TODAY’S WOMEN ARE BUSY. Some are full-time professionals balancing career and family; others are raising children at home, and still others use their time to volunteer and make a difference. With all the pressures and demands placed on women, it can be hard to squeeze in healthy living and exercise. Women need roughly two and a half hours of moderate intensity exercise every week. In addition, women need strengthening exercises at least two days a week to combat weakness, osteoporosis and other health issues. So what does that mean? Think of it this way: Women should do five 30-minute workouts a week, plus some strengthening exercises like yoga and weightlifting. One way to do this is to choose a workout you can do almost anywhere. Exercise that doesn’t require much preparation and results in significant physical gains in a short period of time is best. Think of high-intensity activities like running, body-weight exercises, interval training and yoga. Don’t dismiss the power of exercise DVDs or exercise videos on your streaming devices either. You can stream a workout on your laptop at work or from your TV at home. Just remember that any exercise—no matter how small—is better than nothing.

Plan ahead. Just like every other important task on your to-do list, dedicate time for exercise. Block off time on your calendar for exercise just like you do for a meeting or to have lunch with a friend. Natalie Shirley PRESIDENT AND CEO OF NATIONAL COWBOY AND WESTERN HERITAGE MUSEUM For Natalie Shirley, the key to success is to listen to all sides, make a decision quickly and execute that decision. In fact, she has never been the kind of person to wait around or leave the hard job to someone else. Natalie is the first woman president and CEO for the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum, which was founded in 1955. She oversees more than 125 staff and 200 volunteers in the museum’s efforts to preserve and share the history and cultures of the American West. Prior to her appointment as museum president, Natalie served concurrently as the OSU-OKC president and as the Oklahoma Secretary of Education and Workforce Development. From 2007-2011, Natalie was a member of Gov. Brad Henry’s Cabinet as Oklahoma Secretary of Commerce and Tourism where she also served as the executive director of the Department of Commerce, the state’s leading economic development agency. “I have two personal philosophies. One is that you can’t make a course correction from standing still. You have to start moving,” she says. “The second is that I don’t believe patience is a virtue. I think patience is an excuse. You have to be willing to listen to all advice and then make a decision.” In addition to her new role at the museum, Natalie serves on the United Way board as well as several business boards, including the Greater Oklahoma City Chamber of Commerce, Greater Oklahoma City Chamber Executive Committee, Oklahoma City Convention & Visitors Bureau, State Chamber of Oklahoma and the Oklahoma State Fair board. She also serves on the Jasmine Moran Children’s Museum Board of Trustees.

Jayne Jayroe-Gamble AUTHOR, JOURNALIST AND FORMER MISS AMERICA Jayne Jayroe-Gamble is a third-generation Oklahoman and a former Miss America. For 17 years she enjoyed a career as a broadcast journalist, succeeding as a prime time news anchor in Oklahoma City and Dallas/Fort Worth. She also served as spokesperson for the Oklahoma Health Center and Cabinet Secretary of Tourism for Oklahoma. “I’m passionate about Oklahoma City and Oklahoma. I’ve lived in New York City and in Dallas/Fort Worth,” she says. “I love both of those areas, but there’s no place like Oklahoma, and I believe that Oklahoma City has become one of the most liveable cities in America. The quality of life here is outstanding, and we have a strong spirit of creative energy tethered by common sense that makes us attractive.” Jayne has written articles for national magazines and is the author of several inspirational books, including Devote Forty Days, More Grace than Glamour (with Bob Burke) and Oklahoma III (with David Fitzgerald). Her latest book, Practice: Unleashing the Power of Faith, was released in December 2018. Jayne is the founder and director of a successful luncheon series for Oklahoma women called “Esther Women,” which is in its 15th season. She remains a tireless volunteer, serving her church, community and state in many ways. Currently, she serves on the boards of Oklahoma City University, Salt and Light Leadership Training, MAPS3 Parks Subcommittee, OKC Philharmonic Board, Oklahoma Hall of Fame and Mercy Hospital’s Foundation. “Oklahoma City is an easy community to be a part of. We are a friendly place and not as socially structured as some cities. If you sincerely want to be involved in an aspect of this place, there’s a role you can play,” Jayne says. Recently, she was selected to be in the Oklahoma Women’s Hall of Fame. Jayne has received many local and state awards including the state’s highest honor, induction into the Oklahoma Hall of Fame in 2007.

