A Letter from the Editor

May is a month of beauty: The flowers are blooming, the weather is warmer, and the promise of summer is on the horizon. In May, we recognize the incredible women who make our world more vibrant. Whether they are mothers, daughters, friends, or colleagues, these women are the silent forces who shape our days, filling our lives with meaning.

As a mom, I am often reminded of the gift of motherhood and how much our children shape us by bringing joy and laughter into our lives. Our daughter recently celebrated her birthday, and her contagious excitement the entire week leading up to the big day was a reminder to soak up these little moments as much as possible.

While Mother’s Day gives us the perfect opportunity to pause and say thank you to those in our personal lives, we also want to celebrate the powerful women strengthening our community through entrepreneurship and leadership.

In this issue, we are celebrating women in our community who pour their love into their craft and community every day. We are highlighting a female business owner in a male-dominated industry who provides comfort and confidence through reliable, compassionate service; a local realtor who invests in "genuine relationships” with her clients; and a sourdough baker who pours love into her craft for others to enjoy.

Finally, we’re focusing on moms. They spend so much energy nurturing others, so we’ve gathered a few ways for them to recharge and take care of themselves.

All of these women contribute so much to Papillion, often behind the scenes. They create a beauty and an impact that cannot be replicated. Thank you, Papillion, for being an amazing community and for letting us share these stories with you.

Have a beautiful May!

Moms’ Local Favorites

The Best Local Spots for Family Fun and Girls' Nights

Leisure time in motherhood can often be a balance between an afternoon outing with the kids and a night out with friends. While being a mom may be central to our identities, nurturing our friendships and our own sense of fun is just as vital.

As we prepared this Women’s Issue, we reached out to our community of local moms and asked them a simple but important question: Where are your favorite places to go for a

1. Halleck Park:

This park is the ultimate spot for an easy afternoon outdoors. It’s a total win for kids and moms alike because the playgrounds keep the kids entertained while moms can easily jump in on the fun or gather with friends under the shaded pavilions. The trails winding around the trees are perfect for exploring on bikes or scooters. The pond is a great place for a picnic lunch or some low-stress fishing with kids.

2. We Rock the Spectrum:

A premier destination for a “Mom’s Day Out,” this specialized sensory gym features unique equipment such as zip lines, trampolines, and climbing structures designed for children of all abilities to play together safely. Moms love this spot because it provides a secure, indoor environment where kids can burn off energy regardless of the weather. It is the perfect place to connect with other local parents while your little ones enjoy meaningful, sensory-rich play.

day out with the kids, and where do you head when it’s finally time for a night out with friends?

For those daytime adventures, our local moms emphasized the importance of welcoming, active spaces that are easy to navigate. While we are showcasing some of the topvoted outdoor and sensory spots in this guide, a couple of other top nominations included Chick-fil-A, due to its indoor play area that makes lunch time feel like a midday break, as well as the Papillion Library, which is a popular place for Storytime, the playroom, and picking up adventure passes to local attractions.

1. Twisted Vine:

Located in downtown Papillion, this craft beer and wine bar is the ultimate destination for a lively night out with friends. Moms frequently gather here for the popular Music Bingo on Thursday nights, where groups can enjoy cocktails, listen to great music, and compete for prizes in a vibrant, social atmosphere. The outdoor patio also draws crowds for relaxing summer nights.

2. Wine Cellar 510:

For a more sophisticated or relaxed evening, Wine Cellar 510 offers an intimate setting specializing in global wine regions. Their warm hospitality and gourmet snack trays, including meat and cheese boards or specialty flatbreads, provide the perfect accompaniment for deep conversations and a much-needed reset.

When it’s time for a night out with friends, some prefer a quiet night out for connection with other moms, while others prefer high-energy spots to celebrate a milestone. Included in the top nominations was the local favorite restaurant, Sauced. Not only is the food incredible, but their back patio was mentioned as a great place to enjoy dinner.

Below are the top picks for memorable afternoon adventures with the kids and the best local spots to enjoy an evening out with friends. Whether you are packing a diaper bag or grabbing your favorite clutch, we hope this guide inspires your next Papillion outing.

