t was a clear, crisp January afternoon. The sun peeked out from a few scattered fluffy white clouds in the blue sky, the windows were rolled down on our new Subaru Forester and the soft breeze blew wisps of hair across my face. To most, it would seem like the perfect day, however, for me, it seemed a little less bright. I sat in the backseat of the car holding my mom’s thin and pale hand as we made the journey from Queen Creek to Phoenix for yet another doctor’s visit. I knew that this wasn’t how any of us planned on spending our Saturday, but we made the best of it, listening to music, telling stories and enjoying time spent as a family.

On the way home, we decided to celebrate a bit of good news we had received by stopping for dinner at San Tan Flats. We turned off the main road onto a dusty gravel street, passing green fields dotted with cotton and corn. We were stopped at a light when I noticed my mom’s eyes transfixed on something in the distance: two miniature ponies grazing under a tree at a nearby farm. As we passed the horses, her eyes widened and the corners of her mouth turned up in a faint smile. Her clear blue eyes were suddenly filled with calm and began to water as one of the ponies turned toward us, pricking his ears up and transfixing his gaze on her. Soon, we made stopping by the farm after her doctors visits a regular habit, and although she couldn’t get out of the car to see them, I was always amazed at the calming, comforting effect they had on her, almost as if they could sense she was sick. To this day, I will never forget how intuitive those mini ponies were or how much their mere presence seemed to take such a hold over my mom. Sometimes it takes more than doctors and medicine to heal; it takes the pure, innocent heart of an animal. Whether your pet serves as a playmate, companion or service animal, they undeniably have a special hold over your family and heart. In this issue, we want to say thank you to all the pets out there making our lives brighter, like Terraces resident David Cox’s beloved dog Charlie and all the pooches found at Gabriel’s Angeles, as well as the people, like Denise Batiselli from Arizona Small Dog Rescue, striving to make the world a better place for our pets. here’s a good reason that dogs are called “man’s best friend.” They are steadfast, devoted and constant companions that love their human counterparts with such selflessness that it’s almost impossible not to get attached. Whether bought as a puppy or rescued as an adult, dogs have a way of seamlessly weaving their way into our families and hearts. At least that’s how it seems to be for David Cox and his dog Charlie. A former Phoenix area banking executive, Cox used to escape the city’s hot summers for a month each year with his wife, traveling up to the Washington Peninsula. As time passed, however, the couple found it more in their interest to stay in Arizona year-round. That’s when Cox announced that he wanted to get a dog. With his wife’s blessing, and the help of their grandson, Cox began his search for the perfect pooch. One day, they alighted on a small Scottsdale pet shop that had some Havanese puppies in the window. “They had three or four of them at the store and my grandson picked him. So we went into 12

a little room, played with him for a while and decided that we would take him,” says Cox. On that very day in August 2007, Charlie officially became part of the Cox family, and has been an important member ever since. He soon became a best-loved part of the Stonegate community in Scottsdale, where the couple resided, as well, greeting neighbors with a friendly bark as he trotted along during walks or gazed out the windows of the front bedroom. “There’s just something about him that attracts everyone,” says Cox. “Once, while we were out walking him, there was this lady driving down the street who stopped the car when she saw us and pulled out a rug from her backseat. She had made Charlie a rug, and he still has it today.” That always cheerful, friendly demeanor that immediately seems to charm everyone he meets is at the root of his nickname, “Good Time Charlie,” which Cox affectionately calls him. “I really kind of just made that up because he is just so happy around other people,” says Cox. “He’s actually more receptive to people than he is to most other dogs.” Charlie has also proven to be an unwaveringly loyal companion and friend to Cox. After losing his wife last year, and upon moving to The Terraces of Phoenix (a pet-friendly continuing care retirement community), Charlie never left David’s side, their bond growing stronger with every passing day. “Ever since then he’s been sleeping with me at night,” says Cox. “He’s really just [such] an affectionate dog.” However, Charlie doesn’t just save his affection for David. Whether accompanying him on walks and grocery store trips or to Bible Study

each week, Charlie greets everyone he meets with the same warmth and loving friendliness he constantly shows toward his beloved owner. And on those rare occasions when David does venture out without him, you can bet Charlie’s there to greet his friend the minute he walks in the door. “When I come back he’s just tickled to death and jumps all over me,” says Cox. “He’s really just a great dog.” The feeling seems to be mutual, too. When asked how he feels about David, Charlie is quick to respond with a playful bark and enthusiastic wag of his tail. Friendship truly at its best! HOW WATCHING DOGS BLOSSOM INTO BELOVED FAMILY PETS INSPIRED ONE VALLEY RESIDENT

