LIFESTYLE LETTER

A Letter from the Publisher January brings that unmistakable fresh start feeling. The calendar resets, the days feel a little quieter, and suddenly we have space to think about who we want to become in the year ahead. For many of us, that leads to the often-dreaded question: what New Year’s Resolution will we make this year? But if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that dramatic resolutions do not create real change, and it surely doesn’t happen overnight. Small, steady decisions we make each day create it! Every time we talk about resolutions, discussions about health and wellness soon follow. “I will start exercising, try that new diet, eat healthy foods,” and the list goes on. Sometimes we need to be reminded that wellness isn’t one-dimensional. It encompasses physical, emotional, mental, relational, and more! In this issue, we kick off the year with ideas for caring for your health and wellness. We cover everything from understanding how to care for your skin, to caring for the health of those within your home, from prioritizing rest and recovery on the trip of a lifetime to enjoying a delicious drink you can feel great about. We even had the opportunity to sit down with a Monarch Graduate, getting set to take the court for the Supernovas this season, and find out what steady decisions she makes to help her perform at the highest level! Nothing we are doing here is earth-shattering. It’s fun, informative, relaxing, enjoyable, and most importantly…it’s attainable! As you step into the new year, we hope this issue helps you set aside the pressures of that big resolution and instead encourages you to make small decisions each day that, over time, will become the change you seek. Because wellness isn’t about perfection, it’s about awareness, compassion, and the willingness to take one small step at a time. Happy New Year, Papillion!

“WHEN WE look good, WE feel good, AND NATURALLY, WE SHOW UP better IN THE world.”

ANDREA’S APPROACH TO skincare IS refreshingly simple. “CLEANSE, TONE, moisturize, GLOW, AND PROTECT WITH sunscreen.” Andrea has dreamed of being an esthetician for as long as she can remember. She believes that when we look good, we feel good, and naturally, we show up better in the world. After putting herself through school and gaining experience across the industry, she brought her passion and expertise to Skin Experts Spa. She explains that our skin behaves like a sponge, absorbing whatever we apply. That’s why she’s committed to the spa’s high-quality formulas that merge science with nature. Every product is sulfate-free, plant-based, cruelty-free, and crafted with exceptional ingredients. Members also enjoy an unexpected perk: if life gets busy and you can’t make it in one month, you can gift your facial to

a friend (or let it roll over to the next month). It’s a benefit that tends to make you very popular. Andrea’s approach to skincare is refreshingly simple. She cautions against relying on social media for beauty advice, where fifteen-step routines and pricey products are the norm. “You don’t need all that,” she says. “Just five basic steps: cleanse, tone, moisturize, glow, and protect with sunscreen.” And if you’ve neglected your skin in the past? Don’t worry! Andrea encourages everyone to “come as you are”. She and her team are ready to guide you, one treatment at a time, into a bright, glowing new year. 402.502.3667 | SKINEXPERTS.com

A Healthy Home, All Winter Long HVAC ADVICE FROM JOHN HENRY’S FOR A HEALTHIER, MORE EFFICIENT HOME With winter fully setting in, the reliability of your home’s heating system is more important than ever. We sat down with Kameron Spickert, Lead Service Technician for John Henry’s Plumbing, Heating, Air, and Electrical, to gain insights for keeping your HVAC system and your family healthy this winter and beyond. WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS TO HAVING A HEALTHY HVAC SYSTEM? “Keeping your HVAC system healthy is the best way to prolong the life of the parts inside of the system and the life of the system in general,” says Kameron. It also reduces the likelihood of needing emergency service and improves indoor air quality, with regular filter changes and proper airflow being key contributors to maintaining a healthy system. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE HOMEOWNERS WANTING THEIR FURNACE TO RUN PROPERLY ALL WINTER? “Get your seasonal maintenance,” says Kameron. This is the single most effective way to prevent unexpected heating failures. It also helps technicians catch issues before they escalate into expensive repairs. Kameron finds that dirty flame sensors and bad capacitors are some of the most common issues that cause failure. “Keeping flame sensors clean and changing capacitors when needed are important and those are items included in your seasonal maintenance,” he says. ARE THERE EARLY WARNING SIGNS HOMEOWNERS SHOULD WATCH FOR? “Taking longer to heat the home” Kameron says is one of the most reliable indicators that a system needs attention. Another sign is “an extremely dusty or burning kind of smell.”