MOVING WITH PURPOSE

In an industry often defined by strength and physicality, Kira McGahan is proving there is another way to lead. As the founder of Movers and Shakers, she has built a company that prioritizes empathy, professionalism, and connection to offer a fresh take on moving services.

McGahan’s path into the industry was anything but traditional. While working a standard 8-to-5 job, she formed relationships with local real estate agents, which opened her eyes to a gap in the home staging market. However, McGahan quickly realized the opportunity was much broader in the moving industry.

“Maybe if we had a moving company that was organized from an operational standpoint and hired movers that set themselves to a higher standard…” she says.

With support from an investor, Movers and Shakers launched in fall 2024. Growth came quickly.

“It all ramped up quicker than we thought it was going to—which is such a great thing.”

As a female founder in a male-dominated field, McGahan brings a unique perspective to the business, one rooted in care.

“As a women-owned and led business, we saw the opportunity to create a service that put empathy and customer care at the forefront of every move,” she says.

That approach begins with her hands-on consultation process. McGahan meets clients in person, walking through each step to create clarity from the start. “It’s a more comfortable environment.”

Her role as the face of the company challenges expectations.

“When you think moving company, you think big, strong, burly men,” she says, “but I’m the face of the operation, which is kind of unheard of.”

In place of masculine brawn, she offers a personal touch for each client. From military relocations to families in transition, Movers and Shakers tailors each move to the client’s situation. Small touches, like detailed explanations and even goody bags, help transform what is often a stressful situation into a worry-free experience.

“Nothing is transactional; we’re trying to build relationships with our clients.”

Now expanding into home cleanouts and junk removal, the company continues to grow its services while staying grounded in its mission.

For McGahan, the work is both challenging and deeply rewarding.

“I’ve handled situations that I didn’t think I could handle,” she says. Through it all, she credits her team. “My movers are the stars of my show.”

With licensed and insured services throughout the Midwest, Movers and Shakers is not just moving belongings—it is moving the industry forward.

HOME, HEART, AND A DASH of Humor

HOW SANDY DAVIS TURNS REAL ESTATE INTO RELATIONSHIPS
ARTICLE BY JANETTE CALABRO | PHOTOGRAPHY BY BOBBI JO BEAVER

In today’s ever-shifting housing market, timing matters—but so do people. Just ask Papillion-based real estate agent Sandy Davis of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Ambassador Real Estate, who brings both savvy advice and heartfelt connection to every client she serves.

“There is a cost to waiting to buy. If you want to buy, buy now,” Sandy says with the kind of clarity that comes from years of watching the market move. “We have been shifting to more of a buyer’s market, with more buying power and negotiations where buyers can be picky. But sellers too still have an advantage with the great Spring selling season upon us, March, April, and May.”

While market insight is important, Sandy believes the real foundation of her business is something deeper: relationships. Raised on a small-town farm, she carried those values with her as she settled in Papillion and eventually moved from the corporate world into real estate. Today, she describes her work as relationship-based rather than transaction-based.  “I am very passionate about the relationships I build,” Sandy explains. “What that means is the transaction doesn’t stop after you sign on the dotted line. That’s when it all begins.”  For Sandy, that philosophy shows up in creative and thoughtful ways. She stays connected to what she affectionately calls her “forever clients”—past, current, and prospective homeowners—through regular touchpoints throughout the year.

“Although I consistently stay in touch with my clients with creative pop-bys, I have two big parties every year,” she says of the June (National Homeownership Month) and November Thanksgiving Celebrations. “Anybody who bought, built, or sold a home with me is invited to my home, including anyone who referred them!”

Another tradition has become a conversation starter in homes across the area: personalized doormats. “They all get to pick out an outdoor mat,” Sandy says with a laugh. “I make sure they have a mat that has a sense of humor or something that caters to their lifestyle.”

November brings another crowd favorite—her annual Thanksgiving Pie Party. Clients can swing by her home to pick up a beautifully wrapped apple or pumpkin pie, complete with bows and a complimentary bottle of wine.

“I always look forward to your Homeownership open house, Sandy!” wrote one client, Tracey L. “These cool door mats make for some fun conversation with my guests, and your annual Thanksgiving pie party makes for fun conversation too! My family gets to enjoy your pretty pie, and I don’t have to bake!”

