My sister, Deborah, is one of the strongest women I know. She has an inner strength that I aspire to. She’s also always there for anyone, whenever they need someone or something. She’s the first to volunteer and the one who holds others up. Oh—and her smile lights up the room. She also gets me in that way that siblings do—my favorite times are when we get all giggly over shared memories or bond making new ones.

Q U I TA J A C K S O N CO-FOUNDER OF GREENDESERT.ORG Quita Jackson is passionate about sharing a lifestyle that “mimics nature and promotes zero waste.” A true believer in sustainable living, she practices what she preaches by building her own eco-friendly shipping container homes for her family, and documenting the process on her green lifestyle website, GreenDesert.org. A former Channel 15 news producer, she now has a new mission: “I want people to know how fulfilling this lifestyle can be to our entire society and how important this zero waste and sustainability message is. The more self-sufficient we are, the less many things happening around the world affect us. You don’t have to depend on others as much if you’re growing your own food, collecting your own water, and using the sun… This doesn’t mean everyone has to do everything; everyone simply has to do something to leave less of a carbon footprint.” In addition to sharing her own green lifestyle and journey, she also helps the community through ecofriendly projects like helping to build school gardens. “We can do so much more as a community,” she says. “I truly believe that just by living and sharing this self-sufficient lifestyle, we attack so many issues and face tomorrow’s problems today.”

LEAH HUSS OWNER/CO-FOUNDER HUSS BREWING CO.
Leah Huss, owner and co-founder of Huss Brewing Co., wants her brewery to be known for two things: amazing quality; true-to-style beers; and that without her dedicated staff, Huss Brewing Co. would be nothing. “My favorite thing about the craft beer industry is the closeness and camaraderie we share,” Huss says. Huss is a rare find in the brewing industry; it’s estimated that women represent around 23% of brewery owners and 8% of production staff. Along with her husband Jeff, she has owned Huss Brewing Co. since 2013. The company is now one of the state’s largest independent brewers, with a brewery/taproom in Tempe, a taproom in Uptown Phoenix, and a third location opening soon in Phoenix. “My husband I were both in the brewing industry when we found out we were having our daughter,” she explains. “We almost immediately started making plans for opening a brewery as a legacy for her.” An Arizona resident for 25 years, Huss and her brewery support a variety of local charitable causes. “A big part of our company culture is to support the causes and interests of our employees,” she says. These causes include sponsoring events for Leah Huss. Photo by Lyssa Van Cleave

ON HER NEW NETFLIX SERIES, MOTHERHOOD, AND WHY SHE’D BE THE PERFECT DINNER GUEST
OAKS, CALIFORNIA, WALKED INTO SAN FRANCISCO’S COW PALACE, STOOD IN FRONT OF SIMON COWELL, PAULA ABDUL, AND RANDY JACKSON, AND BELTED OUT A RENDITION OF BILLIE HOLIDAY’S “GOD BLESS THE CHILD” THAT WOULD MAKE EVEN THE JAZZ LEGEND PROUD. Less than two minutes later, as her vocal coach mom Peisha waited eagerly outside the room, Katharine McPhee had earned a “ticket to Hollywood.” American Idol Season 5 viewers watched as the young star made it all the way to the finals, bested only by Southern blues singer Taylor Hicks

and his “Soul Patrol.” But, if being a runner-up means five subsequent studio albums, acting stints in shows like NBC’s hit Smash and CBS’s Scorpion, and a lead role in Broadway’s Waitress, she’ll take it. Looking back today, McPhee’s Idol audition song choice was fitting, as she just welcomed her own first child with husband David Foster, the 16-time Grammy Award-winning composer and music producer who has served as musical director for Muhammad Ali’s Celebrity Fight Night Valley gala for close to 20 years. “I’ve always missed the Fight Night in Arizona for some reason,” McPhee says, adding that she hopes to attend one day. But right now, her attention is on Rennie David Foster, the son she and Foster welcomed in February. The new mom is also trying her hand at comedy, starring opposite Eddie Cibrian in the Netflix series Country Comfort, which began streaming on March 19. “I’m terrible at telling jokes, so this is the perfect job for me,” she laughs. BACK STAGE (CONTINUED) McPhee plays Bailey, an aspiring country singer who manages to lose her boyfriend (she gets dumped) and her band in the same night (cue the country song), only to end up getting a job as a nanny for a newly-widowed Cibrian and his five children. Throw in Cibrian’s jealous on-screen girlfriend, and some comical crush-inspired advances from the young boys in the house, and Bailey’s got her hands full. It doesn’t help that she has zero experience with kids (she got the nanny gig after her car broke down), resulting in some unorthodox and questionable babysitting decisions. “The only way I get laughs from my friends and family is me just being silly,” she says, “which is probably why I got this job. Bailey is pretty silly and pretty hysterical.” McPhee recently zoomed with her co-star to talk about their new 10-part series. “Would YOU hire a nanny that looked like you?” we ask.