or as long as she can remember, Denise Batistelli has loved animals. Looking back, she credits her grandmother for fostering her interest in fourlegged creatures. “She would rescue stray dogs and cats out of the middle of six-lane highways in Southern California,” says Batistelli. In 2007, she began volunteering for the Arizona Humane Society as a dog walker and as a foster parent for medical need dogs. After deciding to focus her volunteering energy on no-kill rescues, Batistelli discovered Arizona Small Dog Rescue (AZSDR), a Phoenix-based no-kill, non-profit that’s devoted to rescuing dogs and cats. “I actively started fostering and volunteering with the Arizona Small Dog Rescue in August 2014, after I rescued a young puppy that was being given away for free on the app ‘OfferUp,’ says Batistelli. Because she knows that the biggest sustainability factor for a small, non-government assisted 501c3 like Arizona Small Dog Rescue is the donations from and the good will of the community surrounding it, Batistelli began hosting several fundraising events for the shelter. “In September 2015, with the Arizona Small Dog Rescue under new management, I accepted a position on the Board as their Fundraising Chair,” she says. In addition to constantly looking for new ways to generate funds to keep AZSDR’s doors open so the rescue can continue its mission, Batistelli fosters both puppies and many of the rescue’s long term medical dogs. She is the proud mom of three rescue dogs, Zoe, Charlie and Rudy, a 16-year-old cat named

Diablo, who she rescued as a kitten, and three lovebirds. The most rewarding part of volunteering with AZSDR, Batistelli says, are the connections that she has made with the animals, and with the other wonderful, like-minded people that volunteer alongside her. “I also find it very fulfilling to watch dogs that have lost hope and trust in humans, and are sick or injured, blossom into loving, playful, normal pups that go on to become wonderful family members and companions for others,” she says. “Of course, happy tears flow whenever a foster finds their new family.” While Batistelli puts in a lot of time volunteering for AZSDR, she says there are plenty of spots for people who have just an hour or two each week or month to volunteer. This includes helping bathe dogs on Saturday mornings before adoption events, or spending a couple of hours helping take care of and walk the dogs at the shelter location. Older kids and teens who want to help out at AZSDR are definitely able to do so, too. “We also offer two volunteer training classes a month at our shelter location, and we welcome our young rescuers between the ages of 10 to 18 to get involved, under the supervision of a parent or legal guardian, who are required to volunteer with them,” she says. “The only thing that is required to volunteer is the desire to do something for the greater good; for that one thing that you are passionate about. hances are that you’ve looked in at least one mirror today. You’ve looked at your hair, makeup a few times, or maybe even took a look to see if your bum looks too big in what you’re wearing. When we look into a mirror, we are actually looking for reassurance. We want to reassure ourselves that we look neat, young and presentable. With a regular mirror, we look AT ourselves, but we don’t look FOR ourselves. That’s where horses come in. They have a unique ability to mirror and respond to a person’s behavior, energy and body language. A horse summons you to take off that personal protective armor and invites you to be vulnerable and real. I have been riding and showing horses since I was a little girl, and I always sensed, but couldn’t articulate until later in life, that feeling that horses operated differently than us—they reacted to unseen energy and had the unique capability to read a person’s true emotions. They can tell if you mean what you say. They can sense whether you are expressing confidence, trust and receptiveness or shyness, fear and anger. We have all experienced a person’s energy just by sensing their vibes, but somehow horses can do it much better than us.

The connection we make with horses is truly extraordinary because it allows us to discover ourselves as we interact with them. They respond to positive energy and kindness, but if you’re nervous or guarded, they will act in mirror-like fashion. Then, when they finally feel your compassion and love, they will respond by rewarding you with the same, but ten fold. This wonderful gift of being is exemplified by a horse. f there is any doubt to the idea that sometimes a dog can make all the difference between a good day or bad, you’ve never met one of Gabriel’s Angels. Dedicated to delivering healing pet therapy to at-risk children, the organization is named after its canine founder, a Weimaraner, whose owner was inspired by his positive impact on the children at Crisis Nursery, where he appeared at a holiday party in 2000. Gabriel then spent

the next ten years visiting over 5,000 abused, neglected and other children in crisis. Though Gabriel passed away in 2010, his spirit lives on in the 185 Pet Therapy Teams that serve nearly 14,000 at-risk children each year. “We deal with kids who have experienced neglect, abuse, poverty, live in high-crime areas, and kids that have a high-propensity for violence and abuse in their lives,” explains Chief Development CONTINUED > Officer Michelle Shipitofsky.

