My vision is to be able to bring out the beauty of all that surrounds us from the big to the small. I believe it is all valuable and serves a purpose. I am an avid nature lover as I feel we can recalibrate our souls away from the stressors of life away in the woods. I travel across our beautiful state to try and capture all the beauty it provides. The images I capture can only be deciphered by the viewer and that is what I love about what I am able to do. I can be contacted through email, phone, or Facebook messenger about any prints you need or anything you would want me to capture specially for you! I will travel as well.

What Can Bank Statements Show in a Divorce? In a divorce, there is a lot of information and evidence that a court may look at in terms of helping to ensure a just result. One piece of evidence that can become important is bank statements. In some circumstances, the courts may order the parties to exchange bank statements voluntarily. In some cases, the parties may agree to exchange bank statements by consent. And in other cases, the parties may issue requests for production upon each other to produce bank statements. In some cases, the parties in a divorce may have jointly titled all of their bank statements. In other cases, the parties may have had separate bank accounts during the marriage. This can lead to different levels of concern in some cases — and different lev-

els of need to exchange this information. What can bank statements show? And why can they be important in a divorce? These are questions many would ask. As it relates to spousal maintenance and child support, bank statements can show deposits into an account. In cases where the income of the parties is a disputed issue, this can be even more relevant. This can be particularly true where there is commission-based income, tips, rental income, or income from secondary employment. Bank statements can also show spending habits. These spending habits can be important as it relates to determining the expenses of parties in a divorce. These expenses can be important as it relates to spousal maintenance. It can also be important as it relates to child support when the expenses relate to the chil-

dren.

In some cases, the parties might need to show fairly recent bank statements. In some cases, it might be useful to go some period of time backward in terms of looking at bank statements. Different facts can lead to different needs in divorce cases. The Toughest Row VETERANS TAKE DARING ROW ACROSS ATLANTIC

ARTICLE BY JERRI CULPEPPER PHOTOGRAPHY BY PROVIDED

(Editor’s Note: A similar version of this article was originally published by the University of Oklahoma.) A University of Oklahoma alumnus/U.S. Marine Corps veteran teamed up with three other U.S. armed forces veterans on a daring rowing challenge across the Atlantic Ocean in December to raise funds for organizations in their home state of Florida targeting veterans struggling with mental health issues. Paul Lore, who earned his master’s degree in public administration in 2011 from OU, is sharing their story in hopes that news of their involvement in the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge— billed as the “World’s Toughest Row”—will inspire members of the OU family—and the public at-large, especially those currently serving or having served in the armed forces—to follow suit by creating their own campaign or aiding an established fundraiser such as this one. During the race, Lore and his team rowed more than 1.5 million oar strokes. They rowed for two hours, and slept for two hours, constantly, 24 hours a day, in waves measuring up to 20 feet high. Rowers generally burn over 5,000 calories a day, and on average lose over 26 lbs. during the crossing. CONTINUED >

The team will continue to push with their fundraising through 2022 by working to fund four more dogs for K9’s for Warriors and four additional scholarships for Cross The Line Foundation, as well as the broader mission of raising awareness of PTSD and other issues plaguing our nation’s warriors.

THE TEAM AND THEIR MISSION The other members of Paul’s ocean row team were Billy Cimino, Cameron Hansen and A.M. “Hupp” Huppmann, veterans of the U.S. Army, Air Force and Navy, respectively. Of course, not unlike with any military foray, the FOAR FROM HOME team also included an “army” of supporters that included their spouses and a land support team working in areas ranging from boat shipping and equipment logistics to row coaching and media consulting. Even before the race, the FFH team had exceeded its initial $500,000 goal to benefit their partner organizations—K9’s For Warriors and Cross The Line Foundation. The team coined the phrase “It Takes an Island to Cross an Ocean” early on in their campaign, and their fundraising successes have proven this to be true. The team will continue to push with their fundraising through 2022 by working to fund four more dogs for K9’s for Warriors and four additional scholarships for Cross The Line Foundation, as well as

the broader mission of raising awareness of PTSD and other issues plaguing our nation’s warriors.

THE TALISKER WHISKY ATLANTIC CHALLENGE Organizer: Atlantic Campaigns SL, a Spanish company in San Sebastian de La Gomera, which has organized the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge since 2012 and overseen seven ocean rows and seven Guinness World Records. Over $7 million has been raised for charities worldwide over the past four races. The Challenge: FOAR FROM HOME and the other rowing teams rowed more than 3,000 miles west to Nelson’s Dockyard English Harbor, Antigua—one of the two major islands that comprise the Caribbean nation of Antigua and Barbuda. The rowers battle with sleep deprivation, salt sores and other physical extremes while they work together to ensure they reach their destination safely.

