little extra affection. That being said, I would like to introduce the group of handsome Valentines in my life (pup included) in the family photo above. As the only female in the house, I am fortunate enough to spread unending love to all of my boys! Love stretches beyond the people and creatures we live and play with and into the things we find passion for. In this issue of Paradise Valley Lifestyle, we are focusing on the Arts and Makers in our community. We touch on those who find passion in the things they create. In this issue, you will find some amazing and inspiring stories about local artists, including one who gives back and teaches students to grasp their creative aspirations. Another draws on the West for inspiration. Hear from a local rock band that

ARTIST’S PALETTE "Crossing Over" Yellowstone Buffalo

Local Artist Marless Fellows

Draws Inspiration from the West ARTICLE STACI HAUK | PHOTOGRAPHY WHITNEY DINOTA

MARLESS FELLOWS FEELS HER JOURNEY TO BECOMING A WELLKNOWN LOCAL ARTIST WAS A SLOW AND STEADY PROCESS. "My initial inspiration came from childhood. I would watch my father draw elephants, and I thought it was amazing. They were cartoon-like, and I always wished he had nurtured that gift." Marless recalls that her father being a cowboy not only inspired her doodles in school but also tapped into her creativity, long-term. In her 30s, her husband’s grandfather visited, and being an artist himself, he helped her find an outlet through art. "He helped me cultivate my artistic abilities." After five years and classes focused on the many facets of art, Marless started to find out about farmers markets and art shows. She started doing larger shows and truly grew as an artist. "Art is therapy to me. I get lost in it," she says. Marless now teaches private lessons and courses for art gallery Ciolim. "I had been showing for a number of years at my previous studio and at the Arizona Fine Art Expo which I still participate in and love." The Expo allows her to feel inspired by other artists and build deeper connections with clients. She loves to share her journey with others, as well as the process of being an artist. "I primarily paint in a Western look and feel, as that was my heritage. I was a barrel racer as a young child and love that lifestyle. My husband is from Montana, and I have evolved in my painting by pulling additional inspiration from our visits there." Marless' best advice is that artists put together a notebook of inspirations, pictures and photos. "When it’s filled, you start seeing patterns within yourself. You change and grow and evolve in what you collect, and that's the exciting part."

"Seeking Wisdom" The life of the Cowboy endures blessings and hardships 16

USES HIS VAST KNOWLEDGE TO HELP OTHERS ON THEIR ARTISTIC JOURNEYS

ARTICLE STACI HAUK | PHOTOGRAPHY WHITNEY DINOTA

18

Paradise Valley Lifestyle | February 2019

ARTIST RICHARD RETTER HAS COUPLED HIS PASSION FOR ART WITH A YEARNING TO HELP THOSE IN NEED TO PUT FORTH A PHILANTHROPIC PROJECT THAT COMBINES BOTH. “In 1993 I worked with Scottsdale Foundation for the Handicapped. The program’s director decided to make the art program a curriculum, so I started DRAW TOGETHER. We had many corporate individuals donate specifically to this program because they loved the work my students were creating and wanted to purchase the pieces,” Richard says. In 2013 Richard wanted to branch out on his own. He began UNITED ART OF ARIZONA, an art program for adults who are artistic and special. It offers instruction that is highly productive and results-driven where artists learn the process of creating artwork from start to finish, as well as how to display and sell their art. Another piece of the charitable puzzle for Richard began in 2014. “Kit Kough, program director at Mayo Clinic Center for Humanities and Medicine, made me the resident artist at the Mayo Clinic. This program allows me to work with patients, bringing them art in lieu of physical therapy. Patients have taken to the program, as they see I’ve created an environment where they can express their feelings,” Richard says. “It starts with Richards’s own art, which is so engaging. One of my favorite installs we did is a painting with an array of lines, color and activity. Without knowing the title, a volunteer said she ‘wanted to take the yellow roads.’ Sure enough, the painting is called ‘The Journey.’ That’s so telling of his work and how it engages people. We are really blessed with great culture at Mayo, and art was a seamless addition to our programs,” Kit says.

