START REPEATING IN OUR HEADS... “There’s no place like home.” What does this famous phrase really mean, and what do those magical slippers symbolize? For many, “home” it is a sense of comfort, family, familiarity, love, and a safe haven. It has been said that the slippers represent the ability to triumph over powerful forces. Wow! Is it me, or do you see some major symbolism to the times we are living in today?

Amas is a nonprofit, 50-year-old, multiethnic theatrical organization in New York, founded to create more diversity in the American theatre. “We a re desig ners. Ou r wheel house is doi ng

HALEY TEW GREW UP IN A SMALL MIDWESTERN TOWN OF 3,000, WHERE THERE WERE NO LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTS. A craving for the big city and sunshine brought her to Arizona. At Arizona State University, an interior design professor recognized Tew’s interest in designing outdoor spaces, and helped her develop an interdisciplinary degree in landscape architecture and interior design.

“If you can sell rocks, you can sell just about anything,” she says, laughing. Tew eventually went to work for a local design-build firm, Creative Environments. “I learned everything I could about design-build from a residential point of view. I was soon managing projects independently.” During this time, she married and became the mom to four little

Professional from the U.S. Green Building Council. And then the recession hit. There was little demand for landscape architects, so Tew went to work for two years selling landscape rocks. “I had never sold a thing in my life and sales terrified me,” she recalls. The job taught her how to sell, but mostly how to build personal relationships with customers.

Her husband Tyler, a commercial airline pilot, supported her decision. “I had a condo that I kept as a rental property,” she says. “I sold the condo and started Lavender Landscape in May 2019.” She received her registration of contractors license as both a designer and contractor. “I did everything except the labor right out of the gate.” She laughs, thinking about those first months.

crew do the work on the weekends.”

Tew could relate to that.

Lavender Landscape grew quickly, but that original crew remains with her today. “The key to building a company is all about the relationships with the people doing the hard work,” she explains. She went on to hire a team of designers and a second crew. Lavender grew steadily throughout 2019. Tew focused on keeping her client list small. “In the mass production space, you have to work with every home buyer that comes through the door. I wanted to eliminate that and to serve the clients I chose well.” Again, she knew the key was always in the relationships. 20

Paradise Valley Lifestyle | March 2021

“As a mom of four, my favorite times are in the backyard, messing around with the kids,” she says. Pre-pandemic, clients often felt driven by impressing others. Tew says that’s changed. “People are just wanting to connect,” she explains. “People want to have group activities that actually mean something. They want spaces to enjoy.” She says this has been the driving force in recent trends. Clients used what would have been vacation money to create a great outdoor living space. “I had so many people saying, ‘We want to do the spa. Go ahead and add the slide.’ It is all very family-focused.”

A modern farmhouse feel is popular. “They want the picket fence. Lush green areas. Wood. Black. White. Weathered brick. Green without tons of colors. White florals are popular.” She says everyone wants an edible garden, and suddenly creative pools are in demand. As a boutique firm, Lavender Landscape gives every client the proper attention. “We get in there during the design and live in your space before you do.” Tew says they consider everything—the lighting, cooling down a structure, creating spaces that speak to the family. “We are designers. Our wheelhouse is doing things your landscaper can’t do. When you hire us, it is a

That process requires a lot of energy and production time, resulting in a design presentation Tew describes as wow. “Your property deserves our attention,” she says, explaining why they charge a design fee. “We will design it out and you can take the design and bid it out for construction. But, when we do the construction, we refund the design fee. “We love our clients sending pictures of their families enjoying the spaces we’ve designed for them. It’s not about getting design accolades,” Tew explains, despite the fact that they have those, as well. “It’s about facilitating the enjoyment of your life outdoors.” LavenderLandscape.com

AWARD-WINNING CHEF CHRISTOPHER GROSS ON THE NEW CHRISTOPHER’S AT WRIGLEY MANSION

WHAT WAS ONCE A TRIANGULAR PATIO THAT JUTTED OUT FROM THE HISTORIC WRIGLEY MANSION—THE HOME PERCHED ATOP A HILL AND BUILT IN 1932 BY CHEWING GUM PERSONALITY WILLIAM WRIGLEY JR.—IS NOW THE EXQUISITE SETTING FOR THE NEWEST RESTAURANT AT THE LOCATION: CHRISTOPHER’S AT WRIGLEY MANSION. The renovated and reimagined space includes floor-to-ceiling windows—showcasing what may arguably be some of the best views in the Valley—as well as a glass roof that opens to reveal the twinkling stars overhead. There’s a custom-built wood fire oven and grill where chefs can cook in front of guests, and Arcosanti artisan-created Soleri Bells fashioned to be domes that will cover plates. Local artist Christiane Barbato from Blue Door Ceramics created custom plates and chargers that feature Chef Christopher Gross’s custom artwork, and a version of Blue Galaxy by Rotraut Klein-Moquay hangs in the restaurant (another version of it the painting is currently featured at Phoenix Art Museum). One of Chef’s favorite images, Leap Into the Void by Yves Klein, also hangs from a wall.

