think it’s safe to say that I inherited my passion for volunteering from my mother. A teacher, and one of the strongest, kindest and most compassionate hearts that I knew, my mother always made it a point to get involved with the community in one way or another—from fundraising for the annual Pumpkin Festival and Christmas Drive to starting new after school clubs for her students and even becoming my Girl Scout leader, she always served selflessly. I remember those years as a Girl Scout visiting retirement homes and putting on plays for the residents, planting flowers and trees in parks and writing thank you notes to local service men. It was through activities like these that, even at a young age, I learned that the satisfaction you got from giving to others far outweighed the little time it took to show someone you cared.

I took this spirit of service with me all the way throughout high school, where I became passionately involved in helping out at a small church-run preschool for children living in rough circumstances, coming to not only admire the children for their resilience, but the teachers as well for their unending kindness. Then it was off to college, where, at Pepperdine University, a very much service-oriented school, I spent three years working as a teacher’s aid in special needs and first through third grade classes for America Reads. Today, as editor of North Scottsdale, Paradise Valley and Chandler Lifestyle Magazines, I have been incredibly blessed to have gotten to know and become involved with some of the many organizations around the Valley, such as St. Jude, JFCS and J3T, Childhelp, PANDA, the American Heart Association, the American Cancer Society and many more. Although all these groups help very diverse causes, they all have one thing in common: the people behind them. I have seen first hand how just one person’s simple act of kindness can change someone’s day, week or even life; and when they all get together something truly amazing happens and lives all over are touched and hearts are healed. To all those caring hearts out there, keep doing what you are doing because you are truly making a difference. You are truly appreciated. Thank you.

ne of the most common quotes regarding being generous is, “It’s better to give, than to receive.” We’ve all heard it before and, most likely, we’ve all said it. With Thanksgiving upon us this month and the holiday season around the corner, it seems this is when everyone buys into that a bit more. Do we believe it, though? When I became the new publisher of Paradise Valley Lifestyle, my husband, Mike, and I looked at this as an opportunity to give voices to those that needed to be heard. Those organizations that we all support. Those “causes” that we are passionate about, whether it be because of a personal connection or because our companies/businesses have an interest in them. For us, Southwest Autism Research and Resource Center (SARRC) immediately spoke to us because we have a son on the spectrum. Their autism services and programs are highly regarded and forward thinking. And did you know PBS Newshour recently dubbed Phoenix “the most autism-friendly city in the world”? HopeKids is also important to us. They provide ongoing support to families with life-threatening illnesses, while restoring hope and transforming lives. So this issue is dedicated to those that are philanthropic within our communities and to our wonderful partners that have learned how rewarding it is to give, be it time, talent or financial.

ocated inside the Scottsdale Civic Center Library is a small cafe with a big mission. Nationally, more than 90-percent of adults with autism are unemployed or underemployed. However, this coffee shop—aptly titled Beneficial Beans Cafe—is looking to turn that statistic around locally, by providing internship opportunities to adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). “If you visit our café, you will be welcomed with a smile by one of our interns who is happy to take your order,” says Sarah Sanchez, social enterprise coordinator for Beneficial Beans. “Our interns can help you decide on any drink from our full espresso menu, a variety of loose leaf teas, fresh baked pastries, or any one of our salads and sandwiches. And don’t forget to ask about the ‘drink of the month.’ Our Caramel White Mocha is a staff favorite.” Kate Thoene, social enterprise director, explains that Beneficial Beans, opened in July 2012, is the social enterprise coffee and produce business of the Southwest Autism Research & Resource Center (SARRC). What is a social enterprise business? “We use the methods and disciplines of business along with the power of the marketplace to generate revenue and create internship opportunities for adults with autism,” explains Thoene. The social enterprise creates these internship opportunities in two areas: the cafe and a garden. “The café provides training opportunities to adults with autism to gain general employment skills and work history,” says Sanchez. “We develop a unique 12-week individualized plan for each intern that will prepare them for community-based employment. Interns work alongside Beneficial Beans Cafe staff and assist in all aspects of daily

