When I moved to the Valley from New York in the late 1990s, the food scene here was, well, interesting. New York was a foodie haven, with mom-and-pop locales everywhere, pizza joints on every corner, and all open almost all hours. Here, the food scene was ... different. At the time, everything seemed to close by 8 p.m., and after hunting for pizza, I finally came across one locale with a sign in its window that boasted, “We sell by the slice!” because just about no one else did yet in the Valley. True story. Fast-forward to today. James Beard Award winners? We’ve got them. Celebrity chefs? We’ve got them. Mom-and-pop locales? We’ve got them. A variety of cuisines? Yep, we’ve got those, too. In fact, when people ask me about my favorite restaurant in the Valley, I always pause. How is it possible to pick when there are so many amazing locales now? The Valley has truly evolved to be a culinary destination that’s known nationally, if not even internationally. And our drink scene? Just recently two local bars—Bitter & Twisted and Little Rituals—were named among the best in the country. As you can tell, this issue is our Food & Drink Issue. It’s one of my favorites each year, although I definitely get hungry writing and editing it! I hope you enjoy all the amazing creations we feature. We were also honored to speak with and photograph Rob and Patricia Schneider, whose movie Daddy Daughter Trip debuted at 17 Harkins Theatres throughout the Valley at the end of September. Read the article, and then go catch the movie. It was filmed all around Arizona, and I can guarantee you’ll recognize many of the locations! Have a great month, and I hope to see you dining out! letter from the PUBLISHER
I’m hungry ... As you may recall I am an Arizona native, having grown up in the heart of Scottsdale and Paradise Valley. As a kid, going out to eat as a family was always a treat. Some of my childhood staples include Bobby McGee’s, Ed Debevic’s, Farrell’s, and let’s not forget dessert at the Sugar Bowl, Yummy’s Yogurt, and Thrifty’s Ice Cream! I am sure for those from this area, these names stir up fond memories of what it was like here in the past … It really is incredible to see how in recent years the local dining environment has grown so much that it is now sought out by people from all over the country. Arizona has evolved into a destination for food and genuine culinary experiences. Today, we certainly have no shortage of places to expand our palate and try new things! This month’s issue is full of delicious eye candy that is sure to make you salivate. We also had a great time sitting with the fun-loving, witty, down-toEarth couple and Arizona residents Rob and Patricia Schneider. They shared with us the love for their new home in Arizona, as well as their experience filming the locally based movie Daddy Daughter Trip, which hit theaters on September 30. This is a light, funny, and charming film, which includes several Arizona landmarks you will recognize! We hope you enjoy this month’s issue—happy reading! Be grateful, be kind, and live well, Tammy Fellows Owner/Publisher

Rob & Patricia Schneider Their New Movie, Living in the Valley, and What They Didn’t Expect About Arizona
It’s a hot, muggy day in August when two of the Valley’s latest residents—Rob and Patricia Schneider—drive up to the photo studio where our team is waiting. The couple is ready for a day filled with laughs, outfit changes, a fire, and even getting soaking wet—which was actually their fun idea. To back up, the Schneiders moved from California to Arizona in 2020, and since that time, they’ve been very busy. Rob, the actor and comedian known for his turn on Saturday Night Live and movies such as The Waterboy, Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo, Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo, 50 First Dates, and The Hot Chick, recently produced, directed, and starred in the film Daddy Daughter Trip. Patricia, who has written and produced comedy sketches, as well as shows and movies, not only also produced the movie but also wrote the screenplay for it along with Jamie Lissow. A heart-warming family adventure/comedy, Daddy Daughter Trip is live-action mixed with animation and tells the story of a second-grader’s dream of a fun-filled spring break vacation her family can’t afford. (The second-grader is played by Rob & Patricia’s real-life daughter, Miranda Scarlett Schneider.) When daddy and daughter hit the road with just coins, what ensues is a road trip filled with misfortunate adventures. The vacation is saved when the duo meets a pair of well-connected travel bloggers. The movie was filmed around Arizona and recently debuted in the Valley at Harkins Theatre.

