A Different Take on Valentine’s Day

Well, the holidays are now well in the rearview window and spring hovers tantalizingly in the near future. Meanwhile, it's February in Oklahoma, which typically means bone-chilling cold weather, still-short days, gray skies and little color to brighten the day. As a child, I looked forward to the coming of Valentine's Day (more so than Groundhog Day but less so than Halloween and Christmas! LOL), though the observance consisted of little more than a simple Valentine card exchange in school and a box or two of conversation hearts. Like many others—unmarried and divorced couples and single/unattached individuals included—the holiday came and went for many years for me with little to no interest. But what if, as Peter Levinson notes in his column on page 24, we used Valentine's Day to commemorate not only romantic involvement, but also friendship? As the years pass, I've come to increasingly understand the importance of friendship, and especially of those friendships that involve real-time, in-person meet-ups as opposed to just sharing posts via social media. Studies show that we, as social beings, require actual, physical facetime. We need those hugs and support and laughter; we need that shared space, that connection. Our brain health may require it. Studies show that people who feel isolated (whether it's from physical causes like hearing loss, mobility issues or physical distance from others) are more likely to succumb to Alzheimer's disease than those who get out and socialize often. So this year, I'm considering observing Valentine's Day as my personal "friendship day." (Yes, I know there is a holiday for that, but it seems even more commercial to me than the one we observe annually on Feb. 14.) That's my focus for the "Love Local" theme for this issue of OKC City Lifestyle. I also encourage our readers to "love local" by shopping locally and frequenting local points of interest, such as parks and museums. I also encourage you to read inside about some of the people and places that make "local love" easy to do! Your "homework": search online for quotes on friendship. You'll find some that make you smile or laugh, while others just hit home. My fav? There are currently more than 6,200 children in foster care across Oklahoma, and one nonprofit organization is working diligently to reduce that number and help as many children as possible. The 111Project, established in 2011, is built upon the values of community, caring and connection. The organization strives to help Oklahoma children in the foster care system by connecting them to potential foster families and providing avenues of support. The 111Project seeks to mobilize local churches to help end the child welfare crisis in the state of Oklahoma. For every one church mobilized, 111Project hopes to recruit and support one foster family from that church and serve one child welfare family through the organization’s care-sharing platform, CarePortal. This “1 Church, 1 Family for 1 Purpose” mission strives to garner more support and lessen the number of children and families in crisis across the state. “It’s not the work that 111Project does, but the work that the churches and communities do that is important,” says the 111Project’s Chelsea Weeks. “The 111Project is here to bring awareness and engagement opportunities, but then ultimately pass ownership to our local communities to solve their crisis. We aim to support these communities of care throughout the state in their missions to serve children and families.” By recruiting and advocating for foster families, the 111Project is helping to ensure that there are enough safe and loving families to receive children in their greatest time of need, keep children local to their communities, schools, and families while also keeping as many siblings together as possible. “We support the biological, kinship families and case workers involved,” Chelsea explains. “This might include

stabilizing a family to keep children out of foster care, removing obstacles that allow for children to return home quicker, stabilizing a foster placement, or helping a child or youth when they have a transition plan into an adoptive family or into adulthood. Ultimately, the goal is building a stronger community of care around each family.” This year, the 111Project will serve over 8,000 Oklahoma children across 54 counties, and the network of involved churches, agencies and counties grows each year. Since the inception of the organization's CarePortal in 2015, the number of children in foster care has been reduced by almost half. In the future, the 111Project hopes to expand into all 77 counties across the state and work with business and foundation partners to serve under-resourced communities. Bringing in the support of community organizations allows the 111Project to further expand its outreach. Recently, the 111Project teamed up with The S.O.U.L. Mission, the University of Oklahoma football team’s development program, to build over 250 bunk beds for kids who have been placed with foster families. Partnerships such as these help improve the lives of many Oklahoma families, including those in the child welfare system. “We believe in the near future, 111Project will have mobilized enough churches to activate all 77 counties on CarePortal and can build enough capacity to see that every family that needs help in the child welfare system can get it in Oklahoma,” she adds. “We hope to see a child welfare system with more than enough families and more than enough support.” For more information about the 111Project, visit 111project. org. This Valentine’s Day Show Your Significant Other How Much You Value Your Friendship ARTICLE BY PETER LEVINSON

Oh, Valentine’s Day, why do you add stress to my life? Every year, Valentine’s Day rolls around with its holiday merchandise filling the front shelves of every store. Facebook and Instagram posts add salt to the wounds of those who receive nothing and create comparisons to others. My wife would most likely say I’m not very romantic. I could attempt to defend myself with a myriad of excuses, but I’ve never won her over by defending myself from how she feels. Instead, I find it much more productive to attempt to understand how she feels and where she’s coming from. One of the decisions I am thankful for, from a previous Valentine’s Day many years ago, is to show our love for each other every day of the year, not just on one specific day. That does not mean I do nothing for Valentine’s Day or that this commitment somehow lets me off the hook while the rest of the world celebrates. Rather, I strive to do a little bit extra. For example, my wife loves music. She often expresses herself, her feelings and thoughts through music lyrics. Even though mix tapes have become obsolete with the fall of cassette and CD players, creating music playlists is still something I do. I’m not much of a lyrics person myself; I am more visual. I don’t hear the lyrics as much as I think of the images the music conjures in my mind. However, for the past few years, I’ve spent time listening to music with the intent of finding songs with lyrics that express certain feelings or represent events in our lives.

So, how about you? What emotions or commitments does Valentine’s Day evoke for you? Is it a day of little significance or a day of great importance? If you delve into the origins of the day, you will find multiple myths and stories, some directly related to love, like the priest persecuted by Rome for marrying couples. My favorite tells of a priest imprisoned by the Roman government. While imprisoned, he was tasked with teaching the daughter of a Roman official. There was no romantic interest between the two, as the age difference was vast. What they had was a deep friendship. When not teaching, they would exchange letters about many things, until the day he was executed. I love this story because it shifts Valentine’s Day from a day solely centered on romantic love to friendship. Too often in relationships, friendship is lost, though initially, it was the catalyst that led to wanting more with the person you are with. My wife and I focus a lot on our “friendship” with each other. Roles such as romance, husband, wife, partner or business partner also play into our relationship, but ensuring that we remain friends is extremely important to us. My challenge to you this Valentine’s Day is to show your significant other how much you value your friendship. Make your friendship the theme of your romance. It may be the most needed thing in your current relationship—more so than a teddy bear or a heart-shaped box of chocolates. As always, I would love to hear your thoughts.