Mirroring this view is Director for the Office of Community and Business Relations at Mayo Clinic Marion Kelly, who was reacquainted with Richard after not seeing him since their college days in Kentucky. “I was blown away by his art. I told him we have a huge center for humanities at Mayo, and I wanted him on-site. I also showcase much of his art in my own home. When you get to know him, you realize there are stories in him. He isn’t just painting a photo or scene, he’s telling a story.” Richard’s background has led him to the success he has today and also to his kindhearted efforts in the community. His parents encouraged his dreams from their home in the Kentucky projects. When they finally moved to the suburbs, Richard’s fifth-grade teacher motivated him to enter an art contest that led to national accolades. He continued to evolve in his work through clothing design, creating winning pageant outfits, being represented in fashion fairs for Ebony magazine, and designing for socialites. “I was always fascinated by his artistic abilities. I produced his fashion shows, and as a model, I felt his work rivaled some of the greats. His fashion work equaled his artistic work,” says James Williams, a childhood friend of Richard's. Now a resident of Arizona, Richard says it feels surreal sometimes, but his journey has led him to personal success and the ability to encourage others. “I have seen the impact Richard’s work has on the lives of his students. His patience and dedication and their growth as artists and individuals are incredible," says business associate Richard Onsager. "Through their art and his instruction, they feel empowered. It gives them a sense of accomplishment and the knowledge

Local Band the FLIPPIN' SWITCHES Hopes to Bring Out the Rock Star in All of Us

24

Paradise Valley Lifestyle | February 2019

ARTICLE STACI HAUK | PHOTOGRAPHY WHITNEY DINOTA

MUCH LIKE SUPERHEROES, THE FLIPPIN' SWITCHES HAVE CAREERS BY DAY AND TURN INTO THEIR ROCK STAR ALTER EGOS AT NIGHT. Guitarist Matt Abrams, singer Daniel Dobson, bassist Scott Holtzman and drummer Jeff Siegel have played in various bands throughout the years, but are each professionals who have a passion for music and enjoy music as a hobby. Matt is even a contributing writer for MusicPlayers.com. They share a joy for music which has led to playing for several local charity shows, birthdays, work events and even at the Skeptical Chymist in Scottsdale. "We bring a great crowd of people who know how to have a good time," they said. Matt and Jeff have a years-long friendship since working together as doctors at HonorHealth. "We knew we were both musicians and got to talking one day about seven years ago. Our singer, Dan Dobson, is brothers with one of Matt’s friends, and we happened to be looking for a new singer. Our former bass player took a job out of state, and when we were looking for a new bassist, we reached out to Jeff’s childhood friend from St. Louis, Scott Holtzman. Over time we became a foursome, and the rest is history. We are all pretty easygoing and just enjoy being friends," they said. The Flippin' Switches say their biggest struggle comes down to the fact that they all have busy careers and finding time to get together to practice can be a challenge. It requires much independent work so that when the group time is available they can fine-tune songs. The focus has always been on fun and making others happy, so that has made it easier to bring their "A" game to the stage. Another way the band finds simple joy and importance in their performances is through charitable contributions during their shows. The band plays at charitable events often and donates any covers collected to local charities. "People are taking time out of their busy lives to have a good time, and we are there to help make that happen." The band has set high goals for themselves with a new year beginning, including a gain in notoriety and branching out to play different events, as well as work on additional original material. They currently feature two original pieces in their sets but have more they are excited to include in upcoming shows. Those wanting to come see the Flippin' Switches live should visit the band on Facebook, Facebook.com/TheFlippinSwitches, or on their website, TheFlippinSwitches.com.

THE SICILIAN BUTCHER COMBINES SKILLED BUTCHERY AND CREATIVE DISHES ALL SET IN A MODERN-CASUAL RESTAURANT. The choose-your-own-meatball and build-your-own charcuterie board experience is unlike anywhere else. The hand-rolled meatballs and saucy attitude pair well with fresh-made pastas and Italian butcher-style meats. Located in Phoenix at 15530 N. Tatum Blvd. Suite 160, this unique experience is perfectly paired with a drink that was recently named "World's Largest." “The Negroni is my favorite cocktail,” says Joey Maggiore, owner of the Sicilian Butcher. “There is no place better than the Sicilian Butcher to hold this GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS title.”