“I love all the characters I’ve played. In all honesty, you HAVE to love them if you are going to breathe life into them.”
The couple says that they had a great time filming locally and that they love living in Arizona—though they expected their new home to be all sunshine and great weather and not the crazy rain and monsoon storms we had been having almost daily in August. (Should we call it a plot twist?) So we went with that for our photos, too, and had a blast doing so. And yes, they really did get as wet as they look in the photo we included in this story! The photo studio also had an old blacksmith shop, and in honor of Arizona’s blacksmithing history, Rob took a try with the tools. After the shoot I was able to speak with the couple about the movie, living in the Valley, and what they love about each other. Rob, what first drew you to acting? Comedy was my first love. I was so thrilled to see movies with Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor, and then I saw Steve Martin perform live. And I kind of put it together that it was technically possible to become a comedic actor because somehow this hilarious gentleman figured it out! You’ve starred in so many movies … do you have any favorites? Or favorite roles? I love all the characters I’ve played. In all honesty, you HAVE to love them if you are going to breathe life into them. It may sound counterintuitive, but comedy has to be taken seriously for it to work at a high level. It has to make sense dramatically even if the scene is super silly. Sometimes we find ourselves in a scene where we know for sure it’s hilarious because you feel it in your bones! It’s rare but super fun when it happens. Your latest movie, Daddy Daughter Trip—which just hit theatres—also stars your daughter. And, Patricia, you wrote it! Patricia, can you tell us what inspired the story? We wanted to make a comedy film for the whole family right here in Arizona that would show lots of fun things to do and feature some of the state’s incredible scenery. What was it like to work with your daughter? Miranda had just barely turned 8, but we knew she was perfect for the role of the second-grader with
22

big dreams. We included her in the writing process. She came up with her character’s name, Meara, and we rehearsed the “looking at the stars” scene for months. When we got to the set, Miranda didn’t even need direction. She knew exactly where her character needed to be emotionally at all times. You filmed in a lot of locales around Arizona, and especially here in the Valley. For those who haven’t seen the movie yet, what are some fun places they can spot? Butterfly Wonderland, Bearazona, zip-lining in Flagstaff, Agritopia, Sedona, Scottsdale, Phoenix, and Tucson! Why is this movie special to you both? We love our new home, Arizona. So, in a way, Daddy Daughter Trip is our thank-you card to the people here for welcoming our family. Patricia, how did you get into writing movies? I always loved writing when I was young and jumped at every chance to be in any writing contest. After college, I was producing and writing comedy sketches for a television show. Then I wrote two seasons of our comedy show on Netf lix, and then started writing movies. Do you have a process when you write? Yes, sitting down between cooking for kids, and driving them to school and after-school activities. Once my brain is completely exhausted I no longer have the energy to doubt myself, so creativity just flows, hahaha. You have another movie out right now, as well … Amor es Amor is a romantic comedy for Mexico and Latin America. It has a lot of heart and good laughs. Rob, what are the top three things you love about Patricia? In 13 years, we have never gone a day without laughing. Patricia is an incredibly creative collaborator who makes really good choices for stories and comes up with the best physical comedy ideas. Paty is also the best mama in the world! CONTINUED >

Patricia, what are the top three things you love about Rob? He makes me laugh every day, he is a very kind person, and a wonderful dad. You moved from California to Scottsdale in 2020. Do you already have a list of favorite places around the Valley? We love so many restaurants in Scottsdale and Phoenix. Great gyms, yoga, and pilates. We did it! Any specific restaurants? True Food Kitchen, Eggstasy, Shake Shack, Preston’s, Mastro’s original, Mastro’s Ocean Club, Tocaya, Thai Basil, and That’s Amore Gelato! There is a new major film studio and production training facility that is going to be built next year in the Phoenix area. Can you see yourselves working with the

location here instead of going back to Los Angeles in the future for your own projects? We filmed here last year WITHOUT a studio. We are in development for our next film after we finish the international release of Daddy Daughter Trip. We want to build a studio here, as well. Any upcoming projects you can each share? Animated movie Leo for Netflix (December 2023); Amor es Amor for Paramount+ (spring 2023); Dead Wrong indie thriller (summer 2023); The Animal for Fox (summer 2024). Daddy Daughter Trip was all about taking a trip … where would you like to travel next? We are heading to Greece for our next big family vacation! Never been!