A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE DOESN’T HAVE TO BE BORING WITH THESE FUN OPTIONS

from bellydancing to boxing January is typically a time when everyone starts thinking about healthy habits, slimming down in the new year or doing something good for their health. However, the typical gym experience can be off-putting to many. A new study finds half of Americans find no joy in physical exercise. The poll of 2,000 people found 50 percent don’t work out as much as they’d like because they just don’t enjoy it. In fact, they hate it so much that 25 percent would be willing to text their ex and even cancel Netflix for a year to get out of working out for the rest of their lives. If you are one of those people, no worries! Turns out exercise can be fun if you are moving in a way you enjoy. Here are some alternative workout and health classes and habits that can make burning calories so much fun!

ARTICLE BY HEIDE BRANDES PHOTOGRAPHY BY PROVIDED

Tired of boring exercise? Try bellydancing.

bellydancing 1. SHIMMY YOURSELF HEALTHY Bellydancing isn’t just a fun way to move, it’s proven to have major physical and mental health benefits too! According to WorldBellydance.com, this form of dance helps relieve joint pain, helps increase bone density, helps in weight loss, reduces stress levels and improves self-confidence. The Aalim Dance Academy in Oklahoma City at aalimokc.com is Oklahoma’s non-profit dance studio whose mission is to “To promote positive awareness in celebration of movement and music through the dances of North Africa, Southwest Asia, Turkey and Greece, and to empower individuals by providing an authentic and inclusive learning environment.” “Bellydance is low impact and perfect for all ages and body types. Bellydancing is so fun that it doesn’t even

16

H EA LT H Y LIF E ST Y LE | FI TNE S S

feel like exercise,” said Aalim Board President Ayperi Al Jawahir.“Our Intro to Bellydance classes are perfect for folks who don’t have any dance experience because we start from the very basic movements. It’s a great way to meet new people and learn about the different cultures that bellydance comes from.” The studio offers in-person and online classes weekly that range from Introduction to Bellydance to Advanced classes. Students learn the basic movements and history of the cultural dance through fun classes that are meant for ALL bodies. In addition, many students find a community and deep friendships in the world of bellydance. For more information or to enroll in classes, visit aalimokc.com.

boxing 2. HITTING YOUR HEALTH - LITERALLY

Boxing gyms offer stellar cardio workouts and stress relief.

Boxing has the added benefit of improving eye-hand coordination, especially if you’re sparring on a bag, hitting padded targets, or just “shadow” boxing.

If you’re looking to knock out some stress while getting a great workout, Boxing may be the perfect choice. Oklahoma City has a slew of boxing clubs that offer classes and boot camps for kids, adults and beginners. Some boxing clubs like Victory Boxing Club at victoryboxingclub.com even have children’s classes that are designed to help children build their self-confidence while learning important self-defense skills. Boxing is a great workout for a number of reasons. According to Harvard Health, “Fitness boxing is also a great aerobic exercise. Aerobic exercise gets your heart pumping and helps lower the risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, and diabetes.” Boxing also has the added benefit of improving eye-hand coordination, especially if you’re sparring on a bag, hitting padded targets, or just “shadow” boxing. Some local boxing clubs include Title Boxing Club in Edmond (titleboxingclub.com), Western Avenue Boxing Gym (westernavenueboxinggym.com), and kickboxing classes at the Oklahoma City Area YMCA (ymcaokc.com). hiking Joining a hiking club is a great way to exercise while making friends.

3. HIKE YOUR WAY TO HEALTH Hiking in the outdoors benefits the heart, mind and body in so many ways. Some of the health benefits of hiking include lowering your risk of heart disease, improving blood pressure, building strength in your glutes and legs and improving mental health. The great outdoors reduces stress, calms anxiety, and can lead to a lower risk of depression, according to researchers at Stanford University. Oklahoma has several hiking clubs that you can join for a bit of socialization as well. One hiking club, GRIT Hikers, is led by Lori Ford, but Oklahoma City has tons of hiking clubs to join. “On a typical 4-5 mile trip, we go hiking, bouldering, off-trail exploring and even light climbing up to 2,200’ high mountains,” said Lori. “The natural movements give a more rewarding form of cross-training than one achieves with typical gym equipment. After one woman tackles a particularly difficult bouldering maneuver, she turns back to coach the woman behind her through the problem. Those team-building lessons and camaraderie level up our individual confidence levels.”

