What's Your Style?
F
ashion: a - a prevailing custom, usage or style; b - (1) - the prevailing style (as in a dress) during a particular time; (2) - a garment in such a style. We all have (or desire to have) a style. So what's yours? Are you classic or trendy? Conservative or flashy? I probably lean more towards trendy, but definitely have some classic pieces in my closet. And now and then, I like a little flash!

ew things can help to freshen up a look like a coat of paint. For those looking for something that looks good and lasts, however, not all paints are created equal. Whether it is a cabinet, a wall, an accent room or even the entire house, Benjamin Moore is sure to have the perfect solution for any painting project. Most people begin their search for the right paint inspired by a color, but once they get it home and apply it to walls, furniture or any other surface, at that point the emphasis shifts toward a finish that is durable as well as something that can be scrubbed clean. Made possible by their proprietary Gennex Colorant Advantage, Benjamin Moore is able to offer the industry standard in both color and durability. “Typically, adding colorant actually thins and weakens paint, making it more difficult to apply and making the end product less workable and less washable,” explains David Rippy of Arizona Paint Supply, who is the exclusive comprehensive retailer of Benjamin Moore products in the Valley. “The Benjamin Moore coloring system actually helps to fortify the resin, which results in a more durable finished product and a more brilliant and longer-lasting color.” This also helps to prevent premature fading, something that has long been an issue in the intense desert climate, even on richer and deeper shades. Across their premium line of paints, Benjamin Moore generally offers three basic lines for select needs. Their Ben line is considered to be their most user-friendly and a perfect option for the DIYer who wants great results while minding a budget. The Regal line is the most popular and considered to be the “workhorse” line offering a perfect balance of ease of application and durable finish, while the Aura line offers Color Lock technology which helps it to withstand the harshest of conditions. Choosing the right line of paints depends on the project. The Ben line is perfect for a guest room that sees limited traffic, while the Aura is great for kitchen cabinets or bathroom walls that need to be able to take on the challenge of a bit of wear and tear, while Regal paints are perfect for most everything in between. David and his team at Arizona Paint Supply are proud of their relationship with Benjamin Moore and invite anyone to come in and explore their display of more than 3,600 colors that the brand has to offer, and can even help match a color for those who cannot quite find just what they had it mind. From design through preparation and application, Arizona Paint Supply will help to make sure your next painting project is set up for success from the very beginning. “People often don’t realize that when they hire a painter, only 20 percent of the cost is in the paint itself, while the other 80 percent is in the labor of repairing the surface and getting it prepared to accept the paint,” David says. “We are always happy to talk them through the process because sometimes they might have a high ceiling that they suddenly decide they do not want to paint themselves, and we can help them find a painter. Other people want to take on something challenging like painting their kitchen cabinets, and we will walk them through every step to make sure the end result is just what they want.” Arizona Paint Supply is located in the Paradise Village Gateway Shopping Center at the corner of Tatum and Shea. WHERE TO BEGIN
10 TIPS ON MANAGING HOME RENOVATION EXPECTATIONS FROM A PRO ARTICLE KORY KILMER | PHOTOGRAPHY BAXTER IMAGING
F
or more than two decades, Lauren Rautbord of Scottsdale’s own Paul Lauren Design Consultants has been helping her clients create the spaces of their dreams. She has learned that making sure homeowners know what to expect along the way is a key component to any successful renovation and offers a few pointers on managing renovation expectations.
1. WHAT RENOVATION PROJECTS HAVE THE BEST RETURN ON INVESTMENT IN TERMS OF HOME VALUE?
An updated kitchen and master bath will increase the home’s value. 16
Paradise Valley Lifestyle | September 2017
2. WHAT WOULD YOU WANT TO MAKE SURE SOMEONE CONSIDERING A LARGE HOME RENOVATION PROJECT REALLY THINKS ABOUT BEFORE COMMITTING TO A PROJECT?
The entire scope of the project should be carefully analyzed to determine what changes would add the most value, starting with a study of good and bad points of the property. They need to think about their budget and all it needs to cover, from taxes, professional and specialist fees, delivery and shipping costs to framing, hanging artwork, scotch-guarding and specialist cleaning. Factor in all the hidden costs and be realistic and honest about the budget they have available!