16

H OU SE CA LL | HO M E S ERVICE S

CAN AN HVAC SYSTEM AFFECT THE HEALTH AND WELL-BEING OF PEOPLE LIVING IN THE HOME? “Yes,” Kameron says, referencing humidity imbalance as one of the biggest hidden contributors to this. “Too little humidity in the home can make dust and allergens more likely to become airborne or lead to discomfort like dry skin, dry eyes, or irritated sinuses,” he says. “Too much humidity can create microbial growth and bacteria inside your ductwork, which can then end up in the air you are breathing.” WHAT’S THE BEST WAY TO PREVENT HUMIDITY-RELATED ISSUES? “A whole home humidifier and dehumidifier can help,” says Kameron. If using these, he suggests monitoring indoor humidity with a hygrometer or thermostat to maintain a relative humidity level between 30-50%. DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR HOMEOWNERS TRYING TO SAVE MONEY ON THEIR UTILITY BILLS? Along with regular maintenance to make sure your system is running efficiently and making sure you are changing air filters, Kameron says humidity control plays a role here as well. “Proper humidity levels increase the comfortability inside your home and when you are more comfortable you don’t run your system as much, which can help lower your energy bills,” he says. WHAT IS MOST MEANINGFUL FOR YOU IN YOUR WORK? “Seeing customer satisfaction,” says Kameron. “Seeing the smile on customers’ faces when you’re able to help them out of a hard situation, especially when it’s at a less costly rate.” What stays with him most is how quickly a customer’s stress can turn to relief. “Being able to see their moods change from, ‘Oh, can you please help us?’ to, ‘Oh, thank God you’re here.’ That’s always the best feeling.” 402.809.1116 | calljh.com

LOCAL SUPER N OVA SHINES BRIGHT Norah (Sis) TeBrake, Outside Hitter for the Omaha Supernovas, talks nutrition, routine, and Major League Volleyball

ARTICLE BY JANETTE CALABRO PHOTOGRAPHY BY OMAHA SUPERNOVAS

We sat down with Norah (Sis) TeBrake just as she was about to take the floor for the Omaha Supernovas in the 2026 Major League Volleyball (MLV) season—ready, focused, and raring to go. Standing 6-foot-1 and playing outside hitter, Norah’s journey began at Papillion–La Vista High School before exploding onto the national stage at Creighton University, where she graduated in 2024 as a four-time All-BIG EAST selection and helped lead the Bluejays to the NCAA Elite Eight. Her momentum didn’t stop there. She claimed gold with Team USA U21 at the Pan American Cup in both 2022 and 2023, was taken 3rd overall in the 2024 MLV Draft, and played a pivotal role in the Orlando Valkyries’ 2025 MLV Championship triumph. Now, she’s landed right back at home—bringing her elite skills, championship pedigree, and hometown pride to fuel the Supernovas’ next title run.

A: Anything explosive! Anything fast. I love single-leg squats and lunges. That’s really beneficial for the way I need to move as a volleyball player.

Q: WHAT’S YOUR BIGGEST CHALLENGE AS A PROFESSIONAL ATHLETE?

Q: NORAH, WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO PLAY VOLLEYBALL?

A: I started playing when I was eight or nine. My mom taught me a lot growing up and definitely got me interested in the sport.

Q: DO YOU FOLLOW A SPECIFIC NUTRITION PLAN?

Q: GREATEST SPORTS MOMENT?

Q: HOW DO YOU STAY CONDITIONED IN THE OFF-SEASON?

Q: ANY RITUALS?

A: It’s important to let ourselves go through the motions in the off-season. LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | S P ORTS + RE CRE AT ION

Q: WHAT’S ONE OF YOUR FAVORITE EXERCISES?

A: I went from starting all four years of college to starting at the bottom again as a professional. That was tricky to navigate. I think it’s important to realize my worth is not in my performance as an athlete. My faith is important, and it helps me to avoid the pressure of performing as a high-level athlete.

A: I figured out what makes me feel good, but I never followed a plan or diet. I focus on eating whole foods, and lots of protein and carbs for energy.

24

What I’m doing now may benefit me in May. I run on my own. The Supernovas sent us a program, so I’ve been doing a mix of that. A place to stay active without volleyball is kind of fun and a little break in the off-season. Lifting and mobility are two of my most important things, along with training.

A: The first that comes to mind is making the Sweet 16 and the Elite Eight my Senior year at Creighton. It was a dream come true.

A: Not really, but I love to dance before a game. I like to groove. It’s just who I am!

