t’s hard to believe we’re flipping the calendar page, or scrolling through another month on our devices, and landing on August. Summer always seems to fly by. We look forward to those more relaxed days and vacations, visiting family and friends or maybe a new destination. We’ve celebrated our country’s independence with parades and fireworks. And, here in The Valley of the Sun, we’ve endured record-breaking temperatures! Now, hopefully, those under 100 degree days are closer in sight and, believe it or not, the new school year is right around the corner.

As we start preparing for those busy days of routine again, we thought we’d provide you with some back-to-school fashion insights. We all remember the first day of a new school year and planning on what we were going to wear. It’s exciting and scary, and probably the most documented day on cameras and videos! Smiles or tears, those moments are fun to look back on (as are the styles!) so be sure not to miss the opportunity. I even asked my kids to send me a picture of them their first day of classes at college! Yes, I’m THAT mom! When it comes to lunches, be sure to check out the Lunchbox SOS piece. Don’t be fooled, kids aren’t the only ones who get bored with the same old stuff, and we’ve offered up some creative ideas and healthy alternatives to make the most of that midday meal. You'll also read about some of the most important, and possibly influential, people in our lives: teachers. Besides the fact that I come from a family of teachers, I hold the utmost respect for them and am grateful for their dedication, patience and inspiration. I understand, firsthand, the passion behind the title. They are so much more than teachers. Robert Frost once said, “I’m not a teacher, but an awakener.” We, at Paradise Valley Lifestyle, say, “Thank you,” to all the teachers, present and past, who may be reading this. Lastly, music is in the air, and we’ve provided places to discover and let your hair down. THE DIANE & BRUCE HALLE FOUNDATION PROVIDES GRANT TO SUPPORT The Diane & Bruce Halle Foundation provided Child Crisis of Arizona with a $50,000 grant to support the organization’s expansion of its Early Head Start Program. The program’s new location, 817 N. Country Club Drive in Mesa, Arizona., celebrated its grand opening in April 2017 and serves 112 children up to 3 years old in center-based and home-based models. “Sadly, in Maricopa County, few children receive the measurable and positive benefits of early education programs, an issue that is especially prevalent in lower-income level groups,” Andrew Bridge, director of the Diane & Bruce Halle Foundation, says. “This grant supports Child Crisis of Arizona’s endeavor to expand its Early Head Start Program, providing impactful educational services to a larger number of children and parents within our community.” This expansion is comprised of two different programs to assist the needs of children and parents in one of seven pockets of poverty

Founded as the Mason Jar in 1979, this rock venue has a history that includes legendary acts such as Rage Against the Machine, Tool, Jane’s Addiction, Green Day, Guns N’ Roses, Nirvana, The Black Keys, Fall Out Boy, Jimmy Eat World, Avenged Sevenfold and more. In 2015, local music promoter Stephen “Psyko Steve” Chilton took over the building and turned it into The Rebel Lounge, with the promise that “the club’s musical heritage will continue to inspire the musical tone of the club, hosting tomorrow’s best musical acts before anyone else.” 18

The Corral Bar first opened back in 1935 as a place to serve workers after a long day building nearby Bartlett Dam. When resident, and character, Harold Gavagan bought the bar and inserted his name into the title in 1950, his marketing vision included stunts like caged lions and tigers, a makeshift swimming pool, Wild West shows and other attractions to try and entice residents up north to Cave Creek. Today, Harold’s is still a destination for live country music and dancing. They rotate popular local bands such as Mogollon, Crown Kings and Young Country throughout the month, with dance lessons on Fridays before the band takes the stage. Harold’s also hosts the Arizona Blues Project every Thursday as well as an acoustic set from various artists on Sundays.

Perhaps the most exciting news to hit the Valley’s live music scene recently is the announcement of a new venue in downtown Phoenix, The Van Buren. Housed in a building built in 1939 on the corner of Fourth Avenue and Van Buren as the original home of the Phoenix Motor Company auto dealership, the 21,000-square-foot building will be able to accommodate 1,800 concertgoers looking to see some of the best nationally touring artists, as well as a variety of community-focused events. The Van Buren is scheduled to open its doors by hosting a sold-out concert by Cold War Kids that will benefit Rosie’s House, a local organization that provides free after-school music education. hat makes a teacher great? Typically, the answer is rarely one that is easy to summarize in a word or two. With summer winding to a close and students across the Valley dusting off their backpack and preparing to head back to school, we asked a few of the communityâ€™s teachers to see what makes them tick.