operations, including drink preparation, customer service, cleaning and cashiering. They also learn core competencies such as time management, task management, professionalism and teamwork.” Sanchez notes that acquiring these skills are about so much more than just resume builders too. “Studies show that only 10-percent of adults with autism are employed. Beneficial Beans is changing that statistic on a local level,” she explains. “Seventy percent of adults who have received employment services through us are gainfully employed. For these individuals, work is more than a pay check: it is dignity, freedom, friendships and the path to live more independently.” “They [the internships] taught me that I can do anything, especially with the coffee, that I put my mind to,” says Kristopher Wipprecht, an intern who completed both the cafe and garden internship programs. For those who can’t make it into the cafe, Beneficial Beans coffee is available to purchase online, with the proceeds going back to the internship program (just like buying products in the cafe). This holiday season, both the website and cafe will have ongoing seasonal specials. “If Beneficial Beans Cafe is known for something, I’d want it to be the quality of our coffee and our exceptional service,” says Sanchez. “You are also supporting three of our vendors, Stuttering King Bakery, Essential Nourishment and SMILE Biscotti. Each of these businesses are owned and operated by adults with autism, and they provide our café with delicious biscotti, muffins, scones and organic energy bars.” Cafe Manager Aaron Zuroff notes that it’s not only the interns who benefit from working at Beneficial Beans either. “Working for Beneficial Beans Café gives me the opportunity to take my love of coffee and people and use it to facilitate the achievement of employment through guidance, patience and compassion so adults with autism may find their place in the world,” he says. TO PROTECT AND SERVE

A SPECIAL TRIBUTE TO VALLEY VETERAN AND PRESIDENT OF THE VMLC, SAM YOUNG WHAT LED YOU TO ENLIST IN THE U.S. AIR FORCE?

My father proudly served his country for 25 years both in the Army and Air Force—in WWII, Korea and the Cold War. As an Aeronautics Engineering major, I enrolled in Air Force Reserve Officer Training and entered the Air Force in 1966 at a time when the Vietnam War was beginning to escalate. WHAT AREAS OF SERVICE WERE YOU IN?

My eye sight precluded me from flying, so I entered into the Management Engineering career field. This lead to assignments in Alaska, Europe, the Pentagon and various locations in the U.S. My final assignment was at Luke Air Force Base as the Mission Support Group (Base) Commander. WHAT WAS ONE OF YOUR MOST MEMORABLE EXPERIENCES WHILE SERVING IN THE U.S. AIR FORCE?

While serving in the Organization of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in Washington D.C., I attended the Congressional Medal of Honor presentation by President Reagan to Staff Sergeant Roy Benavidez for his gallantry in Vietnam. President Reagan actually read the citation before presenting the Medal of Honor. It was an incredible privilege to be there. WHAT WAS ONE OF YOUR PROUDEST MOMENTS?

When I joined the Air Force in 1966, my father, a veteran of 25 years, was the Commencement Speaker and he personally pinned on my Second Lieutenant bars. HOW DID SERVING IN THE U.S. AIR FORCE HELP YOU GROW AS

Although already volunteering elsewhere, after 9-11 I joined the VMLC to help give back to the military men and women who have bravely served our country but who have fallen on hard times. HOW DOES THE VMLC’S MISSION RESONATE WITH YOUR OWN PERSONAL PHILOSOPHY?

