A Letter From The Publisher When I think about Papillion there are many things that come to mind, but I think our theme this month describes our community perfectly in two simple words. LOVE LOCAL! There is something special about living in a small town. Now Papillion may not seem like a small town to those who don’t live here. We have all the amenities we may need, we are quickly climbing up the list for largest cities in Nebraska, and we even have two high schools. Despite this, most of us would still say we live in a small town. That’s because when you live in a small town neighbors care about one another, they care about what is happening in the community, they care about keeping their parks clean, they care about the local businesses, they rally behind the local athletes trying to bring home a state championship, and the list could go on. And this is Papillion! We love our town, we love our neighbors, and we love being local! In this issue, we focus on telling local stories. From a local athlete who helped bring home a couple of those coveted state championships years back, and now returns home to lead the Omaha Supernovas in their inaugural season, to a small taco shop in the heart of Papillion with humble beginnings. From a carpenter who has built his business to serve the community that he loves, to a local doctor who started her business from a passion to help those who suffer from dizziness. But let’s not stop there. As you flip through these pages you will find so many local businesses who love to serve our community, and I encourage you to show them your love and support as well. So while we teeter between the chill of January winter and the excitement of the upcoming spring, we hope you’ll be inspired to take a moment to love those around you. Today, Tim’s Home Improvement is a solid business built and going strong right here in Papillion. However, to get to this pinnacle of success, Tim and his wife, Chris, had to first draw up a blueprint that would include guidance from the hand of God. Tim, a farm boy from Illinois, said when he first met that spirited Thunderette from Bellevue West High School, four-plus decades ago, he knew she was the one. Chris felt the same way and shortly after they were married. Their life together has taken them to several states around the country. At each stop, Tim and Chris continued to heed their call in the Christian ministry including serving as houseparents to struggling teen girls. Along the way, Tim’s skills as a carpenter were put to work building a new storage room in the church or perhaps a stage in the youth room. “It’s a calling,” Tim said. “And when you receive the calling you have to rely on God and trust that He will guide you.”

While Tim and Chris said they loved their years of work in ministry, they knew the time was coming to put down roots for their growing family. “It’s time to go home,” Tim announced one day, and soon they were heading back to Nebraska. Before long, Tim’s Home Improvement was established and is going strong today. “We’re honest, we do good work, we enjoy the work, and that’s why we stay busy,” Tim said. “I’m a people person and that has

helped catapult us into the thriving business we have today.” While he also builds basements, kitchens, and decks, Tim said bathrooms have become his specialty. Tim said in the future he sees his business branching out into live edge wood and designing and building specialty cabinets. In the meantime, Tim is enjoying the couple’s success and places his gratitude with God. “It’s all in His hands. Nothing we’ve done is without God’s help.”

A good taco is as unique as its community, reflecting the culture of the people who enjoy it. For The Papillion Taco Guy, this includes smoked meats, a hefty dose of humor, and a location in the heart of downtown Papillion. “It’s a huge blessing to have people who support you, and it really gives you that bit of confidence to keep moving,” said Scott Nedved, owner of The Papillion Taco Guy. The Taco Guy goes back to 2017 when Scott and a business partner purchased a food trailer. After refurbishing it as Braai Time, the pair worked four to five events in 2018 to get their feet wet, reinvesting all their earnings into the business. A break came when a construction job site requested the food truck five days a week. “It was always a dream to have my own business,” Scott said. This opportunity began on January 2, 2020. “Things went really well for about 75 days, and then the world shut down.” Due to the pandemic policies of the time, people could not congregate. The two returned to other employment to provide for their families. Wanting to keep the dream, they purchased a cart. The pair decided to use their most popular item: the taco. Then, a simple name. Chuckling, Scott said, “We’ll just call ourselves The Taco Guy—because that’s what they’re going to call us anyway.” The Taco Guy first parked on the corner of First and Washington streets and posted on Facebook in October 2020, bringing his sense of humor with him. “Every time I write a new sign, I’ll post it on there, doing what my wife calls ‘trying to be funny.’”

