frosting, and chocolate chips waiting to decorate with. The smell of those cookies always immediately makes me feel loved and wraps me in the warmth of family memories. The holidays are here, and as the spirit of the season is among us, we often try to replicate what made it feel so magical to us in our youth. The traditions we set for our own families often mirror some of what we experienced as a child, whether it is the smells, the sounds, the lights, the holiday activities—or a combination of it all that reflects that best. In addition to cookies, for us, it is also gathering for an afternoon of family time with grandparents, aunts, and cousins, and a pile of presents in the middle. We also spend an evening as a family, dressed in pajamas and with cups of hot chocolate, driving around and looking at lights. And, we adopt a family to give them some cheer at the holidays, too. This month, we wanted to highlight the magic of the season and what our city has to offer that helps spread holiday cheer. We include some of the big holiday events around the Valley, holiday fashions, and a behind-thescenes look at Ballet Arizona’s The Nutcracker. We also showcase a passionate entrepreneur, amazing side dishes, and more. While this season can be beautiful for some, it can be painful and lonely for others, especially those who have recently lost a loved one. In the true spirit of the season, let’s take care of those in our community who need assistance or who are alone. My hope for you this season is that you feel love and peace, and that we all remember to take care of each other, extending grace, empathy, and love. Happy holidays and see you in 2023! Yours,

letter from the PUBLISHER

These are a few of my favorite things … I don’t know about you, but the day after Thanksgiving, I begin to blast the holiday tunes. It always puts me in the best mood! It tends to drive my kids a little nuts, but I can’t help it. The holiday spirit is floating around everywhere you turn … ’tis the season to be jolly! The holidays are my favorite time of year, so much hustle and bustle, festive events, holiday lights, delicious food, divine cocktails, endless traditions, and of course, fun times and traditions with friends and family. Some of my favorite traditions include ... The night of Thanksgiving we do a family ornament exchange, and each person brings an unmarked wrapped tree ornament. It is a game of acquiring for your favorite ornament with three possessions and two steals allowed as they get unwrapped. Another tradition takes place the morning of Christmas Eve. We gather with family for a wonderful breakfast and then pack up family meals that we shopped for earlier and create an assembly line to put them all together, then we drive to find those in need to hand them out— it feels so good! Lastly, on the night of Christmas Eve, we always give our boys new pj’s to sleep in, and my husband and I exchange them for each other, as well! I hope you can find the spirit of the holidays. If you need encouragement, check out the famous movie Scrooged, starring Bill Murray (one of my favorites). At the end of the movie, he encapsulates so well the true meaning and joy that can come this time of year. It is so magical, and he is right—we can all have this joy, every day, all year long! We hope you enjoy the magic of the holiday season! Be grateful, be kind, and live well, Tammy Fellows Owner/Publisher

Leader Among Leaders Dena Patton’s Rigorous Professional Coaching and Training Draws Powerful CEOs, Celebrities, and Movers and Shakers From Around the Globe

Dena Patton was a young entrepreneur helming her own successful business in the bustling Big Apple. She was living the dream she had taken a chance on and had worked so hard for when, at 27, she suffered a minor stroke. While she was learning how to speak—and basically live—again, it would’ve been easy for her to become bitter over the harsh hand life had dealt her. However, the native Phoenician chose the opposite attitude. “For me, I call it my blessed interruption. When we look at devastating things, if we look at it as a lesson and find the blessing in it, it changes our whole perspective,” Patton says. As she worked to get back on track, that life-changing experience became a career reawakening, as well—it resulted in Patton opening her coaching and training business that helps top entrepreneurs build their businesses to new heights of impact and income. Over the last 21 years, Patton has been instrumental in more than 1,000 high-powered business leaders elevating their professional and personal lives through her coaching programs. One of her most popular

programs is a three-day VIP retreat that takes place at Sanctuary Camelback Mountain resort, where she focuses one-on-one with her clients, mostly CEOs, business leaders, and celebrities, all of whom are willing to undergo the rigorous coaching for which she is known. Patton’s clients fly in from around the world thanks to elite word of mouth. “Most of my clients are from different industries, but they are all out to change the world. They want to live and lead in their greatness and build a great company—that’s what they have in common,” Patton says. One of them, Nancy Beck, CEO of Beck Financial Strategies, says, “The three-day retreat at the Sanctuary resort with Dena sparked large change and growth for my business. It’s hard for a lot of leaders and CEOs to disconnect from their busy lives and take the time to invest in our brand and ourselves. But it has led to months of growth, self-reflection, and growth opportunities, and we continue to use Dena’s strategies to focus on and achieve our goals.”

