January 2025 PUBLISHER

Kyler Hendrickson | kyler.hendrickson@citylifestyle.com E D I TO R I AL C O O R D I N ATO R

Amy Hendrickson | amy.hendrickson@citylifestyle.com

Happy New Year, Papillion! For many of us, this time of year is full of excitement. It presents us with a reset, new horizons, and goals to pursue. For others, January can be a reminder of failed attempts and the burden of expectation that this year will be different. We approached this issue of Papillion City Lifestyle with the mindset of valuing what is sustainable over the long haul instead of quick fixes to check boxes in the short term. This can be achieved through education and consistency, leading us to an overall healthier well-being. We want to inspire you to make lasting, realistic, long-term improvements to your life that will not only better your life in 2025, but well beyond. I have never been a fan of New Year's resolutions, instead I like to set goals. What do I want to accomplish this year? Sometimes it is a big goal, and sometimes a small one, but more often than not it is a mixture of the two. For me, it's important to create a visual representation of my goals and hang it in a prominent place that I will see every day as a reminder of the end goal. When it comes to anything in life -- business, finance, food, home, and personal health - it's not what we do some days that move the needle - it's what we do MOST days. Having a constant reminder of the goal can be just what we need to take the required action most of the time. So, let's stop focusing on the sometimes choices we make and start focusing on the choices we make most of the time. Go ahead and plan that restful vacation, but also work to establish more regular rest in the work week. Join a fitness community or gym, but don't forget to occasionally enjoy that extra scoop of ice cream. Because again, in the end, it's not what we do some days, but what we do most days that will lead to a more peaceful, fulfilling, and fantastic year. We got this! Let's rock 2025 together!

Hometown Hero

Troy Gibler

“If we want a better future, we have to fix the obstacles we have today.” ~ Troy Gibler

This past year, Troy Gibler attended a business advisory meeting with PapillionLa Vista Community Schools, where he learned about female students facing physical and mental health risks and missing up to 25% of school due to a lack of access to period products. As a father of three daughters, Troy was deeply moved and determined to take action. “We have to fix it; this is our community,” he said. From this, the Sarpy Period Project was created in partnership with Access Period. The initiative has already begun delivering products to schools in the district, with plans to expand to other Sarpy County schools. An estimated 2,850 students in grades 5–12 lack access to period products, requiring approximately 170,000 products quarterly. To eliminate period poverty in schools, the Sarpy Period Project aims to raise $107,000 annually and has already secured $84,000. Thanks to Access Period, they can purchase products at wholesale prices, making financial contributions the most impactful way to help. Every dollar donated helps ensure students in our community have access to the products they need. To donate to the Sarpy Period Project please visit accessperiod.com/sarpycounty

WHERE PLAY AND CARE PRESERVE CURIOSITY IN EARLY CHILDHOOD ARTICLE BY VINCE MANCUSO | PHOTOGRAPHY BY A2I PHOTOGRAPHY

Hamilton Heights Child Development Center has established itself as far more than just a daycare center. Instead, they make it their mission to nurture wonder in minds as young as six weeks old. “We don’t take care of days,” says Adrianne Agulla, owner and executive director. “We take care of children.” Hamilton Heights offers educational programs for infants up to twelve years old, built on the belief that children’s natural curiosity leads to learning. “We are unique in that we are child-led,” Agulla says. “Our staff and our teachers have extensive training in early childhood development and education.” She describes the process of a child- or play-led program as one in which the teacher carefully observes each individual child and combines the classroom’s interests and children’s developmental needs to develop tailored lesson plans. “We see what the kids are interested in and what they have natural curiosity for,” Agulla says. “Play-based learning builds on what is sparking wonder in the classroom.” This approach of tailor-made lesson plans is used throughout the facility, even with Hamilton Heights’ youngest children, who are six

