LIFESTYLE LETTER
Happy New Year!
January 2026 PUBLISHER
Jimmy Darden | jimmy.darden@citylifestyle.com 405.541.5650
Dear OKC Community, The dawn of a new year—especially one focused on Health & Wellness—is a dual-edged sword. It’s a time filled with the genuine excitement of renewal, a chance to set fresh goals and dream about the year ahead. Yet, for many of us, January quickly brings the weight of expectation: the pressure of grand resolutions, rigid diets, and the race toward an often-unattainable perfection. This issue was crafted with the goal of offering something different: inspiration for long-term, sustainable improvements in physical, emotional, and mental health. Like many of you, I look for a theme to anchor my intentions. When 2025 started, I was personally struggling and sought a single word to keep me grounded. The word that came to me was Today. I visualize the 'x' before it as a symbol for the unchangeable past, and the 'x' after as a reminder that tomorrow is not guaranteed. xTodayx became my personal compass—a focus on the only time we truly have to work with. I encourage you to seek out just the right word or phrase to help focus your intentions for 2026. (I'm praying for mine now!) Our greatest takeaway this year should be this: Life isn’t about perfection; it’s about consistency. Whether you’re working on your business, health, or relationships, the difference-maker is not what you do occasionally, but what you commit to most of the time. You wouldn't eat a rich dessert every night, but savoring one now and then is a treat. You can't be on vacation every day, but intentionally planning a couple of restorative trips each year is a realistic goal. This year, let's focus on those small, consistent actions that build a more balanced and fulfilling life. Inside this issue, you’ll find actionable advice on joining a fitness class, carving out essential moments for rest, and mastering the "most of the time" choices that truly shape our well-being. Here’s to a healthy, happy, and consistent new year—we are rooting for your sustainable success!

When most people think about tooth loss, they imagine the inconvenience of chewing or the embarrassment of a visible gap. What often gets overlooked is how missing teeth can quietly change the way your entire face looks. Without the right support, your cheeks may start to look sunken, your lips can lose their shape, and your jawline may appear less defined. That’s why dental implants are such a transformative option. They don’t just restore function by replacing missing teeth—they also help preserve your facial structure so you look like yourself for years to come. At Implant & Prosthodontic Associates, we provide advanced dental implants in Oklahoma City to help patients enjoy the confidence of a smile that feels natural and supports long-term beauty.
5 WAYS DENTAL IMPLANTS HELP PRESERVE FACIAL STRUCTURE
When you think about dental implants, you might picture them simply filling the space left by a missing tooth. In reality, they do so much more. Implants protect your oral health while also helping your face maintain its natural balance and youthful appearance. Here are five key ways they make a lasting difference.
1. Prevents Jawbone Loss: Implants stimulate bone like natural roots. Your jawbone needs stimulation from chewing to stay strong and healthy. When teeth are missing, the bone in that area no longer gets the signals it needs and starts to deteriorate. This loss of bone volume can age your face and weaken your smile’s foundation. Tooth implants act just like natural tooth roots, sending signals to the jawbone every time you bite or chew. This stimulation helps keep the bone intact, protecting your facial shape and preventing the hollowed look that can occur over time. 2. Maintains Facial Structure: Avoid sagging or sunken cheeks. When teeth are lost and bone volume decreases, the shape of your face changes. The cheeks can sag, the lower face may look collapsed, and fine lines can appear more pronounced. These changes often happen gradually, so patients may not notice until the difference is significant. By supporting the jaw and replacing the missing teeth, dental implants maintain your overall facial structure. Instead of settling for an older or more tired appearance, you can keep the natural contours of your face intact. CONTINUED >

3. Supports Lips and Cheeks: Keep features looking full and natural. Your teeth do more than chew—they provide structural support for your lips and cheeks. Without them, these features may lose their fullness, leading to a sunken or thin look around the mouth. Tooth implants restore that essential support. The crowns attached to implants not only fill gaps in your smile but also help keep lips and cheeks in their natural positions. The result is a balanced, youthful look that complements the rest of your features. 4. Prevents Shifting Teeth: Prevent gaps or changes to your bite and smile. When even one tooth is missing, neighboring teeth can start to shift into the open space. Over time, this movement changes your bite and alters the appearance of your smile. Gaps may widen, teeth can tilt, and your bite alignment may suffer. By filling the space immediately, dental implants in Oklahoma City keep other teeth in their correct positions. This not only prevents functional issues like jaw pain but also maintains the symmetry and beauty of your smile. Protecting alignment is one of the most underrated benefits of dental implants, but it makes a noticeable difference in both health and appearance. 5. Natural-Looking Results: Customized crowns blend in with surrounding teeth. Even the healthiest smile needs to look good to feel complete. That’s where modern implant crowns shine. Each one

is carefully designed to match your surrounding teeth in size, shape, and shade. Unlike older tooth replacement options, which can sometimes look bulky or artificial, implant restorations are virtually indistinguishable from natural teeth. Whether you’re laughing, eating, or posing for a photo, you can feel confident that your smile looks seamless. Your journey to restored function and lasting beauty starts here. Dental implants are more than replacements for missing teeth. They preserve your jaw, maintain your facial structure, and keep your features looking youthful and natural. They also restore the everyday comfort and function that makes eating, speaking, and smiling effortless. At Implant & Prosthodontic Associates, our specialists are trusted leaders in implant dentistry. We work with patients facing complex challenges and with dentists seeking a reliable referral partner. Every patient we see receives the highest level of expertise, and referring dentists can trust that patients will return to their general care once treatment is complete. If you’ve been considering tooth implants or looking into the benefits of dental implants, now is the time to explore your options. Schedule a consultation with our team to see how dental implants can help you regain both function and beauty—and give you the confidence to smile without hesitation.