Sheldon Wiley is the director of Beverage at the Maggiore Group, which owns the Sicilian Butcher. He currently holds three GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS. "I live my life without limiting beliefs. I push myself in order to not only grow as a person but quite simply to live my life to the fullest. I never want to be the person on the couch admiring other people’s accomplishments, but I would prefer to BE the inspiration," Sheldon says.

our food, Sheldon is here to make the best cocktails. The Negroni is my favorite cocktail, and Sheldon makes the best Negroni outside of Florence, Italy. We feel Sheldon makes the Negroni so good they may change the name to ‘the Sheldon.’ We now have our Negroni on the map!" A GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS adjudicator was on hand to witness Sheldon the day of the contest. Sheldon filled an oak barrel with 14 cases each of Carpano, Malfy Gin Originale and Campari. Once the drink was made, guests had the chance to purchase a Negroni tapped straight from the barrel for $5 each. A portion of the proceeds from each drink sold went to the Pearce Family Foundation, a local nonprofit committed to financially supporting bills at the home for families who have a child suffering from a chronic or life-threatening illness as they get back on their feet. “This was the most challenging GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS title I’ve ever done,” Sheldon says. “It really could not have been possible without the help of my team at the Sicilian Butcher and our partners, Carpano Antica Formula, Malfy Gin Originale and Campari.” The Sicilian Butcher is unlike anything on the market today—a full-service restaurant where you can build your own creations. "The recipes are a mixture of my own as well as my father, Tomaso Maggiore," Joey says. He suggests the Mafalde pasta dish to accompany your Negroni.

How to extend the life of your aging AC unit

I can’t stress enough that simple annual preventative maintenance is the one thing you can do that will add extra years of life to your AC unit and prevent breakdowns. That is why I created the “Complete Tune Up” years ago providing everything to keep a system in optimal shape for performance and longevity. It is over $680 worth of parts and physical work on your system for just $159.95. If your unit is old and problematic, you really should take some time to prepare so you don’t have the panic that comes with an unexpected new AC unit purchase. This gives you time to prepare and know what your options are. Here are things you should expect to see to insure you are getting the best information and pricing. Newer units are made with higher efficiency and capacity, however, the BTU output which is the required amount to effectively cool the square footage in your home, has changed. In order to give the accurate BTU and tonnage requirement, a Heat Load Calc, also referred to as a Manual J Load Calc, should be done. It takes into account the home’s square footage, location and number of windows and doors relative to sun exposure, and ceiling heights along with how much insulation is in your attic. It gives you the most accurate unit size needed. If you buy an AC unit slightly undersized, it will run all the time and there goes the efficiency you wanted from your new unit. If it is oversized, it will short cycle and not run long enough which puts immense wear on the unit. You should expect a contractor to spend a good hour or more in your home looking at these things before they provide you an estimate. If they just tell you here is what you have so here is what you need, keep shopping. Next is the issue of pricing. Most units unfortunately have their final meltdown during the summer’s extreme heat. So you are pressed to make some fast decisions in order to bring cool comfort back to your home. Unfortunately, some contractors will take advantage of that weak point and offer higher than normal or even gouged pricing. The average new unit replacement should run between $6,000 and $8,000. If you are getting some crazy high estimates, keep shopping. When shopping, one factor that determines price is the energy efficiency or SEER Rating. Today’s minimum is a 14 SEER which is probably double what your older unit is putting out. That makes for a nice savings come utility bill time. Units can go up to 20 or 22 SEER but the high cost does not really payoff in long term energy savings. A 16 SEER unit is probably your best value and return on investment. I wanted to extend a big Thank You to Mike and Kat McMahon from PV Lifestyle Magazine for making the Precision Decision on your 2 new AC units and being a valued customer with us!