Cibrian laughs. “That’s the most fun question I’ve gotten the whole day!” McPhee exclaims. “You sound like my girlfriend on the show!” Cibrian chimes in. “She feels the exact same way.” “She does feel the same way,” McPhee says, laughing. “Well, I would probably be a little suspect of some of the outfits that Bailey’s wearing early on…” she smiles, “but as you notice, by episode five, six, and seven, the clothes get a little looser and a little baggier, because I was ‘with child’… so she’s not quite as, you know, ‘cute’ coming from my perspective… coming from the pregnant woman’s perspective.” The actress and singer has already taken to Instagram, proud of her post-pregnancy body, even appearing in a swimsuit designed by Sara Foster, one of her five step-daughters. McPhee met her husband during that life-changing season on American Idol, when the music legend served as a coach to some of the contestants. The two stayed friends. Years later, Foster proposed during a romantic getaway in Italy, and the two exchanged vows in a London church in 2019. McPhee gushes, “It’s been fun. My husband has been in the business for a long time. Tackling things with him as a couple has been really exciting and eye-opening. He has a lot of wisdom. We were friends for a long time, so I got to see him on a professional level without us being a couple. I’ve learned a lot from him.”

McPhee admits that when it comes to mothering, she had a great role model—her own mother. “My mom is really savvy and has given me a lot of good advice over the years. I kind of look back at the beginning of my career and think, ‘I should have had my mom manage me, a true mom-ager. She’s got really good instincts and she’s usually right!” While her newborn son may be too young to enjoy his mother’s many accomplishments, McPhee is excited to one day share some of her favorite films and TV shows with him. “Singing in the Rain, White Christmas, a lot of things with Gene Kelly,” she says. “The Sound of Music, which is funny, because our show happens to be a little spin, a little country version of The Sound of Music.” Speaking of music, Cibrian’s wife, country superstar LeAnn Rimes, makes a guest appearance on her husband’s show, playing herself in an episode and surprising one of his on-screen daughters with a private at-home performance. So, what would it take to convince McPhee to shelve diaper duty to be the guest headliner in someone’s living room? “Oh, that’s easy. That’s an easy one. Especially with the guy I live with. to television shows to big-budget films. Wenger remembers the first time, about 15 years ago, when she realized women’s needs weren’t being met by the undergarment industry. “I was assisting a big deal costume designer,” she relates. “We were making these beautiful costumes and she asked me to go buy new bras for all of the talent.” Wenger decided it was a stupid assignment, but off she went to the store to buy bras. She bought what she could and returned to work. “I had all the right bras in the right sizes, and in walks this dance troupe from Africa,” Wenger remembers. “Every bra in my hand was beige. It was not their skin color, so it was not nude. I couldn’t believe the product didn’t exist and that women were so misrepresented in the industry. It was at that moment that I knew I wanted to change things.” But a fashion company takes years to make connections and obtain financing.

“I didn’t have the ability at the time,” says Wenger. “But I knew that I could be an ally and be a catalyst for change.” A few years later, while working on Dancing with the Stars, she realized how to make the idea work. “Those outfits have to be danceable. You can’t have a nip slip or anything bad happen to your costume because it’s live on national television.” To prevent disasters, they use a power mesh fabric and custom-dye it to match each person’s skin tone, building the costumes on that fabric. “I realized I had this fabric that can fit anybody, and it can fit any skin tone. It’s super comfortable. That [mesh fabric] is the main component of our bra.” The mesh allows for both comfort and nude undergarments for any skin tone. Wenger compares forcing women to wear an underwire with trying to force a square peg into a round hole. “It’s not the shape of a woman’s body.” But having the concept was just the beginning. home by duct taping the car together. And then the

One semester into college, Griffin bought a ticket to visit a friend in Miami and canceled her return home at the end of the first week. “I spent the next year-and-a-half working two jobs, one of which was running a VIP room in a South Beach bar,” laughs Griffin. “Man! I could write a book on the crazy things I saw and participated in for that year-and-a-half.” What the experience did was make Griffin understand the importance of education. After two years of junior college in California, she transferred to Arizona State University (ASU). At ASU, she met her best friend, Eric.
“I’m grateful every day for the journey that brought me to this point in my life,” explains Griffin. But it wasn’t always easy. “I spent a decade in corporate medical sales,” she recalls. “Then I had a new business start and fail, and went back to corporate life. I was longing for a deeper connection to my purpose.” Griffin says she knew she wasn’t the only one looking for this.

Working to help women feel more empowered became a focus for Griffin. Her world shifted again when she and her husband joined APEX Motor Club. “My husband has always loved cars and I thought the idea sounded fun, although very intimidating.” After taking a two-day introductory course for those with little-to-no driving experience, Griffin says she realized she needed to figure out how to get out of her own way.
“I’m more present for just one thing at a time instead of trying to do a million things at once.” Griffin says racing helps her stay positive. “On the track, I’m talking myself up and telling myself I can do it instead of cutting myself down. Off the track, I get to feel what it’s like to compliment myself and hold space for the woman I am.” Griffin is creating a docuseries about learning to race in the middle of her life.