EXQUISITE FOOD & STUNNING VIEWS (CONTINUED)

“I joke that I’m trying to put everything in here that I think the guests would want to see. We have the best of everything that would give our guests a wonderful experience, and they won’t even need me now,” says the James Beard Awardwinning Chef Christopher, an Americanborn, Parisian-trained chef who has won numerous awards, cooked for numerous U.S. presidents, and worked with the famed chef Julia Child. Of course, though guests may be coming for the location, they will also most certainly be coming to taste the renowned chef’s creations. Christopher’s

boasts three concepts in one. The first, which will be available five nights a week, will feature an eight-course tasting menu. While creating an online reservation, guests will be taken through a process where they can indicate allergies or items they prefer not to be included in their meal. Two nights a week will showcase Christopher’s Classics. Those nights will have a limited, a la carte menu with four appetizers, four main courses, and two desserts only. Each item featured will be one of Chef Christopher’s iconic creations, and will be presented with a brief history of the dish. Last is the bistro, open for lunch, which will feature dishes created on the wood fire oven and grill. Opening this month, Christopher’s will first feature the tasting menu, with the other two concepts to open shortly thereafter. “I’m always looking for the best ingredients, respecting the product and the balance of flavors, and the presentation,” Chef Christopher says. “It’s all about the food, properly preparing it, and supporting local purveyors whenever possible.”

T COULD BE THE SOFT, COZY FEEL OF AN ALPACA THROW.

Or, the glimpse of a sand pattern on a water’s edge. And, even the sight of written poetic prose. When it comes to inspiration, IMI Design Founder, CEO, and Principal Anita Lang utilizes all of her senses to create the custom environments that have become the signature of the award-winning interior designer. “It all becomes part of the ingredients for the unique solutions for each client’s space,” says Lang, whose talents are manifested in luxurious residences, golf clubs, and spas.

“I am motivated by the fact that we all are influenced by the spaces we inhabit.” Her services in the luxury residential niche have been in such demand that Lang features a division that caters to real estate developers selling multimillion-dollar residences. Lang and her team’s expertise has attracted an elite clientele craving a home sweet home that exudes a lavish lifestyle and beautiful design in a warm and livable space that also reflects the style of the client. The goal: Create luxury interiors that elevate the human spirit. “I am motivated by the fact that we all are influenced by the spaces we inhabit. Good design with the correct materials, textures, proportions, etc. will evoke positive feelings in those we serve,” Lang says. “There is great intention behind the work I do.” Born in Chicago, Lang was raised in Maine and moved to Arizona around the same time she started IMI, in 1992. Hailing from a family

of entrepreneurs, she had a momentary stint at a design studio before launching her own firm. “Growing up with a family of entrepreneurs, I just thought it is what one does. So I hung up my shingle as a baby designer and learned every hard lesson along the way,” Lang says. “You don’t forget a lesson when you are the one paying to fix it!” A fast learner, Lang used her skills to follow her calling in interior design. It’s so natural for her that Lang doesn’t recall a specific moment when the passion for this innate talent struck.

LOCAL’S CHOICE (CONTINUED) “It is always the way my mind has been geared, I think, spatially. My mind takes interiors and works them like a Rubik’s cube. It is something that I have born to do all my life, and have been lucky to hone this gift into a discipline that serves others,” Lang says. She was able to grow her one-woman firm from a 400-square-foot shared studio to a full staff, her own headquarters in the heart of Old Town, and “dream come true” projects. After years of designing custom furniture for clients, Lang launched Design 528, her innovative modern line that unites details like sustainable wood harvesting, hand craftsmanship, and fine metal and textiles. While Lang works in an exclusive category of high-end living, it’s clear what drives her and what is dear to her heart. She talks about a current project, designing a Los Angeles home for a newlywed couple wanting to start a family. “Creating spaces for families does give me a lot of joy, as it becomes this warm, loving background where memories shall be made,” Lang says. “I feel blessed for the wonderful journey my career has taken me.” IMIDesignStudio.com