Trampoline parks burn a ton of calories while having fun.

trampoline 4. TRAMPOLINES AREN’T JUST FOR KIDS Oklahoma City and Edmond have numerous trampoline parks, which offer up fun physical activities for every age. The trampoline parks allow you to jump, bounce and do tricks, but in addition to all the fun, jumping on trampolines is also great exercise. Burn up to 1,000 calories an hour jumping on trampolines, but also improve your balance and coordination. Many trampoline parks, like Elevation Trampoline Park in Edmond, have group fitness classes.

yoga 5. STRETCH AND RELEASE Taking yoga classes at a studio is a great way to supplement your strength and cardio training at the gym by improving mobility, flexibility and whole body strength. “I teach a specialty class at Dragon Yoga (OKC’s first Pay What You Can studio) every Tuesday called Myofascial Release. Myo-fascia is the connective tissue that surrounds and encompasses your muscles, joints, and body systems. When myo-fascia is constricted, so

do movement and system processes,” said Kat Dinh, yoga teacher and ayurveda wellness coach and owner of Seeking Soma Yoga & Ayurveda “In my class, we use foam rollers, tennis balls and other props to focus on hydrating and relieving constricted myo-fascia. It feels like a great deep tissue massage you give to yourself. For more information, email kat@seekingsoma.org.

During my weight lifting and cardio sessions throughout the week, I know I should stretch and do yoga, but I made the excuse that I don’t have time to add 15-30 minutes for stretching on a mat. Stretch U has become my lifeline out of this particular rock and a hard place. Stretch U provides one-on-one, full-body stretches in increments of 20, 40, or 60-minute sessions. According to Kylie A., Business Development Manager for Stretch U, ”The ideal client is anyone who is looking to improve the way they feel and move. Our clients range from youth athletes to senior citizens with the most common demographic being office workers in their 40’s-50’s with lower back pain from sitting for long hours.” Two main techniques used during the sessions: The Carey Stretch and Lock & Stretch. Physical Therapist John Carey, founder and owner ,created the Carey Stretch, a systematic one-on-one stretching

technique. According to the website (StretchU.com): “The Carey Stretch includes: PNF stretching (proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation), a contract and relax technique for the lower extremities, passive stretching for the upper extremities, and neural flossing, a specialized way of easing neural tension in different parts of the body.” The second technique is Lock & Stretch, focusing on releasing tension and increasing circulation through the body by locking down your fascia while stretching different muscles. I do not fully understand some of the science mentioned above. I know the benefits I have received by making a minimum of a 40-minute session a weekly routine. I leave each session feeling relaxed, limber, and energized. The technicians at Stretch U are some of the best people I have met and are incredibly passionate about what they do. Stretch U has four locations in the Oklahoma City Metro, in Nichols Hills, Edmond, Yukon, and Norman. Booking sessions are easy and user-friendly when using their app. JANUARY 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYLE . C O M / O KC

Exhibit C Gallery, located in Oklahoma City’s Bricktown district on Sheridan, is a premier First American art gallery and retail store owned and operated by the Chickasaw Nation. At approximately 3,000 square feet, Exhibit C opened in July 2014 with a mission to feature works of art from Chickasaw and southeastern artists, as well as artists from across Indian Country whose work represents their communities, cultures and identities. The gallery currently showcases pieces from approximately 55 First American artists in addition to featured exhibits, which rotate every four months—new exhibits start in March, July and November each year. and creative interpretation by the artists related to traditional and non-traditional First American culture and experiences. Exhibition artists are invited to create works exclusively for each featured exhibit. “Clan Stories,” on display until February 28, 2022, features seven First American artists using various mediums to tell the story of their family clans. Each artist has a written piece accompanying their artwork that provides additional information about First American Clans. March 1, 2022, marks the start of a new exhibit, “As We Gather: Plants and Foods of Our Land,” which will highlight several different artists’ interpretations of plants and foods that are important to them and their individual cultures. The exhibit will feature a variety of mediums, such as basket weaving, painting and printmaking. Each featured exhibit showcases three to twenty artists, each submitting one to four pieces. Each show presents an opportunity for Exhibit C to redesign the gallery to ensure the artwork tells a story for visitors. Exhibit C also offers Pendleton and products from numerous First American companies, including Bedré Fine Chocolate and the Chickasaw Press and one-of-a-kind First American gifts such as hand-made pottery, contemporary paintings, jewelry, hand-woven baskets and more. Exhibit C is open daily from 9 am-6 pm. Check Instagram @exhibitcgallery or Facebook for updates on current and upcoming exhibits, as well as monthly deals.