U N D E R S TA N D I N G T H E “WHY” BEHIND WELLNESS ARTICLE BY ANGELA BROOCKERD PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES AND PROVIDED
The New Frontier of Health AN INTERVIEW WITH DR. KYLE GILLETT
Why do so many people feel exhausted, foggy, or unwell, even when their medical tests insist everything is “fine”? Why are we prescribed quick fixes instead of being given real answers? Across modern medicine, a shift is happening. More patients are demanding real explanations, and more clinicians are rethinking what “healthcare” should actually mean. Leading that shift is Dr. Kyle Gillett, a dual board-certified physician in Family Medicine and Obesity Medicine and an expert in metabolic, hormonal, and preventive health. Through his clinic, research, and The Gillett Health Podcast, he’s become a trusted voice for people seeking science-based, root-cause solutions rather than symptom-based band-aids. “Functional medicine is really ‘root cause medicine,’” Dr. Gillett often says. “It’s about asking why the problem exists and not just quieting the noise.” In this Q&A, Dr. Gillett breaks down the most common questions he hears from patients and offers simple, actionable guidance anyone can begin using today.
1. “WHY DO I FEEL AWFUL EVEN THOUGH MY LABS ARE ‘NORMAL’?”
Dr. Gillett: I like to say, “There is no such thing as ‘we’ve done everything.’” We can always dig deeper. Often, the labs ordered are the wrong type of assay, or important markers like ferritin or SHBG—which binds testosterone and estrogen—are completely missed. Beyond lab work, there are other factors: mitochondrial health, sleep quality, mental health, and even how sensitive your dopamine and serotonin receptors are. “Normal” labs do not always equal normal physiology for you.
22
S ELF CA R E | HEALTH + WE LLN E SS
2. “HOW DO I FIX MY ENERGY, BRAIN FOG, OR SLEEP WITHOUT 20 MEDICATIONS?”
Dr. Gillett: Start with a good, comprehensive lab panel to assess nutrients and hormones. Then build the foundation with sleep. My favorite tool is the 10/3/2/1/0 rule: • 10 hours before bed: No caffeine • 3 hours: Avoid large meals and alcohol • 2 hours: No vigorous exercise • 1 hour: No bright blue or white light • 0: No snoozing and no inconsistent sleep/wake times Aim for 7+ hours of high-quality sleep. When sleep improves, energy almost always follows. CONTINUED >

23
3. “IS MY GUT ACTUALLY CAUSING ALL THESE OTHER PROBLEMS?”
Dr. Gillett: Gut health influences most major health issues, but it’s rarely the only problem. Diet is my second pillar of health for a reason. Exercise, sleep, and stress reduction all improve gut function too. Even simple tools like self-hypnotherapy apps can reduce gut-related symptoms.
4. “WHAT CAN I DO RIGHT NOW, TODAY, TO START FEELING BETTER?”
Dr. Gillett: Focus on the pillars of health: diet, exercise, sleep, stress, sunlight, social connection, and spiritual health. Treat them like habits and find ways to make them enjoyable or easy to start. Supplements and medications are supportive tools, not substitutes. Think of them like turbo chargers: they enhance a system that’s already functioning.
5. “WHAT DOES FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE ACTUALLY DO DIFFERENTLY?”
Dr. Gillett: True functional medicine is root-cause medicine, not cookie-cutter supplement regimens. Imagine an older adult with cognitive symptoms who receives multiple prescriptions from a conventional doctor. A functional approach might uncover something entirely different: B12 deficiency, hearing loss, and vision impairment. Fix those, and cognition often improves dramatically with no medications required.
6. “WHEN SHOULD SOMEONE TEST THEIR HORMONES, AND WHICH TESTS MATTER MOST?”
Dr. Gillett: Most adults should get a baseline hormone panel between ages 18 and 28, or earlier if they have symptoms like poor sleep, unexplained fatigue, or changes in heart rate. A proper panel includes testosterone, estradiol, fasting insulin, CMP, lipids (including Lp(a)), A1C, morning cortisol, IGF-1,

“I believe that true innovation requires a commitment to constructive self-criticism to continuously raise the standard of care.” DHEA-S, vitamin D, and ferritin. These markers catch metabolic and hormonal issues long before symptoms become severe.
7. “WHAT LONG-TERM TESTS ACTUALLY HELP PREVENT DISEASE, NOT JUST DIAGNOSE IT?”
Dr. Gillett: Preventive care is evolving rapidly. For heart health, I recommend Coronary Artery CT Angiography (CCTA) because it detects soft plaque that calcium scores miss. Knowing this data early informs you what is needed to prevent a heart attack. Instead of asking your doctor “Do I need cholesterol medication?” ask “Do I have plaque in my arteries?”. Full-body MRIs can be useful too, but they often find harmless abnormalities, which can lead to unnecessary stress or testing. Always weigh the pros and cons with a clinician who understands your goals.
A FINAL WORD FROM DR. GILLETT
“The goal isn’t to tell people what to do, rather it’s to give them the information they need to decide what’s best for themselves.” By understanding the why behind your symptoms, labs, and lifestyle choices, you become the driver, not the passenger, of your health journey.