“A coaching relationship is a very beautiful, confidential relationship. It is based on trust, on both sides. You cannot get the coach and not be willing to do the work. What we need now is more great leaders, and that’s why I love what I do.” — DENA PATTON

At age 21, Patton moved from her hometown of Phoenix to New York City with a dream. At 24, she was running her own PR and marketing firm that served the entertainment industry in film, Broadway, and TV. At 27 came the stroke. She realized how her bad work habits led to 17-hour workdays, a poor diet, and high stress. “It made me look at who I was being, how I was running my business, and running my life … I would not have the life, the company, and the global reach I have today without that happening,” Patton says. After her recovery, at age 28, she sold that business and started anew by building her next business, Dena Patton Coaching & Training. She specialized in helping business owners with their marketing strategy and internal systems. But, she soon learned that a leader’s mindset is the crucial element of their success, so she began mindset training, and spent much of her time researching very successful people and their mindsets. After 10 years she wrote her best-selling book The Greatness Game: How to live and lead like you mean it. She also added mindset and leadership training to her methodology, which is the secret behind her client’s results. Post-pandemic is proving to be very busy for Patton. She is seeing that more leaders are taking a hard look at their companies—from improving their values, culture, strategies, systems, and productivity to the need to attract quality employees to stay competitive. The partnership begins with a consultation. Patton goes over goals and shares the expectations, on both sides. If the client is not a fit, she passes. Through the one-on-one coaching journey, Patton serves as a weekly, unshakable stand for

22

her client’s goals. She not only serves strategy and powerful solutions, but she is also an accountability partner who gets results. “I call them to their greatness. You cannot be a mediocre leader and expect great results. You have to be a great leader to lead a great company,” she says. If clients are looking for more of an intensive and immersive experience, they can book the VIP threeday retreat at the Sanctuary, where together they will accomplish the most important three or four business goals or challenges, along with plenty of mind, body, and spirit rejuvenation. This program is for those willing to take Patton’s training to heart. “A coaching relationship is a very beautiful, confidential relationship. It is based on trust, on both sides. You cannot get the coach and not be willing to do the work,” she says. “What we need now is more great leaders, and that’s why I love what I do.” After 20 years, she feels like she is just getting started. Her 2023 is already filled with a TED Talk, team training and retreats, and amazing coaching clients. The best gratification for Patton is seeing her clients win in their leadership, their sales, and their culture. The bonus win is when clients realize they can start to give back in bigger ways. “When they say, ‘I can finally write that $100,000 check to a school or charity that I love because my business is doing so well,’ that’s a big win for their legacy and impact. I want people to have their own personal ripple effect” Patton says. “With every single client I work with, I feel blessed and honored that they would allow me to help them grow their business and their life.” DenaPatton.com

Side Dishes That Take Center Stage as Stars in Their Own Right

During most meals, entrees are the focus. Or, if someone has a sweet tooth that needs satiating, perhaps desserts are the most in demand. However, there are some side dishes that are so scrumptious that they are worthy of the spotlight, too. They may be referred to as “sides” or “for the table” shareables—but make no mistake, they will be the most talked-about dishes of the dining experience. The Crispy Brussels Sprouts ($12) at Geordie’s at Wrigley Mansion (WrigleyMansion.com) comes to mind. This savory, ultra-crispy showstopper is among chef Ressul Rassallat’s signature recipes of the past 10 years. The secret? In addition to a quick fry, the Brussels sprouts get tossed in a proprietary habanero agave glaze, and are topped with fresh Parmesan cheese and toasted sunflower seeds. Tarbell’s (Tarbells.com) also turns up the crunch to make crowds happy with its Crispy Chickpeas ($14). Acclaimed chef Mark Tarbell and his team use olive oil to enhance the crunch during the frying process. They then combine the chickpeas with fresh lemon juice and a dusting of grated Parmesan cheese, rosemary, parsley, and sea salt—resulting in a rustic, salty flavor beyond one’s wildest dreams. At Postino WineCafe (PostinoWineCafe.com), they take a mushroom and gave it crunch with their Maitake Mushroom ($15.50) shareable, which is an actual pinecone-shaped Maitake battered lightly and fried before being paired with earthy oyster and cremini mushrooms. The trio comes with a tangy, thick, and creamy labneh— which is essentially yogurt cheese—topped with lemon zest, smoked salt, and controne pepper for dipping. While it’s not made crispy, Zinqué (LeZinque.com) is also using produce to pack a flavorful punch with its shareable Ratatouille ($13). With robust tomato flavors, this unique take on the classic French side dish allows