6. WHAT DO YOU TELL PEOPLE CONSIDERING A DIY APPROACH VS. HIRING A PROFESSIONAL?
Unless you have a background in homebuilding, I would strongly encourage people to consult a professional before attempting any project. 7.
WHAT
QUESTIONS
SHOULD
A
HOMEOWNER
ASK
PROSPECTIVE DESIGNERS AND CONTRACTORS?
First, homeowners should establish that the designer and contractor has recent, direct experience working in the area on projects of comparable scope and budget. Next, they should inquire about and understand how the designer and contractor will be compensated, particularly how much upfront, nonrefundable retainer may be required. Ensure that clear design drawings, including f loor plans, will be produced to avoid ambiguities. Every version of every plan must be clear to every member of the building team whether you think it relates to them or not. This is all very time-consuming and can cost a lot of money, but saves a lot of headaches in the end, as a good designer and contractor can help the homeowner establish a realistic budget that will add the most value to the home. 8. WHAT ARE A FEW CHARACTERISTICS OF A WELL-DESIGNED KITCHEN? BATHROOM?
The kitchen today is about more than cooking. It is a gathering place for family and entertaining friends. Be honest about how much cooking you will do. Nothing is more aggravating than cooking in a kitchen that is cluttered with stuff. A well-designed kitchen will have a place for everything to be put away so you can entertain without looking at all those appliances that you really never use. Blenders/mixers, toasters, knife blocks, all should have a space out of sight. For a well-designed bathroom, storage is essential. Make sure your design has plenty of cabinets and counter space. A large sink is unnecessary and takes up valuable counter space. 9. WHAT ARE SOME SIMPLE OR SMALLER PROJECTS A HOME 3. WHAT MIGHT YOU RECOMMEND SOMEONE TRY TO GET A
OWNER MIGHT CONSIDER WHILE LOOKING TO FRESHEN
FEEL FOR WHAT THEY MIGHT WANT TO INCORPORATE INTO
UP THE LOOK OF THEIR HOME WITHOUT THE HASSLE OR
THE DESIGN OF THEIR HOME RENOVATION PROJECT?
INVESTMENT OF A LARGE SCALE PROJECT?
The more educated a client can be on prices of materials and labor, the better they can decide the scope and come up with a realistic budget. Kitchen design showrooms are a great place to start gathering ideas and information.
To freshen up or update, paint is the best improvement for the money. Painting trim, ceilings, all doors and even cabinets can instantly update your home. Outdoor shutters and garage doors will add curb appeal and instantly transform your home.
FOR A RENOVATION PROJECT?
HOMEOWNER CONSIDERING A LARGE RENOVATION PROJECT?
Before a renovation is even considered, the value and resale value of the home has to be determined.
The best advice I would give a homeowner considering a large renovation project is to consult with a professional. Sometimes trying to save money by doing it yourself can cost more money and brain damage in the long run. For more information on Paul Lauren Design Consultants, please visit PaulLaurenDesigns.com.

5. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE SOMEONE IN TERMS OF
TRYING TO BALANCE PRACTICALITY VS. TRENDINESS WITH REGARDS TO A RENOVATION DESIGN?
In giving advice for renovations, I say keep it simple and classic. Upgrading flooring and paint can go a long way.

