A Season of Giving
H
ere we are: December, the culmination of 2017. We're asking ourselves, "How can it possibly be December?" Especially here in the Valley where temps in the 90s are still somewhat fresh in our memories! Yet we find ourselves reflecting on the year that is almost over. Without recapping all the events, we can certainly say it's been a newsworthy year, filled with delight and disappointment. We'll catalog our memories and make plans to embrace, improve or change what's ahead in the new year. But before we do that, let's celebrate December and bid it farewell with all the gusto we can.
In this month's issue, we offer a variety of activities to consider. Looking to get into the spirit of the holiday? Make plans to visit "Arizona's Christmas City," better known as Prescott. A feast for your eyes, holiday lights will illuminate the historic courtyard and the sounds of the season will ring in the air. As festive as the holidays can be, they can also be difficult for many, but helping others is a sure way to lift your spirits. One of Mike's and my passions is giving back. Whatever cause or charity you support, giving back comes in many forms. We can offer our time, our talents or our treasures. Having this publication is a gift as it allows us the ability to showcase the plethora of wonderful charities in this area, and we've shared a few for you to get to know better. And what's the holiday season without events that require some gussying up? Not sure how to dress? Check out our piece that helps you decipher what attire might be appropriate. Once you've figured it out, we've provided some places that offer opportunities to ring in the New Year. I look forward to the days ahead as 2017 comes to a close. Mike and I will celebrate birthdays, spend time with beloved family and ingest the holiday fervor while being mindful of all of our blessings. And that includes you, our readers. With the help of the community, Chrysalis provides each client with enough gift cards to purchase gifts for their children, as well as cook a holiday meal. Donors can sponsor a child for $50, sponsor an adult for $25 and feed a family member for $15. There are also opportunities to sponsor different aspects of the holiday carnival. Chrysalis, a 36-year-old Arizona agency, leads the community to broad-based solutions to prevent domestic abuse. The lives of more than 1,400 individuals are impacted each year. FERNET HOT CHOCOLATE Makes 8-10 cups • 4 tablespoons cocoa powder • 4 tablespoons coconut sugar • 4 tablespoons dark chocolate chips • handful of vegan marshmallows (optional) Assemble jars with cocoa powder, then coconut sugar, chocolate chips and top off with marshmallows. The theme for this year is “A Cowboy Christmas, ” and the floats will highlight the cowboy culture of the West to celebrate the heritage of Prescott. The parade has become a time-honored tradition in the community and officially kicks off the holiday season. Slated to open in early summer 2018, First Place-Phoenix will also offer a twoyear transition academy in conjunction with Gateway Community College for residents whose ultimate goal is to live more independently, as well as a leadership institute for medical professionals and researchers when it is complete.

1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. 2. With an electric mixer, beat together the Crisco and sugar until creamy. Add eggs, one at a time. Then add milk and vanilla; mix well. 3. In a separate bowl, prepare dry ingredients. Return to dough mixture adding flour and baking powder and mix thoroughly. Combine flour mixture and egg mixture one tablespoon at a time until the mixture is completely blended. Place mixture in refrigerator and prepare filling. 4. For filling, place chopped figs and dates in mixer. On low speed, add preserves and marmalade. Mix well. When fully incorporated, add brown sugar, spices and citrus zest and mix well. Then add nuts and mix well. 5. To form cookies, begin by spreading some dough on a floured board. Using your hands, flatten dough into a rectangular shape, about 5 inches by 12 inches. Add some filling and spread out evenly. Roll dough to create a 2 ½-inch-by-12-inch log. Cut into 2-inch bars and place on parchment-lined cookie sheet. Sprinkle ground pistachios on each cookie. Repeat process with remaining dough. 6. Bake at 375 degrees for 15-20 minutes. 7. When cooled, dust with powdered sugar and store in airtight container. Cookies can be frozen.