U N D E R S TA N D I N G T H E “WHY” BEHIND WELLNESS ARTICLE BY ANGELA BROOCKERD PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES AND PROVIDED

The New Frontier of Health AN INTERVIEW WITH DR. KYLE GILLETT

Why do so many people feel exhausted, foggy, or unwell, even when their medical tests insist everything is “fine”? Why are we prescribed quick fixes instead of being given real answers? Across modern medicine, a shift is happening. More patients are demanding real explanations, and more clinicians are rethinking what “healthcare” should actually mean. Leading that shift is Dr. Kyle Gillett, a dual board-certified physician in Family Medicine and Obesity Medicine and an expert in metabolic, hormonal, and preventive health. Through his clinic, research, and The Gillett Health Podcast, he’s become a trusted voice for people seeking science-based, root-cause solutions rather than symptom-based band-aids. “Functional medicine is really ‘root cause medicine,’” Dr. Gillett often says. “It’s about asking why the problem exists and not just quieting the noise.” In this Q&A, Dr. Gillett breaks down the most common questions he hears from patients and offers simple, actionable guidance anyone can begin using today.

1. “WHY DO I FEEL AWFUL EVEN THOUGH MY LABS ARE ‘NORMAL’?”

Dr. Gillett: I like to say, “There is no such thing as ‘we’ve done everything.’” We can always dig deeper. Often, the labs ordered are the wrong type of assay, or important markers like ferritin or SHBG—which binds testosterone and estrogen—are completely missed. Beyond lab work, there are other factors: mitochondrial health, sleep quality, mental health, and even how sensitive your dopamine and serotonin receptors are. “Normal” labs do not always equal normal physiology for you.

2. “HOW DO I FIX MY ENERGY, BRAIN FOG, OR SLEEP WITHOUT 20 MEDICATIONS?”

Dr. Gillett: Start with a good, comprehensive lab panel to assess nutrients and hormones. Then build the foundation with sleep. My favorite tool is the 10/3/2/1/0 rule: • 10 hours before bed: No caffeine • 3 hours: Avoid large meals and alcohol • 2 hours: No vigorous exercise • 1 hour: No bright blue or white light • 0: No snoozing and no inconsistent sleep/wake times Aim for 7+ hours of high-quality sleep. When sleep improves, energy almost always follows. CONTINUED >

3. “IS MY GUT ACTUALLY CAUSING ALL THESE OTHER PROBLEMS?”

Dr. Gillett: Gut health influences most major health issues, but it’s rarely the only problem. Diet is my second pillar of health for a reason. Exercise, sleep, and stress reduction all improve gut function too. Even simple tools like self-hypnotherapy apps can reduce gut-related symptoms.

4. “WHAT CAN I DO RIGHT NOW, TODAY, TO START FEELING BETTER?”

Dr. Gillett: Focus on the pillars of health: diet, exercise, sleep, stress, sunlight, social connection, and spiritual health. Treat them like habits and find ways to make them enjoyable or easy to start. Supplements and medications are supportive tools, not substitutes. Think of them like turbo chargers: they enhance a system that’s already functioning.

5. “WHAT DOES FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE ACTUALLY DO DIFFERENTLY?”

Dr. Gillett: True functional medicine is root-cause medicine, not cookie-cutter supplement regimens. Imagine an older adult with cognitive symptoms who receives multiple prescriptions from a conventional doctor. A functional approach might uncover something entirely different: B12 deficiency, hearing loss, and vision impairment. Fix those, and cognition often improves dramatically with no medications required.

6. “WHEN SHOULD SOMEONE TEST THEIR HORMONES, AND WHICH TESTS MATTER MOST?”

Dr. Gillett: Most adults should get a baseline hormone panel between ages 18 and 28, or earlier if they have symptoms like poor sleep, unexplained fatigue, or changes in heart rate. A proper panel includes testosterone, estradiol, fasting insulin, CMP, lipids (including Lp(a)), A1C, morning cortisol, IGF-1,

“I believe that true innovation requires a commitment to constructive self-criticism to continuously raise the standard of care.” DHEA-S, vitamin D, and ferritin. These markers catch metabolic and hormonal issues long before symptoms become severe.

7. “WHAT LONG-TERM TESTS ACTUALLY HELP PREVENT DISEASE, NOT JUST DIAGNOSE IT?”

Dr. Gillett: Preventive care is evolving rapidly. For heart health, I recommend Coronary Artery CT Angiography (CCTA) because it detects soft plaque that calcium scores miss. Knowing this data early informs you what is needed to prevent a heart attack. Instead of asking your doctor “Do I need cholesterol medication?” ask “Do I have plaque in my arteries?”. Full-body MRIs can be useful too, but they often find harmless abnormalities, which can lead to unnecessary stress or testing. Always weigh the pros and cons with a clinician who understands your goals.

A FINAL WORD FROM DR. GILLETT

“The goal isn’t to tell people what to do, rather it’s to give them the information they need to decide what’s best for themselves.” By understanding the why behind your symptoms, labs, and lifestyle choices, you become the driver, not the passenger, of your health journey.