A Culinary Powerhouse FROM ESTABLISHED FAVORITES TO THEIR LATEST VENTURES, THE MAGGIORE FAMILY GOES AGAINST THE GRAIN AND FINDS SUCCESS
ARTICLE BY GEORGANN YARA PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF THE MAGGIORE GROUP
Going with the tried-and-true flow has never been in chef and restaurateur Joey Maggiore’s DNA. He’s got a revered pedigree with his father, the late Tomaso Maggiore—whose namesake Italian venue has been a beloved Phoenix destination for more than four decades—as his teacher and business partner. But, the mind behind Hash Kitchen has always had a bit of a rebellious streak, restaurant-concept-wise. “I was always the black sheep because I had these crazy ideas. My dad would say, ‘Would you just stay with what we know?’” Joey says with a hearty chuckle. “I’m one of those guys who has to change it.” The unorthodox thinking has paid off. Along with his wife Cristina, Joey helms the family empire The Maggiore Group, which has merged good food and service with out-of-the-box thinking and a social media presence that’s created a cult following for its thriving restaurants. The Maggiores will soon add to their restaurant family of 12 with two new additions: The Rosticceria and The Italiano, both slated for opening dates over the next few months. The Rosticceria beckons Italy’s side street vendors’ porchetta, Sicilian sausage, and Italian rubs, thanks to Arizona’s first Italian-style wood-fired grill and
rotisserie meats. Fun sides of mini-lasagna and polenta fries accompany a build-yourown gelato shake bar that will appeal to all ages, and offer both booze and booze-free options. Petite cannolis and Italian cookies are among the 50-ish accouterments. With a casual yet refined vibe, The Italiano conjures the original Tomaso’s authentic regional cuisine. It will offer a fresh take on a generational favorite, with interactive touches like a build-your-own antipasti cart that arrives tableside. This concept is a tribute to Tomaso himself. “All those tiring days in the kitchen, him yelling and showing me how to do food properly … this one is a kiss to him,” Joey says. Does such an ode come with additional pressure? “It’s more heartwarming. I’ve cooked this food my whole life and it’s exciting to bring that back. But it is a little nerve-wracking. So many people for 40 years went to my dad’s restaurant. I want them to come here and say it’s the same … or a little better,” Joey says. Since Joey, Cristina, and Tomaso formed The Maggiore Group in 2016, it has claimed an enviable slice of the Valley’s restaurant scene. It’s responsible for multiple locations of Hash Kitchen and The Sicilian Butcher (which always has an adjacent The Sicilian Baker), as well as The Mexicano, and Tomaso’s.

The Mexicano, the most recent spot, offers the same showstoppers with a BYO margarita bar, a 3-foot Machete quesadilla, and a Gaucamole & Salsa “Ferris Wheel.” “We always bring the build-your-own component. We like to be as fun and out-of-the-box as we can,” Joey says. And with its audacious build-your-own bloody Mary bar, Hash Kitchen started it all. Unabashedly flaunting more than 50 toppings, customers are enticed to play with their drink—and food. Think fried ravioli, meatballs, pickled eggs, and other jaw-dropping add-ons. However, its conception was a practical solution amid a quick transformation from their former restaurant Cuttlefish into the first Hash Kitchen. Unsure of what to do with the oyster bar, a bloody Mary bar was the spontaneous answer. This addition would end up putting them on every social media map as it was tailor-made for Instagram before “Instagrammable’’ was a thing. Joey credits Hash Kitchen with changing how his family does business in a competitive industry. “It gives customers something to talk about,” he says. “But never in our wildest dreams did we think it would end up like this.” It also showed the perks of not following every rule. “The loud music, drinking alcohol during the day … it was all the things you’re told, ‘No,’” Joey says. Joey produces the menus and recipes for all restaurants. The Sicilian Butcher’s dishes are family recipes executed in a fun craft meatball setting. The Sicilian Baker’s lineup of treats is made the way Joey was taught growing up. “This cooking we’ve been doing all our lives. It’s our heritage. It brings up memories of my grandma making pasta,” Joey says. And it’s not going unnoticed. A first-time Sicilian Baker customer who lives in Chicago but hails from Sicily ordered Cassatina, a Sicilian sponge cake with marzipan and cannoli cream that’s not common outside of Italy. She hadn’t had it since her grandmother’s back home and was overcome with joy. “She had tears in her eyes. It’s amazing that you can do that through food,” he says. Another vivid memory from his childhood explains why Joey does what he does. “When my dad made a dish and walked it to the table and those people’s eyes would light up … it’s the most amazing thing,” he says. “When you can make people do that, I think that’s what all chefs want.” MaggioreGroup.com