Fall Fashion Trends for 2017 W
hen it comes to fashion, everyone wants to create a look that reflects their own style and personality. We want designs and fabrics that are comfortable and colors that make us look great. This fall, nothing makes a bolder fashion statement than the color red. It is a power color that women can incorporate into their wardrobe in a dress, skirt, sweater or coat. As an accent color, it will look great as a vest, scarf, purse or pair of shoes. For men, a red sweater, T-shirt, long sleeve polo, or tie are excellent choices. You’ll also see the color brown making the fashion scene big this fall and be a main contender as a staple wardrobe color. Many say it's the new black. Accessories making the ladies' fashion scene this season includes the clutch purse and the wider belt. The clutch purse will appear in sophisticated designs for daytime and soft, elegant designs for the evening. Ladies, the wider belt is appearing over longer jackets and coats making it an attractive addition to your wardrobe. And, boots are back big with beaded embellishments and accents in unique styles. Many retro looks are being shown in hats, patterns and handbags. Western styles are stealing the scene with fashionable designs that include leather vests, fringe boots and cowhide prints. Plaids are big and will be found in dresses, vests, shirts and accessories. Not to be overlooked are the mid-calf skirts which are more flowing and versatile to take you from office to evening. Men will love dressing in unconstructed overshirts. Narrow pant legs are still a hit. And pairing a fashionable sports coat with a great pair of denim jeans will always be a classic, dressy-casual look. ARTICLE KATHLEEN BLAIR | PHOTOGRAPHY TONIA JOHNSTON PHOTOGRAPHY

LOOP JEAN COMPANY It’s all about comfort at Loop Jean Company located at The Shops at Gainey Village, and, despite being open only 10 months, it has already become the denim destination in the Valley for premium jeans that offer a comfortable fit for both men and women of all ages. The concept was created by husband and wife team Ted and Tamara Greve, who opened their first Loop Jean Company in Tucson 10 years ago. They created their business with this mission: Your destination for the world’s most sought-after brands for men and women, expertly fit by one of our specialists to ensure the most flattering jean possible. Currently, there are more than 15 brands of denim which range from skinny to bootcut for women, slim to relaxed for men and everything in between. Popular brands include Paige, Rag & Bone, AG and Citizens of Humanity. Store manager Jordyn Coty has been with the company seven years. She definitely knows her jeans, having dozens in her wardrobe so she can share from experience about the stretch, color retention and overall wear. Jordyn's objective is to help every customer find a perfect fitting jean they’ll love wearing. She starts by concentrating on the fit; the length and color come next. “Everyone deserves a great fitting, premium jean tailored to their body," Jordyn shares. “My job is matching the jean to their body shape.” Loop Jean Company carries a large collection and exclusive styles from Robert Graham. Other men's designer brands include Mizzen & Main, which has performance material with some stretch and is easy to pack and wear. There is a selection of Black House Academy T-shirts and button long-sleeve shirts. This winter they’re introducing Rag & Bone denim shirts, T-shirts and sweaters. To complete the look, Loop offers quality shoes from Cole Haan, OluKai and Two24 by Ariat for men and women, plus boots from Wolverine’s Thousand Mile Collection for men. On the ladies’ side, you’ll also find designer brands for shirts, sweaters, dresses, shoes and boots by Rails, Wilt, Heather and Equipment to name a few. Unique accessories include wax seal talismans from Pyrrha, Shinola watches, beautiful artisan silver buckles and a variety of leather belt straps. “Fashion trends for the fall are hand-sewn pearls on denim, brocade floral print designs and black on black embroidery, which you’ll find among the store’s new arrivals,” Jordyn says. In-house alterations complete the fit for every body type. Most inseams are 34 inches or longer, and the complimentary hemming includes removing the existing hem and creating a new one, so the jean lays just right. Other alterations include waist adjustments, leg tapering and jean patching to extend the longevity of your favorite pair. A wide range of sizes, 2-16, are available and sizes 18-22 can be special ordered. Other recognizable Canadian lines you’ll find are Michael Tyler, Tribal, Orly and Alison Sheri to name a few. Plus, there are large selections from top clothing designers Alberto Makali, FDJ French Dressing, Mesmerize, Tango Mango and Impulse. Every woman loves to accessorize their outfit, and at Ritzy Rags you’ll find a fabulous collection of accessories that include Mariana Jewelry that is made in Israel using Swarovski crystal and sterling silver. There are also beautiful Jimmy Crystal items, manufactured in New York, using Swarovski crystal in sunglasses, reading glasses and earrings. There are also unique purses that have beautiful designs and crystals from designer Mary Frances and others. Craig has a keen eye for fashion and detail. One of his main focuses is comfort without compromising style, and he works closely with some of the manufacturers to offer styles he knows will appeal to his clientele. This has helped Ritzy Rags and Shoes gain the reputation for having a great selection of comfortable, fashionable shoes and fun sandals. The lines carried are Mephisto, Beautifeel, Onex, Donald J Pliner, Eric Michael, and more. This fall’s emphasis is lower heels in suede and colored ankle boots. There is an array of unique styles, from sophisticated to artsy, with many being adjustable, ranging in sizes from 5-12, narrow to wide. With more than 40-plus years in the industry, Craig prides himself on offering “top-notch” customer service that has proven to be the key to maintaining a loyal client base in the thousands during his 30 years in the Valley. “I’ve built my store on selections, style and service”, he says. “If we don’t have an item, we will get it for you at no extra charge.” Ritzy Rags and Shoes The Shops at Gainey Village 8787 N.