Once you’re part of the military team, you don’t forget those you’ve served with. While you can’t do everything, you do what you can. The VMLC consists primarily of Veterans who have proudly served their country during times of combat and have seen their comrades go through tough times and want to help. As young service members began returning from Iraq/ Afghanistan, VMLC founded its Returning Warrior (RW) program to assist those trying to get their lives back on track. Whether repairing broken vehicles needed to keep medical appointments, or get to work, pay utility bills or help keep a roof over a family’s head, the VMLC works with hospital case workers to help where it can. It is thanks to the generosity of community corporations, businesses and patriotic individuals that the RW program is able to make a difference. They are also a key member of our team to help veterans!

an you hear it? Listen closely, for it’s always there. That strong, steady, eternal beat that is uniquely ours, the rhythm of our lives—our heartbeat. It has always been there and always will be—from that very first pulse heard on an ultrasound to the nervous flutter of a first day at school to the thrilling sensation of first love and the tragic ache of loss. It lives on long after us too, through our children and their children; a beautiful rhythm that transcends time. No one understands this sentiment better than this year’s 57th Annual Phoenix Heart Ball Chairman Jennifer Carmer, who, along with her sister Jamie Goslin and daughter Caroline Carmer, sit down to share what really makes their hearts beat.

THE VERY FIRST BEAT

That pulse to give back to others by any means that they can runs deep through all three women’s veins, something they acquired from Jennifer and Jamie’s mother— a beautiful, strong woman with a passion for helping and inspiring others. “You just learn so much from your parents, and our mother was always volunteering. I remember one year she was our Girl Scout Leader and cookie chairman, and she really went all out for it. Our whole garage was filled with boxes of cookies for weeks, but it was so much fun,” recalls Jamie. “That was mom in a nutshell, always serving.” As a nurse, their mother also knew all the ins and outs of how to keep a heart healthy, both physically and emotionally, using her expertise to nourish and rehabilitate all the hearts in need of mending around her.

“One of the things my mom did that I’ll always remember is that she would constantly encourage you. She always seemed to have the right words and would take the time to write little encouraging notes to people,” says Jennifer. “She was just one of those people that had compassion no matter what, and I still aspire to be just like that.” A STEADY RHYTHM

It seems that both Jennifer and Jamie followed in their mother’s footsteps, honoring her legacy in different ways. Jamie, who inherited her mother’s knack for caring for those who are ill, grew up to become a nurse too, working closely with school children and implementing practices of healthy living, along with volunteerism and compassion, into the lives of her own children as well. “Even though I had a full-time job, I always took a day out of each week to volunteer in my kids’ classrooms so they knew that I was there to support them, which is something I think I probably learned from my mother,” she says. Jennifer also developed a passion for getting out in the community and lending a helping hand, especially when it came to setting an example for her own children. “My mom was always there for us growing up no matter what,” says Caroline. “She just takes care of everything, no matter what it is. I still call whenever there is something wrong or there’s something that I can’t explain.” CONTINUED >

It was actually while volunteering in her daughter’s classroom that Jennifer found what truly makes her heart beat. “I got really involved in school activities, and one day I met some women who were on the Phoenix Heart Ball committee and we became friends and soon I was asked to be on the committee,” says Jennifer. With each passing year, Jennifer got more and more involved as a committee member, as she came to deeply admire not only the American Heart Association’s work in advancing heart care technology, but also in educating the community about preventative measures through programs such as CPR training and the Halle Heart Museum, in Phoenix. Finally, last year, the committee approached her about becoming chairman of the 57th Annual Heart Ball. “I never expected them to ask me to do it and hadn’t really ever thought of becoming chairman before,” says Jennifer. “But then I remembered my mother and that the whole reason I even started to volunteer was because of what was ingrained in me as a child: that if someone needed something you helped, no matter what.” LIVING LEGACY

