IT'S HARD TO BELIEVE WE'RE NEARING THE END OF 2018. If you're like me, you're wondering, "Where did this year go?!" I seem to ask myself that more often. And then, I step back and realize, that, even with as fast as time seems to fly, I'm so grateful for all I'm experiencing along my journey. This month is our "Thankful" issue at Paradise Valley Lifestyle. We aptly celebrate with some wonderful individuals who are following their hearts: a decorated veteran United States Air Force colonel who works with veterans and military members on many levels, and a mother who created a nonprofit that helps soldiers after they return home to Arizona, including her son who inspired her. There are also two former Hollywood actresses who, for almost 60 years, have changed the lives of thousands of children. You'll also discover how local travel adventures can be inspiring or perhaps a Mediterranean dining experience at the Valley's newest restaurant. Or maybe it's the beauty of photographing perfectly presented dishes. We've also offered a few options if you'd like to get involved in a charity or do some volunteering this month—or all year long! So what are you thankful for? For me, it's of course my husband, Mike, and our families. It's also the people I've met as publisher of Paradise Valley Lifestyle. It's been the opportunity to provide you with interesting pieces and special events every month. It's my advertising partners, my readers and now, the woman I'm passing the torch to, to continue growing this wonderful publication, Tammy Fellows. A UNIQUE CONCEPT TO THE VALLEY, KOVO HIGHLIGHTS A WIDE SELECTION OF CUISINE FROM THE MEDITERRANEAN REGION. KOVO showcases the traditional cuisines of the Mediterranean region, combined with new world flair and ingredients. According to KOVO Modern Mediterranean’s owner, Yianni Ioannou, "Dining out in the Mediterranean culture is a very celebrated and social affair. At KOVO, we’ve created an energetic, communal environment within the restaurant, from our community table to our open dining room, to our large, wraparound bar and patio. This allows guests to have a more adventurous dining experience. The menu features a wide selection of shareable plates, which are great for enjoying with a date or a close group of friends.” The Greek word kovo means “to carve,” and as such, rotisserie meats will be predominately displayed in the open kitchen and will be served in signature entrees. HEROES HELP FELLOW VETERANS THIS HOLIDAY SEASON VETERANS IN OUR COMMUNITY HAVE NOT ONLY SERVED OUR COUNTRY, BUT THEY ALSO ARE PROUDLY SERVING OTHERS HERE AT HOME. These hometown heroes know the difficulties veterans face when they return to civilian life and have worked closely with their comrades to make the transition easier and protect their families, while also providing them with stability and friendship.

Col. Sam Young served for 28 years in the United States Air Force, culminating his career in 1994 at Luke Air Force Base as the 56th Fighter Wing Base (Support Group) Commander. However, his heart of gold left him with a yearning to assist fellow soldiers returning home after active duty and has led to several achievements in this arena since his retirement. “When I retired, I was the director of services for the Arizona Republic, responsible for security, new construction and operational maintenance. But it was crucial to me to stay involved in the community as well, and that is where the Veterans Medical Leadership Council came into play,” Sam says. Sam has been involved with Veterans Medical Leadership Council for eight years, serving as president for two years as well being involved with the VMLC's prestigious Heroes One and All Luncheon. During this time, the VMLC has raised more than $500,000 to support the needs of Maricopa County military veterans. “Our mission at VMLC is to ensure quality medical and mental health care for Maricopa County veterans and to encourage initiatives that honor the contributions made to our community by veterans and our military members currently defending our country.” There are a variety of ways in which VMLC supports programs that directly serve U.S. troops and veterans: the VMLC Returning Warriors Program provides immediate financial assistance for veterans in crisis, the annual Arizona Veterans Stand-Down is a one-stop event offering basic needs and community services for the homeless, American Airlines donates airfare vouchers to veterans who are referred for evaluation or treatment at out-of-state medical facilities and so much more. “I saw a need to help kids who were coming home with medical issues, PTSD, loss of limbs, etc. There was one young man who couldn’t afford to get to Washington D.C. to pick up a prosthetic leg that had been built for him, so we paid for his transportation. We support the Arizona Veterans Retirement Home

as well. We funded 200 beds; we helped build an aviary with birds, fund new clothing, shoes and jackets with the assistance of Walmart. We bought warming blankets to help with patient circulation issues, just to name a few things,” Sam says.