Did you know there are just three federally recognized American Viticultural Areas (AVAs) in all of Arizona? To put it in perspective, there are 18 AVAs in Oregon, 19 in Washington, and an eye-popping 139 in California. However, what we lack in quantity we make up for in quality, especially in Willcox. The Willcox AVA, which is located about three hours from the Valley, leads Arizona wine grape production by growing 74% of the state’s wine grapes, and is the source of the most highly rated Arizona wines by Wine Spectator, San Francisco Chronicle, Tastings.com, and The Arizona Republic. Still skeptical about Arizona wine? Why not make the drive down to Southern Arizona one weekend and sip, swirl, and swoon for yourself? Here are some of our favorite stops in the Willcox area.
KEELING SCHAEFER VINEYARDS For more than 20 years, Keeling Schaefer— Rod Keeling and Jan Schaefer to be exact—has led the surge in quality winemaking in Arizona. Almost all of their wines are single varietal, and all of the grapes are grown on just two vineyards. The team especially excels at Syrah, Petite Sirah, Grenache, Mourvedre, Viognier, and the little-known Picpoul Blanc. More popular in France, this white varietal has a crisp acidity and almost a pineapple essence. The bright and airy tasting room is located in the heart of Willcox in a refurbished building that was the Willcox Bank and Trust more than 100 years ago. An exceptionally cool bonus of visiting: The winery has a “share a glass” program with nearby Birds and Barrels, Carlson Creek, Coronado, Pillsbury, Golden Rule, Bodega Pierce, and Zarpara wineries, meaning you can bring a glass in from tasting at any of their locations for a discounted flight. KeelingSchaeferVineyards.com
CARLSON CREEK VINEYARDS Though it has a tasting room in Scottsdale and winery/tasting room in Cottonwood, Willcox is home to Carlson Creek’s actual vineyard property, which—at 280 acres—is one of the largest in the state, though it is still a family business made up of two brothers and their dad. It is also home to the flagship tasting room, which is just across the railroad tracks from Keeling, set behind an adorable white picket fence that—for those of a certain age—will offer a fun “Ozzie and Harriett”

photo moment. But, have no fear—it is anything but the 1950s once inside. The Carlson tasting room features chic, comfortable indoor and outdoor seating with an Italian-meets-American vibe, meant to make you feel as if you’re in one of the Carlson brothers’ homes. Their vineyard produces a variety of award-winning wines, including everything from Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, and Grenache Rosé to Syrah, Malbec, Mourvèdre, and Cabernet Sauvignon. The best bet is a flight, as well as a bottle of Rule of Three, if with a group. In 2009, they purchased land in the Willcox AVA and got to work, naming the vineyard Aridus, a play on the Latin word arid, as a tribute to their desert setting. The stylish cellar formally opened in 2012, and the tasting room nearby (nearly next door to Carlson, in fact) soon after. Both are open for tours and tastings, but the tasting room may be the most convenient as it is next door to Carlson Creek, so there’s no need for driving. Plus, the tasting room is super modern; with its cool combination of wood and steel inside, it gives a warm, industrial feeling that really sets the mood for an experience. The wine itself feels like a mix between New World and Old World, and the rosé is so tasty it

PILLSBURY WINE CO. Now, there is a fabulous Pillsbury tasting room located in Northern Arizona—in Cottonwood—but the actual vineyards, and a more intimate tasting room, are down south in Cochise County. Though only open on the weekends, the trip to taste is worth it. It’s a rustic property with a toasty fire burning in a Franklin stove on colder days. Guests are encouraged to bring a picnic lunch to pair with their wines, and there are tables and chairs scattered under the lovely pine and pecan trees on-site, all in full view of the actual vineyard, and picturesque mountain views as well. PillsburyWine.com Additional wineries in the area include Bodega Pierce, Coronado, Golden Rule, and Zarpara Vineyard.

