NINTH ANNUAL CULINARY EVENT RAISES $278,000 FOR ALS On June 2, the ALS Association Arizona Chapter hosted Bite Nite to benefit the families and patients living with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. Every year the Arizona chapter serves more than 400 patients. The annual event raised a record amount of $278,000 that will go toward patient and family services, community outreach, medical equipment and to help support the newly established Living with ALS program to help patients live their lives to the fullest. “The ALS Association is the only national nonprofit solely devoted to raising awareness and funds for ALS,” said Taryn Norley, executive director of the ALS Association Arizona Chapter. TWENTY YEARS AGO, KATHY AND PAUL DONALDSON AND THEIR FRIENDS BEGAN DOING A GOOD DEED A DAY AS A TRIBUTE TO KATHY’S SISTER, PATTY NERONI, WHO DIED OF CANCER AT THE AGE OF 34. It was Patty’s dying wish, and that one good deed a day has turned into a multitude of great deeds for thousands of foster children in the Department of Child Safety system. The saying “It takes a village to raise a child” is basically what Arizona Helping Hands relies on. They count on the help of volunteers and the community donations. And, like a revolving door, the need is never-ending.

Yes, things do fall into place when there’s a need. The help comes through support and donations. Individuals and organizations come in and assist with their time and generous financial gifts. was initiated. The following month, generous supporters made a huge impact with their donations, which was the engine that fueled the organization’s growth. A married couple can give $1,000 each year, and single people can give $500 and get every dollar back as a credit on their Arizona income tax return. Last year, Arizona Helping Hands received $1.5 million in donations through this program. GROWING WITH THE NEED Arizona Helping Hands has outgrown its present location in the Scottsdale Airpark. Through the

wonderful support of the Diane and Bruce Halle Foundation, the Foster Care Resource Center is targeted to open for service to families this fall. This new 18,000-squarefoot facility is more than double the existing space, providing more offices and a much larger warehouse area to house all the products in one location. Here they’ll be able to partner with other charities that are committed to helping a child in need. “We’re excited about the new facility. As we move forward, Arizona Helping Hands will be able to continue touching countless lives in a very important way,” Dan says. WAYS TO HELP + Financial support is always needed, whether it’s a one-time tax credit gift, a monthly contribution or a contribution to the building fund that is going on right now for the completion of the new facility. How to extend the life of your aging AC unit

I can’t stress enough that simple annual preventative maintenance is the one thing you can do that will add extra years of life to your AC unit and prevent breakdowns. That is why I created the “Complete Tune Up” years ago providing everything to keep a system in optimal shape for performance and longevity. It is over $680 worth of parts and physical work on your system for just $159.95. If your unit is old and problematic, you really should take some time to prepare so you don’t have the panic that comes with an unexpected new AC unit purchase. This gives you time to prepare and know what your options are. Here are things you should expect to see to insure you are getting the best information and pricing. Newer units are made with higher efficiency and capacity, however, the BTU output which is the required amount to effectively cool the square footage in your home, has changed. In order to give the accurate BTU and tonnage requirement, a Heat Load Calc, also referred to as a Manual J Load Calc, should be done. It takes into account the home’s square footage, location and number of windows and doors relative to sun exposure, and ceiling heights along with how much insulation is in your attic. It gives you the most accurate unit size needed. If you buy an AC unit slightly undersized, it will run all the time and there goes the efficiency you wanted from your new unit. If it is oversized, it will short cycle and not run long enough which puts immense wear on the unit. You should expect a contractor to spend a good hour or more in your home looking at these things before they provide you an estimate. If they just tell you here is what you have so here is what you need, keep shopping. Next is the issue of pricing. Most units unfortunately have their final meltdown during the summer’s extreme heat. So you are pressed to make some fast decisions in order to bring cool comfort back to your home. Unfortunately, some contractors will take advantage of that weak point and offer higher than normal or even gouged pricing. The average new unit replacement should run between $6,000 and $8,000. If you are getting some crazy high estimates, keep shopping. When shopping, one factor that determines price is the energy efficiency or SEER Rating. Today’s minimum is a 14 SEER which is probably double what your older unit is putting out. That makes for a nice savings come utility bill time. Units can go up to 20 or 22 SEER but the high cost does not really payoff in long term energy savings. A 16 SEER unit is probably your best value and return on investment. Meet Leanna Taylor + Her Former Foster, Spicoli The executive director of the Arizona Pet Project discusses her dedication to making a difference in the lives of pets and their owners.