32

C ULIN A RY C R E AT ION S | F OOD + BE VE RAGE

guests to properly enjoy fall’s bounty with Provençale roasted vegetables seasoned to perfection, and then piled high on Poilâne bread imported from Paris. Fall combined with France on a plate must have also been on the minds of Maple & Ash (MapleAndAsh.com) chefs as they were dreaming up dishes for the table, as well. Case in point: The Black Truffle Risotto ($21). This classic risotto is cooked slowly with a Parmesan broth and rich truffle butter before being finished with a decadent Madeira truffle jus and shaved Périgord black truffles sourced from southern France. At STK Steakhouse (STKSteakhouse.com), one of the most popular sides is all things creamy and dreamy just like the Maple Risotto, but cheesier. The ooey, gooey Mac & Cheese Trio ($42) features three versions of the comfort food classic, each in its own chic mini cast-iron skillet. The first is the most standard offering, made with a five-cheese blend, while the second boasts chopped smoked bacon, and the third is piled high with declawed lobster tail and chives. For those who like a meatier side, prepare your taste buds for the new Short Rib Empanadas ($5) available at ZuZu at Hotel Valley Ho (HotelValleyHo.com). Created by Argentinian Chef de Cuisine Alejo Candia, short ribs are first slowly braised with spices, then hand-shredded and mixed with onions, peppers, garlic, and scallions that are slow-melted in olive oil. The result is a deep-fried treat in a hand-folded empanada wrapper, available as an add-on to any meal and served with a classic chimichurri for dipping. Finally, tater tots at a top steakhouse? Oh, yes! The Smoked Gouda Tater Tots side ($15) at Ocean Prime (Ocean-Prime.com) is a combination of smoked gouda and cheddar cheeses with a dash of onion. They are hand-formed and coated in flour and spices before being fried until golden, which signals that the cheese has melted into the potato goodness.

Making Magic

One of the most beloved hallmarks of the holiday season, The Nutcracker’s fantastical tale of a girl’s dreamy journey to a mystical land on Christmas Eve has captured the hearts of generations worldwide. Tchaikovsky’s famous work highlights one of the most famous ballets in history as the story of Clara and her Nutcracker Prince is distinguished by its magical visuals and effortless perfection, ranging from the dancers to the larger-than-life characters to the special effects. The Nutcracker is a tradition many families know well—but there’s a whole other show behind the curtain to which they are not privy. And, it all starts about a month before opening night. “That month, everyone shifts gears. [That month] is used for choreography, costume fittings, and rehearsals,” says Mallory Porter, the director of marketing for Ballet Arizona. CONTINUED >

About 30 professional dancers plus an ensemble of 20 children—some students at The School of Ballet Arizona, who take on roles like the toy soldiers—prepare for the two-hour show. This year, 7,000-8,000 audience members are expected to attend performances, which run from Dec. 9-24 (BalletAZ.org). On performance days, dancers arrive early in the day and do a run-through. The makeup tends to take the longest, and it can take as long as 30 minutes for everyone to get into costumes. The most difficult? The Nutcracker and mice. “There are gloves with claws, a separate headpiece, and a lot of little pieces,” Porter says. But the large components also require attention. It takes five unseen people to push the 12-foot-tall Mother Ginger and her bon bons so they seemingly float effortlessly onto the stage. And the sleigh that Clara and her Nutcracker Prince ride in is powered by a mobility scooter, controlled by a technician lying on their stomach while driving it around the stage.

“This takes more than any of our other productions to put on,” Porter says. “There’s so much about The Nutcracker that has this sense of magic, you have to do it right.” Other facts that make the magic happen: • The Mouse King costume weighs 75 pounds—quite a load for the dancer to carry. • More than 7,000 pounds of dry ice are used during the entire production run. • More than 100,000 Austrian Swarovski crystals are incorporated to create the sparkle in the snow scene. • More than 100 pounds of flameproof paper create the falling snow. • The production utilizes 260 costumes—exponentially more than Ballet Arizona’s other shows, which range from two to 20. • Dancers use 250 pairs of pointe shoes during the production run. They get a new pair for each show, and the worn pairs are autographed and can be purchased for $20.

The City Lifestyle

Giving Campaign Now in its third year, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign will give away $300,000 this holiday season to help individual community members who would benefit from a helping hand during their time of need. But they need YOUR HELP to make it happen! Maybe you know of a single parent struggling to provide, an elderly person who has experienced loss, a child enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need—even if nobody else does. To preserve and protect the dignity of every recipient, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized in ANY way. (Even those who nominate others may remain anonymous if they choose.) Last year, City Lifestyle was able to give to more than 70 recipients all over the country by sending checks in the mail through New Year’s Eve. (This year, the goal is to double that number with checks ranging in amounts up to $3,000 each.) With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.” Together with Matthew Perry, Chief Sales Officer, Steven adds that the outpouring and gratitude from the recipients was overwhelming and affirmed that this is a tradition they want to continue. “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success,” Matthew adds, “so we in turn want to be a blessing to others.” City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep doing it on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is so rewarding that it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster that culture of generosity.”