Eat Your Way Through Autumn With Foods Infused With All Things 'Fall'
Autumn is upon us. Make it the most appetizing time of the year by indulging in dishes that celebrate the ingredients that evoke the unmistakable flavors of fall. Think creamy, rustic offerings, as well as root veggies, apples, spice, smoke, and—of course—sweets. Bourbon Steak at the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess (ScottsdalePrincess.com) aims to take guests’ taste buds for a ride—an autumnal hayride, to be exact—with its newly released and impeccably marbled Hay Smoked Ribeye ($185). It arrives tableside atop an actual pile of hay. Said hay is set ablaze in front of diners’ eyes so it may lightly smoke the crust of the meat. Once the fire is extinguished, the dish is butter-bathed with a rosemary sprig, sliced, and served with a variety of grilled vegetable kabobs. The Hearth-Roasted Heirloom Beets ($12) at etta (EttaRestaurant.com) uses the same concept—fire—but in a totally different way by toasting an assortment of Chioggia, ruby red, and golden beets over an open flame until smoked, and then topping them with whipped miso, gremolata, spiced Marcona almonds, and aged sherry vinegar. If seeking something a touch more indulgent, B&B Cocktail Lounge (BourbonAndBones.com) is dishing out Steak Au Gratin ($18) all season long. Elegantly rich and dreamily creamy, it starts with prime steak tips and a generous measure of Swiss gruyere before being accented with bell peppers, garlic, and oodles of freshly made savory cream. (Bonus—it is served in what looks like a miniature cauldron.) In addition, Maple & Ash (MapleAndAsh.com) now features a twist on creamed corn perfect for this time of year. Its Creamed Sweet Corn ($14) is a mix of sauteed corn and house-made corn puree that is finished off with cream, citrus, garlic, shallots, espelette peppers, and basil, as well as some crispies on top. For those who like a little heat with their cooler fall temperatures, Ling’s Wok Shop (LingsWok.shop) now features
Spicy Eggplant ($9). Each slice of the hearty fall favorite veggie is roasted until toasty brown, and then tossed with chili oil, sesame, and five spice to embody the warm spiced flavors of the season. Tarbell’s (Tarbells.com) is also celebrating fall’s harvest with its Celery Root and Apple Soup ($16). Credited as the game-changing dish when Mark Tarbell won Iron Chef America in 2007, this all-time guest favorite combines milk, celery root, roasted apples, onions, and potatoes. It is then garnished with apples, celery leaves, and a white cheddar cap that dissolves beautifully into the bowl and enhances its overall profile on the palate. Geordie’s at the Wrigley Mansion (WrigleyMansion. com) sought to showcase an autumnal fruit as well, albeit a lesser known one in the pomegranate. It is the not-sosecret ingredient in its newly launched New Zealand Lamb Rack ($45), as both reduced pomegranate and pomegranate molasses coat and season the meat. The sweet and slightly tart fruit is combined with Lebanese-inspired marinade, garlic, and peppers to make the lamb a warming and exotic take on comfort food. Nook Kitchen (NookKitchen.com) went the way of something warming, too, with its Espresso Rubbed Filet ($42). While most espresso is being used in pumpkin spice lattes this time of the year, Nook did manage to procure some, and it provides an earthy acidity to this 8 oz. filet, which is paired with blistered tri-color carrots, garlic rosemary marble potatoes, and a white truffle cream sauce. Finally, both warm and spicy, Cala Scottsdale (CalaScottsdale.com) recently introduced a Spiced Apple Baklava ($16) to its menu, which is crispy and nutty with golden layers of phyllo dough, cinnamon-candied walnuts, pistachios, powdered sugar, baked apples, and rum gelato.

INSPIRED BY NATURE, L’AUBERGE DE SEDONA OFFERS A STUNNING ESCAPE

T R AV E L J OU R N A L | TR AVE L
A SERENE GETAWAY Sedona is known for its serene, calming essence and stunning scenery. Soaring red rocks, towering trees, vortexes, and Oak Creek Canyon are hallmarks of this locale known for its soothing ways. And, nestled under a canopy of Sycamore trees and hugging the meandering Oak Creek, is L’Auberge de Sedona. As you approach the resort there’s a sign arching across the roadway, welcoming you as you enter the property. “L’Auberge de Sedona,” it reads. Cross under and you know you’ve arrived at this storied locale, where pampering abounds— luxurious accommodations, delicious food, a spa to melt your worries away—and it’s all set to the soundtrack of the soothing babble of Oak Creek and the beauty of the red mountains. There’s also a small beach area leading to the creek that boasts a hammock, and chairs are available just a short wade into the creek so you can sit and let the water serenely swirl around your ankles. In fact, the entire property is inspired by the area’s natural beauty and designed to allow its guests to embrace serenity and nature. There’s also a pool; fitness center; a variety of activities, including classes and stargazing (offered exclusively to guests); and the La Galerie art program provides a way for guests to experience Sedona’s art scene without leaving the property via onsite collections, an Artist-in-Residence program, and art events.

ACCOMMODATIONS There are several types of accommodations at L’Auberge. The Creekside Cottages are individual cottages that are set against the banks of the creek. Meanwhile, the Vista Cottages offer panoramic views of the red rocks. The Garden Cottages sit amidst koi ponds and meticulously maintained landscaping, and the Spa Cottages are along the garden path and offer special calming amenities. The locations offer a variety of extra touches such as private outdoor cedar showers, fireplaces, outdoor patios, and more, depending on your category choice. In addition to the individual accommodations, guests can also choose The Lodge, a two-story building with 19 rooms and two suites, which also acts as an art gallery and showcases renowned artists and features a fireplace and common area. And, The Creekhouse is an over-3,000-squarefoot, private five-bedroom home perfect for groups or a larger family. It features a great room, dining area, living room, deck, and more.
DINING One of the stars of the resort—which draws people in the Valley to drive up even just for a single meal—is its restaurant Cress on Oak Creek. While Cress offers an indoor space and a patio, it also offers tables alongside the creek. The intimate setting, topped by the stunning scenery, is rivaled only by the nationally recognized culinary team’s creations. The menu offers elevated