In honor of the strongest heart she knew, that of her mother, Jennifer came up with this year’s Phoenix Heart Ball theme of “Hearts in Rhythm,” along with the platform of raising awareness for women’s heart disease and theme color pink. “My mother is the reason that I am here today. She was always volunteering, always such a beautiful, strong woman and always wearing bright pink,” says Jennifer. “Just like a light in a room, always gentle, kind and compassionate—a perfect woman,” adds Caroline. From grandmother, to daughter, to granddaughter; one heartbeat keeping time in a beautiful, melodious rhythm throughout the years and for many more ahead. here is nothing like coming home from a long day, grabbing a snack from the pantry or fridge and sitting down to relax and unwind. It’s a simple thing that most of us do on a daily basis without even thinking about it, yet it’s also something we oftentimes take for granted. Many foster youth and teens aging out of the foster care system have never experienced the security of knowing that they will leave school or work and come back to a stable environment or hot meal, and the struggle to find a consistent source of food becomes a burden as they try to improve their lives. That’s where organizations like the Jewish Family and Children’s Service (JFCS) come in. Founded in 1935 by a group of Phoenix women, JFCS has grown over the years to become the leading non-profit, non-sectarian organization in comprehensive behavioral health for children, families and adults. “We really do everything, from taking care of children to providing services for adults,” says Carrol Gottfried, director of development 22

for JFCS. “I just think we’ve made a wonderful commitment to the future of Arizona with our behavioral health and now integrated healthcare programs.” One of these programs, Real World Job Development, works with teens currently aging out of the foster care system—many of them with very little education and life skills—to provide them with the resources, support and encouragement needed to get their GED, find a job or an apartment and pave a path of independence and success. “I just feel really strongly that our youth should have an education and the life skills they need to become positive members of our community and society,” says Gottfried. And the rewards gained at Real World —for both the foster youth and those involved in the program—are truly life-changing. “It’s just great to hear the success stories. To hear about children that were completely lost and now have adjusted, have jobs and college degrees and are self-sufficient is just so fulfilling. Some

of them have even gone on to give back and help other youth,” says Gottfried. It was just that— the unending positivity, encouragement and dedication of the Real World staff to helping these youth succeed— which first caught the attention of Holly Packer after she took a tour of the facility over five years ago. “I was so impressed by the program and all the students in it because I knew the hardships these youth who were aging out of the foster care system were going through and really admired them so much for choosing to work hard, live independently and change the course of their lives journey,” she says. When asked what was needed the most at Real World, the resounding answer was food. So, later that evening, Packer sat down at her kitchen table and devised a plan to ask people from around her community to donate just three food items a month to the program—and thus, Just Three Things (J3T) was born. “It started small, with me just asking some of the people that I know to donate three food items a month, then simply by word of mouth it got bigger and bigger and the food just starting coming in,” says Packer. “It’s now grown beyond what I ever thought, and my dream is to expand enough one day so that we have food to give to all of JFCS facilities.” What began as one small bookshelf housing a few can and boxed goods at Real World has now grown into a fullfledged pantry room, where youth can grab two or three meals a day and not worry about eating while trying to balance school and work. But more importantly, it’s also a testament to the whole community’s support and appreciation for the teens’ commitment to improving their lives. “I remember one day as I was delivering food to the pantry, a girl came up and asked me what I had to do to get people to donate the food. And when I told her that all I really had to do was ask, and she was shocked,” says Packer. “If you really think about their lives and all that they have been through, no one has really cared or supported them. So for people to be willing to do this for them really gives them encouragement and worth.” That’s what is truly at the heart of both JFCS and Just Three Things—a dedication to making sure foster youth are not only given an education and life skills, but also showing them that they are worth it, that they matter, and that they still have so much to offer to our society. Nordon Manor has what many Phoenix homes sorely lack: history. Built in the 1970s to resemble a Pennsylvania farmhouse, the mansion is now receiving a massive upgrade and expansion to make it feel both modern and historic all at once.

THE PAST

But first, just how did an 18th century farmhouse end up in Phoenix? It all started when York, Pennsylvania transplants the Lo Piccolos decided that they wanted to bring a slice of the East Coast with them to Phoenix, which they did, literally brick-by-brick. Wood beams, windows, door hinges and other materials were all transported via railcar from the couple’s native state to Phoenix to build the home. After living there for more than four decades, the couple brought on the Mackey Martin Realty Group in 2009 to help revitalize and sell the historic home—the Lo Piccolos lived there until construction began in September 2016. “They wanted somebody who would stay with them throughout the journey,” says Mackey Martin of the Mackey Martin Group. The group—a family-run real estate company led by Mackey Martin, along with with sons Kelly and Trey Martin—has been championing the project from day one. “We’re one of the few family groups around here,” says Trey. “That’s what makes us kind of special. I think people enjoy working with a family.” THE FUTURE