“We were founded early on through Pam’s (Gabriel’s owner, Pam Gaber) interactions at Crisis Nursery, so it really was kids who were being taken from their homes because of abuse and neglect. Over the years, it’s expanded to the broader term of ‘at-risk,’ because when we started there were just 7,500 kids in the state foster system, yet today there are over 19,000.” Shiptofsky likes to highlight one story in particular when it comes to those early interactions of Gabriel and Pam with the kids. It involves a tough-as-nails four-year-old girl, who, near the end of a group visit, wanted to know when Pam and Gabriel would be coming back. Pam then assured her that they would return the next week. “Yeah right,” the girl exclaimed, and according to the program director, she spent the next week telling all of the other kids that there was no way they would be back, so not to bother getting their hopes up. Needless to say, Pam and Gabriel did return the next week, and, like clockwork, many weeks after that—each time the little girl was blown away. After being abandoned by both her parents, who were substance abusers, by the age of four, all she had known was disappointment and abandonment. 24

“But Pam came back, every single time, and every single time that little girl would take the lead in that classroom, and she would talk to Gabe, and she would walk Gabe. Gabe even got an invitation to her preschool graduation,” says Shipitofsky. “We see it all the time- there is always that one kid who doesn’t want to take part in the group, and the dog goes and finds them, stays by them, and leans on them until slowly, but surely, they start to pet them and the walls that are up just start breaking down.” For those who think their dog might make a good candidate to become one of Gabriel’s Angels, each month the organization hosts a free one-hour information session, where they explain the different kinds of therapy animals that are needed as well as some of the training that is required. Gabriel’s Angels is also always on the lookout for some “Helping Hands,” a group of non-pet volunteers who receive the same training as a volunteer with a pet, and offer support out in the field to both the therapy teams and the kids they serve. y two long-haired Chihuahuas, Autumn and Rocket, came into my life on October 19, 2010. My parents had thought that their dog was pregnant, then knew for sure after she gave birth in our guest room. My Dad told me that our dog had become a mom that night, so I ventured downstairs to the bedroom to see. The puppies were impossibly small black dogs with their eyes closed, and could easily fit in the palm of my hand. During the first few weeks of their lives, their mom took great care of them. She feed them and protected them, even going so far as hiding them in the closet to keep them safe. Watching them grow was pure joy. From teaching them how to walk on a leash to seeing them getting used to wearing collars; every moment is now a cherished memory. Watching the first time they saw and played in snow. Everything was just so new to them, and to me too. Even though my family had always owned dogs, we had never had puppies before. We even tied bows around their necks during their first Christmas. They were our gifts. The puppies became all mine to take care of last summer when I left my home state of Virginia to move to Phoenix. They were my road-tripping sidekicks for the entire 2,000-mile journey. We chowed down on countless chicken strips at Sonic drive-thrus, and I gave them water when I pulled off of the road at a run-down truck stop in some no-name town in Oklahoma near the Texas border. We all walked to a local park so we could watch the sunset together in Santa Fe. I saw the Arkansas Ozarks f ly by my windshield with Autumn in the passenger seat and Rocket in the back, all leashed up in their car seats. That trip was such an amazing experience, and I can’t imagine making it without them. Even though they can be a handful, caring for them is the most effortless thing I do.

Rocket is my tiny boy dog. He’s just six pounds, but I love to call him my guard dog. He’s always alert. His favorite place? Right by the door. He’s spunky and loves being held, even if he only tolerates it for a few moments at a time. His nicknames include Cohete (rocket in Spanish), Rocky Rocket (but never Rocky), and Rocketta. Autumn is my affectionate and sensitive girl. When she was getting bigger, my family called her the deer dog because she had long limbs. One of her ears is slow to stand up—a common Chihuahua trait. She loves getting her tummy rubbed, she’ll let me hold her all day, and she’s always giving me kisses. I call Autumn my latte dog because she has golden fur that looks like the espresso-based drink. Her collar and leash are decked out in red hearts because she has a big one and her nicknames include Autie, Otono, and Autie dog. From the way they’re always excited when I walk in the door to their near constant presence in my life for almost six years now, each and every moment with them matters in equally small and large ways. And as much as I give them, they give me so much more.