Paradise Valley Lifestyle (PVL): What makes you so passionate about teaching? MKM: Each and every day, I strive to make a positive difference in the life of a child. This may sound cliché, but it is so very true. The well-known words of Forest E. Witcraft resonate with me: “A hundred years from now it will not matter what my bank account was, the sort of house I lived in or the kind of car I drove. But the world may be different because I was important in the life of a child.” PVL: Will you speak to what it’s like working at Phoenix Country Day School and your favorite part about it? MKM: Our leadership is consistently exploring leading-edge educational philosophies and considers it a priority to collaborate with our faculty to implement these principles into our teaching practice. In addition, our small class size allows us more time to build valuable relationships with our students and tailor our lessons to address the needs of each child. PVL: What is the most important thing you have learned from being a teacher? MKM: I actually learned this from my firstgrade teacher, Lillian Carey, who made me feel safe, capable and loved. Each day, when my little ones walk in the door, I want them to feel the same. If I create this environment, my students are not afraid to make mistakes, they achieve their own personal best, are quick to share their experiences and accomplishments, and “they dance as though no one is watching!” PVL: What is the most rewarding part of your career? MKM: Watching the children grow in self-confidence is incredibly rewarding. Throughout the year, I see the children transform as they become more aware and confident in their abilities. I see the child who begins to feel comfortable sharing his ideas, works through a disagreement with another child or finally understands a challenging concept. Not a day goes by that I’m not rewarded by my students. PVL: What is your favorite piece of advice to give to students? MKM: Be kind. At the end of the year, we talk about what we’ve learned throughout the year, recall our favorite events, our proudest moment, etc. I am always thrilled to hear the children say one of the things they learned was how to be kind! PVL: What makes you so passionate about teaching? SB: I truly believe that one of the best parts of life is learning. Being in the classroom allows me the opportunity to grow alongside my students. It is incredibly satisfying to see a child learn to read for the first time. Seeing the lightbulb go off and the pure joy that it brings is why I go back each and every day. PVL: Will you speak to what it’s like working at Archway Veritas and your favorite part about it? SB: I have been a first-grade teacher at Archway going on seven years and was there for the inaugural year. My favorite part is the community. My cohort of teachers that I stand by each day inspire me and provide unconditional friendship and strive to make each other better. Also, our parent community is incredible! I have felt supported and loved by all of the families who have passed through my classroom. PVL: What is the most important thing you have learned from being a teacher? SB: The most important lesson I have learned from being a teacher is that I will never be done learning. I have learned new tricks to enhance my lessons each year and always stumble across concepts that I can present in new ways to reach more students. PVL: What is the most rewarding part of your career? SB: The most rewarding part of my career is getting to be in a classroom full of wonderful little 6- and 7-year-olds. They bring a smile to my face every day and give me a greater purpose in life. I love their funny jokes, sweet stories and truly open minds. They inspire me to find the joy in everyday things and to not take myself so seriously. I love them. PVL: What is your favorite piece of advice to give to students? SB: I always tell my students that they are special and can do whatever they set their mind to. It is my job to give them the tools to succeed in life, doing whatever brings them joy while also being a positive coach in their corner. Life comes with its many challenges, and if I can be a glimmer of positivity in their life, then I have done my job. 22

PVL: What makes you so passionate about teaching? MO: I love leading students towards truths. Sharing my own passions in history and science and seeing a 6-year-old's face lighten up from the mysteries and the profundities found in all subjects is amazing. Knowing that I am helping shape the future in some way is incredible. PVL: Will you speak to what itâ€™s like working at Archway Veritas and your favorite part about it? MO: Archway Veritas is an amazing to work at. My colleagues are courteous and some of my dearest friends. I am constantly challenged to always do better and am always given incredible support from my administration. The headmaster and assistant headmaster give me specific and direct feedback though consistent and meaningful observations. I feel incredibly supported by the front office staff who are the welcoming light of our school. The community of parents and families allow our school to thrive. PVL: What is the most important thing you have learned from being a teacher? MO: Patience. Working with kindergarteners, I have learned to be extremely patient. I have also learned that every child deserves the best education that fills their soul with being able to recognize truth, beautyÂ and goodness. PVL: What is the most rewarding part of your career? MO: In kindergarten, seeing a child read for the first time. The light that fills that child's eyes makes me cry. To know that they have the world at their fingertips is an incredible feeling. PVL: What is your favorite piece of advice to give to students? MO: We are all learners. Be bold when asking questions and to never stop learning.

at McMahon grew up in Syracuse, New York. As a kid, she listened to the radio and strategically recorded mixtapes with her boom box, carefully hitting the stop button so she wouldn’t record the DJ over the song. Her favorites included pop, Motown, disco and southern rock tunes. Rhythms changed with the seasons, and summer brought melodies from John Denver, Carly Simon, Carole King and the Beatles. Her home was always filled with music. She played piano, violin and attempted to learn guitar. “Mom and I would do duets for the family. She’d play the piano, and I’d play the violin," Kat says. "I can’t say I’ve played much of either instrument in years unless you count ‘air playing,’ but I have fond memories." As cassette tapes were exchanged for compact discs, Kat grew up. Five states and 12 moves later, she landed in Arizona where she became an account manager with Lifestyle Publications. Kat became a publisher because she was seeking more involvement with the magazine. Kat is standing on the corner in Winslow, Arizona.

“My husband, Mike, came on board in March, and together, we’re helping connect community in North Scottsdale and Paradise Valley. It’s an adventure every day, and we’re blessed to meet the people, businesses and organizations we cross paths with,” she says. Kat spends a lot of time in her car and entertains herself by bopping and singing to pop, old school, Christian and country music. She enjoys a wide variety of music genres. Occasionally, she listens to talk radio. Mike has rubbed off on her a bit. Although her car gigs are fun, her favorite way to listen to music is live. Kat has rocked out at more than 50 concerts, including Journey, Genesis, Elton John, Rod Stewart, Michael W. Smith, The Jackson 5, Billy Joel, Maroon 5, Tim McGraw, Whitney Houston, Backstreet Boys (for her kids, of course), Tina Turner, Jimmy Buffet, Dave Matthews, Usher and Zac Brown Band. The performance that wins the prize for most memorable was Michael Jackson’s. “It was when he started his solo career with his ‘Off the Wall’ tour, and we were up front," Kat says.