To assist with the selling of the home, the 4.16-acre parcel of land Nordon Manor rests upon was divided up into four different plots, with a new home planned to be built on each one—the main house and accompanying guest house will serve as the centerpiece. The finished product is tentatively to be called Nordon Manor Estates. “The first thing I wanted to do was respect the DNA of the farmhouse, but resurrect and reimagine it as what I’m going to call a Western farmhouse,” says C.P. Drewett, founder of Drewett Works architecture firm. To achieve this look, the exterior shell of the home will largely be preserved, and a 14-foot wraparound porch—a

unique feature for the area—and an extended roof line will be added to the main house. In helping preserve the home’s historical feel, crown molding and trim profiles are being removed, sandblasted, and then possibly re-used in the remodeled home. Right now, the entire manor is currently at 7,181 square feet, although it might get up to 10,000 square feet by the time the project is completed. The main home will feature four bedrooms, along with the guest home—which is being redesigned as an entertainment space— and will house an additional bedroom. Other highlights include an elevator and a rare “Wall Street” exit—a way for a person to exit the home through the kitchen without disturbing others still sleeping—is also being constructed. Expansive glass windows will showcase the home’s breathtaking views of Camelback Mountain. The other single-level homes will be designed to complement the “Western Farmhouse.” Each of the planned homes will have knockout views of Camelback. “The view of Camelback Mountain is not a 10, it’s an 11,” says builder Sage Lentz of Sage Luxury Homes. “Your proximity to the best schools, best restaurants, best shopping is premiere. You’ve got everything.” Besides the premiere address and stunning views, Arcadia also offers residents a strong sense of community. The Martins know the area well too, as Mackey lives in Arcadia and Trey and Kelly grew up there. “You can borrow a cup of sugar in Arcadia,” says Mackey. “They all work collectively together.” Much like Nordon Manor itself, Arcadia has a “unique ability to still hold the past, yet be in the present,” she says. “I don’t know of CONTINUED > any other place that you can say that.” November 2016 | Paradise Valley Lifestyle

The Nordon Manor renovations are tentatively slated to be finished in April or May of 2017. Although the completion date might change, one thing is certain: “Whoever buys the main home is buying a one-of-a-kind home in Arcadia,” says Kelly. “There will be nothing before it or after it. They’re going to have the jewel of Arcadia.”

n 1992, brothers Dane and Travis Boersma got an espresso machine and started experimenting with different coffee drinks. Parting Thoughts

ou haven’t experienced the immeasurable flavor of perfection until you’ve tasted an authentic French

croissant. Now, there are many American versions of croissants, and for the untrained palette, they all taste pretty good. However, when you have the opportunity to relish a croissant that only the French know how to make, you will immediately taste the difference; as the crust is much more light, flaky and buttery. I only know of two places where you can experience such delicacies– in Paris, naturally, and at Essence Bakery Cafe.

Eugenia Theodosopoulos grew up in Southern Ohio and started baking pies at the age of 13 for her grandfather’s restaurant. At the age of 26, Eugenia went to Paris for Culinary School where she studied under some of the best French chefs in the city. She also met her husband, Giles Combes, there and in 1994 they moved to Arizona and opened a catering business. After 17 years of catering, they opened Essence Bakery Café in Tempe, and in 2013, they opened the Arcadia location. Chef Eugenia’s specialties include French croissants, napoleons, French macaroons and baguettes. She is still passionate about her love for baking and creating culinary delicacies, which lead to her being awarded the Arizona Culinary Hall of Fame, Pastry Chef Extraordinaire in 2011. In addition, her talent extends to the bakery’s lunch menu, which offers a wonderful selection with daily specials— there is only one word that describes her Quiche Loraine – Wow!