Beyond real estate, Sandy also invests her energy in the community she loves. In addition to her leadership role with the Sarpy Synergy Center Sphere Chapter, she is an active member of St. Columbkille and the Papillion Junior Women’s Club, supporting local nonprofits through dedicated fundraising.

“It’s been an amazing journey,” she says. “There’s something special about Papillion. The community has that small-town feel. It reminds me of where I grew up.”

And if her clients are any indication, that small-town spirit—combined with a little humor, a warm pie, and a well-placed doormat—has made Sandy Davis feel right at home.

BECKY HILLYARD

From Side Hustle to Style Empire

The power of taste, trust, and the courage to “just start.”

She didn’t have a business plan, a media budget, or even a name anyone could pronounce. What Becky Hillyard had was taste, a young family, and the instinct to just start. Today, her lifestyle brand Cella Jane commands an audience the size of Vogue’s , she’s nine collections strong with Splendid, and she’s built it all while raising three kids — refusing to sacrifice one for the other. In an exclusive conversation for the Share the Lifestyle podcast, Becky shares what it really takes to build a brand, a career, and a life you love. Read the highlights below, then scan the QR code for the full conversation.

Q: WHEN DID YOU KNOW CELLA JANE WAS MORE THAN A HOBBY?

A: Two moments. Women started emailing me saying they bought something I recommended and felt amazing — asking me to help them find a dress for a wedding. That felt incredible. Then I looked at my affiliate numbers for one month and realized I could cover our mortgage. I thought, I can actually do this. I never set out to build a business. I started it because I genuinely loved it.

Becky in Splendid x @CellaJaneBlog Spring 2026 Collection

Q: WHAT WAS THE BIGGEST RISK YOU EVER TOOK WITH THE BRAND?

A: Designing my own collection. It’s easy to point at items on a website and say I love these. But to create something from scratch, put your name on it, and wait to see if people connect with it — that’s terrifying. I had an incredible partner in Splendid, and women loved the pieces. It was the biggest risk and the biggest accomplishment.

Q: HOW HAS INFLUENCER MARKETING CHANGED SINCE YOU STARTED?

A: When I started, brands didn’t know whether to take it seriously. Now it’s a legitimate line item in their marketing budgets — sometimes bigger than TV. Because what we’ve built is trust. People trust a real recommendation from someone they follow far more than a commercial. There’s no question about it now.

Q: YOU’RE A MOM OF THREE RUNNING A FULL BRAND. WHAT DOES YOUR DAY ACTUALLY LOOK LIKE?

A: I try to get up at five and not hit snooze — that first hour before the house wakes up is the most productive, most peaceful hour of my day. Then it’s all hands on deck with the kids and school drop-off. After that I work — planning content, connecting with my team, editing. After pickup, the day shifts completely and it’s all about them. I’ve learned to protect both halves fiercely, because both matter.

Q: WHAT WOULD YOU TELL SOMEONE WHO WANTS TO BUILD SOMETHING OF THEIR OWN BUT KEEPS WAITING?

A: Don’t wait. Don’t wait for the perfect camera, the right strategy, or enough followers. We find every excuse to stay comfortable. Just start, be consistent, and be authentically yourself. The right people will find you — and they’ll stay.

This conversation is just the beginning. Becky goes deeper on the risks that almost stopped her, the design process behind her latest Splendid collection, and what she’d tell her 2012 self today. Scan the QR code for the full, exclusive City Lifestyle interview on the Share the Lifestyle podcast.

“Trust is the only metric that actually compounds.”

HAIR

by NANCY

“I’VE ALWAYS LOVED ART AND CREATING. WHAT’S A BETTER WAY TO CREATE THAN ON SOMEONE’S HEAD? THAT’S MY CANVAS!”

YOUR HAIR, HER ART!

We connected with seasoned hairstylist Nancy Jones, owner of Hair by Nancy in Papillion, for her best advice and expertise on something very personal to all of us—our hair!

Nancy Jones, owner of Hair by Nancy in Sola Salon - Shadow Lake Towne Center

Q: WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO BECOME A STYLIST?