Martha Burger PRESIDENT & CEO, OKLAHOMA CITY UNIVERSITY Martha Burger is the 18th president of Oklahoma City University. She is a former executive in the energy industry and served as Senior Vice President – Human and Corporate Resources at Chesapeake Energy Corporation. Martha is active in civic and professional organizations as well as statewide initiatives. She has a long history with Oklahoma City University, earning her MBA from OCU in 1992 and joining the Meinders School of Business Oklahoma Commerce and Industry Hall of Honor in 2011. She also received an honorary doctorate of Humane Letters in 2012. Since Martha began working at OCU, much of her community involvement comes as a result of her position. She has re-engaged with the OKC Chamber to ensure that OCU stays informed about activities and workforce initiatives taking place in the business community. “Personally I am involved with organizations that promote animal welfare such as OK Humane, where I serve as board chair, and that work with local communities across the globe to address issues arising from poverty such as World Neighbors,” Martha says. “Margaret Mead said to ‘never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.’ To me, community involvement is essential to keep us moving forward and to keep Oklahoma City on its path of continuous improvement. Also, being engaged in something bigger than me is good for my soul!” Over the course of her 45-year career, Martha has learned much that has contributed to her leadership style today, the most basic being to “show up.” “Just by being present, listening and being willing to work hard, you can inspire others to join you as you work toward a common goal,” she says. “I also encourage everyone to have his or her own personal board of directors. Having a small group of people who you trust to be absolutely honest with you is necessary to help yourself establish reasonable goals and to hold yourself accountable.” CONTINUED >

Dr. Arielle Allen OKLAHOMA CITY GYNECOLOGY & OBSTETRICS Dr. Arielle Allen is a fellowship-trained urogynecologist, board-certified in obstetrics and gynecology, who specializes in female pelvic health. She earned her medical degree from Oklahoma State University and completed her fellowship at the University of Oklahoma. Dr. Allen has dedicated her training to the health and well-being of women. “My passion is womenʼs health. So, my focus has always been how to optimize the access women have to health care and to educate women on their health care needs,” she says. “I am sensitive to the lack of information out there specifically related to the topic of female pelvic health. Thankfully over the past several years, there has been a shift toward providing information on womenʼs breast and cardiac health; these are now mainstream. But, the mainstream information regarding female pelvic floor health is still lacking.” Dr. Allen gives regular educational talks open to the public on the various pelvic floor topics throughout the city and provides lectures for the public at Lakeside Women’s Hospital. “I put together a website, Urogynecology.com, which is a fantastic resource for educating oneself on the female pelvic floor conditions and treatment options. I also have recently brought social media into the mix, with posts meant to reach out to a larger audience, informing them of pelvic floor topics as well with a strong intent to reduce the traditional stigma associated with these topics,” she says. As the first board-certified urogynecologist in fulltime private practice in the state of Oklahoma, Dr. Allen hopes to improve the overall health of women. “By increasing awareness of these issues, we are empowering women to speak with their doctors about these specific issues and inviting them to be more pro-active about their health.”

BETSY HENDERSHOT, FOUNDER OF OKLAHOMA'S DOWNWARD DOG WINES, WANTED TO STAY TRUE TO HER PASSION FOR SUSTAINABILITY, BUT SHE ALSO WANTED A BOX WINE AT A REASONABLE PRICE POINT THAT HAD THE QUALITY SHE EXPECTED. A fan of simple, drinkable wines, Betsy saw a gap in not only affordable box wine that delivered on taste, but also on alternative packaging for box wines. Betsy has worked for six years with her husband's company, Boardwalk Distributing, the largest locally owned statewide liquor distributor. She saw a need. "About two years ago, I got serious about starting my own wine business. The availability of good wines in the box wine industry at a good price point was pretty slim. IT’S A REMARKABLE TIME TO BE A FEMALE LEADER. Nearly half of the workforce in the United States are women, with younger females entering the professional world more educated than men and making more money to men their age than their mothers and grandmothers decades ago. There’s no question, though, we still have miles to go in terms of supporting women with families, offering more flexible and female-respected work cultures and advancing pay scales. As a business leader for more than 18 years, I’m a firm believer in women supporting, not competing, with other women. Because together, we can do more! I’ve been fortunate to work alongside and manage teams of women who are incredibly successful in their careers. So what’s the secret sauce for that success? Here are the leadership tips I’ve learned in my own professional journey.