Mattresses, microwaves, sheets, silverware, towels, plates and glasses are key items they supply. “We want them to have the basics,” he says. Although a small organization, VMLC makes sure the money goes directly to those who need it. “There are also so many resources we can connect veterans with, such as financial counseling. Getting them the right resources and tools is what we want to do. Kathy Pearce, founder of Arizona Heroes to Hometowns, had a mission—and it was a very personal one. “I was an advocate with the Department of Defense and wanted to start an organization to help soldiers returning home here in Arizona. The driving force behind my ambition to do so in 2010 was my son, Brent, who was injured in war,” she says. Brent Bretz returned home after his 2004 war injury, and Kathy soon realized there was no substantial local assistance for men like him. She took her previous knowledge and applied it to helping all veterans, with a limitless base. “It’s not just those who have physical injuries that we help, it’s also those with PTSD or unseen problems. Our realm of help goes beyond combat veterans,” she says. Brent says this program is important to him because he knows firsthand the difficulties that await when you return home from war. “For me, it was a loss of community and loss of having a tightknit group to rely on. I felt apprehension back at home to talk to anyone about my issues. This is a new and younger generation that is going through this process of stepping back into community. I wanted to bring these young veterans back together and make connections, form a camaraderie,” he says. Heroes to Hometowns is a nonprofit organization with several means to give back. It hosts military family dinners at holiday time with Santa and Mrs. Claus. Gifts are handed out, coupled with adopt-a-family opportunities. Monthly dinner follows, and the Turkey to Troops program provides food boxes and grocery gift cards to military families so they can have a proper Thanksgiving dinner. Rent assistance, a peer mentoring program and a school supply drive with The Dollar Tree help these men and women get back to being on their own and providing for themselves and their families. “The monthly dinners help us all reconnect with likeminded people and give us something to look forward to.

CJ is new to the Phoenix area, arriving in mid-2017 following a period in New York working with and studying under nationally renowned interior photographers. Should I Repair or Replace My A/C Unit? An air conditioning unit is generally the 3rd largest purchase a homeowner will make, so I wanted to share some expert advice on determining when you are spending good or bad money when it comes to your air conditioning unit. Many of the older units were built to last. You could just keep replacing major components and keep your AC running, so the decision to not bite the bigger expense was always justified. After all, a $3,000 repair still sounds better than a $6 to $8,000 new unit. But the best decision that pays off in the long run comes from evaluating several factors.

I always tell people than when you start to spend more on repairs than you do on maintenance, it is a good time to at least start gathering A/C replacement quotes. Continual problems and repairs are the first sign your unit is creeping towards “end of days”. So at least having time to prepare and not make a hasty and expensive decisions will save you money and stress. Each repair might just be money wasted to buy you more time.
Age is a Key Factor
Next, look at unit age. I talk to people all the time who still have AC units from the 90s and 2000s. Those 20-30 year old units initially were built with a 6-8 SEER, but with age is maybe operating now at a 2-3 SEER. If you were to replace it with a new 14 SEER unit you just gained 7x the energy efficiency. Your AC unit accounts for about 50% of your energy consumption, so that hefty of a SEER increase could easily save around a$1,000 a year on utility bills. Now that $3,000 repair bill doesn’t seem like such a good return on investment anymore, right? Instead you could replace your unit and have the utility savings now and they also pay you more over the next decade. Not to mention you won’t have the headaches and hot house stress with no working AC for a period of time.