weeks old. These infants, Agulla explains, may not learn the alphabet or numbers, but the teachers provide sensory-based experiences, teach infants sign language, and speak to them audibly all day. “The more kids hear, the more they learn,” she says. Most importantly, the crucial relationship between child and caregiver, then student and teacher, begins in these early years and sets the foundation for intellectual and emotional growth and development. This commitment to child-led learning naturally extends to two crucial areas: health and well-being. “We believe that movement contributes to learning and wellness, so we have a strong emphasis on moving our bodies and keeping kids active,” Agulla says. Outdoor play is a large part of the program, with a portion of every day spent outside. “We have some weather guidelines, but we believe it’s usually bad gear, not bad weather.” The center’s wellness approach extends beyond physical activity to include social-emotional development and nutrition. Familystyle meals provide opportunities for social learning, while their in-house catering ensures nutritious options for children. CONTINUED >

With innovative educational philosophies, Agulla says one of the most significant ways Hamilton Heights strives to keep kids healthy is to let them be kids. “For 20 years, pressure has been put on childhood, and we’ve inadvertently taken away the opportunity that kids have to be kids.” Citing many memories adults share of their childhood, such as the freedom to be outside, kick dirt, and even be bored, Hamilton Heights works to preserve childhood and continue to spark that wonder we all had as children. “Protecting the sanctity of childhood and that play-based approach is important.” hamiltonheightscdc.com | 402.600.0169

Hamilton Heights Child Development Center Hamilton Heights Child Development Center opened its doors in 2003 with a single facility. Now, more than 20 years later, the early education center has more than five facilities. Of the many benefits seen from the program, the most apparent may be the social-emotional development. “When kids go to school, they don’t need to know their alphabet or their colors,” says Adrianne Agulla, owner and executive director. “What they really need to know is how to get along with others.” Agulla, who purchased the company eight years ago, said students of Hamilton Heights will enter elementary school knowing how to articulate their feelings and advocate for themselves. “The laughter from parents that say, ‘My child told me, “I feel frustrated when you do this,” she shares.. Agulla also shares one long-term that is not seen in current students but former ones as there are now staff members who grew up in the program. “That’s a huge testament that something went right,” Agulla says. 14

Just as a healthy body demands regular exercise and smart nutritional choices, your financial well-being requires proactive strategies and informed decision-making. To help you get financially fit in 2025, we’ve assembled a collection of crucial tax considerations and financial opportunities. These insights are specially tailored to help you shed some tax weight and strengthen your money muscles in the year ahead.

potentially minimize the taxes you’ll pay on your retirement income later in life. These strategies normally include contributions from your employer, making your results even better! Just like your daily run or gym session, consistency is the trick. As your financial trainer, we can help you max out the benefits that come with employer-sponsored strategies.

GET IN YOUR REPS WITH EMPLOYERSPONSORED STRATEGIES

When it comes to fitness, it pays to think one step ahead. Your taxes are no different. By taking tax-efficient income positions, you can maximize the tax-deferred and tax-free growth potential of your assets. We can help you hit your tax efficiency goals

Think of 401(k)s, 403(b)s and HSAs as daily workouts. You won’t see results immediately, but big wins can happen over time—and

with strategies like utilizing health savings accounts (HSAs), harvesting tax-free capital gains, and leveraging the tax advantages of non-IRA accounts.

FUEL RETIREMENT INCOME WITH A TAX-EFFICIENCY WITHDRAWAL STRATEGY

Like physical endurance on a long run or swim, financial longevity requires strategic thinking. Though you’ve already paid taxes on most of your retirement income, withdrawing too much at the wrong time or from the wrong account can bump you into a new tax bracket, increase your taxes, and even impact benefits like Medicare and Social Security. Like a running coach, we’ll work with you to develop a strategy that sets you up for success mile after mile, and year after year.

CRAFT A PATH AROUND SOCIAL SECURITY AND MEDICARE TAX HURDLES

There’s no shortage of things to overcome when it comes to fitness, and Social Security and Medicare benefits are no different. As a team, we know Social Security and Medicare taxation obstacles and can help you craft a path that bypasses pitfalls like IRMAA surcharges that can significantly increase premiums.

