Fall into October

hile much of the country is experiencing warm hues of fall colors, those of us in the Valley of the Sun are experiencing cooler temps and getting back outdoors. It's exciting to think that fall is officially here. And you know what that means—sports (the World Series, soccer and football), comfort food and beer! Hailing from the Midwest and East Coast, I will admit, I still miss the changing of the leaves and the crisp fall air, but I can still sport my favorite team's colors in a sweatshirt and breathe in the smell of a tantalizing tailgate, at the stadium or in the backyard. Although I truly enjoy almost every sport, football is my favorite, and I'm thrilled that it's back and grateful for Saturday's college games and the NFL's Sunday Ticket! Whoop whoop! Mike and I break out the Chiefs gear, and it's on!

Playworks is a nonprofit that partners with elementary schools to create a place for every kid on the playground—a place where every kid belongs. It also keeps me updated on the smack-talk from the other teams in the league, as well as trade offers and roster moves,” he says. “ I also have the ESPN app, which goes beyond just baseball. I have it set up with my favorites, so I get alerted anytime there is news about the Diamondbacks, Cardinals or Packers. I can also use it to watch games in progress.” 16

One of his creations, High Noon, has become the Scottsdale brewery’s best-seller. He has two new seasonal brews for this fall and winter; Lyin’ Eyes, a white stout with chocolate and orange infused flavors and Dragon Eyes, a cinnamon orange with Two Brothers black tea. There are five beers brewed on-site and served on tap plus 11 beers brewed in Warrenville. The Domaine DuPage, a French country ale, is the flagship beer and is caramel tasting with a slight sweetness. The wide selection of food items on the menu is designed to accompany your beverage of choice. High Noon goes well with just about everything, especially the fried chicken or the margherita pizza with roasted garlic, pine nuts, fresh mozzarella cheese and Domaine DuPage Crust. Lyn’ Eyes pairs well with the tuna Nicoise salad and the Hoisin-Sriracha glazed Brussel sprouts that are grilled with spiced cashews, Fresno chili, sesame seeds and scallions. 24

Ron Kloth didn’t realize that his college days of homebrewing would eventually become a lifetime passion. He opened Papago Brewing in 2001 as a homebrew supply store and tasting room and now serves 500 beers, in bottles and cans and 30 craft beers on tap that continually rotate. Although not currently an active brewer, Papago Brewing continues to serve their two famous beers, Orange Blossom Ale and Coconut Joe Stout. Huss Brewing Company acquired these two beers along with the Papago beer brands. Orange Blossom Ale is a light beer

Ron, one of the founding members of the Arizona Society of Homebrewers, also carries local beers; a large refrigerator holds beers from around the world, including an Austria beer, radler and German beers from Weihenstephan Brewery, the oldest continuously operating brewery since 1040. “Beer is best drank fresh, so one should buy local beers,” Ron says. “When refrigerated, can beer stays fresh for six months compared to three to four months for bottled beer as the light breaks down the flavor. If stored at room temperature, the freshness is cut in half.” Partners Kristen Drewes and Johnny Miller assist with the operations of this proven brewery in south Scottsdale that will have a new home once the Papago Plaza is renovated.

Also, working in conjunction with the woman’s doctor improves the likelihood that she’s receiving well-rounded care.” Jones, who recently wrote a book for the general public on the mammogram process called the “Breast Test Book,” has been a radiologist for 20 years. After her radiology residency, she trained for an additional year learning all of the specifics of breast imaging. She says the two biggest risk factors for breast cancer are being a woman (gender) and getting older (age). “All women have the same baseline risk, and a mammogram is clearly the best tool we have in terms of finding breast cancer and decreasing mortality,” Jones says. She advises women start getting mammograms annually at age 40. (Most mammograms are covered by insurance.) “Some women may experience mild discomfort, but I tell them to see this as a beneficial exam, that if there was something there, we would find it early—and that helps to reduce their anxiety about the procedure,” she says. “Most patients leave feeling relieved that it wasn’t as bad as they thought.” Along with the spa-like atmosphere of each center, Solis’ warm and caring staff help make the entire procedure as comfortable as possible. “When a patient comes in we want them to feel like a part of our family,” Yoder Dale says. “We treat them like our mother, our sister, our daughter.” Solis currently has four locations in the Phoenix metro area: Chandler, Glendale, Central Phoenix and Paradise Valley.