But it took off, he said while crediting Facebook Groups such as Let’s Talk Papillion and Let’s Really Talk Papillion. “After a year, no one knew about our food truck— everyone wanted the Taco Guy,” said Scott. The Taco Guy grew into a trailer, eventually leading to a cart inside Werner Park. The growth didn’t stop as the Taco Guy moved into its current location at 110 N. Washington Street, opening in August 2023. His friends, family, neighbors, and fellow members of Papillion’s Lifegate Church campus helped renovate the bay, and such support has also helped the business stay out of debt. “This is unheard of in the restaurant market,” he said. “All in all, we were able to get in here debt-free. We started the year debt-free, and we’re ending it debt-free.” In return for the support, Scott hopes to be a unique staple of the city, which people know they can only find in Papillion. “We smoke meat, but we’re not barbecue. We make tacos, but we’re not an authentic taco place. We have hot sauce with a South African pepper, but we’re not an African grill,” Scott said jokingly. “We just want to be that place that is special to the area.” For new customers, Scott recommends trying the smoked brisket tacos, though there is a try-one-ofeach meat option, “like a flight of tacos!” People can check out The Papillion Taco Guy on Facebook and Instagram for cart and event locations, specials, and more. Scott said he hopes to connect with more people. “We had cheerleaders all along the way. They kind of feel like they’re a part of us growing—and they absolutely are.”

The Dizzy Doctor DISCOVER HOW PAIGE DAY’S PASSION HELPS PATIENTS RECLAIM THEIR LIVES

Doctor Paige Day 1. HOW DID YOU BECOME 'THE DIZZY DOCTOR'? I was always fascinated by the vestibular system in PT school. When I started working, I took on every patient with dizziness I could. I craved more and dove right into extensive continuing education to learn more about this specialty and the various diagnoses involved. Following the birth of my first child, I left my full-time PT position and switched to an as-needed basis covering shifts at multiple clinics. Because I wouldn’t see people with dizziness on a regular basis anymore, I created an Instagram account called The Dizzy Doctor (@thedizzydr) as a creative and educational outlet for myself. Several months later, I was contacted by someone who was interested in therapy with me and I wanted to help. I did not have a location at the time, but knowing how beneficial physical therapy would be for him I offered to see him in his home—a mobile clinic. 2. WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU WOULD LIKE PEOPLE TO KNOW ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS? I take a whole-body approach to treating dizziness. The care provided at my office is unique in both the amount of time I get to spend with my patients and the treatments I utilize. I provide an honest assessment and only schedule someone if they are appropriate for my services. The outcomes have truly been amazing.

3. WHAT TYPES OF SYMPTOMS DO YOU TREAT? The list is extensive, but in short, dizziness is an umbrella term to describe many sensations such as; room spinning dizziness, internal sense of spinning, feeling disconnected from your body, feeling like your eyes can’t keep up with your head, brain fog, fatigue, anxiety with dizziness, feeling like you have sealegs, motion sickness, and others. 4. HOW DOES ONE EXPERIENCING DIZZINESS KNOW IF YOU CAN HELP? If they experience any of the symptoms mentioned above, they are a good candidate to come in for an examination. People often experience dizziness that they are not aware of or don’t recognize as such. It doesn’t hurt to come in and get tested! 5. CAN YOU TREAT ALL DIZZINESS? I can treat a lot of dizziness but not all. Some dizziness can be from medications, malformations of the inner ear structure, or greater issues with the brain. When I evaluate patients, I screen for these potential causes and then work towards determining if their symptoms are from their vestibular system. I continue to build a referral network of trusted providers as vestibular care requires a good team! 6. CAN YOU GIVE AN EXAMPLE OF SOMEONE YOU HAVE HELPED? This is my favorite question and one that almost brings me to tears. The impact this business has had on others is why I do what I do. I worked with a 39-year-old female struggling with what she thought was chronic sinus infections in addition to post-concussion syndrome. She started working with me and within a couple of visits had drastically decreased the severity of her symptoms, eliminated daily brain fog, and has been able to resume a normal workout routine. These improvements have made a huge difference in her life.