A: I actually wanted to be an archeologist. However, I’ve always loved art and creating. What’s a better way to (create) than on someone’s head? That’s my canvas! It’s a joy and a passion.

Q: A SIGNIFICANT POPULATION IN THE U.S. HAS CURLY HAIR. WHAT DREW YOU TO WORKING WITH VARIOUS HAIR TEXTURES?

A: I personally have curly hair. I struggled with getting good haircuts. Because I understand how curly hair works, I know how to cut it in the curve to get that spring. To me, it’s another form of art because it’s so unique to the individual.

Q: KERATIN TREATMENTS ARE POPULAR RIGHT NOW. WHAT SHOULD A CLIENT KNOW BEFORE BOOKING ONE?

A: It’s more of a chemical process that straightens the hair. Keratin is for the curly girls who want straight, sleek hair. It lasts about four months and is similar to a Brazilian blowout, but a safer option because it’s made from keratin.

Q: WHAT’S ONE OF YOUR FAVORITE TREATMENTS?

A: I really love my Head Spa treatments. For the hourlong treatment, I start with a neck and shoulder massage. Then I move up to remove excess sebum from the scalp. That’s the number one reason for hair loss (along with) DHT, which our bodies naturally make. I pre-cleanse the scalp with a specific shampoo before I wet the hair. After about ten minutes of massaging, I offer a heated or weighted blanket for extra comfort, along with a heated or jade eye mask. I rinse and apply a second clarifying shampoo with another scalp massage. I follow with a mask and steam the hair for about five to ten minutes, which is the best part! It feels absolutely incredible! People are loving it.

Q: WHAT HAIR TRENDS STAND OUT TODAY?

A: I feel like there’s not really one particular trend right now. If I had to pick one, it would be a lot of layers, a kind of modified shag is back.

Q: WHAT NEW SERVICES ARE YOU ADDING?

A: I’m going to school now for trichology, the study of scalp disorders. I joke with my husband, he’s bald, that we’re going to get him some hair. He’s going to be my guinea pig! 402.813.4766

Crumbs A COMBINATION OF CANVAS AND

WELCOME TO PAPILLION’S EDIBLE ART STUDIO

she and her son were both doing well, she felt the urge to create.

“I started doing little videos showing people how to make cake pops,” she says.

She had also been experimenting with sourdough with great success. “I haven’t bought bread at the store since I started,” she says.

She began making bread for friends, and they encouraged her to sell the extra loaves. That led her to think about reopening her business. Unfortunately, someone else was already using a similar name. So, she decided to rebrand and add sourdough.

Canvas & Crumbs became the perfect name for her edible art studio. It is a licensed cottage bakery, where cleanliness and customer satisfaction are top priorities.

Audelia (Audi) Orellana always wanted to be a wife and mother, but she also loved crafting, baking, and expressing herself as an entrepreneur. Originally from Las Vegas, Orellana met her future husband while in Omaha for a work trip. “I knew I didn’t want to raise kids in Las Vegas,” she says. “So, I moved.”

The motherhood dream came true with a full house of four sons, and in 2017, she started creating and selling cake pops. She became well-known for her unique flavors and artistic flair.

Orellana and her husband wanted to settle in Papillion because of the excellent schools. In 2018, they found a perfect home in the Hickory Hills neighborhood. “I don’t think I’m ever leaving,” she says.

In 2022, though, business took a back seat. Orellana’s teenage son was matched for a longawaited kidney transplant. In an unusually generous move, she decided to give back to the transplant program by donating one of her kidneys to an unknown recipient.

During their double recovery, Orellana ended up closing her cake pop business. Three years later, when

Most orders come from her website, but this spring Orellana offered a new element of fun – porch pickup. Customers can find their pre-orders on her porch at 84th and Giles, or they can select from the week’s special offerings, which she posts on social media. This honor system works well in the cottage bakery world, especially in a friendly town like Papillion.

Orellana still makes videos for the cake pop and sourdough communities. She wants to encourage other moms to be creative and to pursue their own business ideas. Her message to these entrepreneurs is simple.

“You can do it,” she says.