Ashley Armstrong and Jordan Terry of Wellness Restored Integrative Medicine opened their doors in September of 2025 and have over 35 years of medical and health experience between them, but they feel as though they are just getting started. Wellness Restored was born as a collaboration between Jordan’s medical expertise and Ashley’s personal training, nutrition, and habit-formation expertise. Their approach is holistic and comprehensive, working together with their patients to treat the whole person from the inside out. Integrative Medicine at Wellness Restored has four facets: Evidence-based- the interplay between conventional medicine, scientific research and alternative therapies for healthy habit change and lasting results. We investigate the root cause alongside the patient’s symptoms and lab work. Holistic- Focused not only on physical symptoms but the overall well-being of the patient: mental, emotional, relational and spiritual. Nutrition plays a large role and we believe food is medicine. Collaborative- we believe in teamwork between you, your practitioner, and nutritionist. We listen to you, consider your preferences, goals, environment, level of support and we create simple, sustainable habits for you to implement long-term. EpigeneticYour genes don’t determine your destiny. They influence but do not determine your health. Environment, habits and mindset play a large role in your overall wellness. Let’s Meet Jordan Terry, APRN-CNP, nurse practitioner and mother of two. She shares, “My path into functional medicine began long before I officially made the transition. In NP school, I realized how much of our training centered around diagnosing a condition and matching it to the right prescription. While conventional medicine is beneficial and medications absolutely have their place, I found myself wanting more. I wanted to understand why people were getting sick, what was happening beneath the surface, and how we could slow, improve, or even prevent some of the chronic issue people were living with every day. Around this same time, my dad wasn’t feeling well, and I wanted to help him in a deeper, more comprehensive way. I took my first functional medicine course hoping to understand the body as a connected, dynamic system so I could support him and others like him. Not long after, he was diagnosed with cancer. Walking through his diagnosis, his treatments, and ultimately losing him was one of the most difficult and defining experiences of my life. His cancer didn’t make me believe that lifestyle causes or prevents everything- far from it. Cancer is incredibly complex, and many factors are outside our control. But that season opened my eyes to how much patients need compassion, time, context, and support. It showed me how important it is to care for the parts of health we can influence: our food, our stress, our environment, our habits, our emotional well-being. And it strengthened my desire to practice medicine in a way that sees the whole person, not just their symptoms. “My journey both personally and professionally has shown me that healing is not one-size-fits-all. It’s individualized. And it’s the reason I’m so passionate about the integrative, functional approach I practice today.” Let’s meet Ashley Armstrong, MSEd, CPT, N1-NC, nutritionist and personal trainer. A mother of two teens and after two decades in the field, Ashley shares, “I have worked with hundreds of clients, many of whom struggle to find consistency in their healthy habits and lifestyle. Most unhealthy people have an ‘all or nothing’ mentality. Perfect choices aren’t sustainable and regular “worst” choices will snowball into massive health complications. Small, daily, tedious, unsexy healthy choices compounded over time will produce momentum and massive lasting results. I am an expert at habit formation, mindset shifting and creating consistency in a healthy relationship to food and exercise. Personally, I had much success getting my clients to feel confident, strong and fit in the gym setting but body transformation would not come unless they shifted their nutrition. Sleep, stress and water intake are also major factors in physical performance, weight loss and recovery. Once I turned 40 years old, the things that used to work for me to maintain my weight and fitness didn’t work anymore. I had to shift some things, and learn my body all over again. I love helping women through peri-menopause and menopause to find their optimal health as they age gracefully.” What would a typical appointment at Wellness Restored look like?

You will book with us online. We will contact you to set up an appointment in office and send you a patient intake form. We office out of Restore Behavioral Health Center, in the West building. We prefer to study any lab work you’ve had done ahead of time. You’ll wait less than a minute in our beautiful waiting room and we’ll offer you herbal tea in our cozy office. We will ask a lot of questions, listen to your concerns, consult your medication, supplements, environment, lifestyle and lab work to create a full picture of your health. Then we will collaborate to find a root cause of what’s making you feel less than optimal. At the heart of what we do is empowerment. We want patients to know they have a voice, a choice, and a real ability to participate in their own healing. Our hope is to help people cut through the overwhelming noise of the wellness world, social media and create realistic, approachable, personalized plans that truly serve them. Healing is not one-size-fits-all. It’s individualized. And it’s the reason we’re so passionate about the integrative, functional approach we practice today.