TELL US ABOUT THE ARIZONA PET PROJECT. We were originally formed in 2001 as Friends of Animal Care & Control, the fundraising arm for Maricopa County Animal Care & Control. Then in 2005 we saw more than 105,000 animals brought to Maricopa County shelters and nearly 60,000 of them euthanized. That’s when we decided to take a more proactive approach and became a shelter prevention organization focused on free community spay and neuter. In 2016, we expanded to include our S.I.T. Stay program, where our shelter intervention team helps pets stay with their families. Simultaneously, we rebranded from Friends of Animal Care & Control to the Arizona Pet Project to better reflect our organization, mission and role in the community. WHAT MAKES IT SO UNIQUE? Our values and philosophy are much different from what you traditionally see in animal welfare. We come at saving the lives of animals with a very human-centric approach, looking at how we can partner with families in our community to better understand the challenges they were facing in keeping their pets and try to help. This allows us to address the root causes of pet homelessness. WILL YOU TELL ABOUT YOUR OWN PETS? We currently have two dogs and two birds, and the bonds I’ve seen form between my son and them are just so special. Having pets has taught him compassion and empathy—our animals are there for us during the good times and the bad, and it reinforces my belief that this bond should be available to everyone. WHAT ABOUT YOUR PERSONAL FOSTERING EXPERIENCE? We’ve had more than 70 foster animals in our home, and we focus on the pets who truly have nowhere else to go. The lessons our foster dogs have taught us are invaluable, and I truly believe they save us as much as we save them. WILL YOU SHARE A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR EXPERIENCE WITH SPICOLI? A local family rescued Spicoli from hours before he was set to be euthanized at an animal shelter after he fell seriously ill while waiting five long months for a family to adopt him. We received Spicoli as a foster while he was still in pretty bad shape, and months of intense healing followed until he was healthy enough to be adopted. Spicoli now lives with an amazing family where he is immensely loved and spoiled.

HOW DID YOUR FAMILY COME TO BE INVOLVED WITH FOSTERING DOGS? We found fostering when our oldest daughter needed a few community service hours for National Junior Honor Society. Then the whole family got involved—Mom, Dad and four daughters—and we haven’t looked back. Through fostering, the kids have learned to put the needs of others before themselves, how to welcome someone with open arms and that they can make a real difference in the world. HOW HAS FOSTERING IMPACTED YOUR FAMILY’S LIFE? We’ve met so many amazing people through fostering. Not only do we volunteer with many caring people who devote endless hours to the dogs, but we’ve also met so many great people who choose to adopt instead of buying from breeders. Knowing that we’ve saved more than 300 dogs is an indescribable feeling. WILL YOU SHARE A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR OWN DOGS, ADDISON BOO AND CALI RUE? When our kids were younger, they really wanted a small dog that would stay small. So we took the family to the Humane Society, but they were closed. On the way home, we drove by people who were selling small dogs on the side of the road (before it was illegal to do so). That's where we found Addison Boo, and she’s been with us for more than 11 years now. After we began fostering, we made a deal as a family that if we ever decided to keep a foster, we had to stop. However, one day a horribly dirty, matted poodle mix puppy showed up on our driveway. We did everything possible to find the owners but no one stepped up, and since we weren't technically "fostering" her, keeping her wouldn't really be "keeping a foster." That's how we managed to add Cali Rue to our household, and she’s been a great addition to the family. August 2018 | Paradise Valley Lifestyle