PLAN FOR WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE FINISH LINE

All races come to an end. When they do, it’s best to have a strategy for everyone cheering you on from the sidelines. We help develop cutting-edge strategies around long-term care and estate taxation. By efficiently using pre-tax IRA funds for potential care costs and implementing tax-smart estate strategies, we can help you build your financial endurance for the long haul. In 2025, let’s embark on this journey to financial fitness together. trinityne.com | 402.502.1225

YOU ARE Never Alone A CRY FOR HELP: BREAKING THE STIGMA OF MENTAL ILLNESS ARTICLE BY DEB REINARD | PHOTOGRAPHY BY SAMMIE RODRIGUEZ

The family down the street just brought their newborn home from the hospital. It looks like they have it all: a happy marriage, a beautiful home in the suburbs, and now a precious new baby. And while they do feel blessed and certainly appreciate their blessings, there is an internal struggle that needs help and support. “We don’t always portray on the outside what’s really going on on the inside,” said Melanie Smith, LIMHP, a mental health therapist and owner of Good Talk Counseling Services.

26

EXP E RT H E LP | HEALTH + WE LLN E SS

Smith said she sees patients from all walks of life; however, her specialty is helping women in their childbearing years who may be dealing with perinatal mood and anxiety disorders, post-partum depression, psychosis, or infertility issues. “This came from my own experience with post-partum PTSD,” Smith said. “I felt like there was not a huge population dealing with this at the time, but I soon realized I was not alone.” Smith said she offers several therapeutical modalities including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy which helps patients understand how their thoughts affect their emotions and how emotions affect behavior. Another helpful option is Reality Therapy when people understand how their choices affect their lives and how those choices affect people around them. In addition, Smith offers Solution-Focused therapy which involves dealing directly with the presenting problem. Smith said most patients are in therapy for six to 12 months, however, everyone’s treatment plan is individualized and based on their needs. She hopes the cost is not prohibitive for a patient, and she will be happy to help them with insurance approval. For added convenience, visits may be in person or by telehealth. “I love what I do,” Smith said. “I’m passionate about my work and I want to give everyone the opportunity to access therapy.” Smith said for far too long our society has been engaged in mental health shaming but thankfully that is beginning to improve. “People need to know there is help out there. You are never alone,” she said.

SWEETS The beginning of the year is packed with inspiration and motivation to get back on track after a sweet-filled holiday season. It can feel extreme, and it also can be depleting to cut oneself off from everything indulgent after weeks of eating favorite sweet and savory recipes. For sugar lovers who believe going cold-turkey feels intimidating or overwhelming, nutrition-packed desserts are a great way to stick to healthy food goals without the guilt.

1. Cut a banana into 8-10 small slices, around 1/2 inch each. 2. Spread 1/2 tablespoon of peanut butter (or your choice of nut butter) on each banana slice. 3. Drizzle a small amount of melted chocolate chips or caramel over each bite. 4. Freeze for 15-20 minutes and enjoy! Pro tip: A dash of sea salt flakes on top of these can be *chef’s kiss.* These are great to keep on hand in the freezer all weeklong. Once they set, add them to a closed container to keep the bananas from browning.

Late night snack cravings are real! When finding yourself rooting through the cabinets for a sweet fix, these protein cookie dough bites are a great way to curb temptation. This recipe yields around 20 small bites, which can be cut into small squares or rolled into dough balls. Each bite is around 105 calories. If you find the dough is a little too dry, add a dash of milk as needed. Ingredients • 1/4 cup milk • 1/2 cup vanilla protein powder • 1/4 cup maple syrup • 1/4 cup peanut butter (or alternate nut or sunflower butter) • 1 cup almond flour • 1 teaspoon vanilla • Chocolate chips as desired Pro tip: Use mini chocolate chips and for a dash of savory add sea salt flakes on top. Once combined, store the bites in the refrigerator in a covered container to keep them moist.

Danger ahead: this snack is amazing. It’s the easiest of the bunch and also satisfies a sweet tooth craving. This can be whipped together in just 5 minutes and makes just a small amount. Feel free to take creative liberty here with your amounts, but if you make it to this recipe, they are around 90 calories per bite.