Sometimes, it takes a community to create an opportunity, push through loss, and create history, which is seen in the life of Papillion’s own, Gina Mancuso-Prososki, Papillion-La Vista High School graduate and now franchise player for the Omaha Supernovas of the newly formed Pro Volleyball Federation [PVF]. “I am very proud of being a Monarch,” said Gina. During her time on the court there, the high school took back-to-back state championships in 2008 and 2009, and she earned the Gatorade National Player of the Year. “My four years at Papillion were a huge blessing and monumental for me. They were the stepping stones for my career.” Now, Gina is playing for the PVF, the country’s first professional volleyball league. As one of seven teams in the inaugural season, Gina and the Supernovas served as the home team for the PVF’s first

game on January 24. Gina believes this historic match, which takes place after the writing of this article, was placed in Omaha as a thank you to the long-time Nebraska fan. “They know how much volleyball is loved around here,” Gina said. “Nebraska fans are deserving of this, if I may say.” Gina credits Papillion, and the many fans who began following her when she wore the maroon and gold, as a crucial milestone in her career. “I have been completely overwhelmed by the people who have followed me throughout my teenage years,” she said. “It’s an honor to play in front of family and friends who have supported me throughout my career.” From Papillion and throughout the state from her time playing for the Nebraska Cornhuskers, these fans have been a tremendous support. “For example, I hate losing; it bothers me to my core,” she said. However, she pointed to the recent support for the current Cornhuskers. Hundreds of fans gathered and waited at the airport to cheer on and welcome the team back after losing in the championship match. “That’s what I grew up with. So, even if I hate losing, the loss is more bearable because of them.” Perhaps unique for the new PVF, Gina plays for and lives in her hometown. “As of a month ago, I was the only player in the PVF playing in their hometown. To be able to say that is not only extremely cool, but it is such a blessing. I feel so overjoyed!” This ability to work, play, and live in her hometown is life-changing, she explains, as before the formation of the PVF, it would be impossible for any Americans to play professional volleyball in their home country. “It’s really life-changing, and I want people to understand that because when you’re not in it, you don’t really know,” she said. “After graduating, you had two choices: call it quits and let all those years go to waste, or you continue to play volleyball—but you have to pack two 50-lb bags and say goodbye to everyone you know for nine months, typically.” While playing professional volleyball overseas, Gina has played in Puerto Rico three times, Germany twice, Poland twice, Indonesia and Azerbaijan. While experiences differed from country to country, there were many tricky, if not uncomfortable, experiences—from language

barriers, which side of the road people drive on, the prevalence of stick-shift vehicles, and even restroom practices. “It’s a lot of things that I don’t think people realize,” she said. “Now you have a third option: stay here and play on your home soil.” She repeats that it is a blessing to wake up in her own bed, live under the same roof as her husband, Masen, for the entirety of the year, and play with her dog, Ronnie, each day. This is life-changing for her and her fellow teammates, but also for many young girls who grow up in communities like Papillion with dreams of playing professional volleyball someday. “It’s a life-changing opportunity for me personally and so many. I am incredibly blessed to be who I am and doing what I’m doing.” “I can’t really say it’s a dream come true, because when I was in college, this wasn’t even a blip on the radar,” she said. “It’s hard to say that when you didn’t know it was even a possibility. Reservations For Two Dreamy destinations for couples looking to get away.

Finding a life partner just might be easier than finding someone you can travel with. Pace, patience and priorities all matter when organizing itineraries, straddling time zones and navigating new places. Do you like languid mornings with room service, wide sandy beaches and white-glove service? Or, do you prefer watching the sunrise in hiking boots, launching into eye-opening excursions and digging to find that hidden gem of a restaurant that serves local food to locals? When the stars align, both partners have an affinity for generally the same kind of vacation, or are willing to compromise. Enjoying travel with your mate is the icing on the (wedding) cake. Traveling can be as stressful as it is sublime. Exhausting as it is inspiring. Traveling as a couple requires additional planning and communication with a healthy dose of patience.
